Fallen rifleman buried
} Lehlohonolo Manoto
OF the 13 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who were killed in the Central African Republic (CAR) by the Seleka rebels, six were based at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein. Rifleman Motsamai “Mafu” William Boijane (27) from Masilo, Theunissen, was one of the six soldiers who were buried during the weekend. Two other funerals, in Bloemfontein and Botshabelo, were also held for the other five (three in Bloemfontein and two in Botshabelo) soldiers. The well-attended Theunissen funeral service was held at the Masilo Community Hall and among those who attended were Free State Legislature acting speaker Ouma Tsopo, Lejweleputswa district mayor Mathabo Leeto, Tswelopele mayor Matshidiso “Matsho” Mathide, Masilonyana mayor Stephen Koalane and speaker John Mabitle as well as several SANDF officials led by Maj. Gen. Mbatha. The funeral programme consisted of two parts, the first part included speeches by family and friends with the second including a service by military officials. Koalane indicated that South Africa was not an island, but part of Africa and also had
the responsibility of assisting other countries. He reminded the mourners not to forget that South Africa had received freedom from other African states. He hailed Motsamai as a man of honour who sacrificed his life for the betterment of the country. He also thanked the municipality for the role they had played in assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Tsopo conveyed Premier Ace Magashule’s message of condolences to the family. During the military programme, it was stated that Boijane had joined the Defence Force in 2008 and wanted to become a paratrooper, where he became a rifleman. The troopers were informed on 31 December to report for duty on 1 January. At the parade they were informed that they would be leaving for the CAR on the night of the 1st for national duty. An SANDF officer explained that Boijane loved training by nature and continued with it in the CAR by using sandbags to train himself and other soldiers who had followed suite when they saw him train. The SANDF stated that while the soldiers had been in the CAR, they had been heavily outnumbered but managed to fight the rebels who were about 3 000 and managed to kill more than 600. Boijane was described as an asset to the country. Mbatha pleaded with South Africans to wake up because the SANDF was not a political football, and added that it was responsible for protection and peace-keeping in that country and the continent as a whole. He also said that the SANDF had known the troopers chosen as peaceful and disciplined, that Boijane had not died for himself but the country and that if soldiers went to African countries for the money, they were in the wrong business. He also indicated that Boijane had been thoroughly qualified as he had undergone intensive military training and that the soldiers had served the country with dignity and dedication.

He emotionally and humbly pleaded with the media to stop calling them names, ridiculing the SANDF and embarrass them. He also advised the media to do their research properly before writing any story. The Boijane family thanked the community, the municipality and the SANDF for their
comforting words and for assisting with the funerals showing that they understood that their son had died for his country leaving behind a wife and small child. ) Manoto is a senior communications officer for the Government Communications and Information Systems (GCIS).

Da Silva eyes debut album HEIDEDAL-BORN singer, songwriter, dancer and poet, Laverne Da Silva, started her artistic career at the tender age of four when she was inducted into the dancing group The Dancing Sensations with her older sister, Tereska Muishond, at her side. By age seven, she was “discovered” as a singer by a music teacher at her school and was groomed as a soloist. The multi-talented performer, now based in Johannesburg, joined the prestigious Bloemfontein Children’s Choir as a classical singer at the age of 11 after one audition. Da Silva went on to tour the world with the choir and took part in various choir festivals and competitions by the time she turned 16. Musical influences for the soprano range from rhythm and blues and jazz to soul despite the 29-year-old being trained as a classical vocalist. The pint-sized performer has been a member of a number of diverse groups including The Obita Band, a hip-hop band led by rapper Obita, the Derrick Scheepers Jazz Band and poetry duo, Bushwomen, with her sister Tereska.
LAVERNE DA SILVA
She is currently working on her debut album which she says explores different styles of house music and will also show her versatility in the use of the spoken word and singing in languages like English, Afrikaans and Portuguese. The album is jam-packed with big-name producers like DJ Clock, DJ Mono T, Mapiano & Baadmaan Style of the Kalawa Jazmee stable, Sticky and Sound Quest from South Africa, from Angola, DJ Havana, Dorivaldo Mix and Nicol Ananaz, who produced a Zouk track featuring one of the biggest names in Angolan music, Anselmo Ralph, who worked on the album. Other featured artists on the album are her sister Tereska, Dr. Chubby and P Quente. Da Silva is an amazing and energetic live performer who is as passionate and creative on stage as she is in studio. Her vision is to one day be the biggest “diva” in Africa, yet still remain grounded and true to herself. ) Da Silva was interviewed via email and social networks from Angola where she is currently performing.

Laid soldiers to rest THE body of one of the 13 soldiers killed in the Central African Republic on 24 March is loaded onto an army carrier at the Vista campus of the University of the Free State on Saturday during the funeral service for three of the soldiers. Photo: Emile Hendricks
IT is shocking that no senior Free State government official was seemingly available to represent the provincial government at the Bloemfontein funeral for 3 of the 13 soldiers killed in the Central African Republic (CAR) on 24 March. At the combined funerals of Corporal Ntebaleng Mogorosi and Riflemen Jimmy Mxhosana and Kgobane Thulo held at the Vista campus of the University of the Free State on Saturday, not a single senior Free State government official could be seen. Thandi Tobias-Pokolo, Trade and Industry deputy minister, who still owns a house in the Grasslands suburb of Bloemfontein where at least two of the soldiers lived, spoke on behalf of the government after rising from the floor to speak in the absence of an official. She apologised in advance as she had not been prepared to speak. That not a single German luxury sedan could be filled up at the taxpayers’ expense and pointed in the direction of the Vista campus still baffles my mind. For all the complaints that the media is negative and should stop asking questions as to why the soldiers were deployed in the CAR to begin with and then to have not one senior in the provincial government attending the funeral leaves a lot to be desired. At a time when the nation looks for comfort from its leaders, it was heartening to have no less than three mayors, a municipal council speaker as well as a legislature speaker, all of whom are from the area, attend the Viljoenskroon funeral. Out of respect for our fellow countrymen, I’ll not repeat what ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said when questions were asked about the troops’ deployment in the CAR. I would, however, want to hear what Mthembu’s response is to the fact that no senior official of the provincial government attended the funeral.

Every action has an agenda TEBOHO MOTLOUNG, Bethlehem: I SAT with disgust as the news unfolded that we had lost 13 SANDF soldiers. I wondered if our government thought we were stupid and gullible. Statements were made of why we had deployed army personnel in the Central African Republic (CAR) and that the attack (on the South African soldiers) had been due to poor intelligence. To point out a few things regarding the CAR issue, the so-called president Bozize was not an honest man. He took over the country in the same fashion ten years ago and many lives were lost and families misplaced.
He ran the country like his own little tuck-shop and democracy was just a dream for the people of the CAR, and yet we deploy soldiers to the CAR. Why do we send out troops to the most unstable country in Central Africa and then claim we were doing our national duty? I think it is safe to say that the reasons surrounding the deployment are politically motivated and are in the interest of our president and his cronies. There are mines and minerals in the CAR and if one should dig deep, I am sure one will find some of our leaders having shares there. Let’s not be fooled, people, every army deployment is political and serves

the interest of the selected few and not of the whole country, so when we elect leaders who are going to send our brothers, sisters, cousins and family members to such conditions, let it be for the good of the people and not otherwise. How do we send an army to protect a president who took over a country by means of a coup and then claim we were doing our national duty? Most of these African presidents do not even stay in their respective countries, they send their children to schools in America, Europe and Asia and spend most of their time living abroad and yet we send our troops to protect them.
Jansen tweets comment
} Sidwell Guduka “I TRULY wish Madiba would live forever. “I also wish some journalists would have more ethics before completely distorting a message.” This is what Prof. Jonathan Jansen, University of the Free State (UFS) vice-chancellor, tweeted on Monday following media reports quoting him as saying he wished former president Nelson Mandela would die. Mandela (94), who spent nine days in hospital due to an illness, has been discharged and is said to be recovering well at home.

Political double standards
THEUNIS BOTHA, Christian Democratic Party leader: UNFORTUNATELY it appears as though double political standards apply when it comes to who will receive medical parole or even amnesty. The medical parole granted to the fraudster Shabir Shaik, after which he was shown playing
golf, means that any medical parole will now have a cloud of political favouritism hanging over it. It appears more and more evident that DerbyLewis is not being kept in jail for his involvement in a murder, but rather because of who was murdered. The 77-year-old DerbyLewis, sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the murder
of SACP leader Chris Hani, suffers from various ailments including cancer. This sort of inequality is prohibited by the Constitution. We call on government to also look at what politicking in parole does to community relations in the country. We cannot afford to exclude fairness and forgiveness, thus creating more polarisation.

‘To serve God is to serve humanity’ } Flora Teckie GOD is the Creator of all things, the earth, the heaven and everything in between. He has caused every living thing to come into being. God’s love for us is the reason for our creation. The essence of God is beyond our understanding, but His love touches our lives continually. The way God’s love flows to us is through His Eternal Covenant. “A covenant in the religious sense”, according to the Bahá’í writings, “is a binding agreement between God and man, whereby God requires of man certain behaviour in return for which He guarantees certain blessings, or whereby He gives man certain bounties in re-
turn for which He takes from those who accept them an undertaking to behave in a certain way.” According to His Eternal Covenant, God never leaves us alone and without guidance. He sends us His messengers or manifestations periodically. Manifestations of God are universal educators who teach us how to live in accordance with the will of God and how to achieve true happiness. “The source of all learning,” Bahá’u’lláh says, “is the knowledge of God, exalted be His Glory and this cannot be attained save through the knowledge of His divine manifestation.” Religions brought by divine manifestations are progressive expres-
sions of God’s revelation for humanity. They all have the same basic spiritual teachings, which are repeated from age to age. The differences among religions, with respect to their social ordinances and forms of worship, exist because various religions have appeared at different times in history and among different peoples. The ability to distinguish between the eternal spiritual truths on the one hand, and the social instruction specific to a time and place on the other, makes it possible to appreciate both the unity of religions and their diversity. What is our part in the covenant? A covenant is a binding agreement between God and us. God al-
ways keeps His side of the covenant by sending us His guidance periodically and related to the needs and capacity of humanity at the time the guidance is received. Our part in the covenant is to recognize the manifestation of God and to follow His teachings. The purpose of our lives, according to the Bahá’í writings, is to know God and to worship Him. Besides, it is “to carry forward an ever advancing civilization”. Knowledge and worship of God lead us to the love of God; love of God in turn leads us to obedience to His Commandments and service in His path. To serve God is to serve humanity. Bahá’u’lláh says: “God’s purpose
in sending His prophets (manifestations) unto men is twofold. The first is to liberate the children of men from the darkness of ignorance and guide them to the light of true understanding. “The second is to ensure the peace and tranquillity of mankind and provide all the means by which they can be established.” Therefore, to work towards peace and tranquillity for humanity is also part of our covenant with our Creator. As Bahá’u’lláh says: “The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” For feedback contact: mangaung@bahailsa.org.za; or call 082 773 8301.

Free State schools go for goal } Sidwell Guduka SPARKS are bound to fly when Free State u.12 primary schools take part in the Danone Nations Cup provincial finals on Saturday. The Free State version will be held at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Heidedal where six regional winners will fight for a spot to represent the province nationally. The overall winner will go on to represent the province in the national finals in Johannesburg on 22 July. They will join the Rietrivier Primary School and Siphumele Primary School of the Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal respectively. Both schools have already booked their place in the next stage of the tournament. The teams that will be in action this
weekend are the Monamodi Primary School (Lejweleputswa region), Selogile Primary School (Fezile Dabi region), Luckhoff Combined School (Xhariep region), Matswathaka Primary School (Thabo Mofutsanyana region), Emang Primary School (Motheo region) and Tlong-Kganyeng Primary School (Masilonyana region). Ramoshodi Maleka, team manager of Tlong-Kganyeng, said his boys were raring to go and were in good shape as they had been training twice a day during the Easter holidays. “This is the fourth year that we have been playing in the provincial finals of the competition. We finished second in 2011 and 2012. We are hoping to go one better this year,” he said. Maleka singled out his captain, Lebogang Litabe, and midfielder, Teboho
Mokgotsi, as key players in the team. “We have been grooming them from the age of seven and they are both very dedicated. I believe they will play a pivotal role to help us achieve our goal of reaching the national finals.” The school that will emerge as winner in the national finals will win air tickets to the home of Barclays Premier League
and its football stars in London, England, where they will compete against winners from other countries around the world. “If we are the school to go to London we plan on taking the team to the Harmony Sports Academy in Virginia so that they can learn more about the sport and what is needed from a good soccer player,” Maleka said.

After much deliberation the judging panel decided that Baxter had done enough to be named Absa Premiership Coach winning R15 000 for his efforts.

Absa sponsorship manager Steward Masela highlighted Kaizer Chiefs’ consistency when the winners were announced saying: “Consistency deserves to be rewarded and that’s why I congratulate both Itumeleng Khune and Stuart Baxter on winning the Absa Premiership Player and Coach for the third quarter. We now look forward to an eagerly anticipated fourth quarter.” The name of Swallows coach Zeca Marques was also discussed at length, where many of the judges in attendance believed Marques deserved to be recognised for turning around the fortunes of the Beautiful Birds. Moroka Swallows finished the second quarter bottom of the Absa Premiership standings having collected a solitary point. The judging panel felt Marques should be commended for guiding the club into the upper half of the Absa Premiership table with ambitions of a top four finish very much on the agenda. Also receiving notable mentions were Clive Barker for the role he has played at Bidvest Wits and Craig Rosslee for steering AmaZulu away from the dreaded relegation zone. Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune scooped the R15 000 for winning the Absa Premiership Player and was largely recognised by the
judging panel for being the standout performer. Khune was instrumental in the successful run Kaizer Chiefs put together and the club kept four clean sheets and conceding just four times out of the eight matches played. Judges felt Khune played a dual role for his team, not only through his performances in goal, but he also set up a number of attacks through his distribution. The judging panel discussed a number of players through the session with Khune’s teammate Siphiwe Tshabalala featuring regularly. Tshabalala was commended for his resurgence in form and versatility and for playing a vital role for the club this season. Free State Stars midfielder Luyolo Nomandela and Moroka Swallows’ recent acquisition Larry Cohen also received mention for their contributions throughout the third quarter. ) The judging panel consisted of yours truly, Sidwell Guduka (Express newspaper), Velile Mbuli (SABC), Timothy Molobi (City Press), Clint Roper (Soccer-Laduma), Melissa Reddy (KickOff), Thabiso Tema (SuperSport), Senzo Sokhela (Ilanga) and Dominic Peel (Daily Dispatch). Uphill battle for Bulls } Sidwell Guduka
HURRAY! Cheetahs players celebrate their emphatic win at the Free State Stadium on Saturday.

FANTASTIC! Burton Francis’s penalty that broke the hearts of the Stormers fans.
THE struggling Bulls will have their backs against the wall when they entertain the Toyota Cheetahs in a Super Rugby match on Saturday at 19:10 at the Loftus Versfelt Stadium. The Bulls were brought down 23-20 by the Brumbies in their last fixture in Canberra. In fact, before that loss the Pretoria-side were beaten 23-18 by the Reds in Brisbane and 41-19 by the Crusaders in Christchurch. Against the high-flying Cheetahs, the Bulls meet a side that is oozing confidence after registering five consecutive wins and will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run streak to six matches at their expense. On Saturday, coach Naka Drotské’s men showed character when they came from behind to defeat the Stormers 26-24 with the last kick of the match. With no time left on the clock, the Cheetahs were trailing 24-23 and they were awarded a penalty from a bit of an awkward angle, but Burton Francis made no mistake from the spot and sent the home fans into a frenzy with his winning kick. Drotské’s celebration after the match showed that the win was crucial to him and his team ahead of their upcoming fixture. He jumped, punched the air and shouted “Yesssssss”. “It was tough. I thought it was all over when the siren
signalled for full time. “But the players fought hard to notch up the win. Credit to the forwards; they won the ball from a scrum and never lost it. “It’s a win worth celebrating. It was our first win against the Stormers in Bloemfontein since 2007. “They are a quality side with a lot of Springboks,” Drotské said. “It was very important for us to win. I think every game is important to us. “We’ll take confidence out of this and will keep our feet on the ground. There is still a long way to go. “We haven’t achieved any of our goals yet; long-term goals. We still have to put in a lot of hard work so that we can achieve our goals,” he added. The Senekal-born coach believes sparks will fly at Loftus on Saturday night. “It’s going to be tough against the Bulls. They are definitely with their backs against the wall after losing three games on tour. “Loftus is a tough place to play in; there will be approximately 40 000 people on the stands. “We’ve got to be at our best and keep the momentum going. “We haven’t been able to beat the Bulls in Pretoria for a long time now,” “However, we’ve got to keep the positive out of the past five wins and stick to that. “I believe we’ll surprise them in front of their fans.”

Celtic ready to take on Chiefs } Sidwell Guduka
BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC have promised to show Kaizer Chiefs an exit from the Nedbank Cup when the two sides clash in the quarterfinals at the Free State Stadium on Saturday. The kick-off is at 20:15. The inconsistent Mangaung side have been blowing hot and cold in the league, but their inspired cup run has them dreaming of winning their second silverware of the season. Siwelele have already added the Telkom Knockout to their then dusty trophy cabinet in December 2012. To reach the quarters, they defeated minors Milano United 4-1 in Bloemfontein before seeing off Free State Stars 2-1 in Qwaqwa. The last time Phunya Sele Sele played Amakhosi in a cup game was in the MTN 8 at the Rand Stadium in 2010. Chiefs won the match 1-0, courtesy of a goal scored by Knowledge Musona (now plying his trade abroad) in the 22nd minute. Both sides have made several changes to their squads since that quarterfinal fixture and Chiefs are under a new coach. On Saturday it will not be Clinton Larsen (Celtic) versus Vladimir Vermezovic (Chiefs), but Larsen versus Stuart Baxter. Playing at their happy hunting ground, Larsen’s men need to go at Baxter’s troops from the opening whistle and give them little space to move. But that is easier said than done, especially against a side with Chiefs’ cup pedigree. They are the most successful club in the PSL in
terms of winning trophies. Celtic’s newest striker, Roderick Mutuma, said they were ready to shoot down Chiefs at the weekend. “Chiefs are a quality team with quality players, but we’ll have to go for broke. We also have a quality team with quality players that can match them pound for pound on the field. We want to avenge the 3-0 defeat they inflicted on us two weeks ago,” said the Zimbabwean who made his Celtic debut against Maritzburg United on Sunday. “I was happy to finally make my Celtic debut at the weekend. I think my performance was not too bad for someone who last played a competitive match in December. I need three or four matches to regain my form, but I’m almost there. I want to help my team win another trophy and finish the season in a respectable position,” he said. “I’m positive we’ll return to our winning ways at the expense of Chiefs. They won’t beat us again this time around. We have rectified all the mistakes we made when we met them in the league. We need to go all out and win the Nedbank Cup for our supporters. For us to achieve that, we need to beat the best teams in the tournament,” he added. Celtic will depend on speedy midfielders such as Joel Mogorosi, Ruzaigh Gamildien, Lyle Lakey and forwards Luyanda Bacela and Mutuma. They should give Chiefs anxious moments on attack. Teaming up with Siphiwe Tshabalala, George Lebese, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Kingston Nkhatha, they could outfox the Celtic side.

CONFIDENT: Roderick Mutuma, Celtic striker. Celtic will be minus Lerato Manzini who is out for the remainder of the season due to an injury,
while Chiefs will be without the services of suspended Reneilwe Letsholonyane.
