Spotlight on Staff

Quyen Dang—Zumba Gold Instructor

Quyen (pronounced Quinn) is a fitness teacher, dentist and survivor. Her story began in Vietnam, where she was born. Her parents had a successful Chinese herbal medicine business and a large family; she has 10 brothers and sisters. “In 1976 and ’77, Communism posed a serious threat to business owners and the wealthy,” she explained. “The government would come in to businesses and take assets. Currency would be changed frequently to keep the wealthy from hiding money.” Once the currency was changed, the money that families had saved or hidden was worthless.

much, they could have rolled overboard, and no one would have known.

We were lost at sea for nine days before we stumbled upon some fishermen, who contacted the Malaysian Coast Guard. One elderly man passed away on the third day of our ordeal in the South China Sea. The rest of us ended up on the shores of Malaysia, where the Red Cross was setting up a camp. We had to line up once a week for food and water. We slept on wooden planks. We made it home.”

The family stayed there for nine months, until a church in Wisconsin decided to sponsor them, and they lived in Wisconsin for seven years. After Quyen’s father learned about Chicago’s Chinatown, he set up a Chinese herbal business there and ran it for about 20 years, until retiring.

"Throughout my life, I try to remember often how blessed my family has been to have all that we have today. More importantly, we have each other. It was by the grace of God that we all made it safely to our new homeland. I can't imagine what was going through my parents' minds—not knowing what the future would hold for their children's lives.”

In 1978, Quyen’s parents decided to leave Vietnam and began building a boat. The government found out about the boat and confiscated it (but did not know who owned it). Quyen’s parents then bought tickets for a boat trip out of the country, paying with gold, a universal currency.

In the middle of the night, the entire family walked through fields to get to the boat, which carried 300 people. “The highest level was basically the roof top, where my dad and some of the fishermen would sleep at their own risk. If the boat rocked too

Growing up in America, Quyen said she acquired a love of music, dancing and animals, especially dogs. Guided by her parents into a health care profession, she became a dentist.

“After 20 years into my profession, I have learned that work, fitness and having fun have to be in balance. I am very thankful to have discovered Zumba Fitness. It has been a key part of helping me lose 30 pounds over 18 months. Zumba allows your body to have interval training, which is one of the best forms of cardio exercise. If you haven't tried Zumba yet, come on in, let loose, and just have fun!”

A Moment with Marissa

The Senior Center is closed September 7, 14 and 23.

Thank you for your patience this summer as we adjusted times of programs to accommodate summer camps. We are fortunate to be part of a Park District that has so many wonderful offerings, and finding space to hold our programs is a good problem to have.

Be sure to read through this whole newsletter to familiarize yourself with new offerings and events coming up, including Super Senior Day and the Mahjong Tournament. The annual Holiday Bazaar will be Saturday, November 7, this is a great opportunity to shop for gifts for the holidays.

Other great events, such as the Thanksgiving Luncheon and Holiday Party, are right around the corner.

Our Lending Closet has become very popular. If you have items in good condition, such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, and commodes that you don't need, you can donate them to the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. These items can assist our neighbors who are recovering from surgeries, injuries or illness.

Thanks!

Catch Up with Kristina

Hello everyone; I hope you enjoyed your summer. Fall is almost here, and we have some wonderful bus trips coming up.

(See page 2 for details.)

We’re also looking forward to great trips planned for the winter and spring. They include Bye Bye Birdie at Drury Lane, a Tour of Sprecher Brewery in Milwaukee, West Side Story at Paramount Theatre, The King and I at the Lyric Opera, and a Casino Trip.

Our January trip to Beautiful – the Carole King Musical is full, and we started a wait list. We will contact people on the list in case of cancellations.

We’d like to clarify our refund policy for bus trips: we are not always able

to offer refunds. They are handled on an individual basis, depending on circumstances, such as whether we purchased tickets and whether we are able to fill a spot if someone cancels.

We hope you will join us for our trips and programs. The Northbrook Park District Senior Center is a place to bring friends together and make new friends.

“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.”

Hope to see you on a trip soon!
