With 400 attendees, it raised $1,800 in a lively program with 13 performers. Speaker: Gavin Huntley-‐Fenner, Governing Board Member of IUSD, discussed the business of education and the strength of our local schools. Irvine Schools have faired much better than other districts through this down cycle but storm clouds loom with the CA Budget crisis. None the less, IUSD added jobs even as they trimmed the budget. He believes there is an obligation to educate the community. It adds value to the economy here in Irvine. Teacher quality surveys require objective measures that reflect what’s actually happening with IUSD teachers, not generic measures from across the state. Unconventional wisdom hires talented administrators/teachers and rewards them for taking risks. Hold them accountable but give them the ability to try new concepts. Principals as well. Decentralized management gives them the ability to make local decisions that are best for their schools. He is proud of the fact that Irvine fosters not just academic but social competence which is important in educating the next generation of teachers and leaders. Kerby
