Campus Catch Up Dates for Your Diary

6-9 Dec - Student Rep Meetings 15 Jan - UCAS application deadline for University Level courses

Graduation 2010 Congratulations to all our university level students, who graduated recently at a ceremony at Worthing Assembly Hall. A total of 541 students graduated from Northbrook’s university level courses this year - a number which has been rising steadily over the last ten years. After the ceremony, students and their guests were treated to a glass of bucks fizz in the foyer before spilling out into the sunshine to take pictures of each other tossing their caps into the air.

Freshers’ Fair This year’s Freshers’ Fair was another great success with stalls, exhibits, freebies and entertainment, as well as great food.

Design Your Future 2010 Northbrook College attended the recent UCAS exhibition ‘Design Your Future 2010’ at the ExCel, London. Over 8,000 sixth form students came along to find out more about degree courses in 'creative' subject areas and associated career avenues. The event was designed to help students to decide what to study within art and design and gave the chance to attend workshops about the journey to higher

education. Many thanks to the Northbrook students who came along to see us we hope you enjoyed the event!

Campus Catch Up Simon Says Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager With the recent conviction of George Michael I have to stop and think what sort of role models some of our celebrities are setting. If nothing else, it goes to show that no matter who you are, it is now considered socially unacceptable to drive under the influence. We held ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive Campaign’ talks recently and I hope you had chance to see them. It certainly made me think. I wish you and your family a safe and healthy Christmas and New Year!

Once again it’s that time of year, with the festive season approaching, when we will all be bombarded with campaigns about drink driving. We will not be able to pick up a newspaper, magazine or turn on the TV without being warned about the dangers and consequences of excessive alcohol use. It is at times like this that I wonder how many of us actually pay attention to what we are being fed, or whether it just provides a chance to go and make a cup of tea.

Northbrook’s ‘Big Weekends’ Music Business and Production students have once again played a key role in the success of Arundel Festival’s ‘Big Weekends’. Students ran the sound system for both weekends, learning some useful health and safety techniques due to heavy rain. Music Lecturer, Mike Pailthorpe, said, “Northbrook had great visibility for the whole weekend. The Big Weekends provide an excellent work opportunity for our students.”

Student Success Aero and Auto Students Rise to the Challenge Two teams of Aeronautical and Automotive students have won a top ten place in the 2010 Army Engineering Challenge Day. Competing against colleges from across the South of England, both teams showed a fine competitive spirit, especially during the Paintball Close Quarter Battle test. One of the teams achieved the fastest time of the day when recovering a Land Rover from a lake.

Other challenges included rewiring a ‘bomb damaged’ control tower and getting ‘explosives’ across a ravine as quickly and as carefully as possible.

Fine Art Graduates Win Exhibition Place The work of three Northbrook graduates has been displayed at the National Open Art Competition 2010 Exhibition. The trio’s submissions were selected from 1600 entries and were shown alongside the work of other finalists at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester. The graduates were all enrolled on Northbrook’s BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting course. Further details of the exhibition can be found at: http://www.thenationalopenartcompetition.com/index.php

Northbrook Creates for the Royal Opera House Theatre students have created installations for an event at the Royal Opera House in London. Highlights of Northbrook’s work included the pre-performance Crush Room which was transformed into a ghost ballroom and the Supper Rooms which became mirrored rooms with a tree canopy entwining around furniture and up to the roof. The Northbrook Theatre was delighted to be involved with the award winning Deloitte Ignite event.

Formula 4 Success for Northbrook After only two races out of twenty, Northbrook College has finished in the top half of the 740mc Formula 4 championship table!

Congratulations to all Motorsport students involved in the Mallory Park Formula 4 championship race in October. The students maintained the car, carried out the data analysis and oversaw the event for driver, Shane Kelly.
