Wheelchair Distribution Continues
Before I returned to Zambia; Livingstone Rotarians working with physiotherapists from Response Network/Norwegian Home Rehabilitation distributed wheelchairs in the bush village of Simuumwe in Southern Provence some 60 km from a tarred highway, to joyful recipients recently. A young girl was able to get around now in her own wheelchair. The man pictured was now able to get off the ground and sell his wares in an upright positron. The group picture is of numerous different sized clients and their specially sized wheelchair. The Newport-Irvine Rotary Club is the International Major partner with 20 other Clubs and Districts world-wide participating. The wheelchairs are actually assembled in Zambia and it is hoped new Matching Grant projects will be able to build the sorely needed (WHO projects a shortage of at least 3 million wheelchairs a year worldwide) in all of Africa it is hoped that the factory will be able to make specialized wheelchairs for Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy patients that the typical wheelchair cannot serve.
