The Park District Board of Commissioners is the legal governing authority for Park District business. Park District residents elect Commissioners to serve a four-year term. Board meetings are open to the public and held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Joe Doud Administration Building.

Hello Northbrook Resident,

The benefits of play are endless. Some people enjoy sports and athletics, others choose theater and music. Some choose active recreation while others prefer passive activities. And some people reading this may embrace all the above! Every individual, from small children to super senior adults, finds their favorite way to spend free time. These leisure activities are crucial for development in young people and essential for a balanced and healthy lifestyle for adults.

Playing sports and participating in arts programming provide children with the opportunity to develop physical, emotional and social skills. These components work together to give children the foundation and desire to be active and involved for life. Socialization and interactive learning afford children positive personal development opportunities. Through the camaraderie of a team, physical activity in adolescence and the feeling of confidence that comes from gaining skills and working toward a goal, children grow in such important ways. Youth programs in this Winter-Spring Guide include everything from Skating School Classes to varied interests such as Improv, Magic Class, Chess Wizards or Cooking Around the World.

The Northbrook Park District offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities for adults as well. Pickleball continues to grow with leagues, lessons and tournaments. Register for adult soccer, tennis or basketball. Other options include exploring watercolor, ceramics or jewelry making while our annual Community Theatre production brings together talent of all ages to perform on stage at the Northbrook Theatre in this year’s production of Matilda.

We are proud to offer a vast array of places to play and programs to guide you! Walk the beautiful indoor track at Techny Prairie Activity Center overlooking the magnificent park, or book the indoor simulators at Heritage Oaks Golf Club to play a famous course like Pebble Beach or host a kids’ birthday party playing Zombie Dodgeball! The Acorn Grill + Terrace is a full service restaurant with ten beers on tap and is a wonderful destination for a family dinner or game day party. Stop by Tuesday through Sunday to enjoy delicious food and a fabulous view.

Through input from neighbors, we opened brand new playgrounds at Cedar Lane Tot Lot and Meadowhill Park this year. We are thrilled to be the recipient of a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the renovation of Oaklane Park in 2023. Stonegate Park and Countryside Park will also receive renovations in the coming year. If you haven’t been by Wood Oaks Green Park, the shoreline stabilization project is now complete with an attractive Rosetta Stone retaining wall and two additional fishing piers located around Lake Shermerville.

Our staff members are dedicated to maintaining these important public assets and offering you a variety of programs, events and services that build community. Be sure to play every day!

NEWSWORTHY NOTES

District Receives Performing Arts Grant

The Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) has awarded Northbrook Park District a grant of $8,600 which will be utilized for the general operating of Performance Arts programming spanning across all age groups including Northbrook Theatre Youth Company (NTYC) and Community Theatre. To qualify for the grant, organizations must show their programs and activities have artistic, educational and cultural value for the areas they serve. This grant funding has supported Northbrook Park District’s high-quality productions and programming for the community annually since 2019.

Audubon International Recertification

Heritage Oaks Golf Club, a Northbrook Park District property, has retained its designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. Heritage Oaks Golf Club was first designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2015 and is one of over 900 courses in the world to hold certification from Audubon International. To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in several areas including environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation and water quality management.

Northbrook Park District Named Best of the Best

The District received three awards from the Illinois Association of Park Districts in October.

Service Award

Commissioner Michael Ziering was recognized for his 15 years of service as an elected member of the Park Board of Commissioners. During his tenure he has served as Board Vice President from 2010–2012, Board President from 2012–2015, and Chair of the Golf Operations Committee since 2010.

Best Friend of Illinois Parks

This award recognizes the five year partnership between Northbrook Park District and Northbrook Bank & Trust Company, N.A., A Wintrust Community Bank. This partnership supports the District’s scholarship program and several community events.

Best Green Practices

The District’s sustainability efforts were recognized with this award for the second year in a row. Highlights of these projects include earning official net zero building status at Techny Prairie Activity Center, being awarded a $939,121 grant from ComEd for LED lighting throughout the District, and becoming recertified by Audubon International at Heritage Oaks Golf Club.

IMPROVING COMMUNITY SPACES

Northbrook Park District develops a comprehensive Capital Improvement Plan annually. Some of the more notable projects completed in 2022 are listed below. These annual plans are informed by the Goals, Strategies and Action Plan from the Comprehensive Master Plan Update approved by the Park Board of Commissioners in 2022. Lake Shermerville Shoreline Stabilization Phases II and III

This Shoreline Stabilization Project, completed in Fall 2022, included the installation of gradually sloped naturalized areas and Rosetta outcrop retaining walls to replace the aging sheet piling along the shoreline at Wood Oaks Green Park. The project plans originally called for a three year construction schedule with Phase I in 2021, Phase II in 2022 and Phase III in 2023. Based on the bids received by the Park District, both Phases II and III were completed in 2022 resulting in a shorter project timeline and significant cost savings. The completed project is a beautiful addition to the park that creates a solution for long-term sustainability of this natural resource.

Two New Playgrounds Built in 2022

Northbrook Park District installed two new playgrounds in 2022, one at Cedar Lane Tot Lot which opened to the public in August and one at Meadowhill Park which opened in September. The playgrounds offer new play structures along with a synthetic turf play surface which replaced the wood chips. Both projects incorporated community input including recommendations for park amenities and selection of the final playground designs. The community was invited to celebrate each location with a Playground Pop Up Party.

“This is one of the best things we get to do,” said Board President Lisa Chalem moments before cutting the ribbon at the new Meadowhill Park playground. “We hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy this park!”

Let’s party together! Book your next celebration with an exciting package at the Leisure Center and Techny Prairie Activity Center. Our staff takes the stress out of your event with full service. Packages include a party facilitator, balloons, candles, water and tableware. Lemonade can be provided upon request. Parties require at least three week’s advance notice and a $75 refundable security deposit. Saturday, March 11 • 2pm–4pm • Ages 5 and Younger • Leisure Center Join us for our first Fun Fair to learn about Preschool and Early Childhood program offerings for children ages 5 and younger! Entertainment, raffles and program demonstrations will occur throughout the 2pm–4pm time frame.

This is a fun-filled, single day round-robin mixed doubles tournament (non-elimination) for 3.5–4.0 level players. Check-In begins 30 minutes before the first match—come early to warm up. Each tournament will last approximately 3 hours. $75 will be awarded to the Champions and $50 to 2nd place teams. A mixed doubles team must consist of one female and one male player. The Northbrook Park District is excited to offer the MLB Pitch Hit & Run competition. PHR is a FREE, 1-day event for boys and girls ages 7–14 and provides an opportunity for youth to compete in the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. Participants will complete in either the Baseball or Softball Division and have the opportunity to advance through three levels of competition including the Finals held during the 2023 MLB All-Star Game. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 27 at 5pm.

We have half-day options for ages 3–5, full-day camps for ages 5–14, and one-week camps to fill your child’s summer. The choices don’t stop there. We still offer payment plans, extended care and a lunch program from Kiddos Catering.

We are committed to providing a variety of active learning opportunities that promote teamwork, friendship and fun. Through individual successes and team activities, campers develop a stronger sense of self-confidence, while creating memories that can last a lifetime.

Camp groups are formed by age, school and/or ability. Friendship requests are not available; children in the same camp will have the opportunity to be with their friends in other groups throughout the day.

Counselors in Training Program Returning this Summer!

Calling all 13 to 15-year-olds! Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program returns this summer! Spend your summer gaining job experience and training, spending time with kids and having fun! Limited spots are available. More information can be found on page 22.

Camp Details

Camper Groups

Camp groups are formed by age/grade and school. Friendship requests are not available.

Lunch Program

Families have the option of ordering lunches for campers through Kiddos Catering. In May, parents/guardians will receive details about the program including menu choices and ordering instructions. Some camps may not participate in the Kiddos catering program.

NSSRA – Inclusion Services

The Park District partners with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) to offer recreation programs and services to residents of all abilities. NSSRA support staff is available to work alongside program participants, assisting with special needs and behavior. Participants requesting support should check the ADA box on the Registration Form. If you are registering online, call Nancy Eschker at 847-291-2995 to discuss your camper’s needs and request additional support. Call at least one month prior to camp start dates to review your NSSRA support plan.

Residency

Some Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee. If you have questions about residency, call 847-291-2993.

Wait Lists

If the camp you want is full, we encourage you to place your child on a waiting list (one per child per week/session). If space becomes available, wait list participants will be contacted. Payment is required within 24 hours of this notification to confirm enrollment.

Transfers

We recognize that some campers may need to change their enrollment due to scheduling conflicts. Transfer requests will be granted only if the desired program has openings.

Payment Plan

Payment plans are available for all camps. Register at nbparks.org/summercamps to utilize the payment plan. If the available payment plan does not meet your needs, call 847-291-2993. All balances must be paid in full before the start of the program. Scholarships are also available. See page 120 for details.

Refunds/Withdrawal Fees

All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.

Are You Covered?

The Northbrook Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants as the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Participants should review their personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain higher-risk activities require a separate waiver which must be signed before the first session.

ePACT

The Northbrook Park District uses ePACT Network for better safety. ePACT is a secure emergency network used to collect medical and emergency contact information electronically. ePACT replaces paper forms and ensures we have a way to communicate with you in the event of any changes at program, an illness, injury, or larger scale emergency. All families will receive an invitation to complete their member record using the email address on file.

Kick off the summer with this one-week sports camp. Campers are grouped by age and enjoy a variety of sports and related activities. Welcome to Camp Sunshine, where the fun never stops. Campers will enjoy a variety of arts and crafts, sports, games, scavenger hunts and more based on a daily theme. Kaleidoscope Kids

Skate & Dance Camp

Skate & Dance Camp is designed for skaters in Basic 1 through Pre-Free Skate and beyond. Campers enjoy daily skating instruction, practice time and an off-ice dance class in this popular camp that groups children by grade and skating level. Skaters in the Pre-Free Skate & Up camp receive additional ice time. Sessions include arts and crafts, cookouts, field trips and open swim times. At the end of each session, skaters present a short recital for family and friends. A test session will be held at the end of each session. Staff to camper ratio is 1:8 for ages 5–7 and 1:10 for ages 8 and up. A similar Winter Break Camp is available during the two-week school break. Registration fee per session. No camp 7/4.

Hockey Training Academy

Players focus on training and improving skills through concentrated exercise and drills, coached by the Northbrook Hockey League staff. Daily swimming included. PM Care available. Theatre Arts Workshop

Session I of Theatre Arts Workshop focuses on a musical production. This summer we will produce CATS: Young Actors Edition. Athletic Adventures

Athletic Adventures is a recreational sports camp for junior high children of all ability levels. Campers learn and compete in team sports including basketball, soccer, flag football, lacrosse, tennis, floor hockey, volleyball and more. This camp combines sports along with other recreational activities, a variety of mini day trips, swimming and weekly field trips. Team building, self-awareness and sportsmanship will also be a focus. Counselors in Training

Counselors in Training invites 14 to 15-year-old campers to participate in Northbrook Camps while learning to mentor, program, and troubleshoot their way through issues all while training to become a camp counselor. This program requires an application, an interview, and a four-week commitment, as well as the desire to be a leader in the summer camp community. Not all applicants will be selected.

Players develop skills to play competitive golf. Our tournament-experienced staff covers the advanced short game and full swing techniques, as well as course management, green reading, pre-shot routines, shot selection, mental strategies, practice and scoring techniques. Techny Prairie Activity Center memberships provide flexibility for individuals or households to have access to all the facility’s amenities. Initial memberships require a twelve-month commitment.

Individual Adult

(Ages 18-64)

Membership

Start with an individual adult membership and add on household members residing at the same address at a reduced rate with our build a membership plan.

Senior Membership (Ages 65+)

A discount is offered to those ages 65 and up.

Teen Membership (Ages 13-17)

Teens ages 13–17 are invited to enjoy all the benefits of a full membership! Purchase and completion of the Strong Teen program is required for teens under 15 before using their membership.

Youth Membership (Ages 11-12)

Membership is offered at a reduced rate. Youth members may attend scheduled youth open gyms, use the indoor track with parent or caregiver supervision and have access to the gym when it is not in use for programs.

Home for the winter break and need a place to workout? Visit TPAC and sign up for the College Winter Break Special! Strong Teen

Teens ages 13–14 can learn facility etiquette and how to exercise safely through this unique program. Completion of three one-hour sessions and continued adherence to facility rules and expectations provides these members the opportunity to work out at TPAC independently. This program requires a fee and pre-registration.

Kids’ Corner childcare is now open. Kids’ Corner is available for children ages 3 months through 10 years old. INDOOR GOLF SIMULATORS

Join us year-round at Heritage Oaks Golf Club to play golf on the best courses from all around the world on our state-of-the-art Full Swing Pro simulators. Enjoy food and beverages from the Acorn Grill + Terrace while you play.

Simulator rentals are available daily and can be made up to one week in advance. Rates are per simulator, per hour and the cost can be split amongst the golfers in your group.

HERITAGE OAKS SIMULATOR LEAGUE

18 Years and Older

Code: 18862 Compete in our indoor virtual golf league this offseason at Heritage Oaks. Our Full Swing Golf simulators feature the best graphics and real time ball flight on world class golf courses such as Pebble Beach, PGA National, St. Andrews Links, nine TPC Courses and more.

League Format:

Two-player teams will post a weekly gross score on six predetermined golf courses over the course of the seven-week regular season. All teams will play the same course conditions, with tee yardages designated for men, women and senior players. A rolling handicap will be calculated to determine total net score.

Teams will be awarded points during the regular season to earn a spot in the playoff match play bracket. In the event of a tie during the regular season, points will be split evenly amongst teams.

Regular Season: 1/2–2/19, Play Six 9-Hole Rounds in seven weeks Playoffs: 2/20–3/12

Playoff Format: 9-Hole Matches with an 18-Hole Championship Match

In addition to analyzing your shots, choose from a variety of engaging and fun interactive games that will help improve your golf game.

The Par 3 Anetsberger Golf Course is located in Techny Prairie Park and Fields at 1750 Techny Road. The golf course provides an excellent opportunity to walk a quick 9 and sharpen your short game skills. Hole yardages range from 95 to 190 yards and forward tees play from 60 to 120 yards. The Anetsberger facility also offers a large short game practice area with a putting green, chipping green, 2 bunkers and 40 yards of fairway to work on your wedge game. The Golf Shop at Anetsberger stocks a wide variety of equipment and apparel for men, women and children.

Enjoy up to 18 holes of golf per day, Monday–Friday and 9 holes on weekends and holidays at Anetsberger Golf Course. Additional rounds can be purchased for $5 each. Tee it up with a family foursome! NGA Youth League

Get outside and play some golf after school with friends and see how much fun the game can be. NGA Youth Travel League

Swing into spring training to prepare for travel teams and summer tournaments to take your game to the next level. Practice sessions are more goal-oriented and focus on developing full swing, short game, course management techniques and mental game strategies to lower scores. Players are responsible for arranging transportation to practices and tournaments. Registrations are due by Tuesday, March 28. Practices take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays; tournaments are on Saturdays. Registration includes:

LPGA/USGA Girls Golf

Come learn the basics of golf in an all-girl environment, and be empowered, enriched, engaged, exercised and energized! Students learn valuable fundamentals and receive oncourse coaching covering the rules and etiquette of the game. This unique program is led by Melissa Goldberg, an LPGA member, and assisted by current members of the Glenbrook North Girls Golf Team. Coach Melissa is on a mission to teach girls more than just stance and swing. Utilizing the 5 E’s of Girls Golf as a framework, she teaches girls invaluable life-skills, while enhancing their confidence and self-esteem both on and off the course.

Hot Shots Sports: Flag Football

Players experience daily scrimmages with active instruction and tips from the coaching staff. Players are encouraged to employ skills used in football such as running pass routes, play calling, defensive positioning, the fundamentals of blocking and pass coverage. Hot Shots: Basketball Clinic 201

Players begin to develop more advanced skills such as various guard/post techniques, setting screens, moving without the ball and offensive spacing. Defensive instruction includes man-to-man, denying the ball, help-line and boxing out. Players spend time developing their shot using proper mechanics to be effective further from the basket. TaeKwonDo

TaeKwonDo, one of the newest Olympic sports, is a 2,000-year-old martial art, offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Master Hong Kim (9th Dan Kukkiwon World TaeKwonDo Headquarters).

Note: A $45 uniform fee is required at the first class. Payable by check or cash to KH Kim. Belt testing is offered through KH Kim TaeKwonDo, twice a year at an additional fee. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gears. Refunds are not allowed after the second week of classes.

Lightning Warning Systems

The Northbrook Park District has two lightning warning systems. One is located at Heritage Oaks Golf Club with ancillary units at West Park and Wood Oaks Green Park. The other unit is located at Techny Prairie Park and Fields with ancillary units at the Chalet in Meadowhill Park and Village Green Park.

Strike Guard monitors cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning. The lightning warning system will activate when there is an immediate lightning threat in the area. When this occurs you must seek shelter immediately. The unit will deactivate when the immediate threat has passed.

Activation (an immediate lightning threat is present)

One uninterrupted (15-second) siren will sound and a strobe will flash. Deactivation (the system has determined conditions are safe)

Three 5-second blasts will sound and the strobe will go off.

Testing takes place on Tuesdays at 9:30am for the lightning systems. Be sure not to confuse testing with an actual alarm! Testing will not take place if there is threatening weather.

YOUTH LEAGUES

Team up with the Northbrook Park District! The emphasis of our Youth Sports Leagues is on the development of the child as an individual and an athlete, rather than the competitive aspect of winning. The program strives to provide a fun and safe atmosphere in which children learn respect, sportsmanship and skills. All players receive equal playing time and are introduced to all positions.

Team Formation

Teams are organized by grade, school and gender but may be combined if necessary. Staff contact you when these changes are needed and they will provide you with an opportunity to decide if the change is right for your child. Friendship requests are available online at nbparks.org/friendship-request-form

Requests must be reciprocal and submitted prior to the early fee deadline. Team formation begins soon after the early fee deadline. Players registering after team formation begins are placed on a waitlist and added to teams if space is available, in the order of registration, without regard for school or friendship requests.

Indoor Soccer: League format is games only. Indoor soccer begins Sunday, January 22. Game times are between 11:30am and 6pm. Games will be one hour in length during this time. Teams play six games at Greenbriar School.

Outdoor Soccer: The season is scheduled to begin the weekend of Saturday, April 15. Each team will play a six-week season, weather permitting. There are no games May 13 or May 27. Additional games or makeups may be played on Saturday or Sunday.

Pre-K and Kindergarten leagues have practices before their games on Saturdays. 1st–6th grade participants have one weekday practice with their team; the day, time and location of your weekday practice is set up by your coach. 3rd–6th grade participants also receive a weekly Thursday skills training session with Chicago Fire coaches.

Winter Basketball Leagues: Practices begin Saturday, January 7; coaches will announce days, times and locations. Games are scheduled to begin the weekend of January 14. Each team will play a seven-game season with weekday games possible. Leagues may be combined based on enrollment. Game times and locations are subject to change. Little Jammers do not practice during the week.

Equipment

Indoor Soccer: Wear exercise pants or shorts with shin guards and athletic shoes. Cleats should not be worn for indoor soccer. T-shirts are provided.

Outdoor Soccer: The Park District provides uniforms (jersey, shorts and socks) that should be worn to all games, unless cooler temperatures warrant extra layers. Each player is responsible for the following: all-purpose athletic rubber cleats, shin guards and a ball (size #3 for pre-kindergarten–grade 1, size #4 for grades 2–6). Practice equipment is provided to all coaches prior to the season’s start.

Basketball: The Park District provides a jersey that should be worn to all games for grades 2–8. T-shirts are provided for Little Jammers.

Coaches Needed!

Volunteers are needed to coach our youth for approximately three hours per week; no experience is necessary. Not sure if you have what it takes? The Park District will conduct preseason training with an emphasis on player and skill development, sportsmanship and fun. Northbrook Boys Lacrosse Leagues

Join the Northbrook Park District for the Boys Lacrosse League for the 2023 Spring Season. The league welcomes all levels of players. Teams will participate and play in the Illinois Boys Lacrosse Association (IBLA) league and instruction is provided by Glenbrook North Coaches. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays with games on the weekends. Players need to bring a helmet, gloves, arm guards, stick, athletic cup and shoulder pads to all games and practices. A team jersey is included in the fee.

If you are planning on playing this season, we ask that you register by March 6 as that is the deadline for us to enter teams into the IBLA League.

TENNIS

The Northbrook Park District tennis program includes neighborhood facilities and classes provided by the Northbrook Racquet Club, 2995 Dundee Road. Classes are available for children and adults.

The District maintains 19 outdoor courts that are open from April 1 until mid-October. The District occasionally reserves courts for private lessons, tournaments, schools and league play. Notification of court closings are posted at nbparks.org. A patron with an authorized permit from the Park District has priority over walk-on players.

To reserve a specific court at the rental fee of $15/hour (resident) or $20/hour (non-resident) call 847-291-2993. League play and instructor led lessons are allowed only by permit.

Court Rules

Help the Park District provide an enjoyable tennis season by following court rules, posted at all facilities. Players must wear shirts on the courts and soft, rubber-soled shoes; black-soled shoes are not allowed. Only authorized tennis instructors are allowed to conduct lessons on Park District courts and the courts should be used only for tennis and pickleball activities. The Park District is not responsible for personal items.

Group Lesson Information

In cooperation with the Northbrook Racquet Club, the Northbrook Park District offers tennis classes for players at all levels. Classes are one hour and players should bring their own racquets, unless otherwise noted.

Adult Tennis Rating System

1.0 Just starting to play tennis.

1.5 Has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.

2.0 Needs on-court experience. Has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play.

2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.

3.0 Fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up and one-back.

3.5 Has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. Starting to exhibit more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.

4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident. Rallies may be lost due to impatience.

4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponent’s. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.

Outdoor Pickleball Court Permits and Rentals

Park District outdoor courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis. However, anyone who wants to reserve a specific court can arrange a rental for $15/hour (resident) or $20/hour (nonresident) by calling 847-291-2993. League play and lessons are allowed only by permit. Visit nbparks.org to check court availability.

Pickleball Court Rules

Help the Park District provide an enjoyable pickleball season by following the court rules posted at all facilities. Players must wear shirts on the courts and soft, rubber-soled shoes; black-soled shoes are not allowed. Only authorized pickleball instructors are allowed to conduct lessons on Park District courts. The courts should only be used for pickleball activities. The Park District is not responsible for items left behind. A patron with an authorized permit from the Park District has priority over walk-on players.

In cooperation with the Glenbrook Paddle Club the Northbrook Park District offers paddle classes for players at all levels. Join one of our many new paddle classes. Paddle is a mix between Tennis and Squash and is played on a heated outdoor court. It’s a racket sport that combines action with social interaction and fun. It’s an ideal game for all ages and abilities.

Northbrook Sports Center Skating School

The Northbrook Sports Center Skating School follows the official Learn to Skate USA class curriculum. The Skating School will continue to add a personal touch to its educational programs and talent development as it has done for more than 50 years.

The mission of Learn to Skate USA is to provide a fun and positive experience that will instill a lifelong love of skating. Fully supported by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speedskating, with support from Special Olympics, the Professional Skaters Association and the U.S. Ice Rink Association, Learn to Skate USA offers every student a heartfelt welcome, lifelong benefits and fond memories. Figure Skating Lessons

Group lessons are a fun, challenging and reasonably priced way to learn and improve skating skills. Children who can stand in skates without support are ready to learn to skate. Students of all ages learn the proper way to skate from professionals in a structured and supervised setting. Students who register for the wrong level will be transferred into the appropriate class, if space allows. Otherwise, skaters will be removed from class and issued refunds.

General Information

Classes are held at the Northbrook Sports Center and taught in a progressive sequence. New skaters will receive an email with information about what to expect on the first day of class. This includes details about clothing and skate rentals.

Skating Makeup Classes

Skaters can make up two missed classes during the Winter session and one missed class during the Spring session. A makeup slip must be obtained from the Sports Center Office at least 24 hours in advance. Makeups are not allowed during classes that are full; check with the Registration Office for availability.

A tradition since 1969, the Icette program focuses on teamwork, dedication and leadership. Skaters participate in dance-style numbers during the Northbrook-On-Ice production. Skaters who try out for Icettes must be in or entering high school and have passed Free Skate 6 or higher. Jr. Icettes must be entering 7th grade and at least Free Skate 6. Private Off-Ice Training

Coaches wishing to schedule private lessons in the Community Room or Multi-Purpose Room may reserve the space only on the day of training. Daily admission for each student participating is $8 for 30 minutes.

Learn to Speedskate Class

It’s entertaining and exhilarating. Now you can learn the basics of speed skating, such as position, straightaway, corners and starts. All levels are welcome; figure, hockey or speed skates can be worn. After learning the basics, participants will have the skills needed to join the team.

Instructional Hockey

USA Hockey’s Try Hockey For Fee event provides new players an introduction to the sport. The Theatre Department serves the community with high-quality educational and recreational programming in dance, drama and music. Programs include professional productions for family audiences, the Northbrook School of Dance, Northbrook Community Choir, Summer Camps, a vibrant youth theatre program, Improv troupe and community events.

Performing Arts Private Lessons

Instructors provide one-to-one instruction for ages 5 through adult. Each session is customized for each student to develop skills in technique, terms, theory and varied repertoire. The available lesson types are piano, voice, dance or acting.

Northbrook Theatre Youth Company is a recreational theatre program that creates quality theatre productions with young actors. Actors perform ageappropriate musicals, suitable for family viewing. The program is open to students in grades 3–8.

Auditions

Auditions for plays are required. We want to assess the comfort level of children as performers, evaluate their skills and find the role that will best fit their personality and talent. There is no cost to audition.

Register for an audition slot at nbparks.org/auditions. Children will be seen in groups of 10 during their registered audition slot. They will be photographed and fill out an audition form, listing their availability and experience.

Children should prepare 16 bars (measures of music) of a musical theatre song in the proper key; sheet music for song should be hole-punched and in a binder for the accompanist.

Casting

Casting is based on availability, ability and attitude. All who are cast must pay a participation fee ($345 for residents, $435 for non-residents). Participants receive professional instruction, show T-shirt and performance recording.

Spring 2023 Production: Moana JR.

This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana JR. is sure to bring out the hero within each of us. A note on the production – Moana is a celebration of the rich history of Oceania and is based on the beliefs and cultures of real people. Although fictional, the island of Motunui is an amalgamation of many real Oceanic cultures. So, unlike the stories of some musicals, Moana JR. is based on the beliefs and customs of real people. With that in mind, Northbrook Theatre staff will take time to provide educational information, research and tips to ensure our production is produced with a reverent celebration of Oceanic culture.

Spring 2023 Teen Production: Footloose

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

Audition Prep Workshop (New Format!)

Interested actors will experience the full audition process with immediate, direct feedback on ways to improve. There will be two section offerings, Beginner and Experienced. Storybook Drama II

Improv Troupe

This fun, innovative and laughter-filled class will teach the basics of improvisation while strengthening the necessary fundamental building blocks for acting and enhancing overall life skills. DANCE

The Northbrook School of Dance offers a recreation-based approach to dance education with caring, professional dance instructors. Our mission is to introduce students to dance while building self-confidence, poise and physical well-being. Our teachers are dedicated to providing quality instruction through positive reinforcement.

Classes ending in March* will culminate in a Spring Recital on April 8. Costume fees are included in the fee.

*Tutu 2s classes will not participate in the Recital.

Dance Attire

Children may wear leotards or tank tops with tights, skirt or dance pants. Shoe wear should align with class, such ballet slippers, jazz shoes or tennis shoes. Instructors can answer questions about attire.

Tutu 2s is designed for the developmental needs of 2-year-olds. While learning fun, creative movement, children are introduced to socialization skills of sharing and taking turns, along with basic dance line and circle formations. Each child is allowed to have one parent in the room during class.

This outstanding preschool program has guided and enriched children since 1980. Children gain educational and social skills in a traditional program by learning through play and exploration. They experience a variety of well-rounded enrichment activities, including arts and crafts, ceramics, music, theatre, nature studies, cooking, field trips and storytelling.

Sunshine Preschool meets three or four days a week at the Leisure Center. Children must be potty-trained and the appropriate age by September 1. The schedule follows the local school districts’ calendars; there are no classes on school holidays and breaks.

3 Year Olds

This class incorporates use of books and hands-on activities. Children learn through play and create projects to enhance their knowledge. Weekly themes organize the school year.

Pre-K – 4–5 Year Olds

This class enhances social skills and play-based learning with a focus on kindergarten readiness. Activities help children develop an understanding of the alphabet and numbers. Teachers also instruct children on basic computer skills. The school year ends with a graduation ceremony.

Safety Town

Teach your child the importance of safety in everyday situations through songs, games and fun activities with this nationally recognized program. Children travel within miniature city streets to learn about traffic safety, street crossing and bicycle safety (Students need to bring a helmet daily). Other topics include fire safety (including a visit from Northbrook’s Fire Department), pool safety, stranger danger, the use of 9-1-1 and identification of poisons. Parents are invited to attend the last class for a graduation ceremony.

Find a mini-apron for this cooking class that focuses on hidden nutrition in kid-friendly dishes. Cooking Around the World

Senior Center Membership

Members of the Northbrook Senior Center enjoy a wide variety of programs and activities with others who share their interests. Members also receive a discount on many designated fee-based programs as well as a subscription to Momentum, a mailed newsletter. The annual membership fee is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $45 for nonresidents. To become a Senior Center member, call 847-291-2995, or stop by the Leisure Center (3323 Walters Avenue) between 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday.

The Lending Closet

The Northbrook Park District lends medical equipment to Northbrook residents and Senior Center members for up to three months. Equipment includes canes, crutches, raised toilet seats, portable commodes, knee scooters, shower seats/benches, walkers and wheelchairs. There is no charge to check out an item but if items are not returned within three months there is a $25 service fee.

The Senior Center cannot provide supervision, training or adjustment of the equipment. If adjustments are necessary, borrowers can contact their physician or physical therapist. Call 847-291-2995 for more information or to schedule a time to pick-up or drop-off equipment (items must be reserved the business day prior to item pick-up).

Food Pantry Drive-By

The Northbrook Senior Center, in partnership with North Suburban YMCA will hold two Food Pantry Drive-By Drop Off events to support the nutrition assistance efforts of the Northfield Township Food Pantry by collecting non-perishable donations that can make an immediate difference to those experiencing food insecurity.

AARP Driver Safety

AARP Driver Safety program is an eight-hour two-day course for motorists age 55 and older. It focuses on the physical changes that accompany aging and on ways older adult drivers can compensate for these changes to improve their driving skills. Northbrook Dog Park at Coast Guard Park

Welcome to the Northbrook Dog Park, the only public area in Northbrook where dogs are allowed to run and play off-leash.

Batting Cages

Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road

Practice your swing at the batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields.

Advanced Reservation (Recommended)

Reservations secure a batting cage stall and must be paid for in advance online. Walk-ups may be accepted on a first-come, first served basis if capacity limits allow. Batters are required to bring their own bat and helmet.

Skate Park

Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road

If you enjoy in-line skating or skateboarding, you’ll flip for the skate park in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. With ramps, bowls, grinding ledges and rails, the 22,000-square-foot skate park welcomes skateboarders and in-line skaters of all ages. The Northbrook Skate Park is all concrete and large enough to accommodate both beginners and experienced skaters. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Helmets and other protective equipment are required. The park is unsupervised and participants skate at their own risk. Visit nbparks.org/status or rainoutline.com to confirm park status.

Sled Hills

Northbrook Park District has two sled hills located at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and Wood Oaks Green Park. More information about these locations can be found at nbparks. org/sledding and facility status is updated using the Rainout Line at nbparks.org/status

Outdoor Ice Rinks

Outdoor skating is available at Meadowhill Park and Tower Rink. The District needs 72 hours of weather below 15 degrees to begin freezing the rinks, followed by at least 5 days of below-freezing weather before skating is allowed. Bocce Courts

Indian Ridge Park, 3323 Walters Avenue

Bocce is free to drop in and play. Bring your own equipment. Courts can be reserved by calling 847-291-2995 for a fee: $9/hour for residents and $15/hour for non-residents. Park District programs take priority over drop-in play.

Ed Rudolph Velodrome

Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue

The Ed Rudolph Velodrome, an official quarter-mile outdoor bicycle track, attracts top cyclists from the Midwest to weekly races in the summer and fall, and offers training sessions, special events and Friday night bike races for amateur riders of all ages.

Outdoor facilities are available for picnics, parties, corporate events and more. Facilities can be rented May 1 through October 29.

1st business day of February – Community-based events and School Districts

1st business day of March – Resident activities: Individuals or groups (birthdays, family gatherings, cookouts, etc.), organizations, charitable and religious groups and businesses activities

1st business day of April – Non-resident activities: Nonprofit and for-profit, non-resident individuals or groups

Required Permits for Events

The Park District offers its parks and facilities for private rentals. If an individual, group or organization is planning an event for a special use, such as a fundraiser or tournament, all Park District, Village and State Ordinances and timelines must be followed. Special rates may apply. A minimum of 60 days is needed for processing.

General Guidelines

• Permits are required to reserve the space

• Rental fees are due before a permit is issued

• Groups can grill only in areas with District grills

• Smoking and gambling are not permitted

• Alcohol requires a special permit and is available for the Bluegill Shelter only

• Rental groups may be required to submit a Certificate of Insurance

• A security deposit may be required

3. After you submit the completed application, staff contact you within 3–5 business days. Additional forms may be required.

Parks and shelter areas are available to rent from May 1 through October 29, 8am to dusk, with a three-hour minimum. Special rates may apply for resident school and scout groups; policies and fees are subject to change.

Turf Fields

Teams and groups can rent the turf fields at Techny Prairie Park and Fields.

Softball/Baseball Fields

The Northbrook Park District has several ball fields for rent including lighted fields at the following locations: Techny Prairie Park and Fields, Meadowhill Park and Village Green Park.

Tennis/Pickleball Courts

Players or groups can rent the courts at Wood Oaks Green, Crestwood, Oaklane, Williamsburg, Stonegate and West Parks for $15/hour per court for residents and $20/per court for non-residents.

Ed Rudolph Velodrome

Take to the track on an official quarter-mile banked cycling track with lights for evening riding. An indoor space is also available.

Greenbriar Gym

This facility is ideal for all your indoor gym needs and equipment is available for basketball, volleyball, badminton and indoor soccer. The gymnasium can accommodate up to 75 people. For party rentals, an additional fee of $25 is charged for use of the lobby. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Heritage Oaks Golf Club Brook Room and Indoor Simulators

The Brook Room offers expansive views of the courses and provides indoor/outdoor seating for private events accommodating up to 80 guests. Host your next gathering with a spectacular view. Allow our professional event staff to assist you with your next golf outing, meeting or celebration. Leisure Center

The Leisure Center offers a variety of rooms available to rent for your next party or meeting. The gymnasium can accommodate up to 25 people, small rooms can accommodate up to 30 people and large rooms can accommodate up to 75 people. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Northbrook Sports Center

An ideal location for room and ice rentals for your next event. Rent the rink for your private party or host an event during public skate. A certificate of insurance is required for private ice rentals. The Community Room is great for parties and can accommodate up to 100 people and the Multi-Purpose room can accommodate up to 60. The Community Room is equipped with an oven, refrigerator/freezer, sink and microwave. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Prairie Room Rentals

The Prairie Room is the perfect place for your next meeting or occasion. The multipurpose space is equipped with the latest audio and visual technology, allowing users to share information effectively. The rental has an option to add a kitchenette that includes refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, sink and ice maker for a flat fee of $25. The room can accommodate up to 93 people. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Gymnasium Rentals

The gymnasium offers a variety of rental opportunities for practices, games, tournaments, and parties. The gymnasium can accommodate and is lined for 1 high-school basketball court or 2 smaller courts, 2 full-sized volleyball courts, and 4 pickleball courts. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Kids’ Corner Rentals

Kids’ Corner is TPAC’s childcare space during certain hours. This space can be used for meetings or gatherings, includes a TV and a children’s restroom and can accommodate up to 24 people. The room is equipped with countertop space and sink. Rentals require a $75 refundable deposit.

Commitment to Quality

We want you to be happy with your recreation choices! If you’re not satisfied with a program or instructor, you may ask to repeat the class, transfer to another class or receive a refund. The Park District will try to resolve instructor and/or program issues to your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, the full or prorated refund will be approved. Requests can be made at any Registration Office or by calling 847-291-2993.

Withdrawal & Transfer Requests

We understand that circumstances arise that may lead to a patron’s inability to participate in a class/program. Unless otherwise noted, a request for a transfer or refund can be made if:

• The request is submitted three business days prior to the start of a program.

• The instructor and participant agree the participant’s skill level is not appropriate.

• The class is canceled or rescheduled and participant cannot attend at the new time.

• The patron cannot participate due to illness or injury (doctor’s note may be required).

Refunds

All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.

Camps, workshops, before/after school care, golf course green fees, adult sports leagues, daily admissions, passes/punch cards, tickets to entertainment, special events and trips may have nonrefundable deposits and/ or special restrictions. Refunds do not apply to program supplies/materials purchased, gift certificates, food and contractual programs.

Program Cancellations

When people wait until the last minute to register, classes may be canceled, so register early to avoid disappointment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, those who signed up will be issued a full refund.

Residency

All Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee for programs. If you have questions about residency, call the main Registration Office at 847291-2993.

Health Conditions

Participants should notify the Park District at the time of registration about any medical condition that might require special attention by District staff. Information will remain confidential.

Code of Conduct

Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times in programs and facilities. That includes respect for all people, equipment and facilities and cooperative, positive participation. The staff will review rules with participants and may dismiss anyone whose behavior endangers safety or negatively affects a program or facility.

Are You Covered?

The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants; the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Review your personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain high risk activities require a waiver/release form, which must be signed before the first class.

Scholarship Requests

Because we believe every Park District resident should have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs, we will attempt to provide financial assistance to residents faced with financial hardships. Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook assists the District with the administration of our scholarship program. Families who meet the criteria can receive up to $1000 per calendar year towards recreation programs and memberships. Families only need to qualify once per calendar year and application forms are available at the Leisure Center, Sports Center, Techny Prairie Activity Center or by email by contacting customerservice@nbparks.org. The Northbrook Park District provides recreation opportunities for all residents and encourages participation by everyone. Programs and services are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination. We are happy to make reasonable modifications to assist anyone with special needs who wants to participate in a program. Please contact the District in advance of a program to discuss any necessary accommodation or if you need Park District materials in a special format, such as Braille, large print or audio cassette.

The Park District provides a grievance process for resolution of any ADA complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of a disability. Program Waiver and Release

Important Information

The Northbrook Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for this program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or has recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. All hazards and dangers cannot be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks, dangers and injuries may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating and other risks inherent to the particular activity. In this regard, it is impossible for the District to guarantee absolute safety.

Photo/Video Policy

The District takes photos and video of participants in classes, during special events and in the parks. By signing the waiver, you are giving permission to the District to use these photos and video in District publications and on the District website and social media outlets. All photos and video are the property of the District.

Assumption of Risk and Waiver and Release of All Claims

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in this program/ activity, you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with this program/activity (including transportation services and vehicle operations, when provided).

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in this program/ activity and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said participation. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the District, including its officials, agents, volunteers and employees.

Privacy and Security Policy

The Northbrook Park District is committed to maintaining participant’s privacy in compliance with all laws. The Privacy and Security Policy outlines the types of information the Park District gathers and is available at nbparks.org. 
