Mangaung Book Fair spreads awareness about local work
} Jabulani Dlamini THE first ever Mangaung Book Fair has been described as the perfect platform for local authors to exhibit and sell their work. The fair, held at the Bloem Plaza
on Friday, saw 15 writers showcasing their work which range from poetry anthologies and collections to self-help books. Trevor Mokeyane, one of the organisers, said the event was held as a service as most local authors
were self-published and there was not a lot of awareness of their presence. “We did it for the love of books and writing,” he said. He said some of the authors have even been invited to take part in
overseas events, but not many people were aware of this and one of their aims was to change this. Matshidiso Taleng, one of the authors whose work was exhibited at the fair, said the event was most welcome.
“We managed to interact (with other authors) and got to learn more about each other’s work. “I hope the event is the first of many to come as many people who were not aware of our existence are now aware,” she said.

‘A man raped my dog’ } Sidwell Guduka “I AM traumatised,” says Maseleke Masiba. Masiba, who resides at Thabe Street in Rocklands, Bloemfontein, claims a man tortured and sexually abused her dog out of lust at about 23:00 on Wednesday. She says her dog M-Jay – that she treats like one of her children – is traumatised after an unknown man sneaked into the yard and raped her. The 63-year-old woman heard a commotion outside her home and upon further investigation discovered a man “in a very compromising position” with the dog. “I was asleep when I was awakened by the dogs barking. I went outside to investigate, however, there was nothing wrong or unusual. Then I went back into the house. After a few minutes the dogs started barking again,” Masiba told Express. “This time around I decided not to go outside to investigate. I looked out of the window and could not believe what I saw. There was a naked, bare-footed man raping my dog. “It felt like I was dreaming. I was too terrified to scream,” she says. “If I had spent more than five minutes outside, I suspect that man would have raped me instead. He forced himself onto the dog like a vulture. She was so hematomaed [sic] on the back and so bloody that she looked
like her whole body had been put through garbage disposal. That whole scenerio has traumatised me,” she added. Masiba, who lives in the house with her underaged granddaughter, says she told one of her daughters to call the police. “I took out my cellphone in an attempt to phone the police, but I could not even recall 10111 (the crime stop number). I was so frightened and shaking so much. “It was the first time in my life I have witnessed such a heinous act. “The cops responded quickly but the man had already fled the scene when they arrived. I told them what had happened. Nonetheless, they said there was nothing they could do to help me as the case involved an animal and not a human. They advised me to report the matter to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).” Masiba says she now lives in fear. “I’m hurting about what that man did to M-Jay. I love this dog and her three puppies. They are my friends. I cook real food for them every day and spice it up. If I had a gun I would have shot him for raping my dog. He should be arrested for bestiality. Maybe next time he will come back and rape me. Who knows? I don’t feel safe anymore. I become scared when the dogs bark at night. That man should get his own dog and make her his wife. He must leave my dogs alone.” Marie-Louise McKensey, SPCA inspector, says: “The incident was reported to us. We are doing our investigations at the moment.” ) Keep in touch at Sidwell.Guduka@volksblad.com or sidwelele on Twitter.

Jali releases new gospel album } Sidwell Guduka BABALWA JALI, an up-andcoming singer, has just released another gospel album that will endear her to gospel lovers across the country. Just like her debut album, Lina Mandla released in 2011, this latest album is probably what the gospel market has been waiting for for quite some time, because gospel albums are not released as frequently as, say, house music these days. The 24-year-old singer said her debut album didn’t do well in the market because she did not have a producer at the time. But she hopes the new album, titled Babalwa Jali Victory, will sell like hot cakes. “The album was released in March this year and it is a must-have for gospel music lovers. It is a grooving album that caters for everyone,” Jali told Express. “I urge people to buy my music, because all the songs on my latest CD have a strong message. Listening to my music will bring change, hope and joy into their lives. “The word of God says you must rejoice in the name of the Lord. We praise the Lord in different ways: by dancing, by singing, by lifting our hands up. I praise God through gospel songs. It is a God-given talent,” she said. The Sterkspruit-born singer, who now stays at Namibia in Bloemfontein, appeared on the popular SABC 2 gospel show Gospel Time in July 2011. Jali said after getting a televi-
sion platform she was sure that launching a music career would be a walkover. But when she released her first album, she discovered that there was no glamour, only lots of hard work, in the music industry. “I did not expect to struggle with my first album. Things were really not happening the way they were supposed to. I struggled to make ends meet as an artist. It was difficult to work without a producer, because I had to do everything on my own, including marketing my music. Now that I have a producer, I think this album will do well.” The talented muso said she started singing as a teenager in Sunday school and she realised that she could make a career out of singing. “I love singing. Music is my passion. I look up to well established acts like Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Rebecca Malope. I grew up listing to Hlengiwe. She is a true worshipper. “My long-term goal is to see myself as a world-renowned artist in the next five years. I also want to have a huge fan base. Through hard work and determination I believe I can make it big in the industry.” Among her countless performances, Jali was invited to dazzle fans at the 2011 Free State Music Awards and 2012 Miss Orlando Pirates in Bloemfontein. Her album consists of ten songs such as Victory, Ntate ke Mang, Ngiyakuthanda and many others. To buy her music, place your order on her Facebook page or contact her producer, Mbuyisele Wittes, on 078-539-8714.

Many pitfalls in music } Ayanda Roda MANY people strive to be in the music business because they have singing talent and believe that by putting their signature on the dotted line, their dreams will come true. Their desire to be one of the industry’s heavyweight artists keeps them knocking on recording labels’ doors. Most want to be in the music industry for a good reason: the love of music. But there are interesting factors that emerge as soon as an artist gets offered a recording deal. Recording labels do not invest in someone’s musical career for charity. These labels are not there to make someone a star for nothing. You must have heard of artists who claim that their labels have ill-treated them and that they were ripped off. One of the interesting

questions might be: Do artists know what they are getting themselves into when they sign a recording contract? Music contracts are very important to an artist’s career. A contract can be as short as one page or as long as 60 pages, depending on the nature of the agreement between the artist and record label. Contracts are fairly simple, but quite often artists sign contracts without understanding what the words mean and what they are expected to deliver. Contracts vary with artists, but do not expect a newcomer to get a better deal than a bigselling artist. A recording label will never offer the best deals to breaking artists. The signing fee that the label will give to the artist as an upfront royalty payment, packaging of the project, marketing and promotional costs are repayable by an artist from their overall royalties. This means that the artist will not get any royalties for their album until the label has reclaimed the money it invested in the artist’s project. For an up-and-coming artist, what usually happens is that the label pays for all the project expenses, including recording the project, producers, session artists, the mastering engineer, the packaging of the project and all promotional expenses. The money that the label has spent on the project is payable by the artist. As part of the agreement between the two parties, the artist will not receive any royalties until the company has regenerated the sum it spent on the project. Let us say the record label in good faith spends R5 000 on an artist’s project and the artist’s album only generates R3 500. If this happens, the artist is in trouble. What they (record companies) will usually do, is keep the artist on board until they come up with an album that eventually covers what the artist owes the label. ) Part two of this article will be published next week. ) Roda is chairperson of the Association of Independent Recording Companies (AIRCO) and director of Danduza Productions.

Be willing to give as well } Past. Willie Norris ACTS 20:35: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” These words written by the Apostle Paul still live in the hearts of men today. Those who aspire to imitate his deed and live the words of Christ. There are so many weak people who need help and assistance, both physically and spiritually. It is the task of the church to be helpful in both instances. The physical is quick and easy to do as it is a practical way of assistance whereby you do something that a person can see and feel. The spiritual assistance is normally not so easy. Words are spoken and the recipient of these words decides whether to accept or refuse this kind of help. Those who listen will mostly end up seeing the good results. Yet the one who doubts and refuses, ends up with
more sorrow and grief. How sad that many will not accept this kind of assistance. Then we read that giving to others is more blessed than receiving from them. Again there is something you yourself must experience. You cannot merely hope to get the true meaning of the word. If we all could do that by giving and not expect anything in return, we would be a blessed people. Unfortunately greed overtakes the lives of people. It overtakes them to such an extent that they will throw all their morals overboard. So be able to receive from others. Others have sold themselves just to receive. Selling their own souls for the sake of money.

TopTV porn channel a disgrace TSHIDI PHOLOANA, Bloemfontein: I FOUND recent media reports that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has granted TopTV a licence to operate three porn channels to be very disturbing and lacking in morals. South Africa has in recent times seen a spike in rape incidents where the victims were innocent children, mothers and grandmothers. These incidents have caused a lot of debates in our neighbouring countries and across the entire globe at an alarming rate. It is alleged that the three porn channels will be aired from 20:00 and 05:00 to prevent children to access it during the day. TopTV hopes the successful porn application will turn around the business’ fortunes as it is currently under business rescue and wants to make a profit. Well, the message that I get from the successful application and a green light to air pornography; it has been driven by nothing else but profit. I believe the TopTV management did not take into account the negative impact of televising pornographic material which might augment the level of violence against women.

It is for these reasons that the civil society associations need to act against such humiliating decisions with the aim of making a profit. Although Icasa allegedly indicated that there was no law of general application prohibiting the production and distribution of adult content in the republic, only the production and distribution of child pornography is expressly prohibited by law. One way or the other, children will still access these material, as much as they do on their cell phone and the internet, now adding three pornographic channels will be just a bonus to them. The South African government is trying and doing all it can to prevent rapes or women abuse by imposing harsh sentences on the perpetrators. Now with additional channels to access, pornography will also increase the “appetite” of the rapists and shrink chances to eradicate such incidents. I strongly condemn this decision.
The Zuma-Gupta ties should be investigated REVEREND THEUNIS BOTHA, Christian Democratic Party leader: WHILE passing the buck on who is to be blamed for the Gupta debacle which is still in top gear, one thing remains very clear: The ties between the Guptas and Pres. Jacob Zuma need to be thoroughly investigated. What has become certain from the foreign press, is that it is not so much the incident itself which is damaging South Africa’s image, but the
relationship between Zuma and the Guptas, which is presented as fact, also in the Indian press. One of the questions that answers are needed for is: What precise skills does Zuma’s nephew, Khulubuse Zuma, possess that qualify him to serve on the boards of several Gupta companies? It is high time that an investigation casts light on the perception that Zuma’s political influence is up for hire or, that he be cleared, if innocent.
Probe into neglected farm implements ROY JANKIELSOHN, Free State DA spokesperson for Agriculture: THE DA will submit questions to the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Free State about a large number of tractors and farm implements worth millions, gathering dust at the Vrede showgrounds. The implements and tractors were donated to the province by the national government for distribution to various beneficiaries within the Free State. These implements and tractors have been gathering dust for a year at the Vrede showgrounds and are already showing signs of neglect. I visited the grounds last week Thursday to inspect the the implements and tractors. I found 24 Massey Ferguson Tractors (628’s and 290’s), 6 trailers (6 ton), 16 planters, 8 ploughs, and about 46 other pieces of tractor-drawn farm equipment. All the implements and tractors are new. These could already have been utilized to assist farmers to plant crops in the last planting season. At this stage they are however being neglected due to the lack
of maintenance. It is also alleged that at least one tractor has been loaned out to an individual for private use. Both emerging and commercial farmers in the Free State are badly in need of such equipmement. It is an absolutely absurd that these implements and tractors are wasting away. The DA will submit questions to the MEC in the legilature in order to get more clarity on this matter. In view of the large numbers of farm implements and tractors standing at the Vrede showgrounds, I will ask the MEC how many of each type of implement and tractor are meant to be standing at this terrain, what the value of the tractors and implements at this terrain is and who the targeted beneficiaries to receive each of these implements and tractors are. I will also ask what items will each of the respective targetted beneficiaries receive, when will the tractors and implements be delivered to the respective targetted beneficiaries and whether any of these items have been loaned out to any individuals for use; and if so, what are the relevant details?
ANCYL condemns landing at base ANC YOUTH LEAGUE NATIONAL TASK TEAM (ANCYL NTT): THE ANC Youth League National Task Team (ANCYL NTT) joins South Africans in expressing outrage at the invasion of our country by guests attending the Gupta wedding in Sun City. We seek answers from the ANC-led government on how it is that national security was breached at a national key point in such a callous manner, disrespecting the people and laws of our country. The landing of a civilian
aircraft at the Waterkloof Air Force Base, a national key point, eluding all the obligatory customs and security, checks is unacceptable and undermines South Africa and its people. The ANCYL NTT welcomes the fact that Comrade Pres. Jacob Zuma found it appropriate not to attend the wedding of people who had invaded our soil. We call upon all progressive South Africans, particularly ANC leaders and deployees in government, who were invited to the wedding, to follow Pres. Zuma’s example as their attendance will be viewed as condoning this
security breach. We welcome the investigation by the Department of International Relations. This act of gross negligence and misconduct cannot go unpunished and those responsible must be criminally prosecuted and dismissed. It is our belief that all individuals involved in this saga should be exposed to face the full wrath of the law. We join the ANC in calling for an explanation on this matter and for heads to roll for those who allowed that plane to land at our Waterkloof Air Force Base, a national key point.

Motsepe millions to uplift many } Tladi Moloi THE Motsepe Foundation has made available R12 million for the Free State out of the R500 million which has been allocated to the country by the foundation for the next three to five years. As announced earlier, the Motsepe Foundation will allocate R500 million over the next three to five years throughout the country to initiate and support long-term sustainable development and upliftment projects in partnership with local residents and their communities. According to Patrice Motsepe, the chairperson and founder of the foundation, the Thabo Mofutsanyana District and Mangaung Metro will share the donated millions with each receiving R6 million. He announced this when he was addressing hundreds of people who had gathered at the Tshiya Resource Centre in Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa, last Tuesday. The R500 million will be split like this: R100 million each for education, women co-operatives and businesses, youth co-operatives, SME’s and businesses, sports, music and arts, in partnership with churches, traditional authorities, workers and other charitable and community development organisations. Motsepe said they wanted to build the Thabo Mofutsanyana Motsepe Foundation Forum in Qwaqwa. He added that they would work with them to make sure that they reduced poverty and unemployment in the district. “If you check the level of poverty and unemployment, you realise the money was not enough because there are too many people. So we took that R6 million and invited other business people to help,” he said. He said they wanted their forum and the one which is going to be built to meet and chat on how to allocate the money which was made available for the district. “We are going to help all the provinces in the country. This campaign gives South African learners an opportunity to celebrate, and at the same time review, the progress we as a nation has made in building a better and more united South Africa and in the strengthening of our democracy. The celebration and commemoration of key national and international days in education is an important aspect of the struggle against apartheid oppression. While the commemoration of the lives of key individuals who contributed greatly to shaping our young democracy and teaching about them in our classrooms, we also look to oral history to unearth those untold stories that hitherto have received little recognition. The DBE, in partnership with South African History Online, has invited secondary school learners from gr. 8 to gr. 11 to participate in the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Competition. The competition, inaugurated in 2005, is named after Albert John Luthuli, Nobel Prize laureate, educationist and former president-general of the ANC. This competition forms part of the department’s contribution to the strengthening of the teaching and learning of History in schools. This national event will be preceded by provincial elimination rounds in which learners will submit written portfolios on their oral history projects, followed by oral presentations of their work. Play your part in cup } Sidwell Guduka THE Carling Black Label Cup gives fans the opportunity to Be the Champion Coach once again this year as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs meet at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on 27 July in their showpiece encounter. This year’s edition of the popular pre-season tournament was launched at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg on Monday. Both chairmen of the Soweto giants, Dr Irvin Khosa of Pirates and Mr Kaizer Motaung of Chiefs, attended the event. “The Carling Black Label Cup has been a tremendous success not just for the two clubs involved and the fans who have taken the concept to the heart, but also South Africa as a whole. It has shown us to be a country of innovation and outstanding achievement,” Motaung told Express. The benchmark for success was set high in this campaign and required massive public involvement for it to work. I’m delighted to say that we have managed to meet the technical requirements of the campaign, and that the involvement of the public has been incredible,” he said. On the other hand, Khosa suggested that the success of the campaign was the reason for football fans to celebrate. “I believe anytime Pirates and Chiefs meet, there will be massive interest from the public. However, of greater interest is the fact that supporters have a once in a lifetime opportunity to pick the teams which is incredible for them. “We saw the entries rise last year from our first campaign and
we expect them to rise again this year. In a South African football context it doesn’t get any bigger than the Soweto Derby and we have given the supporters that and the added excitement of being able to select the team they want to see on the field.” This year’s format will be much the same as in the two previous editions, except for one significant change – the substitution mechanism. During the first half of the match, fans will again be asked to vote for a substitution, with the difference this time around being that fans will be asked to vote for a player they would like to bring on as a substitute, rather than take off, as has been the case in previous years. “Our concept has been hugely welcomed by the South African football fraternity as it affords consumers a unique opportunity to realise their dreams and ‘Be the Champion Coach’. We did not want to tinker with the vision too much, but have changed the substitution mechanism around this year to add a new dimension based on the consumer’s needs,” Vijay Govindsamy, Carling Black Label’s general manager, said. “The growth in fan participation and engagement that we saw from year one to year two has been phenomenal and we are excited to see what 2013 will bring. We are the largest beer brand in the country and have partnered with the two biggest brands in South African football. It is a fantastic match.” ) Express’s sports editor, Sidwell Guduka, attended the launch courtesy of Carling Black Label.
