Inside This Issue
Senior Center Newsletter September-October 2020 Hello everyone!
The Senior Center has been open at Village Green Center for almost two months and we have had so many heartwarming moments. My favorite so far was watching Clara Mueller ride her motorized ADA scooter (from her home, no less) into the Knitting and Crocheting group on a Wednesday morning to the hearty applause from the rest of the group. Whether you play bridge, canasta, mah jongg or poker, you are missed! We are closely following state and federal guidelines for when table and card games can be held again.
Other "Drop-Ins" have returned to the Senior Center. The Crafty Ladies, Current Events, Knitting and Crocheting, Art Studio and Humanities have returned with preregistration required. Humanities is now a hybrid program with people participating in-person and from home via Zoom. There’s room for more in each group if you’re interested.
I have been receiving a lot of positive feedback from participants saying they enjoy being back and feel comfortable at our new location. Eva Sebestyen joined me in person at Village Green to watch the Leslie Goddard virtual program, Tea for Three. She wanted to see the show but had no computer. It gave me the idea that we could do this for other events too. We created hybrid programs for fall so you can choose either to attend in-person or virtually through Zoom.

Katie Kotloski
Recreation Division Manager
There are a few people to thank for their kind thoughtfulness over the last few months. Gail Hoffman knitted me a beautiful plum-colored phone carrier for Walkie Talkies on Wednesdays and Fridays. At our Senior Advisory meeting Lenore Bernstein brought me delicious homemade brownies and mandel bread besides recording the minutes for the group. Maddie Fern brought a large bag of three-cereal, (that means they're healthy!) homemade cookies to share with coworkers. Hedy Margolin gave me a box of herbal tea after we discovered a mutual love of teas. Liz Reidel shares animal rescue and cultural videos with me, Marv Klein continues to entertain me by phone with jokes and Marcia Walanka shares her excellent sense of humor with emails. Thank you all for being so nice!
I hope you find some enticing programs and activities within this issue that inspire you to connect with us. Feel free to reach out with questions or suggestions by email at lwassinger@nbparks.org or call 847-897-6162. I hope to hear from you.
See you soon!

Meet Kurt Ottinger
Many of you already have met Kurt Ottinger, Technical Director for the Northbrook Park District Theatre. Kurt quickly learned to become the answer man for virtual programming in the Park District. Kurt is the frequent moderator for the Intro to Zoom Workshops and the Senior Center Virtual Update, both of which take place monthly and are free; pre-registration is required to receive the program links. He answers questions and helps troubleshoot issues. He also moderates special events such as the recent Leslie Goddard performance last month and the upcoming Barry Bradford show this month.
Kurt has received glowing reviews from several participants after providing step-by-step guidance in getting them into their virtual program experience. Thank you, Kurt, for providing such great customer service.
Card Playing Remains On Hold
Per the Governor’s Executive Order, in-person card games are unable to be offered at this time. The Northbrook Park District continues to monitor guidelines from the CDC and the State of Illinois and we will resume card game drop-ins and classes once restrictions are lifted.

Connect with Zoom
You may have attended Zoom classes or programs or used Google Hangouts for connecting with family and friends. Most of us have come to realize what a great option virtual communication provides.
If you haven’t participated in a Zoom program and want to try, we want to help! Once you sign up for a virtual program you will be sent an email with meeting instructions and a link. A link is a strange looking line with letters, numbers and punctuation strung together—underlined and in a different color, usually at the bottom of the message. Next you will click on that link, the link opens, and the screen prompt will ask you to join the meeting. You will click on the button and your host will let into the meeting at the appropriate time.
To use the Zoom program, you need to create a Zoom account by going to Zoom.com. Click on "Sign Up, It's Free" to create an account and get started. This is an additional security step required by the Northbrook Park District. If you need help with this step please call 847-897-6162.
If you sign up for a class or a program and have trouble making things work, don’t worry! We have staff here during all Zoom programs to assist you with any problems. Call 847-291-2995 for assistance during programs.
Digital Immigrant vs. Digital Native
• A digital immigrant is a person born or brought up before the widespread use of technology.
• A digital native was born or brought up during the age of digital technology and is therefore familiar with computers at an early age.
If you’re reading this newsletter you are probably a digital immigrant. The above definitions explain why sometimes it seems so difficult to understand how to do certain things on your phone, TV or computer. Being a digital immigrant doesn’t make it impossible for you to participate in the digital world, but it will require determination, an open mind and a willingness to ask questions to become comfortable with technology. That’s why the Senior Center has been offering the Intro to Zoom as well as the Tech Series Workshops—monthly workshops to help you become more comfortable in a digital world.
Monthly Virtual Coffee & Catch-up
