RIGHT AT THE ART OF THE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

HOLIDAY REVIEW Simon Kench visits Holland

eadly sins, nightmares and scenes of hell may not be an ideal introduction to Flemish art. But the charming town of ’s-Hertogenbosch – locally known as Den Bosch – is the centre of a new attraction that celebrates the art of their famous inhabitant, and one of the most iconic figures of the Flemish art world. Those of you not familiar with art or artists may not know the name of Hieronymus Bosch. When I told my son he would be accompanying me to this prestigious exhibition of art, he questioned why I would want to visit an exhibition of dishwashers and kitchen appliances. However, even a hard to please 14-year-old was soon captivated by the intricate painting showing Heaven and Hell, and pretty much everything else in between. The town of Den Bosch has given itself over to commemorating 500 years since the death of Bosch. At the world-renowned Noorbrabants museum, they’ve managed to bring together paintings and drawings from all over the world. There’s weird and wonderful scenes of fantastic creatures, heavenly landscapes and fiery vistas from hell and damnation – it’s truly a sight to behold. The paintings aren’t huge, but it is worth spending a few minutes at each one to see the intricate detail. Known as the most influential artist of the late Middle Ages, the paintings of Bosch mix reality with his own fantasy, to create a mind-blowing mix of serenity and nightmares Throughout the town – much like Hull with the Larkin toads trail – bi d d f l bj t

bizarre and wonderful objects pop up in the most unexpected of places. Shops, restaurants and bars are all enthusiastic participants of the tourist trail, with warm welcomes and friendly chatter from the residents. Pre-booking is essential for the artworks in the Noordbrabants Museum, and tickets cost 22 euros for adults and only 2 euros for under-18s. I would advise going as early as possible in the day, as the halls can get crowded after lunchtime. There is also an audio tour, but all the texts and descriptions are in English in a free caption book. Reaching Den Bosch is simple. Fast trains leave Amsterdam Central Station twice an hour, and take under an hour. A free minibus transfer awaits at the station, taking a meandering tour of the bustling, pretty streets to the museum. After an immersion in art, it was time to head back to Amsterdam for a coach transfer to Rotterdam and then on to our P&O ferry back to Hull. We had an hour to spare, so we stopped at Schipol Airport and followed the signs up to the splendid viewing deck – complete with static KLM aircraft – to watch the incessant take-off and landings at close quarters, and also to enjoy a taste of Holland by participating in a coffee and a traditional Stroopwaffel, a toffee-filled biscuit waffle. Back aboard the Pride of Rotterdam and time for a fabulous dinner in the Brasserie. It nicely finished off our arty trip to Holland, and with a modern, comfortable cabin there weren’t any Bosch-inspired nightmares – only sound sleep and sweet dreams.
