Guts and Glory: Heroic Music for Strings, Trumpets and Drums Pioneering period instrument ensemble Spiritato! make their NCEM debut led “vivaciously by violinist Kinga Ujszaszi” (The Times). Beginning with trumpet calls straight from the battlefield, this vibrant programme presents baroque brass at its dazzling best. Featuring virtuosic works by Biber and Schmelzer, the ensemble blends the martial sound of no less than five natural trumpets with inventive and reflective pieces for strings – a showcase of all the pomp and majesty of an Imperial Court at the height of its powers. Masters of the baroque: Js bach and F Couperin Following on from two highly successful residencies with Les Contres-Sujet and the Consone String Quartet, we are delighted to welcome The Goldfinch Ensemble as they join us for the first part of their Emerging programme. Formed in 2014, the musicians met at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and were first prize winners this February at the International Handel Festival in Gottingen. Their programme in York reflects the genius of two European masters of their craft – both towering influences in their own countries – and how they may have been inspired by one another.

JS Bach’s Magnificat with its exuberant choruses, colourful orchestration and beautiful solo writing perfectly captures the divine joy of a pregnant Mary. No less infectious, or musically varied, is CPE Bach’s stylish 1749 setting of the Magnificat which energetically reinvigorates the magnificence of his father’s earlier setting. The ever-popular cantata BWV 140 Wachet auf (“Sleepers, wake”) is the ultimate musical wake-up call for Advent featuring some of JS Bach’s most memorable and timeless music. “YBC is a top notch choir, tempos bright & pacy!” BBC Radio 3 www.yorkshirebachchoir.org.uk Promoted in association with

Winter baroque Carnival un soir de Neige: a Night of snow Music for Advent and dedications to the Virgin Mary are intertwined with intimate, festive lullabies of Byrd alongside Poulenc's secular Un Soir de Neige. We move to the penitential world of Tudor Christmas music contrasting with the stunningly passionate Italian madrigals of Monteverdi drawn together by Rowarth’s new work, A Night of Snow. “One of the most exciting young a cappella groups to have set out their stall in recent years” Peter Phillips, The Tallis Scholars

This acclaimed baroque quartet, led by recorder playing maestro Piers Adams, presents a cheering feast of music for winter performed in their own inimitable, highoctane style! Expect music by Vivaldi, Bach and Handel as well as a few unsung heroes, in a display of baroque brilliance with a modern twist. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons, Van Eyck’s Carol Variations and a suite from Handel’s Messiah provide a seasonal flavour. "The effect is like crossing a Wigmore Hall recital with a Guinness-soaked folk session in an Irish bar…Piers Adams is the standout instrumentalist in this highly competent and infectiously different gang of four."
