It is DDay for region President of Safa Thabo Mofutsanyana’s seat challenged } Tladi Moloi SATURDAY is D-Day for the Safa Thabo Mofutsanyana Region. The region, which recently made headlines with some of the Local Football Association (LFA) members voting a motion of no confidence, is set to hold its annual general meeting (AGM). The AGM is scheduled for Saturday at the John Paul Centre, 2 km outside Bethlehem on the road to Paul Roux. It is known to many as Eden. It remains to be seen who will challenge the president’s hot seat, occupied by veteran Abiel Lethoba. He has been the president of the region since 2006. However, Thite Titi, chairperson of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Football Association,

sounds like a brave man and he might be interested in the seat. Titi has been pointed out many times with the recent call a fortnight ago that they wanted a region down. He had pointed out that they needed transformation in the region. Even though the date has been set for the AGM, there are

threats doing the rounds that the anticipated AGM might not take place as some of the LFA’s were not happy with the results of the AGMs at local level. A close source in the region revealed to Express Eastern Free State that there were two camps in the Thabo Mofutsanyana Region. “There is a camp with a

notorious name, ‘regime change’, which supports Titi, and they would love to see him guiding the region. “They sound very strong, but we are not sure if they will defeat the current structure. The other team is the one that supports the current president,” the source said. The current structure remains

quiet as it plays its cards close to its chest. Thokoa Mofokeng, the regional deputy chairperson, said so far they saw the complains from Nketoane and Phumelela. He said those were complaints because a dispute should be lodged with the electoral officer after the elections and added that would be final. Mofokeng said there were no disputes lodged with the electoral officers. “Most of the teams who have signed the dispute complained about the reports. “It was Safa’s decision to have elections,” he said. Mofokeng said they never received any mandate from the national office to postpone the elections.

Mad dash to win big prizes TJAMELA MOFOKENG (26), who hails from Ellit in Phuthaditjhaba, managed to collect groceries worth R1 455,53 in a competition which was held in the Setsing Super Spar on Monday. This competition of Super Spar, in conjunction with Unilever South Africa, has been running from May and it is expected to end in November. The excited Mofokeng was given only 30 seconds to collect groceries of the Knorrox, Knorr and Robertsons brands. Even though he collected mostly soup, he said he was happy with the competition and

added that he was going to use that for his aunt’s catering company. “I am happy with everything that I managed to collect. I did not expect to win, but God gave me the prize,” he said. Mofokeng said the competition was fair, but the time was not enough. In order to qualify for the competition, customers have to buy one product of the Knorrox, Knorr or Robertsons brand and drop the entry in the box in store. Deon Cronje, the Spar’s manager, said winners would be announced at the end of every month with

the winner being expected to push the trolley on the third of the next month. He said they had about 1 000 entries and out of that only one winner was given a chance to push the trolley and take what he wanted. “This was the first winner and I can tell you that it was interesting. One needs to be quick to collect more items,” he said. He said they would love to see more entries and added that the more people buy, the bigger the chances were to win. ) Visit our website and Facebook page to view the video of the event.

GRACE MOKOENA (37), who works for the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, is a rich woman, but allegedly collected money from desperate people in need of employment. She illegally collected R73 500. It is alleged that Mokoena, who hails from Elite Section, Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa, collected about R700 each from 105 people to whom she had promised different jobs within the municipality. The collection started in 2012, but thus far not even one of the people who had paid the money had received a job. Mokoena was saved by the Phuthaditjhaba Police from the angry people who wanted their money back. Sgt Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, said she had been arrested at the Setsing Crescent Mall where she had been kept in detention and safe from the angry victims last Tuesday. She appeared before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Thursday facing charges of corruption and seven counts of fraud. She is expected to re-appear in the same court on Friday for bail application. Mophiring said it was alleged by

victims that they had given her R700 each to purchase jobs for them in the municipality. “She would then take the money to another person who would organise jobs for those who had paid. “They also handed over copies of their IDs and CVs. But, unfortunately, since 2012 to date nothing had come up,” he said. Mophiring said the victims had met Mokoena in Setsing. She was allegedly looking for more people who wanted work, but used another official’s name. “They approached her asking for their money back, but she could not give it back. The victims allege they are in possession of a list of 105 names of people claiming to have paid and none of them have been employed. Maluti-a-Phofung confirmed that the suspect worked for the municipality and that they had registered a case against her,” he said. ) Please visit our facebook page for comment on the story. Body of unknown man found on farm A TRANSNET employee discovered the body of an unknown man in his 30s at the Breedal Farm near a railway line in Harrismith. He was found with multiple injuries to the head and body. Sgt Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, said the unknown man was certified as dead by ambulance personnel.

“The deceased was found on Friday. He was wearing brown trousers, a jacket and black boots. “A case of murder is under investigation. “For more information the next-of-kin or family can call Lt Simon Mabuya of the Harrismith Detective Services on 058-6241600 (office hours) or 083-474-7083 (after hours),” he said.

THE Harmony Academy team celebrated after they had won the provincial finals last year.

Harmony very successful THE Harmony High School from Virginia in the Free State has been the most successful team in the history of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, winning R2,2 million in prize money in the last three years. They go into the regional playoffs in the Free State leg of the 2013 competition on 15 June as defending provincial champions, having won all of their matches at the cluster level and are looking good to advance to the next round of the competition for the fourth year in a row. Harmony were the 2010 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Free State provincial champions and runners-up at the national finals that year, netting the school R700 000. In 2011 they went all the way winning the national title which meant they took home the R1 million first prize, while last year they were the Free State provincial champions and came fourth at the national finals walking away with R500 000. The provincial

finals will start in July with the finals happening in September. An amount of R2,2 million was spent on buses, sports kits, equipment (including that for under-privileged schools in their area), upgrading of their sports fields, computers, overhead projectors and other educational equipment. Hector Mokhali, the team’s manager, said the cluster games had been tough this year, but they were pleased to be through to the next level. “Marematlou Secondary and Reatlehile Secondary in particular were well prepared and had quality defenders,” he said. Harmony’s results in the cluster games were: Mamello Secondary School (won 4-0), Marematlou Secondary School (won 2-0), Reatlehile Secondary School (won 2-0) and Meloding Secondary School (won 4-0). Mokhali said he had a young team this year and most of the players were from the 2011 u.16 team, but, fortunately, there were 6 players who had been in the competi-

tion last year. He said he hoped that the combination of youth and experience would work well. All the players in the current squad are part of the Harmony Sports Academy funded by the Harmony Mine in Virginia.

As far as preparations were concerned, Mokhali said they were busy building the team and trying to get the combinations right. “The players are still trying to become used to my coaching style,” he said. He said most

schools were afraid to play against them. “We invite schools to come and play against us, but sometimes they don’t pitch, so a temporary solution has been to play against the Vodacom and Castle League teams in our area,” he said.
