Spotlight on Members

women took their talent to a larger stage, when they sang the National Anthem at a Chicago Bears football game at Soldier Field. They were part of a group of 50 members of the Sing to Live Community Chorus to step up and sing, after the Bears Care Foundation donated $5,000 to the chorus. The chorus was formed in 2005 as a musical outlet and supportive community for singers whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.

“It was an amazing experience and honor to sing the National Anthem,” Mady said. “I will always remember this day. It was touching to sing in front of all those people.”

The Joy of Singing

Singing is second nature to Mady Fern and Jane McCarty, members of the Park Larks choir at the Northbrook Senior Center and the Sing to Live® Community Chorus.

Jane has been part of musical groups her whole life, including church and school choirs. “I love the feeling of family we share with one another and the support we are able to give each other,” she said. Mady said she has enjoyed the friendships she made and the chance to sing magnificent music over the years.

The two women share more than 40 years in theatre and choirs, and they just shared a oncein-a-lifetime experience. On October 4, these two

Join Us for Musical Delights

For more than 30 years, the Park Larks have brought together men and women from varied backgrounds to share their love of singing. They practice at the Senior Center on Thursday mornings, under the direction of former concert pianist Evelyn Binz. Some of the choir members are former musicians or taught music, and all of them enjoy performing and bringing joy through music. The Park Larks perform show tunes at senior centers, retirement homes and health centers. Their next performance is on December 10 at Mather Place in Wilmette, and they have bookings into April of 2016. New members are welcome to join the group at any time. For more information, call 847·291·2988.

The Northbrook Community Choir will present three holiday concerts, under the direction of Ben Gray.

Do you have a story to share? Contact our office.

Thank you for your patience as we adjust to staffing changes. As most of you know, Marissa Moravec has accepted a position with the Vernon Hills Park District as Membership Services Supervisor. We wish her well.

As the weather changes, remember to drive safely, park in the marked spots at the Leisure Center, and avoid blocking walkways or fire lanes. We will notify participants about program cancellations or building closings. In addition, you can call our office at 847·291·2998, and our voicemail will be updated if the building is closed.

We have great programs planned for you this fall and winter. Look for details in this newsletter, and register early to avoid disappointment. If too many people wait until the last minute to sign up, we may have to cancel programs. Registration must be received at least seven days before a class begins. If we cancel a class, we’ll notify everyone who registered and issue a refund.

Wishing you and your family a happy holiday season! Frank

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall colors. Thank you to everyone who participated in our early fall programs and trips. It may be hard to believe, but we’ve booked our winter trips and already are planning spring adventures!

Our plans include a tour of the Sprecher Brewery in Milwaukee, a casino trip and performances of West Side Story at the Paramount Theater and The King and I at the Lyric Opera. Let us know if you have suggestions for trips or other programs.

The Northbrook Park District Senior Center is a place to bring friends together and make new friends.

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.”

Thankful during this holiday season!
