CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE YORK EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL A 40th anniversary is clearly a significant milestone causing us both to celebrate, and to review, the changes that have occurred during that period. The Festival has blossomed into an event which is renowned throughout Europe, bringing together musicians at the height of their careers with audiences keen to learn and engage, becoming a beacon of musical excellence. Our association with BBC Radio 3 helps ensure that festival concerts are heard world-wide. The International Young Artists Competition draws in emerging talent – young ensembles wanting to make their mark on history – from across the globe: this year musicians join us from as far afield as Russia, Japan, Israel, the UK and across continental Europe. 2017 also marks the anniversaries of two giants of the early music world – Monteverdi (b.1567) and Telemann (d.1767). Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers is an enduring favourite and makes a spectacular festival opening concert as we present Robert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini in a unique promenade performance – encouraging audiences to engage directly with the musicians and absorb the glorious sonorities of York Minster. Telemann’s music is universally enjoyed and is represented here by both the youthful University of York Baroque Ensemble, and through the genius of gamba specialist Richard Boothby. It is perhaps timely that we are also commemorating the Reformation – which sparked one of the greatest political

Artistic Advisers John Bryan, Kati Debretzeni, Lindsay Kemp, Peter Seymour 02

upheavals ever faced by Europe as Luther’s burning resentment against corruption changed lives and enforced migration. 500 years later there are some uncomfortable parallels so it is appropriate that we are taking time for reflection through the music of that great Lutheran Bach with soloists Kati Debretzeni, Carole Cerasi and Alison McGillivray and with a semi-staged production of the St Matthew Passion led by Peter Seymour. Other artists joining in the festivities also include The Sixteen directed by Harry Christophers, the award-winning vocal ensemble Cinquecento, medievalists Mala Punica and the sparklingly virtuosic B’Rock Orchestra from Ghent performing the music of Haydn, Mozart and Boccherini. Further highlights include a special birthday ‘Come and Sing’ performance of Tallis’s 40-part motet Spem in alium which is open to everyone and should prove to be a very suitable way to celebrate a birthday. I am delighted to welcome Hiscox Insurance who are joining us as headline sponsors for the next three years, supporting creativity and excellence alongside Harrowells Solicitors, JWP Creers and Shepherd Building Group. One way or another, there’s every reason to think that the fifth decade of YEMF will be every bit as exciting as the first four! We look forward to celebrating with you at this rather special party! “THEN AND NOW CHANGING TIMES” John Bryan, Professor of Music at the University of Huddersfield A performer in the very first York Early Music Week in 1977, John looks back over the first 40 years of the Festival, a period which has witnessed the discovery of previously unknown ‘early’ repertories and many changes in approaches to performance and presentation. What has driven these changes, and how have they affected our understanding of what ‘early music’ has to offer to us today?

MUSICA TRANSALPINA In 1588 a radical publication brought music from continental Europe to the attention of an avid Elizabethan audience. Musica Transalpina was a book of madrigals and chansons with specially written texts in English, and it soon became a new repertory for viol consort as well – not only had it changed places, it had been changed by its time. The Rose Consort dip into this repertory to present madrigals by Marenzio, Palestrina and Ferrabosco alongside chansons by Lassus and songs and instrumental pieces by William Byrd.

‘Invictissima’ (‘most unconquerable’) was a word often used to describe the might of the emperors, dukes and princes of Habsburg, but the Habsburgs also showed their power by employing many of the finest musicians from across Europe including Jacobus Vaet, Kapellmeister to Archduke Maximilian II of Austria, whose music demonstrates an adventurous mind and impressive versatility. This concert commemorates the 450th anniversary of Vaet’s death with motets and liturgical music for the Habsburg chapels, with a work based on Lutheran melodies by his pupil and friend, Jacobus Regnart. “exquisitely controlled ... beautifully shaped... the voices—silken and effortless—seem to be suspended in amber” BBC Music Magazine www.ensemblecinquecento.com

IMAGING THE HOLY REFORMATION, COUNTER-REFORMATION, AND THE ARTS An illustrated lecture by Eamon Duffy, Emeritus Professor of the History of Christianity in the University of Cambridge The Reformation not only transformed the religious landscape of northern Europe: it also initiated a revolution in the visual and musical arts. While the Catholic Church remained committed to the transmission of gospel truth through the senses of sound, hearing, and touch, many Reformation communities believed that the primacy of God’s word as the sole means of divine self-revelation demanded a repudiation of the arts as legitimate vehicles of salvation: this talk explores some of the consequences.

TELEMANN’S COLLEGIUM MUSICUM The German tradition of the ‘collegium musicum’ describes societies of musicians who convened to play together, often at public venues such as coffee houses. Telemann founded one in Leipzig consisting of a mixture of professionals and students, and the music of his anthology Musique de table almost certainly reflects the kind of amiable music they would have played. This programme brings together suites, concertos, quartets, trios and solos, fittingly showcasing students from the University of York alongside Ensemble-in-Association, Compagnia d’Istrumenti.

Haydn and Mozart were masters of one of the classical period’s brightest new genres, the string quartet, but it was often in these works that their respect and affinity for the contrapuntal textures of the Baroque are most influential, as in Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue and the dazzling counterpoint of the finale to his K387 String Quartet. The Consone Quartet pair these works with Haydn’s more clearly classical Op. 50 No. 5, known as ‘The Dream’ “Impeccable … a group to watch” York Press www.consonequartet.com

The Sixteen returns to the Minster for a concert of exquisite music by two masters of sacred choral music separated by four centuries. Palestrina’s mass based on the famous popular song L’homme armé was hugely popular in the 16th century, when it would have served as a timely reminder of the coarse atmosphere of war. Poulenc was also affected by conflict, and his Un soir de neige, composed in December 1944, reflects both the inner feeling of peace associated with Christmas and the bleak solitude of another winter of occupation in his native France. ‘…spine-shiveringly radiant from first to last.’ The Times www.thesixteen.com

YORKSHIRE BAROQUE SOLOISTS directed by Peter Seymour

JS BACH ST MATTHEW PASSION BWV 244B (1727 VERSION) Bach’s St Matthew Passion was never designed to be a concert piece, but some of the most exciting performances in recent years have been ones in which the latent drama of the piece has been vividly realised. In this performance of Peter Seymour’s new edition of Bach’s early version, Yorkshire Baroque Soloists seek out this element in a semi-staged production directed by Thomas

Guthrie and featuring some of today’s most vital interpreters of the roles of Evangelist, Christ and Pilate and arias performed by members of the solo voice choirs. Reflecting the central role of the ‘great Passion’ in the Good Friday liturgy, the sense created of a community enduring with dignity the traumatic events of the Crucifixion is also stirred here in organ solos and chorales involving the participation of the congregation – otherwise known as the audience!

These three chorales outline the work as a prelude, interlude and postlude. The audience will be invited to a short rehearsal at 6.30pm of the three chorales they will be singing. For the sheet music and a recording for private preparation see
