The Northbrook Park District Senior Center is pleased to offer a preventive health event: a series of five non-invasive and painless health screenings, conducted by Life Line Screening. The screenings can detect the following potential health problems:

• Blocked arteries (a leading cause of stroke)

• Abdominal aortic aneurysms (which can lead to a ruptured aorta)

• Hardening of the arteries in the legs (a predictor of heart disease)

• Arterial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat, which is tied to stroke risk

• Osteoporosis for men and women

All five screenings take about 1-1 ½ hours. To register, call 888·653·6441.

Join us for a day of driving services with the Secretary of State’s mobile unit. Rules of the Road: 10am-Noon. License renewal and vision screening: 10am-2pm. AARP Driver Safety Course

September 12 & 13, October 10 & 11, November 14 & 15 from 9am-1pm

Sharpen your driving skills with a two-day class geared towards drivers age 50 and older.

Review rules of the road and safe vehicle operation, and learn about normal, age-related physical changes. Preregistration is required, with checks payable to AARP. Call the Senior Center to reserve a spot.

Mahjong Tournament

Join the Northbrook Park District Senior Center and Weinberg Community for Senior Living for the annual Mahjong Tournament! This social tournament offers prizes, lunch and snacks. Slow Cooker Beef Stew

2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 clove garlic, minced

1 bay leaf

Prep Time: 20 min.

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 onion, chopped

1 1/2 cups beef broth

3 potatoes, diced

4 carrots, sliced

1 stalk celery, chopped

Cooking Time: 12 hours

1. Place meat in slow cooker. In a small bowl mix together the flour, salt, and pepper; pour over meat, and stir to coat meat with flour mixture. Stir in the garlic, bay leaf, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, onion, beef broth, potatoes, carrots, and celery.

2. Cover, and cook on Low setting for 10 to 12 hours, or on High setting for 4-6 hours.
