Senior Center Newsletter September-October 2021

Senior Center Members,

As you have probably heard, Recreation Supervisor Laura Wassinger has accepted a new position in another community. We all miss her! While I work to secure her replacement, please contact me or any of our Customer Service staff at 847-291-2995 with questions you may have. We are always here to help you!

We hope you enjoyed the Mini Momentum mailed out in July. With ever changing guidance, facility use plans and program changes we were unable to send additional information until now. Please note the new COVID-19 mask mandate. I hope that you enjoy the September/October issue and I look forward to seeing you as our fall programs begin!

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, increased mask wearing initiatives and mandates along with the delta variant, the District has made the decision to keep programs at their current locations. It is important to us that our Senior community feels comfortable in the environment we provide for programs. One way to accomplish this is to keep Senior programs at the Village Green Center. In the meantime, you can find the last letter from Laura on page 2. I spoke with her just the other day—she misses you all dearly!

Thank you,

Hello Senior Center Members,

What a whirlwind of activity has taken place the last few months! Having you return to the Senior Center has been such a happy experience, especially when vaccinated members were able to remove their face coverings. It was good to see your smiling faces. We sure went through a lot together this past year and we still face changes ahead!

The Welcome Back Picnic turned out to be a big hit! The food, entertainment, and most of all, the camaraderie made for such a pleasurable afternoon. The Food Pantry Drive-by Drop-off was very successful, even in the pouring rain. The Senior Advisory Council members who volunteered that day made the event positively cheerful with the group singing along to the playlist of Hamilton. The IPRA Senior Games took place in July, and Northbrook Senior Center participants John Kaminsky and Linda Maratea received gold medals in the Bocce tournament! They both participate in the Bocce Drop-in each Wednesday, from 10am-

I’m excited to tell you but sad to say I have taken a position in a community where I will create a Senior Center from scratch based on a grant that the community of Woodstock received. It’s an opportunity I wouldn’t be ready to accept if I hadn’t learned so much from you. Thank you for letting me into your lives;

IPRA Senior Games - Bocce Tournament at PinstripesNorthbrook Senior Center Members Take First Place!

The Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) Six County Senior Games took place from July 6-28 this year. Athletes participate annually in competitions which take place all over the suburbs. For the first time in nearly 15 years, bocce was offered as an option. The tournament took place at the Pinstripes in Northbrook and was facilitated by none other than Ron Bernardi and bocce professional Nick Panarese. Their expertise provided for a smooth operation and put everyone at ease for a fun, good-natured afternoon. One thing we all agreed upon was that it is not necessary to be a bocce fanatic to participate, even casual players can compete and hopefully next year we’ll have a greater turnout. Congratulations to Linda Maratea and John Kaminski, whose team won first place medals!

Remembering Sue Schmittroth

The Art Studio group fondly remembers art instructor Sue Schmittroth, who is gone too soon. She taught drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelrymaking and most recently wool felting and acrylic pour painting. A love of nature inspired so much of her beautiful work. She loved to garden which inspired her to work with the Northbrook Community Gardens and oversee the donation of fresh produce to the Northfield Food Pantry. Her curious mind, limitless creativity, skillful talent and generous spirit bettered the lives of the fellow artists she brought together to delight in new experiences.

A Story of Guilt and an Unlikely Friendship

Friday, October 8 from 2-3:30pm

Viewing Party at Village Green Center

Join German Historian Anette Isaacs as she discusses how her native country has attempted to cope with the guilt of causing the Holocaust and how this painful but necessary process heralded a new era in German-Israeli relations. In the spring of 1965 Germany and Israel reluctantly entered into diplomatic relations. What at first glance seems to be a rather unlikely relationship, especially in light of the shared history, has evolved over time into a blossoming friendship and successful economic bond. In order for this to happen Germany had to face its Nazi legacy and subsequent collective guilt.

Q1. I am a member of the senior center. Does my senior center membership include use of TPAC?

No. TPAC membership is separate from the Senior Center membership. Members of the Senior Center need to be a TPAC member or pay a daily fee to attend group fitness classes, open gyms or use the fitness floor or track at TPAC.

Q2. Will group fitness classes be returning to the Leisure Center?

All Northbrook Park District group fitness classes will be held at TPAC for the foreseeable future.

Q3. Do I need a membership to attend group fitness classes at TPAC?

There are two options. The first is to have a full membership which gives free access to regular group fitness classes, use of the track, participation in all open gyms and use of the fitness floor. The other option is to pay the daily fee. Daily admission includes group fitness classes, use of the track, use of the fitness floor, and open gym participation on that day. Q4. I used to have a swipe card for the fitness classes at Leisure Center, can I buy one for TPAC? Swipe cards are not available for group fitness classes at TPAC. Throughout the year there may be an occasional special that offers the use of a card, but it will not be a regular option. Swipe cards are available for open gyms.

Q5. There are no classes exclusively for seniors at the new facility. Why?

TPAC group fitness classes are open to all members. The weekly schedule includes over 25 classes per week ranging from yoga to cycling to cardio and strength. Some group fitness classes are designed to be low impact and suitable for active agers which would be perfect for a senior participant. All instructors in all classes will show options for all fitness levels. For advice on which classes are most appropriate for your interests and abilities, contact Rachel Tandy at 847-897-6161.
