PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board makes recommendations to the City Council concerning policy matters related to the establishment, maintenance and operation of the City’s parks and recreation programs. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm at City Hall, located at 550 Landa Street.

PARKS FOUNDATION

Established in 2005, the New Braunfels Parks Foundation exists to promote, protect and enhance the parks system of the City of New Braunfels through education, resource development and community partnerships. Some of the exciting projects the NBPF has funded include construction of JAWS Skate Park and Puppy Playland, and the Landa Park Mini Golf renovation. In-person registrations are available at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, Landa Recreation Center, Das Rec and Fischer Park NEC. Checks should be made payable to "City of New Braunfels."

Das Rec classes and programs listed as free are free for members. Non-members must purchase a day pass to participate in a free class.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

NB PARD continually strives to provide quality programs and offers a Satisfaction Guarantee. If the participant is not satisfied with a class or program, the participant may either repeat the program at no cost, or receive a 100% refund or account credit, at the discretion of the participant.

PROGRAM & EVENT POLICIES

CANCELLATIONS

Help us have successful programs by registering early! All programs must have a minimum number of participants in order to be conducted. If a program does not meet this minimum, the class may be cancelled. Cancellations by customers made five business days prior to the start of a program will receive a refund. No cancellation refunds will be given after the start of a program or event. Registration fees will not be prorated for partial attendance.

The New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department routinely takes photos and videos of participants in recreation activities, programs and special events and/or at recreation facilities. These photos and/or videos may be used for promotional purposes. Be aware that by participating, you are granting the City of New Braunfels the right to use and publish your image or your minor child’s image.

If registering for a class that is full, your name can be placed on a waiting list. This does not guarantee a spot, but individuals will be contacted if an opening becomes available.

The picnic pavilions provide the ideal setting for a family gathering or company picnic, while all of the natural areas offer a retreat from a busy and hectic world. Enjoy a softball or baseball game on one of the athletic fields or teach a child to fish at one of the fishing ponds. The family-friendly event encourages residents to get out, get active and explore the West End through a car-free street.

LANDA PARK TOUR & HIKE

Explore the history and beauty of Landa Park and experience a two mile walk during this interpretative tour. Discover man-made and natural treasures and hear stories about the people that made Landa Park a significant part of our community. Tour meets in the parking lot of the Rec Center at 164 Landa Park Drive. Most of the tour will be on the sidewalk and is stroller friendly.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: A COMMUNITY LUNCH AND LEARN SERIES

These “Bite-sized” learning opportunities are provided free to allow local businesses and organizations an opportunity to present educational, health-focused information for Das Rec members and guests. These take place on the 3rd Friday of each month. See our Facebook Page for complete schedule. Please feel free to bring your lunch.

DOGGIE DIP DAY

One of the few times a year the pool belongs to the pups! Bring your water-loving pooch to play and cool off in the Springfed pool. Pre-purchased tickets are available, or you may purchase at the door. Human guest must have a ticket, max of 2 doggos admitted per ticket. Don’t forget your doggo’s proof of current rabies vaccine (within 3 years) for the day of the event. Owners are required to clean up after and always maintain visual sight of their pups.

FISCHER CHALK THE WALK

Head out to Fischer Park to create art with sidewalk chalk. Stop by the Nature Education Center Gift Shop during regular business hours to sign-in; the first 100 participants will receive free chalk. Spread out to decorate one of our many sidewalks. Participants are welcome to bring in their own non-permanent preferred chalk art supplies. Take a picture of your artwork and tag us at #nbparksandrec.

FAMILY NERF GUN WAR

PIXIE PARK PICNIC

Spring is the perfect time to plant a garden, watch the wildlife, and if you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a little fairy friends too! Join us at the Landa Park Dance Slab for games, a special craft, and a meet and greet with some of your favorite pixies. Picnic lunch provided. Bring your favorite yard blanket or lawn chairs.

HISTORIC CEMETERY TOUR

Join us for a guided, interactive walking tour through two historic New Braunfels’ cemeteries that includes an exercise in using dowsing rods to find unmarked graves from 1846! Hear the stories of our founders along with their struggles and triumphs in building a new life for themselves and their descendants. This tour meets at Comal Cemetery on Peace Avenue and then moves to New Braunfels Cemetery. Call 830-221-4370 to register.

Couples can spend the evening cruising throughout Landa Lake on a paddle boat for a special evening. Couples will be given a Bluetooth speaker to play the music of their choice and a boxed dinner will be provided for a night out. Pre-registration is required.

FLASHLIGHT EGG HUNT

An illuminating experience, hunt eggs by flashlight! Are you up for the challenge? If so, come on down for some fun, treats, and even a photo opportunity with a special guest! Each hunter should bring their own flashlight and basket. Children will be divided into age groups. Pre-registration only, no on-site registration.

Hop on over to the Das Rec Leisure pool for our annual Underwater Egg Hunt. Children will hunt for eggs, then receive a goodie bag. A small craft will also be available. Nutmeg Vant is a legendary movie star that was shipwrecked a few years ago and stranded on a deserted tropical island with six strangers. Immediately after her news-breaking rescue, her butler, Theodore Winsington, III, contacted Blissity Lovewell and requested that she host a smashing shindig in honor of her safe return at Nutmeg's fabulous Hollywood mansion. Get your '60s vogue ready because you've received your smashing '60s invitation, baby! This is where your story begins...

Join us for an interactive evening of mystery- this is not a show, registered attendees will be playing a role. Dinner will be provided. Guests will be assigned characters one week before the event so that you may dress the part. Please be sure to provide an accurate e-mail when you sign up.

Rodeo Rodeo Dog Dog

Bring your favorite dog on a leash for a paw-some time. Test your dog’s agility with canine capers, contests, and races. There will also be a costume contest, dog crafts, and more. All friendly dogs welcome, just be sure to bring proof of current rabies vaccination.

Put your creativity and construction skills to the test by building a cardboard vessel to launch through the City Tube Chute on the Comal River! There are two levels of competition: Novice and Expert. Novice teams will compete for creativity awards, while Expert teams are competing for speed. Teams must pre-register to compete in this hilarious and educational event. Space is limited so register early, registration will open on February 1st. All vessels will have one run through the chute.

From hiking in Panther Canyon to crawfishing in Landa Lake, Little Landa Explorers will get an inside look at all the fun things to do and discover in Landa Park and ways to protect its natural beauty. Pre-registration is required.

ALL STAR SPORTS CAMP

This camp will introduce participants to four different sports including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and futsal (indoor soccer). Our instructors will guide athletes through fundamental movements and skills of each sport. Drills will emphasize technique, teamwork and skill development while having fun.

About Camp Minnehaha

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAM

Teens- experience all the great things about day camp AND have an opportunity to develop job and leadership skills. CITs assist counselors with implementing and planning camp activities. CIT applications will be available April 1 and require at least one letter of recommendation for new CITs. Once accepted into the program, CITs must attend an orientation prior to the start of camp. Spots are limited and are available on a week-by-week basis following the Camp Minnehaha schedule.

DEPOSIT POLICY FOR CAMPS: Instead of full payment, a deposit may be made at the time of enrollment to secure a spot in individual weeks of Camp Minnehaha or Fischer Park Nature Camp by paying $25 per child, per week of camp that they would like to register for. This deposit payment will reserve a camper’s spot in the program until full payment is due.

The remaining balance for camp tuition is due 14 days before the camper's first day of camp for each registered week. Failure to submit the remaining payment, 14 days before registered start date, may result in the forfeiture of that week’s deposit and the loss of the reserved spot at camp.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR CAMPS: Full refunds will only be given if notice is received five (5) or more days prior to the start of the registered week of camp. No refund can be given once camp has begun. Registration costs cannot be prorated for partial attendance.

Two divisions to choose from in this 6-week round robin ladder league. League games will be self-officiated with a Championship game to determine the winner of the league. Partners are not required to sign up for this league. The format of play is designed so that players play mostly with others of similar skill levels. Placement or court assignment will be based upon your rank on the ladder. Players will move within the ladder based upon their overall score.

Grab your partner and get ready for the Winter Teams 6-week Pickleball Ladder League! League teams must be coed/mixed (one male/one female), open to all skill levels and match-play ready. This fun round robin format of play is designed so that teams mostly play with others of similar skill level. Sign-ups for Division 1 (3.5-4.0) to Division 2 (3.5 and below). A playoff tournament will finish up the league and determine the winning ladder teams on February 9. Max 16 team spots for each division. Season begins on January 5th.

Angie holds a degree in dance education and is certified as a Texas Dance Educator. She also holds her personal training certification from AFAA. Angie specializes in flexibility and endurance, cardio and group conditioning, senior and children’s fitness, and injury prevention. When Angie isn’t training or dancing she enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, reading, and traveling.

TINA OLCOTT, NASM-CPT

Tina is energetic with an outgoing personality that is passionate about fitness. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Science Education and is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer. Tina’s passion and knowledge of fitness comes from the many hours of training she has done to prepare for triathlons, obstacle course races, and long-distance cycling and running. Her goal as a trainer is to motivate her clients and build a fitness program that meets their specific health and wellness goals. She enjoys researching and exploring new creative ways to make working out enjoyable while also accomplishing your goals. Originally hailing from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL, Lisa has spent her entire life being active in some form or fashion. She started gymnastics at a young age and played travel soccer, dabbling in dance, softball and basketball. Movement and fitness keep her positive and motivated and she enjoys helping others achieve their goals and live an active and healthy lifestyle. When she’s not working, you can find her practicing aerial silks and trapeze, reading, crafting or relaxing. SWIM LESSONS LEVELS

Level Description

PARENT AND CHILD Ages: 6 - 24 month

PRESCHOOL Ages: 3-5

Familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Parents must be in the water with the student.

Familiarize children to the aquatic environment and help them acquire basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.

LEVEL 1

Introduction to Aquatic Skills Ages: 6-12

Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. Skills to be learned: bobs, blowing bubbles, glides and recovery, basics of freestyle.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

Learn the skills to help you teach others to swim and be safe in and around the water! If you are at least 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

Pre-requisites: you must complete the seven-hour online component at least 48 hours before the class begins. A valid email address must be provided to receive your certification from the American Red Cross.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Entry-level Lifeguard participants will gain the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Certification includes Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid. A valid email address must be provided to receive your certification from the American Red Cross.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills Ages: 6-12

Stroke Development Ages: 6-12

Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Skills to be learned: combined arm and leg action on front, various floating techniques, increased distance swim.

Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Skills to be learned: survival float, treading water, elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick, streamline position.

MASTERS SWIM TEAM

Want to get back into the swim of things? Masters Swim is for the adult swimmer looking to have a coached workout and improve swim techniques. This program is led by Master's certified coaches. For your convenience, the Das Rec Masters Swim team is setup with monthly installment billing using a debit/credit card authorization. The monthly payment will be drafted on the 1st of each month.

LEVEL 4 & 5

Stroke Improvement and Refinement Ages: 6-12

Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (i.e., front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke). Skills to be learned: open turns, butterfly, breaststroke, increased time treading water, increased distance swim. PRIVATE

Receive one-on-one attention to enhance swim skills. Private swim lessons are ideal for anyone who wants a more customized experience for children and teens. ADULT PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

The Landa Park Dolphins, organized by River City Athletics, is a competitive summer swim program for swimmers of all ages who want to better their competitive swim strokes, make new friends, and stay in shape during the summer. Summer practices are held Tuesday-Friday, with morning and evening times available. Swim meets will take place on various Saturdays throughout the summer. BE A MOBILE FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEER

The Westside Community Center plays an active role in the Food Bank’s monthly food distribution program—but we need your help to keep it a success! Volunteers are needed the third Thursday of each month from 8-11am to assist with packaging food items for food insecure families and individuals.
