Momentum Northbrook Senior Center Newsletter
January – March 2024
Dear Senior Center Members, As the winter season descends upon us, we are thrilled to present our newest newsletter brimming with activities and insights to keep you engaged and active. In the fall, we enjoyed seeing our seniors participate in presentations from Barry Bradford and Carol Kerman, programs to learn Hands-Only CPR or how to write a memoir, luncheons, bingo games, and traveling to the White Fence farm to see Denny Diamond & The Jewels together. In November, many of you joined us for our first Annual Senior Center Showcase; volunteering to talk about your dropin programs, visiting with staff and sponsors, and learning about our variety of offerings. We continue to appreciate the friendly spirit of our Senior Center members as together we welcome over 20 new members following the showcase. As we move into colder temperatures, our Senior Center serves as a welcoming refuge during these chilly days, dedicated to ensuring your winter is filled with options that can bring joy, fulfillment and the warmth of community. I am excited to formally introduce myself to those that I have not yet had the opportunity to meet. My name is Nancy Eschker, and I have been overseeing recreation programs and events for numerous years, working with the Northbrook Park District for the past 5 years. Some of you may already be familiar with my presence at the Leisure Center as I have been fortunate to get to know some of you while

assisting with luncheons, bingo and other Senior Center activities in the past. I am delighted to embark on a new journey, now taking charge of Senior and Adult Programming. You will frequently spot me, alongside Sally Norlie, as we form a dynamic team eagerly planning numerous fresh opportunities for all our Senior Center members. Be sure to stop in at the Senior Center office to say hello! In this issue of Momentum, we are pleased to share a wide array of classes including AARP Driver’s Safety, beading, canasta, ceramics, bridge and drawing, Barry Bradford’s compelling presentations on Princess Diana and the Best Movies Filmed in Chicago, a National Puzzle Day Competition and an Estate Planning Workshop. Our upcoming bingo events include Snowman Bingo and Cupid’s Arrow Bingo and we’ll be celebrating Mardi Gras with a delightful luncheon on February 13. For our drop-in programs offered exclusively for members, we have introduced a movie viewing on the 2nd Friday of every month! Keep an eye on your email for updates on the featured film and rest assured, popcorn will be provided. As we eagerly anticipate your visits to the Leisure Center, we want you to know that your presence within our Senior Center community is greatly valued. We look forward to another fantastic year together in 2024. Warm regards,

Drop-in Programming
Our drop-in offerings are designed to provide opportunities for our members to engage in games and activities that they have previously learned and/or are familiar with. While our drop-in classes do not provide instruction, our instructional classes are designed to prepare newcomers for participation in these drop-ins. Socialization offerings do not require any previous knowledge to participate. These are great dropins for new senior members to meet others and engage in conversation and community. Members do not need to notify us in advance before attending. Not a member yet and interested in trying out our drop-ins? Stop in at our front desk for a guest pass.
Drop-in at the Senior Center Library
We continue to offer the library as a drop-in space, however we may need to host programs in the library as well. A weekly schedule will be posted outside the library. Page 2

Letter from the Executive Director Dear Senior Center Members, Last spring, I had the pleasure of meeting some of you during our Focus Group Meetings and Community Open House where you shared your input on improving the Leisure Center. Thanks to your support, we submitted a PARC (Park and Recreation Construction) Grant application in July, and we’re eagerly awaiting the outcome. Since that time, I was appointed Executive Director in September. My career in parks and recreation began in high school, starting with roles like lifeguard, custodian, concessions worker, and Zamboni driver. Despite my initial doubts about college, I later earned a business degree from the University of Phoenix in 2014. The foundation of recreation facility experience, combined with my passion for people, has led me to this leadership role at the Northbrook Park District. I greatly value Northbrook’s educated and conscientious community and am committed to improving our services with the District’s support. My leadership style emphasizes empowerment and innovation, and I look forward to exciting projects like Meadowhill Aquatic Center upgrades and Leisure Center renovations. Collaborating with the Board, we’ll manage taxpayer resources wisely. It was a pleasure to see many of you at the recent Senior Showcase and I’m excited to join your programs, lead bingo games and share meals with you. Wishing you a joyful and prosperous New Year. Warmest regards,
Chris Leiner, Executive Director
