Member Tips

During a recent Coffee Chat, Marga Levy shared a great tip! Along with keeping a picture of our COVID-19 vaccine card on our phone we should photograph ALL of the important info in our wallets and make sure to store the info in a safe place. In case we lose our wallets, this will simplify the process of contacting companies and organizations to put a stop on credit cards and obtain replacements.

The Lending Closet

The Council meets bi-monthly with occasional committee meetings. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Senior Advisory Council member please contact Laura Wassinger for more information. Currently your Senior Advisory Council members are: Lenore Bernstein, Mady Fern, Julie Goforth, Rob Long, JoAnn Nelson, Larry Schaffel (not pictured), Cindy Vander Kuur, and Marge Varley. This fine group of friendly people represents the Senior Center members with great sincerity and care.

Congrats

Lenore Bernstein won a Senior Center Membership for matching the most masked faces with their owners in the January-February 2021 Momentum contest. Thanks to you all for participating.

The Northbrook Park District lends medical equipment to Northbrook residents and members for up to three months. I Can’t Hear You!

One thing has become apparent to us all— it’s harder to hear and understand people when everyone is wearing masks. For those with age-related hearing loss this is exacerbated because they cannot follow the speakers’ lips and facial movements which often provide context during conversation. Sadly, some have decided not to attend the inperson activities because they are frustrated. The important message to share is that untreated hearing loss can eventually lead to physical and social ramifications. The following information has been gathered to assist you in being proactive about your hearing health.

Hearing Loss Facts

• Hearing loss is more common than diabetes, cancer or vision issues.

• Hearing loss contributes to atrophy in the brain, leading to dementia. Mild hearing loss doubled the risk, moderate loss tripled the risk and those with severe loss had five times the risk.

• Hearing loss is linked with walking problems.

As you walk your ears pick up subtle cues that help with balance. Not hearing these makes your brain work harder, interfering with the mental processing needed to walk safely.

Oh My Aching….. Series!

Village Green Center

Too many seniors assume having aches and pains is just a part of normal aging. Dahlia Fahmy, owner of Sports + Ortho, will explain why that is not necessarily true! Join this informative presentation followed by a complimentary individual assessment.

Speaker: Dahlia Fahmy, PT, MBA, Fellowship

Trained, Dry Needling Certified

• Hearing loss contributes to a loss of enjoyment of social activity due to having to repeat oneself, background noise interference and feelings of exclusion.

• Hearing loss is strongly associated with depression, which can lead to reduced participation in activities.

Hearing Aid Myths that Hold People Back:

“My hearing’s not that bad.” Hearing aid users wait, on average, 10 years before getting help.

“Wearing hearing aids means I’m old.” Staying connected with others can help your brain stay younger and keep you actively involved with life.

“I don’t like the way hearing aids look.” Today’s hearing aids are streamlined and virtually invisible!

“Hearing aids are hard to use.” There is a breaking in period as you adjust and a trial period usually is included to make sure your selection works for you.

“Hearing aids cost too much.” It’s true they are not cheap but if you factor in the substantial effects of hearing loss on the quality of your life, it is money well spent!

Contact Laura Wassinger for assistance finding support groups or information on hearing aids.

The Scoop for Seniors

Vaccines for Homebound Seniors!

The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) is working to integrate home health care vaccination services to reach home-bound individuals who are unable to go to the CCDPH's COVID-19 vaccination sites. To qualify, you must be 65 or older or have a disability or use adaptive equiment (like a ventilator, crutches, a walker or wheelchair) AND be unable to leave your home because it is too difficult AND live in suburban Cook County. Sign up by calling CCDPH's hotline at 833-308-1988 (weekdays from 7am-10pm and Saturdays from 8am-10pm).

Avoiding Scams

Learn how to protect yourself!

• Legitimate COVID-19 tracers need only health information, not money or financial information.

• Don’t respond to texts, emails or calls about checks from the government.

• Ignore offers for vaccinations and miracle cures.

• Hang up on robocalls (computerized voices). Scammers are using illegal robocalls to pitch everything from low-priced health insurance to work-at-home schemes.

• Watch out for emails or texts with links.

• Go to websites directly instead of clicking links from sources you don’t know.

• Do your homework when it comes to donations to make sure they are legitimate.
