The event, managed entirely by the students, raised over £900 for St Barnabas House Hospice. Guests enjoyed an evening of horse racing, quizzes, a cake auction and sale, along with a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses. Barbara Stuart, BTEC Hospitality Course Leader, said, “The event was a resounding success.”

Northbrook Student Radio
Looking towards the end of this term, we need to consider the future of Northbrook Student Radio after the summer break. Northbook Student Radio is run by a group of students who maintain and manage all of its affairs – for example programming, technology, events, publicity and community. In order to keep the station running into the autumn, we need more of you to get involved with the management committee and help us out with just a few tasks. It’s not a huge commitment of your time and you’ll definitely learn a lot from the experience. This is in no way limited to music students or the 14-19 Centre, Broadwater campus - everyone is invited to get involved! To find out more, please send us an email at: opportunities@nsr.fm Michael Bowerman

Campus Catch Up Student Rep Meetings 1. What you said... The Blackbox is not fully soundproofed. What we did... Work to soundproof the Blackbox is now being scoped by a specialist acoustic company. 2. What you said... Improvements should be made to the bar at The University Centre, West Durrington campus. What we did... Work on the bar is now being planned for Summer 2011.
The College Committee of Students met for the final time this year on all three campuses and Reps from across the College came along to represent their peers. Through the meetings this year, student views and suggestions have been listened to. With many students raising issues regarding the College refectory and shops, we arranged for Student Reps to meet with Chartwells, the company that provide the catering at the College, on a number of occasions. Lynne Brown, the Refectory Manager and Jeremy Bennett, the Regional Manager, attended several of the meetings and have responded to the issues that the Student Reps have raised.
Any Reps or other students interested in finding out more, can go to the ‘Rep’ page of the student website on: www.northbrookstudents.info
Land Speed Record Car Comes to Northbrook The Bloodhound SSC project to design a land speed record-breaking car came to the College last month. School children and members of the public came along to see a full scale replica of the Bloodhound car at Northbrook College’s Shoreham Airport Campus. The Bloodhound SSC project aims to create the ultimate Land Speed Record car, building on the success of Thrust2 and ThrustSSC, with a new target of 1000 mph.
Students Transform Patio Garden The LLDD Towards Independence gardening group has been busy transforming the patio garden outside Brooks coffee shop. They planted spring bulbs, grasses, sweet peas and summer bedding plants. Much to the chefs’ delight, they also made a herb garden to provide a regular supply of herbs for the kitchen.

Campus Catch Up Simon Says Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager Bugs Are All Around Simple ways to minimize E.coli infection are to: • Buy fresh vegetables from a reliable source where possible • Always wash your hands before preparing food • Thoroughly wash raw fruits and vegetables before eating them • If in doubt, soak vegetables such as lettuce and apples in distilled white vinegar for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Wash with clean tap water • Sanitize cutting boards, utensils and kitchen surfaces with a good kitchen spray • Avoid cross-contamination between cooked and uncooked food • Cook meat well to destroy any bacteria • Use only safe water • Refrigerate leftovers immediately
E. coli – Once again it is in the headlines, following the outbreak in Germany which has had tragic consequences (I am sorry to say it makes good press). But what exactly is E. coli, apart from a very good excuse to give up fruit and veg? E. coli is found everywhere in our environment and even inside our bodies. It is generally harmless to humans when it’s in the gut - it actually helps with digestion and gives us much-needed vitamins. These bacteria help us to digest food and perform other essential tasks without bacteria in our bodies, we wouldn’t live very long. However some types of E. coli can cause serious illness or even death. Foods can become contaminated with E. coli if proper food safety measures are not followed.
The general motto would be - if in doubt - wash it!!!!!
Have Your Say!

Campus Catch Up World Book Day Northbrook staff and students shared their love of books during the week of the recent World Book Day. A thriving book exchange raised over £50 for St Barnabas Hospice and saw a staggering turnaround of books. Budding writers also set to work on a communal story entitled ‘The Northbrook Story’, which was created, sentence by sentence, by students passing the display. Many students also created their own individual stories in the library, by writing and pasting images into blank books.

Student Success Rhea is in Good Company A former Northbrook Fashion student has been featured in Company magazine. Rhea Fields, who won last year’s award for ‘Best Womenswear’ at Graduate Fashion Week, is interviewed alongside other award winners. She talks about her influences and describes how she was snapped up by fashion house Karen Millen to work as Accessories Assistant following her Graduate Fashion Week success. Rhea is now a Design Assistant at River Island and hopes to one day head up design for a high street brand.
Theatre Students’ Interactive Piece at Festival Northbrook Acting Degree students have received great reviews for their interactive theatre piece, Navigation, at the Brighton Fringe Festival. Audience members were asked to arrive at Brighton station from where they had to navigate their way to a secret destination. Giving up control and following orders were concepts at the heart of the piece. A review on the ‘Fringe Guru’ website said, “It was among the most immersive and cleverly-constructed pieces I’ve ever seen at the Fringe. The ensemble of students from Northbrook College took effortlessly to their roles playing friends, gangsters and even my own conscience.”
‘Show Me the Monet’ An ex-Northbrook student has been featured in a ten part TV series on BBC2. ‘Show Me The Monet’ sees a panel of renowned art experts searching for great art from both amateurs and professionals for a prestigious exhibition. Lucy Ambrose, who gained a BA in Fine Art at Northbrook, is one of the hopefuls to face a panel of art critics for feedback on her work.
www.northbrookstudents.info
Lucy was one of only 150 short-listed entrants from 1200 submissions, to talk about their work in front of the panel of judges. Lucy received a ‘yes’ from all three judges and gained a place in the exhibition at the Royal College of Art.
