[4] To put the pieces back together and connect the community of Haiti, a boarding school for elementary and middle school girls will be built. This school will be the connecting element that will bring hope back to the country. The design is a nexus, or a means of connection. The main focus was to use a nexus to connect the public and private, teachers to students, as well as spaces to spaces by means of a structural nexus. The nexus becomes the wall, the path, the ceiling, and support while maintaining one continuous nature. The nexus gives back to the public by creating moments of pause provided by the path which takes them from one side of the block to the other where they can experience the life that has been given to the school, community, and country.

[ Spatial Stimulation ] City Block Public Park Barcelona, Spain Professor Toni Montes Spring 2011

The goal of the design is to form a topographically continuous sports park in junction with a transparent screen which creates a stimulated space. Through an extensive series of sun and continuity studies, our aim was to connect and restore the open space of the block in the 22@ District. The public sports park receives optimal sunlight during the winter and summer seasons, allowing for activity throughout all parts of the year.

[3]

In order to analyze the qualities of light within the existing site, we studied the sun patterns during the summer solstice and winter solstice. To resolve the issue of discontinuity between the light and available surfaces for program, we chose to intervene in an area including three spaces with ideal sun exposure. Three spaces with optimal sun exposure were connected to the center of the open space through a series of ramps, varying between 5%-8% grade. These three spaces, with the addition of a fourth at the back, were used as areas for the badminton courts. It provides as a connection to the upper fitness areas and the below-grade pool and spa.

[4]

[5]

The screen acts as a connection between the verticality of the urban context to the lower public sports park in the center of the block. It is mostly composed of transparent and semi-transparent materials that allow for the maximum amount of sunlight to pass through and reach the lower levels.

KNOX BREW Urban Craft Brewery Knoxville, Tennessee Professors J. Sanders + B. Pace Fall 2013

[3] Craft Brewing has eluded Knoxville since the movement started. My proposal in the old city of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee calls for an urban brewery that will bring Knoxville into the vibrant industry. The site was once a hub of industrial activity in the growing city. However, with new times this part of Knoxville has become neglected and serves as a barrier for future growth and development to the north of the city. The crux of the design is rooted in creating views to and from the city which will bring people in but also make the craft brewery a place that is an iconic landmark in the surrounding area. The overall strategy of the design was to create a public band along the streets with a manufacturing component to the northwest of the site. There are a number of adjacencies between public and manufacturing components that make the brewery an interesting and exciting place to be.
