Ashigs

Friday 13 November | 7.30pm

Begum Parveen Sultana The NCEM is delighted to welcome back the undisputed Queen of Hindustani Music, Begum Parveen Sultana, also dubbed the ‘Poetess of Music’ and ‘the Ultimate Soprano’ by the international press.

The art of the ashigs is an ancient bardic tradition that belongs mostly to the old Turkic World (Central Asia, Iran, Turkey, Caucasus and North West-China). An ashig is a poet, composer, singer, musical performer and occasionally a dancer who beats on the strings of the saz and improvises serenades and ballads. The musical and poetic heritage of Azerbaijani ashigs dates back to the 14th-century and was created, preserved and is still passed on in oral form which demands exceptional musical memory and ear. Vocalist Gochaq Askarov performs with Aliagha Sadiyevtar and Elshan Mansurov kamancha. Promoted in association with the Asian Music Circuit Tickets £12.00

The young Parveen was influenced by her father, Ikramul Majid and then trained by Acharya Chinmoy Lahiri in Calcutta. At 12, she was the youngest artist to receive the Padmashri’, the coveted award from the Government of India. In Bombay, her Guru and mentor was Ustad Mohammed Dilshad Khan with whom she acquired a new dimension to her singing, giving it the required mastery of ragas and a voice culture combined with uplifting spirituality. Parveenji will be accompanied by tabla maestro Partha Sarathi Mukerjee, Chiranjib Chakraborty harmonium and Nina Virdee tanpura. ‘Her matchless voice... held the audience spellbound’ The Times of India Promoted by Kalasangam Tickets £12.00 (concessions £10.00; students £5.00)

Special guest is the intriguing French-Geordie Flossie Malavialle. ‘One of the most successful live bands on the scene’ The Guardian Tickets £17.00 (concessions £15.00)
