Current Events Group

Tuesdays from 1-2pm

Code: 17939

As the nation propels into another year to be filled, undoubtedly, with jaw-dropping headlines and an exciting election, the members of the Current Events drop-in group are never at a loss for news to discuss weekly. Long-standing member and often leader of weekly discussions, Miller Kalom describes the group as "an opportunity to get together out of the house to talk about anything we feel like". He also noted, "You really get out of it what you put in. Don't be afraid to come in and voice your opinion. We have great conversations and while we may not always agree with each other on a specific topic, that is what really enhances the experience. We welcome new members to the group, both men and women!". If you are interested in joining this exciting group, stop by the Library on Tuesdays.

Evelyn's Corner

During my first few months as the new Supervisor, I have had the pleasure to meet and speak with many of you, as well as experience things I have never done before! Between having Tea at the Drake Hotel, enjoying Beautiful at the Oriental Theatre and calling Bingo here at the Leisure Center, I feel very lucky to be able to share these opportunities with all of you. It is clear to see why everyone speaks so highly of the center members, programs and instructors. I also think the Park District has an amazing group of staff who love what they do and is evident by their work.

In order to provide more of the exciting programs you would like to see, I will be holding a Coffee Talk with Evelyn on Friday, April 1 from 1-2pm here at the Senior Center. Feel free to stop by for an open discussion regarding some of your favorite programs as well as any new ideas you would like to share. All suggestions are welcome. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

We are Family!

We like to think of the Northbrook Senior Center as a second home, and its members an extended family. To celebrate our great collection of members, we invite you to contribute to the new "We Are Family" bulletin board located within the Leisure Center.

Here we will display your accomplishments, family news, vacation photos, funny anecdotes, etc. Drop off your labeled contributions at the Senior Center Office. The submissions will be reviewed and posted if approved. Contributions will be returned if labeled with your name. Questions? Contact the Senior Center Office at 847·291·2988.

Volunteer Opportunities

We invite you to volunteer at the Senior Center and help set up and decorate our rooms for events and luncheons. Volunteering is fun and rewarding, and we appreciate your help. If you’re interested, stop by the office or call Evelyn at 847·291·2988.

A Poem for Canasta Players: Canasta is great, but here I must note, There are just a few things that get my goat! You ponder and ponder and find it quite hard To remember what's out and throw a "safe" card. You pick and pick and it's plain to see, You'll never go down without a clean three. You lose a round and make your excuses, You would have made it if you picked more deuces. You're set for pairs and what do you do?

You pick the next card and alas, it's a two!

You pick a large pack and just watch their faces, They know you'll get stuck with sevens and aces.

You think you play fast and everyones slow, Til you hear them shout "It's your turn to go!". They're down with 180, sakes alive!

You can't even get down with one twenty five!

You have 6 1/2 pairs, that shouldn't be hard, But the other team makes it as you're picking your card! Your partner stares and you realize with a groan, When you went down, you forgot your talon!

You count up the points and tally the score, You would have won the game with only 5 points more! The game of canasta could be a dream, Except for these things that make you scream!

When you luck is bad, you say you don't care. You're giving it up to play Solitaire!!

As for me, I feel quite the same, But I won't give it up...because...

I LOVE THIS GAME!!

Each puzzle consists of a 9x9 grid containing given clues in various places. The object is to fill all empty squares so that the numbers 1 to 9 appear exactly once in each row, column and 3 x 3 box.
