Momma Cherri Comes to Northbrook Celebrity chef Momma Cherri thrilled Northbrook students with a visit to the College’s Hospitality and Catering department this week. Momma Cherri rose to fame on TV when her Brighton ‘Soul Food Shack’ was featured on Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’. She gave a colourful and lively presentation, with pictures, films and music, during which she spoke about her recipes as well as offering the students business advice on setting up a restaurant. Momma Cherri finished by passing round some of her homemade Cajun spice mix and advising the students: “Follow your dreams!”.
NOTICE TO ALL STUDENTS When you're travelling between the train station and the College, please remember to be respectful of other people and their property.
Amberre Prepares to Take the Plunge! An Access student is planning a skydive in August to raise funds for the Institute of Cancer Research. Amberre Le Grove, who is currently studying on the Access to Social Science course, was spurred to take on the challenge after several family members were affected by cancer. Amberre said, “I chose to do a skydive as the thought of it makes me very nervous. I wanted to do something that would be a major life accomplishment and which would not be easy. I believe it has to be a challenge and involve hard work in order for it to suitably honour those who have fallen and those battling to find a cure for us all.” If you would like to find out further information or donate online go to: http://www.justgiving.com/Amberre-Le-Grove.

Campus Catch Up Rep Meetings What You Said... Some items in the shop at West Durrington Campus are too expensive.
What We Did... Chartwells, the company who provide the catering at Northbrook, were invited along to the College Committee Meeting at West Durrington where Student Reps were able to disscuss their concerns with the Regional Manager and Refectory Manager. Chartwells has agreed to look into introducing 'meal deals' to provide cheaper options for students, as well as promotional weeks/days where certain items, such as fruit, would be sold at promotional prices. They have agreed to come along to next term's meeting with price tariffs, so that there can be further discussion and consultation with students on this issue. For more information, take a look at the notes from the meeting (coming soon on the Student Website).
Dates for Next Rep Meeting West Durrington - Tues 24th May, 12.30-1.30pm, Arundel Restaurant Shoreham – Wed 25th May, 12.30-1.30pm, A5 Broadwater – Thurs 26th May, 12:00-1.30pm, R14
Fashion Students Visit the Big Apple BA Fashion and Textiles students have just returned from a six day trip to New York City. The group stayed in a Times Square hotel and visited several art and design museums, including the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They also saw the Empire State building and enjoyed a walk through the snow in Central Park. Simon Seivewright, Course Leader, said, “Taking the students to one of the fashion capitals of the world like New York is an incredibly important part of their global fashion awareness and an enriching cultural activity. In many cases it’s the first time students have had the chance to travel across the Atlantic and to experience the excitement of New York, a city so famous, it feels like you’re in a giant movie set!”

Student Work Selected for St Barnabas Art & Design Lecturer Maggie Tredwell and one of her students, Andrew Griffiths, have had their paintings selected for the new St Barnabas Hospice. Their artwork will hang with nine other pieces on loan from members of the West Sussex Art Society. Maggie toured the Hospice with other members of the Society just before it opened and said, “We were shown round by Steven Stratford, who works at St Barnabas as the artist in residence. The building is beautifully designed; the internal spaces really connect with the natural landscape of the gardens and courtyards outside. Steven explained how important art can be in enhancing the experience of visitors, patients and staff. Their aim, at the Hospice, is to create an environment that is in harmony with the holistic care provided.” Maggie is Lead Art Lecturer in Adult and Community Learning and Andrew, who has completed the Northbrook Portfolio Programme in Art & Design, is currently attending an Adult and Community Learning Painting and Drawing course.

Campus Catch Up Simon Says Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager When I was first asked to write a column in The Noodle, my immediate thought was one of excitement (note to self - get out more!), followed by those of fear, dread and panic. What on earth could a Health & Safety Manager of a college write about, which students would find vaguely interesting? In desperation, I turned to my daughters, both of whom can be classed as students. After I managed to coax them away from their iPods and distract their attention just long enough from Lady Gaga to ask them their advice, they came up with the usual reply: “What?”! Being a typical parent, I needed no further prompting. I immediately climbed onto my soapbox and lectured them on the effects of loud noise upon their ears. My daughters’ theory in relation to music (which I fancy is just about the norm, judging from my excursions around the College) is: why have it loud when you can have it really loud and share your dubious taste in music with everyone in a radius of 100 metres?!
The reality is that almost half of young people experience hearing problems after being exposed to loud music. Now I have no doubt that you, like everyone else, have heard this before BUT before you go and turn up your music or flick to some other interesting article in the magazine, consider this: We as humans are ‘Hunter Gatherers’ and because of this, we need all our senses to be as finely tuned as possible. Wearing headphones immediately takes away our awareness of the world around us. There have been a number of serious or fatal accidents in our local area where people have been listening to music on their iPods and missed hearing either vehicles or trains approaching, with disastrous consequences. Are we, in the College, exempt from this? Unless you are related to The Terminator, at a guess, I would say no! All I ask is please think before you plug in and stay alert, Northbrook needs you to be a lert!
Technology Celebrations The Technology department held their annual celebration event in the Arundel Restaurant at West Durrington. Prizes were awarded for Aero, Auto, Engineering and Construction.

Campus Catch Up Students Install the Unexpected in Gallery Fine Art degree students will be displaying their work in ‘Interventions’, an exhibition of site specific work. The work is the result of a year-long project in which students and their tutors met at Pallant House to discuss ideas for making daring and unexpected art works that could be situated anywhere in Pallant House except where you might expect to see them, on the walls of the gallery.
From the surreal humour of Maureen Hagger’s giant softsculpture clubs made from men’s ties, to the exquisitely detailed miniature photographs by Yasmin Raphael, the ‘Interventions’ exhibition will take you on a journey of discovery which will help you to see the building and its contents through fresh eyes. The exhibition runs at Pallant House from 2nd May to 5th June.
Super Vee Back in Action Motorsport students have helped to put a 1970s Supernova Formula Vee race car back on its wheels after an extensive rebuild. Super Vee, believed to be a factory development car, came to the Auto Department as a total restoration project. The car was raced in the USA, reportedly lapping the oval tracks at over 170 mph. On its return to the UK, It was until very recently, the fastest 1600cc race car at the Brighton Speed Trials and it is the College’s intention to take it back to the Brighton event. David Tucker, Course Leader FdEng Motorsport Engineering said, “This has been a long and drawn out process as undertaken by FdEng Motorsport Degree students, in conjunction with several subject experts from around the country. It is testament to our staff and students who have had to design and build most of the car from scratch. I would like to personally thank them for their efforts.”
LLDD Spring Fair Success LLDD students held a Spring Fair to raise funds at the Angelik Club on Worthing Pier. The fair was opened by Deputy Mayor Cllr Ann Barlow and featured stalls, games and prizes, as well as a tombola, lucky dip and penalty shoot-out. Over £300 was raised and will be donated to Ferring Country Centre, the charity that provides training and work experience for people with learning difficulties.
