Bursaries awarded

Students can now realise dreams } Sidwell Guduka “WE thank you, Eskom, for helping us financially and helping our families as well.” Those words were spoken by Kabelo April (18) after receiving a bursary from Eskom at the Philip Sanders Resort near Bloemfontein on Saturday. The soft-spoken Virginia lad, together with 19 other students, were awarded bursaries by the electricity giant to pursue their dreams of higher learning. This is in line with the company’s strategic commitment to contribute to the socio-economic development of South Africa. All bursary recipients were top 20 Free State matriculants in 2012. They are already enrolled at different institutions across the country. “We promise that we’ll work hard and make sure that the energy you invested in us will not go to waste. To my fellow students, we have the support we need and we should not allow any room for error. My advice to you all is that patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success,” April said as he thanked Eskom on behalf of his fellow students. “I feel honoured to be awarded such a huge bursary by such a huge company. It is such a great honour for me. I was happy when I received a call from the Department of Education to say that Eskom would be funding my studies,” said April, who is studying towards a National Diploma in Building at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein. The awards ceremony coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which has been transformed into the African Union (AU) – a day that seeks to promote an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena. On awarding the bursaries, Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba, said: “Our celebration today is two-fold. While we celebrate Eskom’s 90 years of existence this year, we

would also like to commend our African heads of state for pushing forward the African Renaissance agenda. “Today’s occasion is therefore in line with the AU’s strategic objective set out a little over a decade ago, to accelerate a forward-looking agenda that promotes a peaceful and advanced continent for all.” The minister commended Eskom for celebrating this important milestone by ploughing back to the communities and focusing their attention on the youth. “As we look back at what Eskom has achieved over the years, albeit some challenges, through this bursary programme we want to reiterate our commitment to the empowerment of our youth by ensuring that they are armed with a powerful tool which is education. We believe that it is only with education that our youth can make an impactful contribution to the socio-economic development of our country,” Gigaba said. He added that the future growth and economic viability of South Africa and its people depended to a large extent on the availability of sufficient and professionally qualified individuals. His sentiments were echoed by Eskom’s chairman, Zola Tsotsi, who said that for the past nine decades his company had been adding quality to the lives of South Africans and enabling the country’s economic growth. “The awarding of these bursaries is just one of the ways in which we make a difference in the communities in which we operate. “As a state-owned company, our performance is also measured by the overall value that we add to the lives of the public. “Our developmental mandate is about creating a foundation on which South Africa can grow, helping to transform the lives of a large percentage of the population that lives in poverty,” Tsotsi said. Tate Makgoe, MEC for Education in the Free State, thanked Eskom for awarding bursaries to deserving students.

Jansen to receive award } Sidwell Guduka

PROF. JONATHAN JANSEN, the vice-chancellor and rector of the University of the Free State (UFS), will receive the Education Africa Lifetime Achievement Award for Africa. According to the UFS, Jansen will be presented with the award at a gala dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York on Monday. The event is hosted in collaboration between Education Africa and Brand South Africa. Jansen will join an illustrious list of recipients, including Sir Bob Geldof, Sir Richard Branson and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Jansen said: “I am humbled by this award which I dedicate to the great teachers of our country, who under difficult conditions make our schools work for children of the poor; they are the real heroes of education.” The Education Africa Lifetime Achievement Award for Africa is a highly regarded recognition on the world stage, awarded to individuals who focus the attention of the global community on the obstacles some of the poorest African nations face. “He (Jansen) is a pioneering South African educator who is successfully transforming what was once a bastion of apartheid-era segregation and ideology into one of his country’s most inclusive and dynamic institutions of higher learning,” the organisers said in a statement. This award will add to the multiple international and local achievements and awards Jansen had received over the past years. He, most recently, received the Alice and Clifford Spendlove Prize in Social Justice, Diplomacy and Tolerance from the University of California and membership of the Laureate Chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi Interna-

tional Honour Society in Education. He joins an exclusive membership of 293, which includes Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jean Piaget and George Washington Carver. Meanwhile, one of UFS’s council members will also receive an award with Jansen at the same ceremony. Ndaba Ntsele, also the executive chairman of Pamodzi Gold Limited and president of the South African Black Business Council, will receive the Education Africa Allegiance Award. The award is given to persons for their steadfast support of the organisation (Education Africa) over many years.

THERE is a saying that goes: When two elephants fight, it is the grass that gets trampled. This will be the case when the Toyota Free State Cheetahs lock horns with the Vodacom Blue Bulls at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The sides meet in an explosive Super Rugby encounter that has all the ingredients of a humdinger with the kick-off scheduled for 19:10. Cheetahs, who are sitting second on the domestic conference with 45 points after 13 matches, must go for the jugular if they entertain any hopes of beating the Bulls. Since they became a franchise in 2006, Naka Drotské’s men have never beaten the Bulls in Super Rugby, with their best effort a 23-25 loss in Bloemfontein in 2011. Earlier this year, they also came close at Loftus Versfeld before losing 20-26. Tickets for the main stand cost R80, and for the grandstand R60 (adults) and R20 (students and children). If you buy your ticket before Friday you receive 10% discount. Tickets are available from the ticket office in the Free State Stadium. . To win tickets to the match turn to p 7.

Report bullying or regret it forever MY name is Thabile Orefile Moleko and I was born in Mahikeng on 15 January 1994. My family and I arrived in Bloemfontein in 1997 and I attended a primary school and two high schools in the City of Roses. I regard my school career as dismal. I was bullied from the age of seven until the age of 15. The minute I walked through the gates of the primary school I attended, my persona was misunderstood. For some reason I was seen as different from my classmates. The teachers treated me differently as though I was disabled or mad. My gr. 1 teacher called me a failure in front of my mother because I had come from an Afrikaans nursery school and I struggled to understand English and grasp things such as the alphabet. I would swap letters around while I was learning how to read and write. The gr. 1 teacher convinced my mother that I needed to go to an occupational therapist which I did for a few sessions and then stopped as I suppose it became clear to the therapist that there was nothing wrong with me. My gr. 1 teacher created a platform that allowed my classmates to start bullying me. She treated me unfairly when there was a quarrel and I would always be “at fault” no matter the situation. From then on, I never had a voice. My second name and my surname loosely translate to “He gave us trouble” and the black girls would always tease me about that.

I was bullied throughout my primary school career. I used to attend after-day care and I remember in gr. 5 during break there was a couple of girls that was teasing me and ended up throwing popcorn in my face. I reported it at home and my mother got involved in the situation. Little did I know it would make things worse. At school there were cliques and the one clique that made my life a living hell was the clique of black girls and they influenced other cliques to be against me. They succeeded in doing so because for seven years I never knew what friendship meant. I was always desolate and isolated and it took a catastrophe for me to be befriended by two girls. In high school, which was bigger than the primary school, all those girls who didn’t like me influenced the new girls at the school and the bullying became more intense. I fell into a deep depression. I felt worthless and I started practising self-mutilation and eventually attempted to commit suicide but I never succeeded. In that depression, I drowned myself in books and sport and I excelled both academically and in sport. I played netball, then later started swimming and the anger within those girls became more intense. They would pass rude comments such as “since when does Thabile get 80% for mathematics”. I had a goal to swim at the world’s largest open-water swimming race, the Midmar Mile, and

My view

Thabile Orefile Moleko Aspirant journalist when “the clique” found out, they laughed at me and told me I would never make it. I trained really hard and went for time trials. I wanted to prove them wrong so badly but I didn’t succeed, I didn’t make the time at the time trials. The next morning the girls were lining the corridors laughing at me saying I should never attempt doing things that are “beyond me”. My hunger to achieve this goal was deepened and I carried on swimming. Through my desolation I focused more on myself and started writing poetry and eventually fell in love with it. My cousin encouraged me to share my poetry in front of the school. I did so and the school was rather shocked that I was capable of writing poetry. They liked my poetry but still hated the girl behind the pencil. In gr. 9 my English teacher criticized my writing, even trying to crush my dream of becoming an author and a journalist. Her harsh criticism didn’t stop me from writing. In 2009, the bullying was at an all-time high and I started becoming resistant to people. I just wanted to be on my own and

eventually became so sick from all the stress that I collapsed in front of my classmates, but the teasing and being laughed at just continued. Towards the end of 2009, I recall crying so hard and being so deeply hurt as my identity now became a joke within the public’s eye. I was now being cyber-bullied. A group was created about me on the social network Facebook entitled I know of someone that’s really annoying. I didn’t know how to deal with that intense pain so I went to the principal, but he didn’t want to intervene because he said it would just make matters worse. In 2010 I changed schools, not because I was running away, but I wanted to feel how it felt to be happy in an academic environment and to go to school like any other child without fearing anything. My goal was partially achieved as some of the kids at the new school tried to bully me but they did not succeed as I had already been through far worse at my previous school. My experiences at school led to my passion for writing and in 2010 an article I had written was published on the front page of the Express newspaper. I also became a published author with three of my poems being published in a joint anthology, ViaGrapevine,

which was compiled by a French author, Brigitte Poirson, and Phinithi Nate IV Ntelekoa. I also recited two of my poems on Kovsie FM and one of the poems was published in ViaGrapevine in 2013. I swam at the provincial aquatics championships in 2010 and 2011. In 2011 and 2012, I swam the Midmar Mile and completed both races and was even among the medal winners. I am sharing my story because of the recent incident at Eunice High School which involved violence. Most teenagers go through bullying and don’t have anyone to talk to so they resort to self-mutilation, substance abuse, even commit suicide. Throughout my school career I wasn’t aware that I’m being bullied, I didn’t even know it is a crime. It saddens me that girls and boys go through a similar situation as I have been through and even worse. Bullying is a crime if you have been bullied, act now. Don’t procrastinate, you will live to regret it. I would like to study Media Studies and Journalism or Philosophy. My goal is to become a writer and my dream is to leave a legacy. *Visit our Facebook page, Facebook.com/express.news03, to comment on this story or go to our webiste www.expressnews.co.za *Story edited for length.

Township art will dazzle visitors A TRULY South African experience awaits festivalgoers on 6 July when a couple of community members of Makgothi Street in Batho open their doors for an art experience. With a rich history that includes contributing to the formation of the ANC in 1912, Batho is an ideal location to host the inaugural event. It is opposite the Batho Police Station. The Township Arts Experience will provide a stage for indigenous talent to display their works of art in the township. Visitors will be able to look at indigenous arts and craft as they walk from house to house to view the creativity while being entertained with music and dance in the street. Special performances and various intercultural foods will make the day more interesting. “We are hoping to foster an artistic culture that connects the township and the city in one creative bubble. I consider this to be a shared experience through which social cohesion can be created,” says Roxanne Konco, marketing manager of the Vryfestival. The project is built on collaboration between artists and curators, home-owners and community organisers and visitors. The support of organisations such as Hansa Pilsener, Itec, Absa and Sovereign is making this event possible. Free bus transport will be provided from the Kovsie campus to the township. The bus will depart at 10:30 and 12:30 from the taxi rank. For more information and reservation, call Konco on 079-915-4528. Parking is available at the Sehunelo Secondary School for people who use their own vehicles.

Vuyo made big contribution } Pastor Willie Norris THERE have been tributes and mourning on a national level for various famous personalities in the past like politicians, celebrities and more. But what I have experienced with the death of the late Vuyo Mbuli is very different. I get the sense of a particular intensity in the mourning of Mbuli’s death. He was almost like a personal, close family member to each person in South Africa. Could it be because he was

“personally” in all the homes of families every morning? I am not sure. Perhaps it was because of these home visits every morning with the people. Yes, now I know why his death is mourned and feels so personal. He was a “family member” of these South Africans. Wow, what a man, what a man. Douglas Colbert, my brotherin-law, asked me: “Is Vuyo going to get a state funeral?” This is an indication of what South Africans thought of him. And many will share this

sentiment if they are asked about it. Vuyo played his part in contributing to nation building in South Africa. He will be remembered for who he was. He always had an inviting

smile and the character of a statesman. His wife and children, family members and friends and all South Africans take comfort in his contribution as a top-class journalist who distinguished himself as one of the best in our nation. May the Holy Spirit comfort you all. John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Teachers want permanent jobs } Sidwell Guduka ADULT BASIC EDUCATION AND TRAINING (Abet) teachers on Friday marched to the Department of Education’s offices in Bloemfontein to demand permanent jobs with full benefits. The educators also demanded that the MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, should provide them with funds as per the Abet Act 52 of 2000. They also wanted educators in AET to be given a rural allowance. In a five-page memorandum the teachers further demanded that human resources give them feedback regarding outstanding payment. They also asked for their payslips to be delivered before pay day. The memorandum was handed over to the acting head of the department (HOD), Motseki Monnane. “I’ve been asked to receive your memorandum by the honourable MEC. May I just indicate to you that we have listened very carefully to your grievances. From our side I can assure you that we’ll make sure that the MEC receives your memorandum as soon as possible. With regards to your request, we’ll indicate to the union what the way forward will be,” Monnane said after he had accepted the memorandum. Podile Makgothi, president of the South African Abet Educators Union, said they wanted the department to treat Abet teachers with the same respect given to permanent educators in mainstream schools.

‘Abet educators are as qualified as their col leagues in the main stream schools. So they should be treated with respect . . .,’ – Podile Makgothi

“Abet educators are as qualified as their colleagues in the mainstream schools. So they should be treated with respect like teachers from those schools,” Makgothi told Express. He said he was happy with the

way in which the marchers had conducted themselves during the march. “We are glad that the march went as planned. It was a very peaceful march. “We are happy Monnane received

our memorandum on behalf of the MEC. We look forward to hearing from him (the MEC) soon. “If we don’t get a response within the specified time we’ll march again.” The educators demanded a

positive response from Makgoe within 21 days. “Like I’ve indicated, the memorandum is directed to the MEC. He will hopefully respond within the time frame as indicated by the union,” Monnane said.

College has courses for variety of careers A CAREER in business today requires a different set of skills to what it did a decade ago. While there will always be a place for traditional qualifications such as BCom and Marketing, what the South African business landscape is looking for is individuals with strong leadership capabilities that can move comfortably and competently between all areas – finance, marketing and management of an organisation. “Education is not static and although there are other BCom degrees on offer, our research showed that there was a gap for a qualification that covered all these skills,” said Nadine Kruger of the

Higher Education Department at Boston City Campus & Business College. “The Boston BCom Management Marketing degree is a bachelor’s degree that equips students with the knowledge and skills for career opportunities in the fields of business, management and marketing, focusing on digital marketing, social media and brand management, all buzzwords in the marketing career fields.” The course content as well as the flexibility it offers individuals is making this degree an increasingly popular choice with students because regardless of whether the economy is experiencing growth or not, qualified entrepreneurs, marketers and managers are always needed. With the global and local economy still in the midst of one of its most challenging periods this is even more relevant. The BCom Management Marketing degree has been created to produce the kind of managers and entrepreneurs South Africa needs to make companies more productive and push them to explore new opportunities and ways of doing business. An additional consequence of these tough and changing economic times is that

prospective students, both undergraduate and post-graduate, are seeking out alternative means to complete their qualifications aside from them following the traditional full-time university route. Whether it is because they need to work while studying in order to fund their education, or because they are too far from a suitable university, or because they are already in a career, but want to further or change their skills set or acquire a formal qualification, there are students that need the flexibility of studying part time. To alleviate the downside of this, Boston offers their degree with flexible study modes. Often a lack of support and guidance is associated with part-time studies, but these are needed to successfully complete a degree. Boston provides students with the best of both worlds, distance or parttime tertiary education, but with access to critical back up and help. There are students who take on distance education thinking they will be able to balance their studying, work and home commitments only to find that it is not as easy as planned, and that while course material is generally of a high

standard they require some form of interaction with lecturers or course facilitators in order to achieve the successful outcome they require. “At Boston this is achieved through an education platform that is enriched by electronic video and online interactivity, which is supported by a countrywide network of tuition centres. “These tuition centres provide access to computers, online assessments, technologybased training material, electronic library facilities, examination venues and administrative services. “All students must select a tuition centre and are encouraged to make daily use of the facilities for the duration of their degree studies,” explained Kruger. Furthermore, the college’s system of pacing studies interspersed with assessments has seen tertiary degree students working continuously and doing very well. Boston also conducts courtesy calls to learners to check on how they are managing with their studies and its dedicated call centre consultants deal with setting up appointments and online queries about course material. The Boston BCom Management Marketing degree includes important aspects of business,

management and marketing including business management, financial management, entrepreneurship, company law, economics, computer literacy, marketing/brand management, industrial psychology and project management. “There is no doubt that the South African economy and business world is ready for managers with such diverse skills and expertise as is covered in this course and graduates will be well equipped to become marketing and/or brand managers, account managers, public relations officers, media or advertising consultants and even store, department, business unit or general managers,” concluded Kruger. Applications are now open for mid-year registrations and close on 12 July. The final registration date is on 19 July. Students for 2014 can also apply now. The Boston City Campus & Business College offers over 80 dynamic study options at branches nationwide. Unisa degrees and media studies are also available at selected branches. AFTER the success of Apartheid ek gaan jou boks volume 1, talented poet Skietreker, has released volume 2 of this well-received poem collection. The book is a collection of 50 poems all written in Afrikaans. Asked why he chose to write in Afrikaans, Skietreker, who was born Richard Reitumetse Seape, simply says he fell in love with the language in 2008 and has not looked back since. Seape says the rather catchy title is derived from the common enemy that we shared in the past and unfortunately this enemy is still with us today. “When we talk about freedom we are all supposed to be living it but this is not the case,” says the 27-year-old Thaba Nchu native. He says he uses the word apartheid as a metaphor for all the ills happening in society today. “Although the country has largely moved on from the damage that apartheid and its related injustices has caused, you can still see pockets of racism, especially in the Free State,” he said. Skietreker told Express he started writing poetry in 2004 and the following year he performed at the Macufe (Mangaung African Cultural Festival). ) Visit our website to see Skietreker perform. Illegal shacks demolished

NEWS

} Sidwell Guduka

THE Mangaung Metro Municipality has demolished “illegal shacks” at Freedom Square Extension in Bloemfontein. According to Qondile Khedama, the communications manager, the move by his municipality was to prevent residents from staying in informal settlements. They had occupied a piece of municipal land illegally. The affected squatters have been moved to Namibia Square. “The purpose of this relocation is to address the problem of residents who are occupying non-residential sites such as floodlines, road reserves and parks,” Khedama told Express. “This will specifically focus on Namibia Extension as the first step towards the bigger plan for all subsequent areas included in the Relocation Programme of the Human Settlements Directorate in the city. “The relocation plan is geared towards achieving sustainable human settlements where people have access to basic services and housing,” he said. “This is a continuous programme that will be implemented in all the areas where people are in non-residential areas. “This programme will assist the municipality to achieve its objectives and also ensure that there is order and that the residents of the Mangaung Metro have access to sustainable human settlements,” he added. Khedama said they had a series of meetings with residents, asking them to

remove their shacks from non-residential areas, but the municipality’s pleas fell on deaf ears. “We had no option but to apply for a court order to remove those shacks. We continue to engage the affected people,” he said.
