Special Edition – Senior Center Newsletter July-August 2020

Inside This Issue

Hello everyone!

It hardly seems possible that it’s been more than three months since we’ve seen one another at the Senior Center . I have been lucky to be able to see many of you as I have delivered masks, books or puzzles . You’ve been so wonderful to me!

Special thanks to Marcia for the personal delivery of delicious home-baked mandel and banana breads . Kudos to Mady for her gift of amazing homemade spanakopita . Eileen Fine gave me a chocolate muffin and Daisy lent me some of her birthday books to read . Liz, thanks for the tour of your beautiful yard and the taste of a sorrel leaf—I now have some growing in my garden . Finally, to Marv, thanks for continuing to come up with new jokes .

We are excited to be making plans for July programming . I’m very happy to announce the Senior Center will be temporarily relocated to the Village Green Center, 1810 Walters Avenue . The Northbrook Park District has determined that separating the seniors from the camp kids will keep everyone safer with fewer opportunities of exposure . Village Green Center offers plenty of space for physical distancing where we will provide much of the familiar programming you enjoy .

If I can be of any assistance to you and your family, leave a voicemail at 847-897-6162 or send me a message at lwassinger@nbparks.org and you will be contacted between 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.

Your homes are lovely . I’ve visited safely with you while you were in your pajamas or robes at your doors, in your lobbies or yards . Thank you, Luella, for wearing your pretty earrings in anticipation of my visit! The wonderful reception by you and your girls made me cry!

In-person indoor programs will be available in July along with a variety of virtual programs, for those of you who use Zoom . If you don't know how to use Zoom, we have a free class to help! A staff member will walk you through the program .

There are a lot of changes . Some of your programs will take place a little later in the day than you’re used to and only 18 people will be allowed in the room at the same time . You will need to register for each activity, even the “drop-ins .” I know this sounds like a lot of fuss but it is how we will control the number of people in the room to keep us safe!

I’d love for you to join me for my free Senior Center Virtual Weekly Update every Thursday at 3pm . Register at nbparks .org with code #14173 . It will be great to catch up and have a few laughs . I will share updates with you and answer questions . As always, I look forward to seeing you . If you have any questions, call or email me .

Senior Center Updates

Updates due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Thank you for your continued support of the Northbrook Park District! We are following the CDC and State of Illinois guidelines for reopening . For general Park District updates, visit nbparks .org/COVID-19 .

Canceled Programs and Events

If an activity is canceled, you will receive a full refund for the paid amount . If you have questions email customerservice@nbparks .org or call 847291-2993, Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm . Refunds will be applied in form of payment originally made .

Lending Closet Update

Wanted: Emails and Cell Phone Numbers!

An important thing we’ve learned from the COVID -19 pandemic is the Senior Center needs accurate emails and cell phone numbers to effectively communicate with you . Many of our members rarely give out their email address because they don’t want to be overloaded with emails . But we now know this is a great way to keep in touch . An email address is also necessary in order to be able to participate in Park District virtual programming .

In the coming weeks you may be contacted by Park District customer service staff to update email addresses . Many of our emails to you have bounced back as undeliverable when we were trying to send important updates .

If you have not received our communications and/ or if we don't have your phone number or email address, please call 847-291-2993 to update your contact information .

For those who have Lending Closet items for which the three-month time period has expired or is about to expire, the Northbrook Park District is extending the terms of your agreement at no charge . The Leisure Center is closed to the public at this time . Call 847-291-2995 to set up an appointment to borrow or return equipment .

Activities to Share

Have you finished your last book or puzzle and can't get a new one because you are staying home? Don’t despair, we are here to help! If you would like to borrow a book from our Lending Library or a puzzle from our inventory, or even need yarn to help keep busy, contact us to arrange a no-contact delivery or pick up .

Card Playing Temporily On-Hold

Per the Governor’s Executive Order, in-person card games are unable to be offered at this time . The Northbrook Park District continues to monitor guidelines from the CDC and the State of Illinois and we will resume card game drop-ins and classes once restrictions are lifted .

Fire Chief David Crawford Addresses Medical Care Concerns

Northbrook Fire Department's Deputy Chief David Crawford wants to assure seniors about obtaining medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic .

Although the fear is understandable, especially for seniors, Chief Crawford says the reluctance and delay of going to the emergency room for health emergencies or even to a regular doctor's appointment can cause serious, even fatal outcomes . Crawford wants people to know hospitals and medical facilities have instituted safe practices for all visits, including separate entrances .

If you need to call 9-1-1 please don’t wait due to fears of an ambulance being unsafe! The emergency medical staff are dressed in protective gear and Chief Crawford assures that each time an ambulance returns from a call it is meticulously sanitized in preparation for the next patient .

Crawford also wants to remind seniors there are a variety of ways to communicate with your physician in addition to in-person visits . Your doctor may be willing to do a telephone or a video visit . Opting for a video visit may require an easily obtained Zoom account . If you need help with this consider signing up for our free Zoom class (see next article) .

Summer Guide Online

Connect with Zoom

You may have attended Zoom classes or programs or Google hangout meetings with your families and friends . Most of us have come to realize what a great option virtual communication provides . You may even be able to visit your doctor for medication refills or a follow-up visit using Zoom or a similar service .

If you haven’t participated in a Zoom program and want to try, we want to help! Once you sign up for a virtual program you will be sent an email with a meeting instructions link . A link is a strange looking line with letters, numbers and punctuation strung together—underlined and in a different color, usually at the bottom of the message . Next you will click on that link, the link opens, and the screen prompt will ask you to join the meeting . You will click on the button and your host will let into the meeting at the appropriate time .

To use the Zoom program, you need to create a Zoom account by going to Zoom .com . Click on create account to get started .

If you sign up for a class or a program and have trouble making things work, don’t worry! We have staff here during all Zoom programs to assist you with any problems . Call 847-291-2995 for assistance .

Sign up for one of our Free! Virtual Intro to Zoom 2-week classes . either July 22 and 29 (code #14399) or August 19 and 26 (code #14400) .

Due to rapidly changing information concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northbrook Park District has decided to offer the Summer Guides only online at nbparks .org in order to bring you the most updated information about classes, events and other activities . The July edition is available now at nbparks .org .

Our Crafty Ladies are Heroes!

The Northbrook Senior Center Crafty Ladies accepted the challenge to make enough cloth face coverings for each Senior Center member to have one . It quickly became apparent there was a need to supply masks for every person living with Senior Center members, including adult children or caretakers .

We would like to say thanks to the Crafty Ladies, a dedicated and positive group who have made hundreds of masks for our members in a variety of designs . The group includes: Janet Brady, Mary Lynn Saks, Usha Vakharia, Marilyn Ramirez and Sue Winer . They are kind, amazing and talented women!

If you haven’t yet received your free cloth face covering from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, email lwassinger@nbparks .org or call 847-897-6162 and I will arrange to get you one . Besides being required public face wear the face coverings are good-looking and reversible .

Face Covering Reminders

• Be mindful as you put on and remove your masks to not touch the outside of the mask

• Double-check hearing aids to make sure they don't get accidently pulled out

• Watch your earrings when putting on and taking off face coverings

• Hang or lay face coverings flat to dry after washing

• Avoid using the clothes dryer as it could damage the elastic

• Never iron your face mask, the heat will damage the elastic

Senior Center Updates

In Remembrance

Our condolences to the families and friends of those we have lost .

Special Thanks

The Senior Center was the recipient of a $700 donation from one of its members who offered to share their stimulus check with us . The donator wishes to remain anonymous . We gratefully accept this considerable generosity and amazing gesture of support during a difficult time .

Delores Beinlich donated several perfectly-sized, beautiful baskets to the Senior Center to use for our Holiday Party raffle .

Thank you to the Glenbrook Chinese American Community for its donation of 300 disposable face masks . The thoughtful and generous support of the Senior Center is greatly appreciated . The masks will be used by members and patrons who have forgotten to bring a mask for programs as well as staff when they return to work .

Nutrition Assistance

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northfield Township Food Pantry is offering food to anyone who needs it .

Jill Brickman, the township supervisor who oversees the Pantry, states the process works best when new clients complete a simple application online .

Physical distancing is in place at the Pantry so after you order online, drive to the Pantry and the food will be placed directly into the car .

If you are not able to place your order online, you may drive to the Food Pantry and call from the parking lot . Someone will assist you through the process . Although the process is simple it may take a little longer than ordering online .

If for whatever reason you are unable to drive to the food pantry, call and arrangements can be made to have food delivered to you .

Food Insecurity

What does it mean to be food insecure? According to Bob Tucker, who represents Hunger Free Northbrook, it means there is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active healthy life .

If you or someone you know needs help call 847-272-1700 or visit hungerfreenorthbrook .org for more information .
