Welcome to the 2014 Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival presented by the National Centre for Early Music with financial support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Arts Council England. We are delighted to host some of the world’s finest early music specialists in Beverley this year. Guests include the internationally acclaimed keyboard specialist Andreas Staier - joining us prior to a Wigmore Hall/BBC Radio 3 recording; soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, honoured for her voice of crystalline purity working with lutenist David Miller on a programme embracing Dowland, Purcell and Schubert; the wild, wacky and utterly brilliant vocal team that is Robert Hollingworth’s I Fagiolini
presenting their Venetian Carnival complete with masks and musical jokes and for the first time, Philip Cave’s choral group Magnificat - a group famous across the world for the brilliance of its recordings and fascination with 16th and 17th centuries.
We hope that you enjoy this musical feast and look forward to welcoming you. Thank you! Delma Tomlin MBE, Festival Director

Nine Daies Wonder With dance, songs and instrumental music, The Society explore an outrageous Elizabethan publicity stunt - Will Kemp's famous dance from London to Norwich in 1600. We think of the publicity stunt as peculiar to our age but the antics of Will Kemp, a shameless self-publicist and one of the leading actors in Shakespeare’s company, prove otherwise. In 1600 he danced his way from London to Norwich in nine days, entertaining an adoring public en route. The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments, with dancer, Steven Player, celebrate Will Kemp’s account of the journey, ‘Nine Daies Wonder’, with raucous dance tunes and more refined music of the Elizabethan age. They will breathe new life into this celebrated event, which remains awe-inspiring 400 years on, and still has the power to delight, baffle and amuse. “A Renaissance Fred Astaire... Steven Player was worth the price of admission by himself” Adelaide Review “One of our finest exponents of early music. They enchant and amaze in equal measure.” The Musician

Carnevale Veneziano From Monteverdi to Monty Python Venice at Carnival: the town doubled in size for weeks of misrule from St Stephen’s Day until Shrove Tuesday. The best musicians and commedia dell’arte groups were on first-name terms with princes, performing on the street but also in ticketed entertainments. I Fagiolini re-create an evening of such masques and musical mayhem: political caricatures; a trip down a canal via supposed Benedictine monk Adriano Banchieri; Gabrieli’s lament calling on the lagoon’s seafood to bewail the death of Willaert, and excerpts from Vecchi’s peerless madrigal comedy L’Amfiparnaso (Twin Peaks) introducing us to masked commedia characters Pantalone, the Dottore, the Spanish captain and more.

Twenty Waies upon the Bels ‘Rounds and Grounds’ Pellingmans' Saraband presents another bonanza of delightful 16th and 17th–century division music interspersed with lute songs composed on ground basses, and a colourful selection of rounds by Thomas Ravenscroft performed by special guest singers. This varied and vibrant programme also features music by Thomas Campion, John Johnson, and Nicholas Lanier. “This is division music at its most sublime, played with deceptive and consummate ease.” North East Early Music Forum “Faye Newton's pure, vibrato-light soprano suggests Emma Kirkby with rouged cheeks!” The Times www.pellingman.co.uk | www.fayenewton.com

Undoubtedly one of the most prominent harpsichord and fortepiano performers in the world, Andreas Staier’s indisputable musical mastery has made its mark on the interpretation of baroque, classical and romantic repertoire. As a soloist, Andreas Staier has performed across the world and he regularly collaborates with artists such as Anne Sofie von Otter, Pedro Memelsdorff and tenor Christoph Prégardien. His extensive discography is testament to his fame and we are delighted to be able to welcome this master musician to the 2014 festival. “Staier surely comes close to an ideal synthesis of historical awareness and charisma … superb … “ International Record Review – March 2013

Magnificat directed by Philip Cave
Amy Haworth, Emma Walshe sopranos Sally Dunkley, Caroline Trevor altos Simon Wall, Benedict Hymas tenors William Dawes, Giles Underwood basses
The Tudors at Prayer Henry VIII, Mary, and Elizabeth I dominated the political, social and religious life of England during the 16th century. They all valued music deeply, and it formed an important part of their daily lives, both public and private; each monarch had a profound impact on the form and function of sacred music. Magnificat performs a programme of some of the most ineffable and sublime music of the age, offering music that may have accompanied their Highnesses' more introspective moments. “Magnificat’s cast list is about as good as it gets …” BBC Music Magazine “The sound these singers make is exquisite..” The Sunday Times www.linnrecords.com/artist-magnificat
