STILE ANTICO Monteverdi: Missa In Illo Tempore Monteverdi’s tribute to the Renaissance For music lovers, the year 1610 is famous for the publication of the Monteverdi Vespers, a virtuosic, exuberant showpiece which will be performed in York on Friday 9 July. Less widely known is that the same publication contained another remarkable composition, entirely different in conception and outlook: the sumptuous ‘Missa in illo tempore’. In this exquisite work, Monteverdi pays affectionate homage to the style of his Renaissance forerunners. Chief among these was Palestrina, whose psalm-motets, programmed here between the movements of Monteverdi’s mass, are perfect examples of the simplicity and profound beauty which established him as the greatest composer of the Italian Renaissance (see event 3 for associated workshop). STILE ANTICO is an ensemble of young British singers, now established as one of the most original and exciting new voices in its field. Prizewinners at the 2005 Early Music Network International Young Artists’ Competition, the group is much in demand in concert, performing regularly throughout Europe and North America. www.stileantico.co.uk ‘The young singers of Stile Antico are magnificent - glorious music, gloriously sung’ Observer

DO YOU ENJOY SINGING? To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of Monteverdi’s famous 1610 Vespers, and Stile Antico’s performance of the ‘Missa in illo tempore’ in Beverley Minster, the National Centre for Early Music is organising a workshop designed to explore the psalm settings from this famous collection directed by Clive McClelland – Chorus Master of Leeds Baroque. The aim will be to intersperse the plainsong antiphons for 2nd Vespers on the ‘Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Queen’ (31 May) in order to create a quasiliturgical sequence. The movements to be studied are: Psalm 109 (110) Dixit Dominus; Psalm 112 (113) Laudate Pueri; Psalm 121 (122) Laetatus sum; Psalm 126 (127) Nisi Dominus and Psalm 147 (147 vv 12-20) Lauda Jerusalem. Singers will need to be good sight-readers or to have had some experience of singing this repertoire before. The afternoon will conclude with an informal performance in St Mary’s Church at 4:00pm to which all are welcome. Free of charge.
Evening S AV E R Buy a ticket for each of the three evening concerts and save 20%. Saver tickets cost £40.00 (concessions £38.00). This includes reserved seating for events 2 and 6.

BEVERLEY EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL SCHOOLS’ CHORUS directed by Sam Dunkley and Andrew Passmore
From Bologna to Britannia:Travels of the
Following the success of the inaugural Beverley Schools Chorus last year, students from East Riding Schools including Woldgate College, Longcroft and South Hunsley will perform works by Haydn and Mozart including Haydn’s delightful ‘Little Organ Mass’ alongside instrumentalists from the University of York and the National Centre for Early Music with soprano Bethany Seymour.
Early Viol Consort The instruments used for this concert were specially built, based on viols painted by Lorenzo Costa in Bologna in 1497. Costa worked for Isabella d’Este, a well known patroness of the arts, who delighted in sophisticated instrumental pieces by Franco-Flemish composers. The ‘Henry VIII Manuscript’ in London curiously contains several of the same pieces, alongside works by English composers. If the music travelled to Britain, might instruments similar to Costa’s viols have done so too? ‘the ensemble colours that emerge are pastel and translucent.’ The Gramophone www.roseconsort.co.uk

DUNEDIN CONSORT THE YORK WAITS PLAYERS Music of the Minstrels & John Butt director Beverley was historically the meeting place for musicians in the north of England, and the Minster contains one of the largest collections of instrumental carvings in Europe. The York Waits will breathe life into these famous medieval carvings by performing music from this period on many of the instruments depicted and, with the help of projected slides, discuss the sculptures and their significance. www.theyorkwaits.org.uk 'The Waits created a wonderful variety of sound textures' York Press This concert is designed to complement the newly created Beverley Medieval Guilds & Crafts Town Trail which can be joined at any of the stages, or sculptures, of which there are 40. These are located from York Road, and North Bar Without, through the main spine of the town to the Beverley Beckhead, at the south. Publications detailing the Trail, sites, sculptures and the history of the guilds and crafts are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Butcher Row.
