Uproar over ‘snoring’
Listeners lash out at presenter on social media } Tladi Moloi PHUTHADITJHABA. – The woes of the troubled Qwaqwa community radio station, Qwaqwa Radio, continue. The station has hit the headlines again, for all the wrong reasons. In the latest scandal to rock the station, veteran presenter Charles Lekesi was allegedly heard snoring on live radio after falling asleep while presenting a show from 06:00 on Saturday, 4 April. Lekesi was also allegedly drunk when he showed up to present the Hlwaya Tsebe show, which deals with family values. Several listeners took to various social networks to voice their displeasure at this turn of events. According to angry listeners, the show started an hour late, with the first sign of trouble being the out-dated recording of a preacher played to welcome the listeners. One of the listeners, who asked that they not be named out of fear of victimisation, told Express Eastern Free State that he was awake at the time when the presenter started the show. “He played a song after the preaching. After the song the radio was quiet. I thought the electricity had gone off. “I was shocked when I heard him snoring. We were forced to listen to that for about 35 minutes, until Nontokozo Tshabalala came on at 07:00 to read the news.” Dibuseng Peleha was called in to save the radio from more shame. Peleha then took over the show, while fuming listeners took to social media where they voiced different views about the incident. Some even went to the extent of demanding an Annual General Meeting (AGM) be held, as they claimed that the station had lost its purpose and value. According to some comments, the station has not had an AGM since the controversial elective AGM that was held in March 2013. That AGM was preceded by financial maladministration allegations and was followed by the dismissal of over ten presenters and newsreaders.

When contacted for comment a defiant Lekesi dismissed the allegations, saying he was not at work on that day. “It is not true that I slept during the show. I was not even at work that day. I don’t even know who was doing the show that day,” Lekesi said. He said maybe people had made those comments based on the knowledge that he was supposed to have been on air at that time. McDonald Mokoena (32) was arrested and charged with arson for burning down half of the shopping centre in which the radio station is situated. He was declared a state patient

Striker laid to rest
} Tladi Moloi KIMBERLEY. – Hundreds of mourners from different sporting codes gathered at Vergenoeg in Kimberley to pay last tribute to the late Free State Stars’ striker, Richard Henyekane, who had died in a car accident a week ago. The “Kimberley Express”, as he was nicknamed, was laid to rest in the ABC Cemetery in Galeshewe on Saturday (11/04). The former Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns striker passed away in the early hours of Tuesday (07/04) after the car he was driving had collided head-on with an oncoming truck on the N5, just outside Kestell en route to Bethlehem from Qwaqwa. The four other occupants of the car were identified as Paul Mofokeng (26), Nthabiseng Motsoetsoe (20), Ayanda Matete (20) and Mpho Moloi (18). Prior to the funeral, an emotional memorial service was held in the Bethlehem Town Hall on Thursday (09/04). At the service, Stars’ captain, Paulos Masehe, said although Henyekane was now in God’s hands, he would always remain in their hearts. “After the Amazulu game (over the weekend in Durban), he was the one who was telling me that we should fight. God took him at a time when we needed his experience to score goals and take us out of the relegation zone. Let’s dedicate all the remaining games to

Andrew Kanyaza, Henyekane family spokesperson, said the family had asked the team to fight and win their remaining games. “We will rejoice and forget the pain if you fight out of the relegation zone. Mike (Mokoena team chairperson and owner), you have done a good job by bringing our son to your team,” he said. Rantsi Mokoena, the managing director of the team, said he would like to send his condolences to the other families. “You will never understand the pain we are going through. But time heals all wounds,” he said. Mokoena said there was no way that any of the people who had been in the car could have
survived. “That was one of the most horrific accidents. We lost Lesly Manyathela, Thomas Madigage, Gift Leremi and others in the same way. “All those players died in an accident in the early hours of the morning,” he said. He urged the players to stop driving at night. Kinnah Phiri, the team mentor, said it was very difficult to find words to express his sorrow. “We lost a good player. He was a good player and very obedient at training. He was a player I believed in and relied on,” he said. Phiri said he had not slept since Henyekane’s death. “He left us when everyone in the team needed him,” Phiri lamented.
THE Evangelistic Association of Bethlehem and Bohlokong did not “steal” electricity from the Dihlabeng Municipality to present its Easter Crusade in a tent church next to the new community hall in Bohlokong. Several “anointed speakers” were involved in presenting the theme of the crusade, Turning the situation around: Salvation, healing, prophecy, breakthrough and deliverance. Vrede Dairy Project ‘here to stay’
• SALE • SALE • SALE •
THE Vrede Dairy Project is here to stay, Mosebenzi Zwane, Free State Economic Development MEC, said. Zwane recently told members of the Free State Legislature the project would make R20 million profit in the next three years. Last year the project, which is linked to the Gupta family and has
allegedly cost tax payers R570 million, was shifted to the Free State Development Corporation (FDC). Zwane, a former Agriculture MEC, told the newspaper the project was currently yielding R750 000 per month. Zwane said the project had about 70 cattle which were being milked every ten minutes. “The project has 20 permanent
employees at the moment,” Zwane explained. He said the project aimed to hire 600 permanent employees in the next three years. Zwane also reiterated that grabbing land and illegally occupying it from farm owners would not be sustainable in the long run. “In 1913 the people who stole
land from us had a plan and we should not be driven by anger when we deal with this issue. “We need the land to feed our people, not to score political points,” said Zwane. His comments came after the EFF had called on the government to expedite the process of land restitution. Meanwhile DA leader in the
legislature, Roy Jankielsohn, said Zimbabwe was looming in South Africa. “Zimbabwe looms on South Africa’s doorstep as a symbol of how both the politicisation of, and failure to manage, land issues negatively affect food security, employment, poverty and ultimately political stability,” Jankielsohn said.

Programme empowers graduates } Tladi Moloi PHUTHADITJHABA. – Prince Nyamate (23), a BCom General Management graduate, is adamant that he would be in a position to secure any job in line with his qualification after a six-month training programme offered by the Tshepong Bridging Programme. The 2015 Tshepong Bridging Programme is an innovative initiative funded by the Accounting and Finance Services Seta (Fasset) and enables graduates with an NQF6 Commerce qualification access to employment. A total of 25 learners will be trained on the SAQA-registered Generic Management qualification, Pastel, as well as Work Readiness modules. Nyamate, who hails from Slovo Park in Qwaqwa, completed his degree in 2013 at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus. He said since then he had been applying for jobs, but failed most of the interviews that he had gone to. “I am happy with the Tshepong Programme. We are failing interviews because we do not have the practical experience and Tshepong is going to help us with this. I am sure after six months I will be in a position to get any job that comes my way,” Nyamate said. Nyamate spoke to Express Eastern Free State during the Tshepong Bridging Programme opening ceremony at the UFS’s Qwaqwa Campus last week Wednesday (08/04). Cecilia Hattingh, the project co-ordinator, said they were going to give training to the 25 students who had degrees in Financial Managament.
FROM the left are Marian Mathot, Cecilia Hattingh, Tshepong Bridging Programme project coordinator, Prof. Prakash Naidoo, principal at the University of the Free State (UFS), Qwaqwa Campus, Nicole Exley, Tshepong Bridging Programme project administrator, and Su Lise, moderator, during the Tshepong Bridging Programme opening ceremony at the UFS’s Qwaqwa Campus last week Wednesday (08/04). Photo: Tladi Moloi “We are going to assist the students by giving them work-readiness skills. This includes skills like project management, telephone skills, leadership and communication. These are things that you don’t have when you leave university. We just want them to be one step ahead of anybody else with a BCom qualification,” Hattingh said.
She said they were hoping to give the students confidence at the end of the programme. “We will show them how to draw up a curriculum vitae, to prepare for interviews and how to approach a company,” she said. Prof. Prakash Naidoo, the principal at the UFS’s Qwaqwa Campus, said he was excited about
the programme. He added it would assist the students in getting the skills that they had not acquired at university. “We know that we can only get finance skills from the work environment. So, Tshepong has come on board and offered those skills to the students free of charge,” Naidoo said.
He said the most exciting thing was that after the programme most of the students would be placed in jobs. “That is a plus for them. You know that jobs are difficult to find. With the skills they will be receiving, I am positive that they will be appointed by some companies,” Naidoo concluded.

Learners are invited to enter THE Free State Department of Education appeals to learners from gr. 8 to gr. 11 and teachers to participate in the iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History competition. The competition aims to promote the Freedom Charter ideals which the late Luthuli fought for. Inaugurated in 2005, the competition has been named after Luthuli, former president of the ANC, Nobel Prize laureate and educationist. The competition will afford the participants a chance to review the progress South Africa has made as a nation in building a better and more united nation as well as strengthening democracy. This year learners are given topics centred on the commemoration of the Freedom Charter which marks 60 years since its drafting and adoption by antiapartheid activists. The participants are encouraged to research the history of Albert Luthuli and heroines of the past within their locality and not concentrate on those whose efforts and contributions are already known in the public. Entrants can choose one of the following
topics: 1. Freedom, democracy and the history of my school: How my school experienced apartheid and the changes since the advent of democracy in 1994; 2. Socio-political biography of local hero or heroine in my community: What motivation did they find in the Freedom Charter; 3. Life story of a former student leader in the 1980’s: How the idealism of the Freedom Charter guided them; 4. Gender activist in my community who participated in the women’s unity movement of the 1980s: How ideals of the Freedom Charter sustained their struggle 5. A local hero or heroine who participated in the worker struggle of the 1980s: What did the maxim “There shall be work and security” mean for the labour movement. The competition closes on 29 April. The Free State winners, ten learners and two teachers will represent the province at the national final to be held from 2 to 5 October. Learners challenged IN the biggest initiative of its kind, SuperSport is launching the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge to commemorate its tenth year. The challenge is a nationwide event targeting children of ten and 11 years old in South Africa’s 18 000 primary schools. The fittest primary school per province will compete for the title with the grand prize being a R1,1-million all-purpose, allweather multi-use sports court to be built at the winning school. The nine provincial winners will each receive R10 000 worth of sports equipment and a physical education package worth R40 000. The primary objective of the challenge is to reinforce the instruction of curriculumoriented physical education and to promote physical activity in all schools. Let’s Play coaching teams will target various schools per day to run the Physical Education
Challenge. The fittest learners per school will compete, after which the top ten schools per province will qualify for the provincial semifinal, leading to an overall provincial winner. The final will take place on Let’s Play’s tenth birthday on 5 November. The obstacle course challenge is designed to accommodate both boys and girls and will be standardised at every competing school. It includes football slalom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles, rope pull and an agility drill; all of which are completed in a matter of minutes. While activity is the central focus of the challenge, it will also draw attention to two major social issues among youngsters: doping and bullying. A parallel campaign to end violence against children will be supported by Unicef, the children’s rights and emergency relief organisation.

Maluti needs a miracle

PHUTHADITJHABA. – It will take a miracle to save Maluti FET College FC from being relegated to the ABC Motsepe League. However, with five games remaining their head coach, Jonny Mafereka, still believes they can win all their remaining games and stay in the National First Division (NFD). Surprisingly, their former head coach Morena Ramorebudi,
} Tladi Moloi BETHLEHEM. – With eight games left in the Free State leg of the South African Football Association’s ABC Motsepe League, the Super Eagles from Bethlehem have lost their concentration again. Eagles, who have been on top of the league for the better part of the season, have dropped to the second spot after their
who is now with African Warriors, also said they would survive. “They won’t be relegated. They just have to win all the remaining games. They are a strong team with quality players,” he said. He said this after their 4-2 victory against the struggling Maluti at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Qwaqwa on Saturday (11/04). Ramorebudi said they had beaten them because they had known
what to expect. “Other teams will struggle to beat them, if they go out and do what they did against us. They will be playing in the same league next year,” he said. Maluti are rooted at the bottom of the log table with 15 points in 25 games. They are 11 points behind Witbank Spurs and one point behind Garankuwa United. Mathematically, Maluti will have to win
all their remaining games to stay in the league while on the other hand they should pray for Spurs to lose their remaining five games. However, the college boys could see their relegation sealed on Saturday (18/04) when they go on a contest against the red-hot Golden Arrows who are on a campaign to bounce back to the Absa Premier League. The Durban-based outfit are top of the log table with 46 points in 24

games. They are just one point ahead of Jomo Cosmos who are knocking at their door. Mafereka said they would fight until the last league game. “We did not play well as a team today. We just have to prepare the boys mentally so that they can start to believe in themselves,” he said. Maluti will have to beat Arrows at home, Cosmos away, Garankuwa at home, Spurs away and Baroka FC at home. is a two-horse race as a team in the third spot – FC Hunters – is nine points away from the log leaders. However, the good news for Eagles is that they will still have a chance to redeem themselves when they play against Roses in Bohlokong.
