Campus Catch Up Dates for Your Diary

Fri 7 Oct - HE Awards Ceremony Mon 24 - Fri 28 Oct - FE Half Term/HE Reading Week

Hello and Welcome

Hello and welcome to all new students starting at Northbrook. The Noodle is the student magazine that will keep you in the know about what’s going on in and around the campuses and the Worthing area. This is your magazine and we would love to hear from you about what you want to see in future. Email: thenoodle@nbcol.ac.uk with your ideas.

Northbrook Student Radio

Northbook Student Radio is run by a group of students who maintain and manage all of its affairs – for example programming, technology, events, publicity and community. In order to keep the station running into the autumn, we need more of you to get involved with the management committee and help us out with just a few tasks. It’s not a huge commitment of your time and you’ll definitely learn a lot from the experience. This is in no way limited to music students or the 14-19 Centre, Broadwater campus - everyone is invited to get involved! To find out more, please send us an email at: opportunities@nsr.fm

Campus Catch Up Simon Says Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager On behalf of everyone at Northbrook College and in particular the Health and Safety Team, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the College. For some this is the start of a new and hopefully exciting chapter in your academic journey and for others, a happy return. As a College we work very hard to adhere to all health and safety legislation and to ensure that we all take an active role in promoting a safe working environment for the whole College community and we ask that you all do your bit to support us. Whilst we try to ensure that our College environment is as safe as possible, there are things that you can do to make all of our lives a lot easier. An example of this is wearing your student badge at all times - this helps us to ensure that we know who

is on the College sites and assists us in the security of the College, should we have any emergency. For those of you who smoke, please show consideration for non-smokers and smoke only in the dedicated areas. This will have a two-fold effect. Firstly, it will help reduce the hazards that can be associated with smoking, such as fire and secondly, we will not have to ask you to move, which will help maintain the harmony of the College. If you spot anything that you feel may adversely affect safety or security, please report it immediately. Remember this is our College - our community - and it is up to all of us to take an active role in its running. Simon Aston

Equality & Diversity Forum The Student Equality & Diversity Forum met on several occasions last year and a small and committed group has helped raise the profile of a number of important issues, including: • • • •

Participation in decision-making which resulted in the placement of additional electronic door openers Establishment of the Quiet Room at The University Centre Adoption of the ‘student friendly’ disability statement Attendance on the College’s Equality & Diversity Committee, chaired by the Principal

The Student Equality & Diversity Forum will meet again in early December and there is an open invitation to all students to attend. Further information on dates and location will be available soon. If you have any queries about the Group then please contact Shantheni Powell on 01903 606113 or email SC.Powell@nbcol.ac.uk

Campus Catch Up Welcome to Blackboard! Blackboard is an internet hosted system that supports all students studying at Northbrook College. The Blackboard icon should be on all College computers and by now you should all be enrolled on to your course and support areas. Your username is your student number and initially so is your password, but this should be changed to something more secure on your first log-in. When you log-in to Blackboard you will find links to many aspects of your studies, such as course materials and assignments as well as useful College information and a range of resources to support your studies. Your tutor will inform you of what information they have posted on Blackboard and how to make best use of it. Please log-in regularly to check the announcements and notifications from your tutors and supporting staff throughout the College.

Become a Student Rep As a new or returning student, you will soon get the chance to volunteer to be a Student Rep for your class. Student Reps are responsible for communicating students’ views to the College and to Course Leaders. As a Student Rep, you will have the opportunity to represent your course and influence decisions made in the running of the College. Student Reps listen to their classmates’ views and attend termly meetings, to help ensure that their course, department and College are run effectively. You will influence

the future direction and quality of your course or subject, as well as the educational experience of future students. Not only will you be benefitting other students, it’s also great to put on your CV, as it will be looked upon favourably by universities and employers. There’s fun to be had as a Student Rep too - you’ll meet students from other departments and courses and last year a group of Student Reps went on a free trip to Thorpe Park. A great day was had by all! For more information about being a

Student Rep, contact Tallulah Morris, the Learner Voice Co-ordinator on 01903 606214 or email: t.morris@nbcol.ac.uk

Student Success Student Wins Award At Graduate Fashion Week Northbrook College has won an award at Graduate Fashion Week for the second year running. BA Fashion Design student, Dominique Kral, was awarded the Zandra Rhodes Textiles award at the Gala event in London. Dominique’s win follows that of fellow student Rhea Fields, who won the Best Womenswear award last year. Dominique was one of a group of 12 Northbrook students who showed their degree collections on the London catwalk, where the audience included representatives from industry, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Asos and River Island, as well as national press. Northbrook’s Fashion Design Course Leader, Simon Seivewright, said, “I was so pleased for Dominique to have even been nominated and, after Rhea Fields’ win last year, I did not want to count anything certain this year. But when they called her name at the celebrity gala awards show last night it was an amazing feeling to think that we had a winner again”.

Festival Fever for Music Students Past and present Northbrook students played to 400 people over the two weekends of the Arundel Festival. Acts included Mollie West, Gramsci and the Gent, Phat Bones, Demelza’s Tea Party, Pony Friends, Jimmy Stuart, Amy Hill, Black Bonds, The Crown, Time Brings Age, A Minor Htch, The Hicksville Band, Flip Flays, Vythons and Zoe Brownrigg. The event was managed by Northbrook Music Business students and Music staff. Mike Pailthorpe, Music Technology Lecturer, said, “It went amazingly well – there was some excellent Northbrook talent playing on a big stage to 400 happy people in sunny weather. A very successful event.”
