• The Northbrook Park District was awarded a $400,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The funds will be used toward park improvements and renovations at Oaklane Park including a new playground, conversion of two tennis courts to one tennis court and two pickleball courts, looping pathway, new picnic shelter, native plantings, and a butterfly garden.

• Our District saved nearly $700,000 through a ComEd energy efficiency grant program. LED lighting is being installed throughout multiple parks and facilities in our park system. The retrofit to this more energy efficient lighting will save $135,000 annually.

Message from Executive Director Molly Hamer

• Northbrook native and professional hockey player, JT Compher, plays for the Colorado Avalanche and brought the Stanley Cup home to Northbrook. This historic event took place at the Northbrook Sports Center where JT grew up skating and playing hockey. Congratulations to JT for his success. We were honored to celebrate with JT and the Stanley Cup on Friday, July 15.

The events celebrated Northbrook native, former Northbrook Bluehawks player and current Colorado Avalanche team member JT Compher and the Stanley Cup. At a public event at Northbrook Sports Center, Northbrook Park District Commissioner and long-time family friend Jeff Simon, Village of Northbrook President Kathryn Ciesla, and JT Compher addressed the crowd flanked by hockey players from the Northbrook Bluehawks and Glenbrook North High School. The hundreds of people in attendance were then able to parade onto the ice rink to have photos taken with JT and the Stanley Cup.

The Compher family also hosted an event in the clubhouse at Heritage Oaks Golf Club later in the day for family and friends. Other locations on the Stanley Cup tour throughout the community included visiting the fire department, hitting a few baseballs at Village Green Park, and a stop at The Landmark Inn Bar and CompherGrille.chose to give back to the community through the Northbrook Sports Center event, encouraging the crowd to pay it forward by supporting Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook in their belief that “every child should grow up happy, healthy and with hope.”

Lightning Warning Systems

50 Northbrook

Strike Guard monitors cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning. The lightning warning system will activate when there is an immediate lightning threat in the area. When this occurs you must seek shelter immediately. The unit will deactivate when the immediate threat has passed.

Activation (an immediate lightning threat is present) One uninterrupted (15-second) siren will sound and a strobe will flash. Deactivation (the system has determined conditions are safe) Three 5-second blasts will sound and the strobe will go off.

Testing takes place on Tuesdays at 9:30am for the lightning systems. Be sure not to confuse testing with an actual alarm! Testing will not take place if there is threatening weather. nbparks.org/facility-status information. Park District

The Northbrook Park District utilizes a notification program: Rainout Line. Rainout Line is a simple way to find out the status of a field or facility. There are four easy options: • Download the free Rainout Line App • Visit Rainoutline.com and search Northbrook • Click the Status button on nbparks.org • Call 847-281-3370 and follow phone prompts

The Northbrook Park District has two lightning warning systems. One is located at Heritage Oaks Golf Club with ancillary units at West Park and Wood Oaks Green Park. The other unit is located at Techny Prairie Park and Fields with ancillary units at the Chalet in Meadowhill Park and Village Green Park.

3.5 Has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. Starting to exhibit more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.

Adult Tennis Rating System

To determine your appropriate class level, refer to the National Tennis Rating System. If you’re unsure, call the Northbrook Racquet Club at 847-498-2520 for a skills assessment before registering.

1.0 Just starting to play tennis.

2.0 Needs on-court experience. Has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play.

4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident. Rallies may be lost due to impatience.

4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponent's. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.

Help the Park District provide an enjoyable tennis season by following court rules, posted at all facilities. Players must wear shirts on the courts and soft, rubber-soled shoes; black-soled shoes are not allowed. Only authorized tennis instructors are allowed to conduct lessons on Park District courts and the courts should be used only for tennis and pickleball activities. The Park District is not responsible for personal items.

Court Rules

2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.

3.0 Fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up and one-back.

1.5 Has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.

Jr. Icettes must be entering 7th grade and at least FS V. Dancettes must be entering 6th grade and in FS V. ICETTE PREP CLASS This class is designated to expose skaters to specific elements and dance styles required for tryouts. The Northbrook Sports Center Skating School is excited to announce its transition to the Learn to Skate USA class curriculum. The Skating School will continue to add a personal touch to its educational programs and talent development as it has done for more than 50 years.

The mission of Learn to Skate USA is to provide a fun and positive experience that will instill a lifelong love of skating. Fully supported by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speedskating, with support from Special Olympics, the Professional Skaters Association and the U.S. Ice Rink Association, Learn to Skate USA offers every student a heartfelt welcome, lifelong benefits and fond memories.

Figure Skating Lessons Group lessons are a fun, challenging and reasonably priced way to learn and improve skating skills. Children who can stand in skates without support are ready to learn to skate. Students of all ages learn the proper way to skate from professionals in a structured and supervised setting. Students who register for the wrong level will be transferred into the appropriate class, if space allows. Otherwise, skaters will be removed from class and issued refunds.

When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Acupuncture is a safe and effective healing technique that has been used for over 2,000 years. With the opioid crisis on the rise, acupuncture has strong scientific support in the treatment of pain and is a great non-pharmaceutical option in pain management. Learn about how acupuncture treats many different pain conditions, most famously known for healing chronic low back pain. In recent years, acupuncture also has been supported by the World Health Organization and continues to gain recognition for improving immunity, sleep, digestion, and stress management. Hear how the use of evidence-based acupuncture can improve your quality of life. At the end of the program, Dr. Berkowicz will provide live demonstrations with interested participants so you can experience the life changing effects of acupuncture.

IT’S ALL ABOUT GOLD David Kaz, President/Precious Metal Buyer, DMK Metal For 5,000 years, people have sought after and prized gold and silver. Through the ages, these metals have been used as a measure of wealth and value and as a medium of exchange. Gold has been at the center of most, if not all wars, throughout history. Today, gold is used for jewelry and investments, but no longer as money. Join us as David Kaz shares information on the value of gold and silver including the history, the use as money in the United States, it’s uses today, how to evaluate your own items, how to invest, and how to sell. There will be time at the end of the presentation for David to evaluate and appraise one or two of your items that you bring at no charge. Participants should notify the Park District at the time of registration about any medical condition that might require special attention by District staff. Information will remain confidential.

• The instructor and participant agree the participant’s skill level is not appropriate.

All Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee for programs. If you have questions about residency, call the main Registration Office at 847-291-2993.

We want you to be happy with your recreation choices! If you’re not satisfied with a program or instructor, you may ask to repeat the class, transfer to another class or receive a refund. The Park District will try to resolve instructor and/or program issues to your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, the full or prorated refund will be approved. Requests can be made at any Registration Office or by calling 847-291-2993.

All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost. Camps, workshops, before/after school care, golf course green fees, adult sports leagues, daily admissions, passes/punch cards, tickets to entertainment, special events and trips may have nonrefundable deposits and/or special restrictions. Refunds do not apply to program supplies/materials purchased, gift certificates, food and contractual programs. Program Cancellations

• The class is canceled or rescheduled and participant cannot attend at the new time.

When people wait until the last minute to register, classes may be canceled, so register early to avoid disappointment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, those who signed up will be issued a full refund.

We understand that circumstances arise that may lead to a patron’s inability to participate in a class/program. Unless otherwise noted, a request for a transfer or refund can be made if:

• The request is submitted three business days prior to the start of a program.

• The patron cannot participate due to illness or injury (doctor’s note may be required).

Residency

Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times in programs and facilities. That includes respect for all people, equipment and facilities and cooperative, positive participation. The staff will review rules with participants and may dismiss anyone whose behavior endangers safety or negatively affects a program or facility. Are You Covered?

Withdrawal & Transfer Requests

Because we believe every Park District resident should have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs, we will attempt to provide financial assistance to residents faced with financial hardships. Youth Services assists the District with the administration of our scholarship program. Children under the age of 19 who meet the criteria can receive up to $250 per year to participate in recreation programs. We will consider exceptions for families facing extreme financial hardship. Families only need to qualify once per year and application forms are available at the Leisure Center, Sports Center and Village Green Center. If you have questions about the scholarship process, call the Leisure Center at 847-291-2995.

General Registration Information 112

The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants; the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Review your personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain high risk activities require a waiver/release form, which must be signed before the first class.
