2022 Winter Activities

Message from Executive Director Molly Hamer Hello Northbrook Resident, Crisp autumn weather is giving way to the blustery days of winter as another year comes to an end. As individuals, as a community and as a country, we lived through the circumstances of COVID-19 and came together to move toward a more normal way of life. It is our hope that you found laughter through our programs, beauty in our parks, friendships during our events, and fitness at our activity center. We have worked diligently to provide programs and facilities to fill your leisure time. It has been an exciting year with the completion of the 2018–2022 New Places to Play campaign. With a responsibility to deliver outstanding recreational services to our residents, the campaign was developed in response to community input calling for indoor recreational spaces, improved golf courses and year-round amenities. With the opening of the Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) and the reopening of the new Heritage Oaks Golf Club and Acorn Grill + Terrace, Northbrook residents truly had new places to play in 2021. Planning continues as the staff and Commissioners work together to update our Moving Forward Comprehensive Master Plan. An executive summary as well as the complete document will be posted at nbparks.org upon its completion early next year. I invite you to visit TPAC to walk on the indoor track, play pickleball or basketball in the gym, exercise in class or work out on the fitness floor. Come to Acorn Grill + Terrace to savor a cup of coffee, a delicious meal, or a glass of wine overlooking the splendid views of Heritage Oaks Golf Club. Golfers have enjoyed the course improvements since the reopening, while the simulator room offers indoor golf and games by reservation. This Guide shares details of our upcoming winter events such as Lunch with Santa, New Year’s Eve Mini Bash, the new Winter Leisureland event! We are also thrilled to bring you information about our Summer Camps. Register your children to take advantage of the many incredible assets that your Park District has to offer through our quality programs. “Every Summer has a Story” and we encourage you to imagine the fabulous summer adventures for kids of all ages in our parks and facilities. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and hard-working staff, I wish you all the best as we look forward to an eventful 2022 at the Northbrook Park District. Be sure to play every day!

Molly Hamer, Executive Director

1.0 This player is just starting to play tennis. 1.5 Has limited experience and is still working primarily on getting the ball into play.

TENNIS

ADULT TENNIS LEVELS

2.0 Needs on-court experience. Has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles play. 2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although court coverage is weak. Can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability. 3.0 Fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution when trying for directional control, depth or power. Most common doubles formation is one-up and one-back. 3.5 Has achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety. Starting to exhibit more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles. 4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. 4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.

Directed by: Erin Sweet Choreographed by: Drew Kambach An eclectic group of six preteens vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. Camps, workshops, before/after school care, golf course green fees, adult sports leagues, daily admissions, passes/punch cards, tickets to entertainment, special events and trips may have nonrefundable deposits and/or special restrictions. Refunds do not apply to program supplies/materials purchased, gift certificates, food and contractual programs. Program Cancellations When people wait until the last minute to register, classes may be canceled, so register early to avoid disappointment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, those who signed up will be issued a full refund. Residency All Village of Northbrook residents are not residents of the Northbrook Park District. Non-residents are charged a slightly higher fee for programs. If you have questions about residency, call the main Registration Office at 847-291-2993. Health Conditions Participants should notify the Park District at the time of registration about any medical condition that might require special attention by District staff. Information will remain confidential. Code of Conduct Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times in programs and facilities. That includes respect for all people, equipment and facilities and cooperative, positive participation. The staff will review rules with participants and may dismiss anyone whose behavior endangers safety or negatively affects a program or facility.

Are You Covered? The Park District does not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants; the cost would make program fees prohibitive. Review your personal health insurance plan to be sure you and your family have proper coverage. The absence of coverage does not make the Park District automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses. In addition, certain high risk activities require a waiver/release form, which must be signed before the first class. Scholarship Requests Because we believe every Park District resident should have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs, we will attempt to provide financial assistance to residents faced with financial hardships. Youth Services assists the District with the administration of our scholarship program. Children under the age of 19 who meet the criteria can receive up to $250 per year to participate in recreation programs. We will consider exceptions for families facing extreme financial hardship. Families only need to qualify once per year and application forms are available at the Leisure Center, Sports Center and Village Green Center. If you have questions about the scholarship process, contact Wendy Friedman, Leisure Center Office Supervisor, at 847-291-2995. Inclusion We encourage participation by everyone and provide reasonable accommodations in accordance with ADA standards. If you require program assistance for special needs, check the box on the Registration Form to be contacted by the District’s NSSRA Inclusion Liaison. Questions? Call 847-291-2995. ADA Compliance The Northbrook Park District provides recreation opportunities for all residents and encourages participation by everyone. Programs and services are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination. We are happy to make reasonable modifications to assist anyone with special needs who wants to participate in a program. Please contact the District in advance of a program to discuss any necessary accommodation or if you need Park District materials in a special format, such as Braille, large print or audio cassette. The Park District provides a grievance process for resolution of any ADA complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of a disability. If you have any concerns about Park District ADA compliance, contact Eileen Loftus, Director of Recreation, c/o Northbrook Park District, 545 Academy Drive, Northbrook, Illinois, 60062, phone 847-291-2960 or email eloftus@nbparks.org. The Park District is reviewing its programs and practices in regard to ADA requirements and invites comments from the public.

Commitment to Quality We want you to be happy with your recreation choices! If you’re not satisfied with a program or instructor, you may ask to repeat the class, transfer to another class or receive a refund. The Park District will try to resolve instructor and/or program issues to your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, the full or prorated refund will be approved. Requests can be made at any Registration Office or by calling 847-291-2993. Withdrawal & Transfer Requests We understand that circumstances arise that may lead to a patron’s inability to participate in a class/ program. Unless otherwise noted, a request for a transfer or refund can be made if: • The request is submitted three business days prior to the start of a program. • The instructor and participant agree the participant’s skill level is not appropriate. • The class is canceled or rescheduled and participant cannot attend at the new time. • The patron cannot participate due to illness or injury (doctor’s note may be required). Refunds All refunds are subject to an administrative fee of 10% of the program cost.
