The Park District Board of Commissioners is the legal governing authority for Park District business. Park District residents elect Commissioners to serve a four-year term. Board meetings are open to the public and are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Joe Doud Administration Building.

Message from Executive Director

Hello Northbrook Resident, Strong, healthy and resilient communities understand and lean into the power of parks. The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has identified three pillars that are the foundation of what parks and recreation agencies do. “On any given day, someone is being positively affected through parks and recreation – whether they are taking a walk on a trail or a fitness class at a community center, listening to music in the park or reaping the benefits of clean air and water because of preserved open space.” – NRPA The Northbrook Park District demonstrates the NRPA’s initiatives and continues to be a national leader in Parks & Recreation through our program offerings, state of the art facilities and ongoing quest for improving operational efficiencies. We support the three pillars in the following ways: Health and Wellness: With over 543 acres of open space and nine miles of multi-use trails, Northbrook Park District encourages outdoor recreation in our parks. In addition, the construction of Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) provides a variety of fitness and recreation opportunities in our new facility. Equity: All are welcome at Northbrook Park District. In July we re-opened the playground at Stonegate Park which offers many inclusive play features along with a new synthetic turf safety surface. With an eye to equity, we work with Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook to offer recreation scholarships to those in need. Funding from Northbrook Bank & Trust, N.A. provides support for these opportunities.

In addition, TPAC is the third Net Zero certified building in the state of Illinois, generating more energy than it uses through over 800 solar panels on the facility roof. Serving as the Executive Director for the Northbrook Park District has been the culmination of my rewarding career in Parks & Recreation. As this summer comes to an end, so does my time with the Northbrook Park District. With my upcoming retirement, a new Executive Director will be appointed by the Board of Commissioners in August. The residents of Northbrook are proud of their community. Every day I have seen active people embracing all that is available to them through Park District offerings. It has been very gratifying to work for a Board of Commissioners and with a team of professionals that are deeply committed to providing excellence to the residents. The Northbrook community is so fortunate to have passionate employees throughout the Park District. The team is dedicated to delivering phenomenal services. People turn to their parks to find fulfillment in their free time, to find fitness, inner peace, competition, healthy living, artistic expression, connection with others and connection with nature. It is my belief that this “play time” is essential for a balanced, purposeful life. Spending my lifetime in a career that provides such options for people has been a gift. Leading the team at the Northbrook Park District has been the bonus prize! Remember to play every day!

IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES The Northbrook Park District creates an annual Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) as part of the Budget process. The document is a forecast of the administrative, park, facility, and golf projects and purchases for the upcoming year and beyond. The CIP is developed using the Goals, Strategies and Action Plan from the District’s Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP) Update adopted by the Park Board of Commissioners in March 2022. The complete CIP and CMP documents can be viewed at nbparks.org. In 2023, three playgrounds were scheduled for replacement as part of this planning process.

Countryside Park

A new playground was installed at Countryside Park located at the corner of Walnut Circle and Oakwood Road. This project also includes new park benches and a new drinking fountain. A grand opening party was held on June 6 to celebrate.

Stonegate Park

Stonegate Park is a 10.61 acre community park that includes two playground areas, ball fields, six pickleball courts, a soccer field, and pathways. The renovation project completed in June 2023 included replacement of the playground equipment last installed in 1999, installation of new synthetic turf safety surface, a new shade structure and path improvements.

The playground at Stonegate Park is the Park District’s most inclusive playground. The new equipment, including playground colors and final design selection, was informed by community input gathered through two neighborhood surveys in 2022. In addition, a cross-functional team from the Parks and Planning Department and the Recreation Division worked together with representatives from Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association to select equipment to best serve park users with special needs.

Oaklane Park

The project at Oaklane Park, 636 Berglund Place, was awarded a $400,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant from the lllinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). The Park District worked with Kids Around the World who removed the playground at no charge and then refurbished and repurposed the equipment for delivery to children in need of recreational opportunities. This park renovation is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2023 and includes the following amenities: • Conversion of the two tennis courts Kids Around to one tennis court and two pickleball the World courts with new fencing. removes the old playground • Replacement of both the 2–5 year old equipment. and 5–12 year old play structures. • Reconfiguration of the swing area to include an accessible path to the transfer swing. • New 20′×20′ picnic shelter and game tables. • The addition of a .2 mile trail loop around the park perimeter. • New benches, drinking fountain with dog bowl, bike rack and recycling/trash receptacles. • Installation of native plantings, seeding, sodding, a butterfly garden and interpretive signage.

IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES

PLANNING FOR 2024

Planning is currently underway for three more park and playground projects in 2024.

Williamsburg Square Park

This park project received a $600,000 OSLAD grant from IDNR. The plans currently include new playground equipment, replacement of asphalt surfacing on the basketball and racquet courts, replacing one of the existing tennis courts with two pickleball courts, resurfacing the park pathway, adding native plantings and installing new benches, drinking fountain and small shelter.

Greenfield Park

The District recently completed the community input phase of this project which will include the removal and replacement of the playground equipment, the installation of ADA access to the basketball court and seating area and renovations to the basketball court.

Wescott Park

Community input for this park also concluded this summer. The project includes the replacement of the 2–5 year old playground at this location, replacing equipment that was installed in 2005.

Grab a hard hat and join us for this free family event that allows children to see, touch and explore a variety of trucks and emergency vehicles. 18 Years and Older Techny Prairie Park and Fields Grab your pet and leash for the Halloween Pet Parade this year at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. This is the time of the year to show off your wonderful pets. Take part in our pet parade followed by a costume contest, including winners for best look-alike pet, pet and owner combo costume and the spookiest animal. After the parade, there will be some leashfriendly activities. Must be 18 and over to register and must be present at the event.

5 Years and Older Techny Prairie Park and Fields Join us for the Halloween 3K and Fun Run/Walk through our Halloween Techny Prairie Park and Fields course. MIXED DOUBLES PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT Saturday, December 16

Ages 18 and Older • Techny Prairie Activity Center These fun-filled, single day round robin mixed doubles tournaments (non-elimination) are for Intermediate and Advanced level players. Intermediate matches will all begin at 9am, Advanced matches will all begin at 2pm. Check-In begins at 8:30am for Intermediate teams and 1:30pm for Advanced teams. Each tournament will last approximately 3 hours. $75 will be awarded to the Champions and $50 to the 2nd place teams. A mixed doubles team must consist of one female and one male player. Fitness Floor The 6,000 square foot cardio, strength and functional fitness area offers a wide assortment of equipment to take you through your fitness journey. Techny Prairie Activity Center memberships provide flexibility for individuals or households to have access to all the facility’s amenities. Initial memberships require a twelve-month commitment.

Membership is offered at a reduced rate. Youth members may attend scheduled youth open gyms, use the indoor track with parent or caregiver supervision and have access to the gym when it is not in use for programs.

Personal, Partner and Small Group Training Personal, partner and small group training provides the best way to reach your fitness goals. Nationally certified Personal Trainers can help improve strength, flexibility and overall fitness while adding motivation, accountability and variety to your workouts. Strong Teen Teens ages 13–14 can learn facility etiquette and how to exercise safely through this unique program. Completion of three one-hour sessions and continued adherence to facility rules and expectations provides these members the opportunity to work out at TPAC independently. This program requires a fee and pre-registration.

All teams will play the same course conditions, with tee yardages designated for men, women, and senior players. A rolling handicap will be calculated to determine total net score for playoff matches. Teams will be awarded points during the regular season to earn a spot in the playoff match play bracket. In the event of a tie during the regular season, points will be split evenly amongst teams. Youth Golf Leagues LPGA/USGA Girls Golf

Come learn the basics of golf in an all-girl environment, and be empowered, enriched, engaged, exercised and energized! Students learn valuable fundamentals and receive oncourse coaching covering the rules and etiquette of the game. This unique program is led by Melissa Goldberg, an LPGA member, and assisted by current members of the Glenbrook North Girls Golf Team. Coach Melissa is on a mission to teach girls more than just stance and swing. TaeKwonDo, one of the newest Olympic sports, is a 2,000-year-old martial art, offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Master Hong Kim (9th Dan Kukkiwon World TaeKwonDo Headquarters). Note: A $45 uniform fee is required at the first class. Payable by check or cash to KH Kim. Belt testing is offered through KH Kim TaeKwonDo, twice a year at an additional fee. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gears.
