Hospitals need basic medication } Selloane Khalane

SECOND OFFERING: Poet and writer Charmaine Kolwane will today launch her second book at the Naln Centre in Bloemfontein. The book, Poetry Commando, is an antholo gy of poems that deal with social issues. Charmaine said she hopes to promote a culture of reading among young people with the selfpublished book, hence the launch will also feature gr. 5 to gr. 8 learners from the Legae Primary School in Bochabela. “Poetry found me ten years ago wan dering with no direction and since then words have com manded my life and have given me a purpose,” she said. FINANCIAL WOES in the Free State Department of Health continue as hospitals and clinics operate without basic medication and food supply. Employees at the Thusanong Hospital in Odendaalsrus said the hospital had been operating without basic medication such as paracetamol (painkillers), aspirin and sachets used for the treatment of diarrhoea and dehydration for months now. The Tweeling Hospital in the north of the Free State is said to also be without Furosemide used to treat patients for hypertension. Basil Alexander, DA spokesperson for Health in the Free State, said companies supplying food parcels to hospitals were not getting paid on time and therefore are not consistent in delivering food to hospitals. The Public Servants Association of South Africa Free State manager, Gerhart Koortz, said the Health Department was waiting for the new financial year, which starts on Monday, to be able to purchase medication. “National should put the department under administration,” said Koortz. Earlier this year, Express reported that the department was in financial distress and was allegedly barely coping with paying salaries. On 17 January the department’s acting chief financial of-

ficer, T.R. Kometsi, released an internal memo to senior management instructing them to stop all payments and procurement with immediate effect. During the department’s budget vote a fortnight ago, the newly-appointed Health MEC, Benny Malakoane, admitted that his department was experiencing financial difficulty. The Congress of the People (Cope) acting secretary, Mzwandile Hleko, said medication supply was a huge problem because the department was broke and could not render other health services. “Poor budget planning and constant changing of senior administration staff are some of the contributing factors leading to the problem,” said Hleko. During the budget vote Malakoane revealed that the department was allocated R7,89 billion in the 2013-’14 financial year, a 1,75% increase from the current one. Mantoa Thoabala, ANC member of the Free State Legislature, said she was concerned that the budget given to the department was not enough, considering the challenges it faced. The Health Department spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, admitted that the department was facing financial crises. “We have to make due with the little that we have,” Mvambi said. Mvambi said the department was waiting for the beginning of the new financial year to make payments to some suppliers who have not been paid.

Brics summit is serious business THE establishment of Brics is not to create a new “talk show”, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday. “Brics is not a talk show. It is a serious grouping. I’ve just identified here that ever since the Brics grouping has been established, intra-trade has grown. But also bilateral trade has grown. That indicates [it is] not a talk show,” Zuma told reporters at the presidential guesthouse in Pretoria. “We are able to discuss things and take decisions. If, for example, we talk about the eminent establishment of a development bank, we discussed this a while ago and immediately charged our finance ministers to work on a modality. We are now ready to launch it,” he said. The fifth Brics summit began in Durban yesterday. This is the first Brics summit to take place on African soil. Brics is a group of developing nations formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Zuma said all the heads of state of the Brics countries would be present during the summit. A total of 19 heads of state would attend. Several agreements would be signed, cementing economic ties between China and South Africa. Zuma said a declaration on strategic partnerships between Russia and South Africa would be signed in fields such as defence, education, energy, science, technology and transport. South Africa will chair the group for 12 months after Durban and then hand over to Brazil. In 2012, South Africa’s total trade with Brics countries stood at R294 billion – 11% higher than the 2011 figure of R264 billion. Trade with Brazil grew from R18 billion to R20 billion in 2012, while trade with Russia rose from R3 billion to R5 billion – a 45% increase. Trade with India, South Africa’s sixth largest trading partner, grew from R53 billion in 2011 to R67 billion in 2012 – a 26% increase. Trade with China – which ranks first among South Africa’s Brics trade partners – totalled R188,4 billion in 2011 and R201 billion in 2012, up 7%. A total of 125 delegates from China, 125 from Russia, 74 from India, 60 from Brazil and 242 from South Africa, will be part of the discussions at the summit. A Brics business council will be launched to strengthen business ties among the five countries. Business will also deliberate on the envisaged Brics cable – a high capacity optic fibre cable of 28 400 km – linking Brics countries. Zuma said the establishment of a Brics development bank would mobilise financial resources for infrastructure and sustainable projects for member countries and other emerging economies. During the summit, Brics finance ministers would present the results of a feasibility study on the bank. – Fin24

A PRAYER MEETING for non-violence against women and children, which left many women in tears, was held in Bohlokong, Bethlehem, on Saturday morning. People who attended the ceremony, especially women, could not hold back their tears when the victims of rape narrated their stories. About five victims that included an innocent girl of five, were in attendance. One of the victims, let’s call her Roo, said she was approached by a group of men in her house at night. She said they demanded money and raped her in front of her seven-yearold daughter. “It is not all men who rape, but please, let those who don’t advise others,” she said. Another victim said on 30 January at night she heard a window breaking. She said two men instructed her to lie on the bed. “They took me to another room since I was in the room with my younger brother. They started raping me and they told me that I should not scream. My younger brother escaped through the window and called the neighbours,” she said. A ceremony which was aimed at praying for violence against women and children to stop and also to hand over the memorandum of grievances to the office of the Minister of Justice saw hundreds of women and men attend. Extension 1 in Bohlokong was covered with green and black attire of the ANC Women’s League marching in the street towards the sports ground where the event was hosted. The Women’s League gave a memorandum to the deputy minister of Justice, Andries Nel. Sesi Ntombela, the MEC for Social Development and ANC Women’s League chairperson, said: “We want all people who rape and kill to get a life sentence. They should not get parole, because they do the same thing when

They have caused damage. We know that they have rights, but we don’t want them to get lawyers anymore.” Nel said he wanted to thank the Women’s League for organising the event and bringing the community together. He said for the side of the criminal justice system they were working very hard to make the system more effective and more efficient. He said the police have already reintroduced a special sexu-

al offences unit. “From our side as the Justice Department we are reintroducing the sexual offences courts. We know that many of these crimes are committed at home and that is why we need a transformational attitude. We must all come together to fight this,” he said.

In the lap of luxury

PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA’S homestead in KwaNxamalala, Nkandla.

Joys of being a Mrs First Lady My view Selloane Khalane senior political journalist “LET THEM EAT CAKE”, a statement supposedly spoken by Queen Marie Antoinette of France when told about the peasants in her country having no bread. Like Marie Antoinette, I too have a fetish for the finer things in life, only Marie Antoinette was the Queen of France and I am just a humble journalist. Having weighed several options I realise that if I were to even remotely live like Marie Antoinette I would have to get hitched to the Spear of the Nation and head the Nkandla compound. Last year, President Zuma’s private parts and multimillion rand compound, Nkandla, undoubtedly stirred the nation. Mind you, my president is one of those figures who tag several marital statuses on the social network Facebook: he is a widow, married, engaged and divorced all at the same time. While I have mulled over how one man can keep tabs on four wives when one wife is an unending rollercoaster, I found myself secretly wanting Zuma to “wife” me and turn me into a first lady. Yes, I know it sounds crazy, how an ambitious modern woman can want to share a 70-year-old “kingpin” with four other women. Since I have concluded that I am, however, not in love with him, but I am, however, smitten with his power and yes his money, even if it’s your taxes. Bear in mind that being a political journalist I can assure you I am not the only woman trying to nail the president. I have seen how powerful women in

politics pant at the sight of my president. Eager as Brett Murray’s “thrust” I’ve seen how some of these women are eager to occupy one of the compounds in Nkandla. Who wouldn’t want to live in a compound with an air-conditioning system worth R1,5 million and bulletproof windows worth R3 million? Not to mention the in-house gymnasium, which I doubt the first ladies make use of. So dear reader, do understand that should Zuma ever decide to cast his eyes on my voluptuousness (I hear that’s how he likes them) I will certainly enjoy the perks of the president’s said R2 million spousal budget. A budget footed by you. I am absolutely sure I can get accustomed to the overseas trips and shopping sprees while my secretary caters to my every whim. Why should I care for the millions of poverty-stricken South Africans still chasing the ANC dream? “Let them eat cake,” as Marie Antoinette would say. Yes, we were sold the “democratic country” illusion, but you should understand we are all equals, but others are more equal than others. So, dear reader, please keep paying your taxes as you know the devil has to wear Prada! ) This is a translated reprint of the Volksblad’s Jong Stemme column first published in Volksblad on Saturday, 23 March.

Artists still struggle } Ayanda Roda ON 11 April we mark the birthday of the late Comrade Thami Moleko who contributed massively in the struggle of the arts in this country and the Free State. He led the struggle of the arts with no hope of being paid or getting any funding from any department in this country and he believed strongly that the arts and cultural fraternity needed political intervention. I hope the current and future generations can know this hero of our struggle in the arts. He would be disappointed to see the artists suffering and the rot that is bedeviling the industry. Even ordinary ANC comrades knew who Comrade Thami was. Ill-treating, exploiting and dividing artists were included in these barbaric policies. It no doubt contributed to his worldview and zeal to change the living condition of artists in this country. Comrade Moleko was a giant amongst men, who fell before his time. He knew that to fulfil the aspirations of the majority of our artists he had to sacrifice his artistic career. You will hear stories of how he survived countless attempts of sabotage from his comrades and artists themselves bought by government officials to deal with him, as he was very vocal on cultural issues. It is not surprising, given the threats to his life, that he was more than prepared to face the bullet by infiltrating sabotages

by government officials and his fellow artists. This he did diligently without the enemies finding what to use to destroy him and this shows that he led from the front and he was disciplined as a cader and a strategist of our glorious struggle of artists. He was also a romantic. This affirms Ernesto “Che” Guevara’s assertion that “a true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love” and so Moleko was. Comrade Moleko was very simple and humble and if he were alive today, he would be visiting arts centres across the country to address artists’ problems and needs. He spoke the language of the

artists, not capitalists and opportunists. He did not demand a crowd of 10 000 in arts centres for him to address artists. His words directly touched artists and reciprocally the masses reasoned with him without chasing newspaper and Facebook pages, TV and radio headlines. This made comrade Moleko to be loved and adored by the majority of artists. When everybody had written the Union of Artists (Creative Workers Union of SA – CWUSA) off as a result of not been recognized by government, he chose to remain and build the union, because he knew the only potential way to liberate the arts industry was through a fearless organisation which was not managed by government officials and begging for funding. He knew that a truly liberated industry would be better served with independent structures, which has its own footprints amongst artists. I’m talking about a comrade who said artists had to be employed in the Department of Arts and Culture and Pacofs – Pacofs needed fieldworkers in all five Free State districts to improve arts and culture development. In addition, he gave the Department of Arts and Culture a programme of an Arts in School. ) Roda is the Association of Independent Recording Companies (AIRCO) Free State’s chairperson and director of Danduza productions.

New telescopes at site THE Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) network has come a significant step closer to completion with the installation and first light of three new one-metre-sized telescopes at the South African Astronomical Observatory’s (SAAO) observing site at Sutherland, South Africa. The telescopes are part of a network of telescopes spread around the world used to study time domain astrophysics. This branch of astronomy is concerned with the study of objects which vary intrinsically with time or which change their appearance with time due to interactions with other objects. Examples of the types of objects which will be studied with the new telescopes at Sutherland include exoplanets, supernovae, gamma ray bursts and minor planets in our solar system. In order to study these types of objects in detail astronomers need to be able to observe them over long periods. With a single telescope this is not possible as daylight interrupts observations. However, placing several telescopes around the world in different time zones means that once daylight approaches at one observing site astronomers can switch seamlessly to using a telescope located at another site where it is dark. The addition of the telescope node at Sutherland is crucial as it will allow astronomers to conduct observations over longtime periods in the south without interruptions. “The South African Astronomical Observatory is pleased to collaborate with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope project, and we are excited by the prospects for both scientific observations and public outreach activities,” Ted Wil-

liams, director of SAAO, said. A team of LCOGT engineers and technicians, and LCOGT/SAAO astronomy postdoctoral fellow, Abiy Tekola, convened at Sutherland for three weeks during February and early March this year to install and test the new telescopes. The telescopes arrived on site on 18 February and were lifted by cranes into the domes the next day. The first of the three telescopes was fully assembled by the end of 20 February and the telescope went onsky for the first time that night. The second and third telescopes followed over the next two days. Annie Hjelstrom of the LCOGT, the project engineer responsible for the successful installation, commented: “We had a great installation team, the SAAO and SALT staff were very helpful, but this is also the culmination of eight years of design and development. Each telescope is built, configured, tested, and then dismantled at the Goleta, California, headquarters before we put them back together on site.” To date the LCOGT has installed four other identical one-metre telescopes around the globe: an operational prototype at the McDonald Observatory, Texas, United States (April 2012), and three science-grade telescopes at the Cerro Tololo InterAmerican Observatory (CTIO), Chile (October 2012). The trio of telescopes at Sutherland brings the observatory’s total of operational one-metre telescopes to seven. Two more will be installed midyear at the Siding Spring Observatory, Australia, to complete the southern ring, and a second telescope will be installed at the McDonald Observatory before the end of the year.

‘God’s love the reason for our creation’ } Flora Teckie THE essence of God is incomprehensible to the human mind, because the finite cannot comprehend the infinite. A table cannot understand the nature of the carpenter who made it. In the same way, we who are created by God cannot understand the essence of the Creator. Although the essence of God is beyond our understanding, His love touches our lives continually. The way God’s love flows to us is through His eternal covenant. According to His eternal covenant, God never leaves us without guidance. Whenever mankind moves away from God, forgets His teach-

ings, He provides us with one of His Messengers or Manifestations, who would make God’s will and purpose known to us. The Manifestations of God are those special beings who reveal to us the Word and Will of God. When we listen to them we are listening to God. As stated in the Bahá’í Writings: “… that which is the cause of everlasting life, eternal honour, universal enlightenment, real salvation and prosperity is, first of all, the knowledge of God. It is known that the knowledge of God is beyond all knowledge, and it is the greatest glory of the human world…. Second, comes the love of God, the light of which shines in the lamp of the hearts of those who know

God; its brilliant rays illuminate the horizon and give to man the life of the Kingdom”. God, the incomparable, the selfsubsisting, is the Creator of all things, the earth, the heaven and everything in between. God has caused every living thing to come into being. God’s love for us is the reason for our creation. We should always be conscious of this love which protects us, sustains us and fills us with the spirit of life. As Bahá’í Writings say: “O Son of Man! I loved thy creation, hence I created thee. Wherefore, do thou love Me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life”. Despite the varying names we use

for the Creator, there is only one God and it is the Bahá’í view that all of the world’s major religions are progressive expressions of God’s revelation for humanity. The great religious founders (the Manifestations of God) have all come from the one Creator and the religions they established all lead us to Him. Like the lights on one path which are energized from the same source, the religions all enlighten and guide us in our path to God. They are part of a single plan directed by the Creator. If we study major world religions, we will see that they have the same basic spiritual teachings, which are repeated from age to age. Teachings such as truthfulness,

faithfulness, love, generosity, chastity, prayer, justice and humility are among the core teachings of all religions. There are also significant similarities in the histories of religions, the experience of their followers and their impact on the societies around them. The differences among religions, with respect to their social ordinances and forms of worship, exist because various religions have appeared at different times in history and among different peoples. In the second part of this article we will further look into the theme: God’s Covenant with humanity. For feedback contact: mangaung@bahailsa.org.za; or call 082773-8301.

Library services celebrated THE launch and celebration of the Library Week at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), took place on 18 March – a celebration of dedicated library staff that provides important library services such as training of the university’s first year and post-graduate students. “The Library Week has become an annual global event with a goal of raising the profile of libraries and to recognise their importance in spreading knowledge, literacy, innovation, development and citizen empowerment. “Like its international counterpart, South Africa’s Library Week seeks to engender greater national appreciation of the vital

roles libraries play in human development,” said vice-chancellor and principal, Prof. Thandwa Mthembu, during the launch. CUT Library celebrated Library Week by showcasing web-based interactive solutions using the latest technology available for users such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. Mobile technology was also demonstrated to assist students to access e-resources using their mobile phones bringing e-resources beyond library walls. The launch was an opportune moment for the CUT community including the executives, deans and students to express support

for the role the library plays in the life of an institution like the CUT. “This is the occasion to critically assess its state and ability to equip young minds and researchers with requisite knowledge to thrive intellectually and professionally. As members of the constituencies of our library – students, faculty leaders, executives, library leaders and managers, professors and researchers – we are the ones who determine the state and the future of the library,” said Mthembu. Books and magazines were donated to a number of schools in order to expose school learners to the access to information and the use of computers.

Cheetahs ready } Sidwell Guduka THE Toyota Free State Cheetahs will be seeking to register their fourth Vodacom Superrugby win on the trot when they face the Rebels. Kick-off at the Free State Stadium is scheduled on Saturday for 17:05. The Free State lads returned to Bloemfontein with three wins out of four from their Australasian tour after overcoming the Force 19-10 in a tough Superrugby battle last Saturday. Naka Drotske’s troops were trailing the Force 6-7 at the break, but they launched a great fightback in the second half to win the match. The Force held their 7-6 halftime lead until the hour mark when Hayward, a second-half replacement for the injured Sias Ebersohn, slotted his penalty to extend it. “It’s important when you are not at your best to still win and we we’re a bit lucky but we’ll take it,” Cheetahs skipper Adriaan Strauss said. “We want to win every game, but we’ll take the three on the tour and

hopefully we can keep up the momentum back home.” Four penalties from flyhalf Riaan Smit and a late breakaway try from winger Willie le Roux proved enough to add a third win to the more impressive road victories over the Highlanders and Waratahs. The Force, who also came into the match on a high after upsetting the Reds a week before, enjoyed the majority of possession, but had only Winston Stanley’s converted firsthalf try and one Jayden Hayward penalty to show for it. Superrugby fixtures: Friday: Highlanders vs Reds, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin (08:35). Saturday: March Hurricanes vs Kings, Wellington (05:35); Chiefs vs Blues, Bay Park Stadium, Mt Manganui (08:35); Brumbies vs Bulls, Canberra Stadium, Canberra (10:40); Cheetahs vs Rebels, Bloemfontein (17:05); Stormers v Crusaders, DHL Newlands, Cape Town (19:10) Sunday: Waratahs vs Force, Allianz Stadium, Sydney (07:05).

THREE young men have organised a 16-team soccer tournament over the Easter weekend where the winners will pocket a cool R8 000. They are Tumo Siyasi, Taelo Matshakela and Patrick Tekane all from Botshabelo. The tournament will be played at the Section S Sports Grounds (also known as Aces’ grounds) from Friday until Easter Monday. Soccer lovers are expected to gather in large numbers as schools are closed for the Easter holidays. “This is an annual tournament which we host around the same time every year. It is in its fifth year and is growing by leaps and bounds. This tournament is great in a sense that it keeps the young off the streets during the Easter holidays. We appeal to the local business people to support us. We have been running this tournament without any sponsors since its inception,” Siyasi, the tournament’s co-ordinator, told Express. “Interested teams will have to pay a registration fee of R1 200 to feature in the event. This is a fast-growing tournament, the winners will receive R8 000. We are not only considering teams from the Botshabelo area; clubs from surrounding areas may also participate in the event as it is open to everyone. However, they will have to organise their own transport and food,” he said. Apart from the first-prize money, winners will also receive gold medals, a trophy and a full soccer kit. The runners-up will get R3 500, silver medals and full soccer attire. The team finishing third will go home with bronze medals. The closing date for registration is today at 17:00. For more information, interested clubs can phone Tumo on 073-601-8253 or Taelo on 079-818-7043.

No easy task for Celtic } Sidwell Guduka BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC will return from the international break with a home match-up against pacesetters Kaizer Chiefs at the Free State Stadium on Sunday. Kick-off is at 15:30. Phunya Sele Sele currently sit fifth in the Absa Premierhip with 29 points and were able to conjure up a string of impressive results in their past five matches. Clinton Larsen’s men went into the international break fresh off a 2-1 Nedbank Cup victory over Free State Stars. If Larsen’s troops can keep their pre-break good form and win their match on Sunday, it will be the first

time Celtic have defeated Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chiefs – all in one season. Celtic will need to keep their form as high as possible if they are going to finish in the top four and they’re going to have to pick up points against teams like Chiefs – especially in Bloemfontein. When looking at Siwelele’s remaining nine matches, Larsen’s men will be favoured in seven of them. The only matches in which the “Free State Kings” will be underdogs will be against Chiefs, and their 27 April match up against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. Chiefs, who are sitting on the summit of the log with 47 points, have to

win Sunday’s battle if they entertain any thoughts of being crowned Absa Premiership champions in May. If they drop points, not only will they make things difficult for themselves, but they’ll be inviting more pressure from their old foes Orlando Pirates. Bucs are breathing down their necks on position two with 42 points; but they have a game in hand. Meanwhile, tickets for this match are available at Celtic selling points: Bloemfontein Celtic offices, Overland Chicken Central Park, Shell Garage Rocklands, Captain Dorego Rocklands, Sneakers Middestad, Stadium Inn Fast Food Willows, Overland Bottle Store Willows and RnB Motors Heidedal.
