Existing Light Conditions vs. Horizontal Discontinuity
Site: Barcelona, Spain Program: Urban Park
The goal of the design is to form a topographically continuous sports park in junction with a transparent screen which creates a stimulated space. Through an extensive series of sun and continuity studies, our aim was to connect and restore the open space of a city block in the 22@ District. The public sports park receives optimal sunlight during the winter and summer seasons, allowing for activity throughout all parts of the year. In order to analyze the qualities of light within the existing site, we studied the sun patterns during the summer solstice and winter solstice. To resolve the issue of discontinuity between the light and available surfaces for program, we chose to intervene in an area including three spaces with ideal sun exposure.

These three spaces, with the addition of a fourth at the back, were used as areas for the badminton courts. It provides a connection to the upper fitness areas and the below-grade pool and spa.

Knoxville is the third largest city in Tennessee with about 180,000 residents in the city proper and more than 655,000 residents in its metropolitan area. This publication shows the urban design implications of the highway and the car culture and the unforeseen negative effects they had on the city of Knoxville. It are these negative consequences our studio seeked to reverse and mend through a new, comprehensive transit and urban design plan for the city.

The conclusions drawn from our research can be organized into five principles. 1) Public Transit Single occupancy vehicles should not be the major form of transportation within the city. 2) Convenience The design of the city should discourage single occupancy vehicle use and encourage alternative forms of transportation. 3) Density The density of Knoxville should be increased, keeping in mind that density implies a range of meanings.

4) Environment Environmental concerns should be addressed with every design decision, with the overall goal of sustainability. 5) Culture Re-connection implies cultural changes and improved social relationships.

[ KNOX BREW ]
An urban brewery for Knoxville redevelopment The University of Tennessee Design Integrations Studio Professors: sanderspace.com Fall 2013 Site: Knoxville, Tennessee Program: Craft Brewery Square Footage: 40,000 ft2 Craft Brewing has eluded Knoxville since the movement started. My proposal in the old city of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee calls for an urban brewery that will bring Knoxville into the vibrant industry. The site was once a hub of industrial activity in the growing city. However, with new times this part of Knoxville has become neglected and serves as a barrier for future growth and development to the north of the city. The crux of the design is rooted in creating views to and from the city which will bring people in but also make the craft brewery a place that is an iconic landmark in the surrounding area. The overall strategy of the design was to create a public band along the streets with a manufacturing component to the northwest of the site. There are a number of adjacencies between public and manufacturing components that make the brewery an interesting and exciting place to be.

[ SUTTREE’S HIGH GRAVITY TAVERN ]
Steam bent wood bench installation designed to enhance the spatial quality of a downtown bar while providing additional seating The University of Tennessee May 2013 Partners: Ali Alsaleh (Arch) Jake Heaton (Arch) Kyle Jenkins (Arch) Jared Wilkins (Arch) Gregory Spaw (Faculty) Site: Knoxville, Tennessee Program: Furniture Installation Footprint: 94 ft2 Linear Footage: 50 ft. Construction Cost: $4,000 The project began as an academic endeavor associated with an option seminar to respond to a hypothetical problem proposed by Suttree’s High Gravity Tavern in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. The issues to be addressed dealt with excessive noise, spatial design, and adequate seating for its patrons. Using themes taken from the acclaimed book Suttree by Cormac McCarthy, upon which the bar was named, the team formulated a design that responded to the problems while still maintaining a design language in keeping with the bar. Through precedent studies of fabrication techniques related to steam bent wood, it was decided to design a bench that would both maximize seating, enhance spatial quality, and suppress noise levels. A full scale mock-up of a larger installation was built to address the plausibility of the design and was presented to the owner. This hypothetical project led to an eventual commissioned design to build a 50 foot steam bent wood installation that resolves the aforementioned issues and augments the existing seating.
