Senior Center Newsletter March-April 2020

Inside This Issue

Best Wishes, JoAnn

It’s hard to believe, but after 33 fun-filled years with the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, JoAnn Nelson is retiring! JoAnn started her career at the District in 1987 as a part-time office worker, later sharing the position of Senior Center Director with Sandy Volpe. Under JoAnn’s leadership, the Center grew from about 475 people to more than 1,200 members!

JoAnn retired from full-time work in 2009 but remained with the District part-time. Her proudest achievement is being part of the Senior Center’s move from Village Green to its current location.

“Watching seniors find friendship and fulfillment at the Senior Center has brought me great joy,” she said.

JoAnn plans to oversee the remodeling of her home so she can continue to host fabulous parties with her family and friends. JoAnn invites you all to her house this summer—but bring your bathing suit and a towel! We expect her to be a regular face here, playing bunco every other week, calling bingo on occasion and always being the life of the party!

Senior Center Updates

Our first National Puzzle Day Competition on January 29 was a hit! Fourteen participants enjoyed lunch together before breaking into teams of two and working on identical puzzles. Mary Dougal and her daughter, Emily, (pictured) won first place. Cindy Vander Kuur and Priscilla Maves came in second only 15 minutes later. There were many laughs and ideas on how to improve the event for next year.

See An American In Paris at Drury Lane on March 25 (3 ½ star review!) and join us for the St. Patrick's Day Party on March 17 featuring lively entertainment by Patti Ecker. We have so many options to keep you entertained.

Clear Captions is a Federal Provider that offers free services and products to people so they can stay connected to their friends and family. Don’t forget about the other services offered monthly: AARP Courses and Dr. Berman's foot care.

On April 3, Barbara Rinella will be at beautiful Sunset Ridge for an exquisite lunch and dramatization of The Queen’s Fortune. See the premier performance of this season’s novel! On April 21, Getting Ready for Orioles and Hummingbirds will be the topic at Lunch and Learn. We’ll create nesting balls to help welcome our colorful feathered friends.

Senior Week takes place May 11-15 and features many free activities. This is a great time to invite your friends to see what we are all about. The Spring Luncheon includes a delicious lunch, Vegasstyle entertainment by Vito Zatto and a special celebration of our volunteers.

We hope to see you often and soon!
