Message from Executive Director Molly Hamer Hello Northbrook Resident, The signs of spring are just around the corner. Crocuses will bloom and magnolia buds will grow. Robins will appear and cardinals will begin to sing. Ball fields and golf courses will be prepped and ready for play. Patio furniture is placed and gardens are planted. Daily activities naturally adapt to the transition of longer days and shorter nights. Spring brings fresh opportunities and renewed energy. Our team at the Northbrook Park District has a litany of offerings to delight and entertain you. We bring you the freedom to choose how you spend your leisure time. Join the ensemble on stage of our 11th Community Theatre production, or sit back and enjoy the multi-generational performance in the comfort of a theatre seat. Sign up for an adult pickleball league or relax on a bench taking in the beauty at one of our many parks. Try a new activity, sign up for a beloved program or enjoy a free special event. The menu of options is endless and we are here for you when it is your time to play. And speaking of menus, the Acorn Grill + Terrace is one of Northbrook’s newest restaurants offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hosting a magnificent outdoor terrace with an unmatched setting for drinking and dining, the Acorn Grill + Terrace is the perfect place to go when you are ready to kick back and relax. Located at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, this new facility also affords opportunities for special events and gatherings in the beautiful indoor-outdoor rental space adjacent to the restaurant. With big screen TVs in the dining room and delicious menu selections, this family friendly full service restaurant is close to home for you to enjoy a meal, a cocktail, a relaxing experience. The Northbrook Park District strives for excellence and is proud to be the recipient of several awards including Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Outstanding Facility of the Year for Techny Prairie Activity Center and Best Green Practices and Arts in the Parks awards from Illinois Association of Park Districts. Our commitment to stewardship is rooted in our commitment to you, our residents. As an award winning Park District, we are proud to serve you. Prescribed Burn Program Project Description The Village of Northbrook and the Northbrook Park District practice ecological prescribed burns as a natural maintenance system. Burning only a section of prairie or natural area each year allows refuge for wildlife habitat. Prescribed burning is a major tool for preserving biological diversity. Planned burns can decrease competition from weeds, reduce the buildup of vegetative fuel, increase plant vigor and support a balance of minerals within the soil. Funding for these projects is provided through a Green Region Grant from ComEd and Openlands. The timing of the burns is weather dependent and usually takes place in February, March or April.

Locations Prior to the burns, postcards will be mailed to nearby residents informing them of the burns. Websites will also be updated during the burns to inform residents on changes due to weather or other circumstances. Visit nbparks.org for more information including burn schedules and location maps. In 2021, Northbrook Park District completed two large capital projects: the construction of Techny Prairie Activity Center and golf course renovations and a new clubhouse at Heritage Oaks Golf Club. Through a Comprehensive Master Plan process conducted in 2016, several priorities for investment were identified based on community input, inventory and analysis comparisons to state and national standards, demographics and financial capabilities. In addition to sustainable building construction decisions, environmentally sound plans were developed outside at each facility as well.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable Construction - A Natural Choice

At Techny Prairie Activity Center, a 200-foot bioswale in the parking lot incorporates native plants to collect, manage and filter stormwater prior to sending it to the nearby prairie basin and a branch of the Chicago River. The landscape plan includes pollinator-friendly naturalized areas, along with 68 newly planted trees and the development of no-mow spaces to reduce the use of chemicals and gas-powered machinery. At Heritage Oaks Golf Club, an eye toward sustainability led the decision making for both the golf course renovations and the new clubhouse construction. While the property was already Audubon certified, natural components were enhanced by expanding ponds, planting 356 trees, and using permeable pavers to improve stormwater management, retention and reuse on the property.

Village of Northbrook Earth Month Activities In celebration of Earth Day, the Village of Northbrook is offering several events: • Tree Giveaway - Reserve a free tree online • Volunteer Event at Somme Woods - April 3 • Earth Day Recycling Event - April 23

Camp Details

We are committed to providing a variety of safe, active learning opportunities that promote teamwork, friendship and fun. Through individual successes and team activities, campers develop a stronger sense of self-confidence, while creating memories that can last a lifetime. Families will receive an email with the Camp Parent Handbook with detailed information in May.

Camp Locations

Locations are listed next to each camp.

Camper Groups

Camp groups are formed by age/grade and school. Friendship requests are not available.

Lunch Program

Families have the option of ordering lunches for campers through Kiddos Catering. In May, parents/guardians will receive details about the program, menu choices and ordering instructions. Some camps may not participate in the Kiddos catering program.

NSSRA – Inclusion Services

The Park District partners with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) to offer recreation programs and services to residents of all abilities. NSSRA support staff is available to work alongside program participants, assisting with special needs and behavior. Participants requesting support should check the ADA box on the Registration Form. If you are registering online, call 847-291-2993 to discuss your camper’s needs and request additional support. Call at least one month prior to camp start dates to review your NSSRA support plan.

Residency

Some Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee. If you have questions about residency, call one of our registration offices.

Waiting Lists

If the camp you want is full, we encourage you to place your child on a waiting list (one per child per week/session). We will call you if space becomes available and will require payment within 24 hours of notification to confirm enrollment.

Transfers

We recognize that some campers may need to change their enrollment due to scheduling conflicts. Transfer requests will be granted only if the desired program has openings.

Payment Plan

Payment plans are available for all camps. Register at nbparks.org to utilize the payment plan. If the available payment plan does not work for you, give us a call. All balances must be paid in full before the start of the program. Scholarships are also available. See page 100 for details.

Refunds/Withdrawal Fees

All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.

Are You Covered?

The Northbrook Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants as the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Participants should review their personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain higher-risk activities require a separate waiver which must be signed before the first session.

ePACT

The Northbrook Park District uses ePACT Network for better safety! ePACT is a secure emergency network that we will use to collect medical and emergency contact information electronically. ePACT replaces paper forms and ensures we have a way to communicate with you in the event of any changes at program, an illness, injury, or larger scale emergency. All families will receive an invitation to complete their member record at the email address on file.

Youth Leagues Team up with the Northbrook Park District! The emphasis is on the development of the child as an individual and an athlete, rather than the competitive aspect of winning. The program strives to provide a fun and safe atmosphere in which children learn respect, sportsmanship and skills. All players receive equal playing time and are introduced to all positions.

Team Formation Teams are organized by grade, school and gender but may be combined if necessary. Staff contact you when these changes are needed and they will provide you with an opportunity to decide if the change is right for your child. Friendship requests are available online at nbparks.org and at all registration offices. Requests must be reciprocal and submitted prior to the early fee deadline. Team formation begins soon after the early fee deadline. Players registering after team formation begins are placed on a waitlist and added to teams if space is available, in the order of registration, without regard for school or friendship requests.

Equipment Outdoor Soccer: The Park District provides uniforms (jersey, shorts and socks) that should be worn to all games, unless cooler temperatures warrant extra layers. Each player is responsible for the following: all-purpose athletic rubber cleats, shin guards and a ball (size #3 for pre-kindergarten-grade 1, #4 for grades 2-6)

Practices/Games Outdoor Soccer: Weekday practices begin the week of March 28; coaches announce days, times and locations. Games are scheduled to begin the weekend of Saturday, April 9. Each team will play a seven-game season, weather permitting. There are no games April 16 and 17 and May 28 and 29. Additional games or make-ups may be played on Saturday or Sunday. Coaches Needed Interested in coaching? Volunteers are needed to coach our youth for approximately three hours per week; no experience is necessary. GENERAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Camps, workshops, before/after school care, golf course green fees, adult sports leagues, daily admissions, passes/punch cards, tickets to entertainment, special events and trips may have nonrefundable deposits and/or special restrictions. Refunds do not apply to program supplies/materials purchased, gift certificates, food and contractual programs. Program Cancellations When people wait until the last minute to register, classes may be canceled, so register early to avoid disappointment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, those who signed up will be issued a full refund. Residency All Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee for programs. If you have questions about residency, call the main Registration Office at 847-291-2993. Health Conditions Participants should notify the Park District at the time of registration about any medical condition that might require special attention by District staff. Information will remain confidential. Code of Conduct Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times in programs and facilities. That includes respect for all people, equipment and facilities and cooperative, positive participation. The staff will review rules with participants and may dismiss anyone whose behavior endangers safety or negatively affects a program or facility.

100

Are You Covered? The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants; the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Review your personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain high risk activities require a waiver/release form, which must be signed before the first class. Scholarship Requests Because we believe every Park District resident should have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs, we will attempt to provide financial assistance to residents faced with financial hardships. Youth Services assists the District with the administration of our scholarship program. Children under the age of 19 who meet the criteria can receive up to $250 per year to participate in recreation programs. We will consider exceptions for families facing extreme financial hardship. Families only need to qualify once per year and application forms are available at the Leisure Center, Sports Center and Village Green Center. If you have questions about the scholarship process, call the Leisure Center at 847-291-2995. Inclusion We encourage participation by everyone and provide reasonable accommodations in accordance with ADA standards. If you require program assistance for special needs, check the box on the Registration Form to be contacted by the District’s NSSRA Inclusion Liaison. Questions? Call 847-291-2995. ADA Compliance The Northbrook Park District provides recreation opportunities for all residents and encourages participation by everyone. Programs and services are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination. We are happy to make reasonable modifications to assist anyone with special needs who wants to participate in a program. Please contact the District in advance of a program to discuss any necessary accommodation or if you need Park District materials in a special format, such as Braille, large print or audio cassette. The Park District provides a grievance process for resolution of any ADA complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of a disability. If you have any concerns about Park District ADA compliance, contact Eileen Loftus, Director of Recreation, c/o Northbrook Park District, 545 Academy Drive, Northbrook, Illinois, 60062, phone 847-291-2960 or email eloftus@nbparks.org. The Park District is reviewing its programs and practices in regard to ADA requirements and invites comments from the public.

Commitment to Quality We want you to be happy with your recreation choices! If you’re not satisfied with a program or instructor, you may ask to repeat the class, transfer to another class or receive a refund. The Park District will try to resolve instructor and/or program issues to your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, the full or prorated refund will be approved. Requests can be made at any Registration Office or by calling 847-291-2993. Withdrawal & Transfer Requests We understand that circumstances arise that may lead to a patron’s inability to participate in a class/ program. Unless otherwise noted, a request for a transfer or refund can be made if: • The request is submitted three business days prior to the start of a program. • The instructor and participant agree the participant’s skill level is not appropriate. • The class is canceled or rescheduled and participant cannot attend at the new time. • The patron cannot participate due to illness or injury (doctor’s note may be required). Refunds All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.
