JoAnn's Cozy Corner

Hi All! It has been so good for me to be here with all of you, though it is just a couple days a week. I enjoy talking with you on the phone and everyone who comes in to attend a class or sign up for a program. There have been some big changes in my life; my partial retirement (since I couldn't entirely leave all of you) and the loss of my husband. My family is getting older and wiser. I have 8 grandkids in college. The first to graduate moved to California to work for LinkedIn and the second one was just inducted into the Navy as an Ensign in what was a very moving ceremony. He will go to Maryland and when he completes his Masters Degree he will be working as a nuclear engineer with equipment on submarines. Thankfully there are still 5 more here, along with their families, to enjoy. And so life moves on. We need to make the best of each day and enjoy life and those around us.

Be sure to stop by the Center and meet with Tiffany, Senior Center Manager. Or, just stop by and say "Hi"

Dear Senior Center Members,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce to you my resignation as Supervisor of the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. I have truly enjoyed spending time with all of you, creating wonderful friendships I will never forget. The decision to leave the parks and recreation field was a difficult one to make, however it comes after finally giving in to my life-long dream of going to culinary school and becoming a pastry chef. Though this is the first step of what will be many, I hope to someday own my own bakery and coffee shop. I want to thank all of you for allowing me into your lives during our time together and teaching me lessons I never anticipated learning. You have treated me very well here at the Senior Center and I can only hope I was able to return the favor.

I wish you all happiness and I hope we will see each other in the future!

Sincerely,

Enjoy this Summertime Recipe!—Blueberry Tart

*flour for work surface

1 8oz sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

1 large egg, beaten

1 tablespoon sugar

4 oz cream cheese, softened

¼ cup heavy cream

½ teaspoon grated lemon zest

3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar

2 cups blueberries

1. Heat oven to 375 °F. On a lightly flowered surface, unfold the sheet of pastry and roll it into a 10x12 inch rectangle. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.

The Northbrook Park District Senior Center is partnering with Mayflower Tours to offer some wonderful experiences.

2. Using the tip of a knife, score a 1-inch border around the pastry without cutting all the way through. Brush the border with the egg and sprinkle with the granulated sugar. Bake until golden and puffed, 18-22 minutes.

3. Using the tip of a knife, RESCORE the border of the cooked pastry without cutting all the way through. Gently press down on the center of the pastry sheet to flatten it. Let cool to room temperature, 15-20 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, with an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the cream, lemon zest and 2 tablespoons of the confectioners’ sugar and beat until smooth. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly within the borders of the pastry.

5. Arrange the blueberries in a single layer over the filling and sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of confectioners’ sugar.

6. Enjoy!
