IN T ROD U CT ION

Welcome to this, our silver jubilee Festival! When we started in 1988 we had no idea that it would prove to be such an outstanding success and it is appropriate to say a few words of thanks! To Beverley Borough Council for having the foresight to initiate such an event – to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Arts Council for offering the financial stability which has allowed the Festival to develop and grow – to the National Centre for Early Music for taking on the administration when the ‘going got tough’ – and to you the audience for your loyalty and enthusiasm.

The 2012 Festival is designed as a celebration of music from the 15th – 18th centuries and includes a thoughtful exploration of Beverley’s own musical history presented in the Guildhall – one of the town’s finest Georgian gems – as well as performances by some of the UK’s early music stars including Stile Antico, the award-winning orchestral ensemble La Serenissima and the ever entertaining Red Priest. With associated workshops for younger musicians, we hope that there is something for everyone to enjoy in this celebration year. Delma Tomlin MBE Director

STILE ANTICO THE ROSE IN FLOWER: MASTERPIECES FROM THE TUDOR ERA William Byrd John Taverner William Byrd Robert White Christopher Tye William Byrd Walter Lambe William Byrd Thomas Tallis

Four-Part Mass: Kyrie and Gloria Ave Dei Patris Filia Four-Part Mass: Credo Exaudiat te Domine Quaesumus omnipotens Four-Part Mass: Sanctus and Benedictus Nesciens Mater Four-Part Mass: Agnus Dei Gaude Gloriosa

Take a step back to 16th century England - full of memorable characters, political intrigue and religious tumult, the Tudor era never loses its allure and fascination. Alongside their great matters of State, the Tudors oversaw an extraordinary flowering in poetry, painting, architecture and perhaps most of all - in music. Stile Antico's programme spans the entire range of this greatest period of English musical achievement. Each of the five Tudor reigns, from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, is represented by a large-scale antiphon - several dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the 'mystic rose'. Interspersed between these works are the movements of William Byrd's four-part mass: an affectionate tribute by the last great Tudor master to his illustrious heritage. “An ensemble of breathtaking freshness, vitality and balance” New York Times www.stileantico.co.uk

WILLIAM CARTER BACH AND THE LUTE William Carter, a founder member of the much admired Palladian Ensemble, appears on numerous recordings with period orchestras across the UK playing lute, theorbo and guitar. Today we have the pleasure of hearing him perform one of the most complex of musical genres, J S Bach’s music for lute – rarely heard – but as intensely beautiful as the more famous cello suites. “The compelling artistry of William Carter makes this often complex music sound disarmingly simple and natural, making each and every movement a unique and treasurable listening experience” Classic FM Magazine www.linnrecords.com/artist-williamcarter.aspx

VIVALDI:

MAESTRO DE’CONCERTI

We are delighted to continue our 25th anniversary party by welcoming back this award-winning orchestral ensemble as they present Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous concerti Le Quattro Stagioni played with staggering virtuosity by Adrian Chandler and his band. Contrast this explosion of sound with Vivaldi’s fantastic Paris concerto and three virtuosic concertos for soloist and orchestra, including the recently-discovered flute concerto Il Gran Mogol. This programme is a tour de force! “impeccable form” Early Music Review www.laserenissima.co.uk

FROM YORKSHIRE

A medieval banquet of musical delights linking together some of the most important musical genres of the 15th century - presented in one of England’s finest medieval Minsters, surrounded by myriad carvings of musicians who lived and worked in Beverley over 600 years ago. Grand Désir won the Friends’ prize at the 2009 York Early Music International Young Artists' Competition. www.granddesir.com

Join us in one of Beverley’s finest Georgian buildings for this specially devised programme which gives us a unique insight into the region’s musical history. Discover what it was like to hear a convivial song at a fashionable Assembly in Hull, the ballad of a beggarwench at Scarborough Fair, a drunken catch at a Beverley tavern, or a seaman's lament for his love on the shore – all newly discovered treasures from popular song-books of the 18th century. “Alva unveiled these catchy ballads - typical of what ordinary 18th-century folk would sing and play at home, in the taverns, on the streets, at the fair or racecourse – all brought vividly to life” The York Press
