Granny pain free after operation } Tladi Moloi

MASEABATA THUNTSA (73), a grandmother who did not want to go to hospital to have her breast operated on, finally underwent the operation. The grandmother who hails from the Marakong village in Qwaqwa, said she now felt like a young girl again and the pain was no more. “I am happy, I am still alive. I thought I would die,” she said with a smile. Thuntsa recently went under the knife at the Elizabeth Ross Hospital in Qwaqwa. She said she could not withstand the pain anymore when she

decided to go for the operation. “They had to get rid of the breast which had been troubling me for years now. I feel like a school girl who has just passed matric. “I am back doing what I like the most which are washing clothes, cleaning my house and tending to my garden,” she said. Thuntsa said she would like to thank Express Eastern Free State (Express EFS) for exposing her problem to the people. “If it were not for you I would still have been in pain. You kept on coming and encouraging me to go to hospital and finally it happened. I even had a chance to

meet with the late MEC for Health, Fezi Ngubentombi, because of Express EFS,” she said. “It was painful that day and I only had one thing on my mind: ‘death’. My grandson requested me to go to hospital, but I refused. “He called my daughter-in-law who called the ambulance for me, but I locked myself in the other room and refused to open up.” She said she went to the hospital with her daughter-in- law the second day and she had said: “God, please help and save me”. – Visit Express EFS’s Facebook page to give us your thoughts about the story.

Water no longer a problem

AN “ocean” of water in the Bohlokong Local Municipality, which was posing a danger to children, is no more. Express Eastern Free State reported about the water at the house on the corner of Dieta and Motaung Street in Bohlokong which was a hidden danger to the children of the area late in Janu-

ary, and Sophie Jacobs, Ward 16 councillor, promised that they would attend to the problem. She said: “We would be demolishing the house soon as we are going to build an RDP house there.” Express EFS can confirm that stage one of the work has taken place and the house has been demolished.

NOW: The concrete has been put in place at the demolished house on the corner of Dieta and Motaung Street in Bohlokong.

ANDRIES SITHOLE, husband of the late Goodness Sithole who was killed in a hitand-run car accident on the N5 road a fortnight ago, wants the driver who killed his wife behind bars. A fuming Redge Rudman, manager at Telkom in Bethlehem, where Goodness worked, also wants justice to take its course. A heartbroken Sithole says a case was registered at the Bethlehem Police Station, but thus far they have heard nothing from the police. He says he went to the station last Wednesday to find out about the latest developments in the case, but he was told that the investigating officer was on leave for two weeks. According to Sithole, his wife was killed at night by a speeding car which hit her on the shoulder of the road. “We were driving together and we got a puncture. I tried to change the tyre, but the jack I used was weak. I called my wife’s brother, who was in Qwaqwa. “He arrived on the scene and while we were busy, my wife insisted that she would go home to prepare food for us. “After she had crossed the road, a car came past and she stood against her brother’s car to avoid it, but the car went straight to her and she died on the spot,” he says. Sithole says the driver of the car never stopped to check what had happened. Rudman said Goodness was a very helpful and hardworking employee. He said he was worried about not having heard anything from the police yet. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, confirmed the accident. He said the police were busy with the investigation. “We cannot let it go just like that,” he said. Mophiring said the police call on the driver who knows that he hit someone on the N5 to report to the Bethlehem Police Station.

Truth about events in CAR unclear SOUTH AFRICAN soldiers ran out of ammunition during a bloody battle in Bangui that left 13 of them dead and 27 injured. Before they did, though, the increasingly desperate soldiers fired rocket-propelled grenades on groups of rebels who “stormed” them. Many of the rebels were “only children”, an SA National Defence Force (SANDF) source close to the military’s controversial Central African Republic (CAR) deployment told City Press’ sister newspaper, Rapport. “The rebels stormed our soldiers in groups, not at all like trained soldiers, and many of them were only children,” the source revealed. The rebels’ age horrified South African soldiers, he added. According to him, some of the most traumatised soldiers – all members of 1 Parachute Battalion – returned to their base earlier than the rest of their companions after the fighting in Bangui died down on that Sunday. Another anonymous source, a soldier who survived the battle, has revealed what happened on Saturday, 23 March, and in the weeks leading up to the firefight. His version of events is in sharp contrast to that offered by Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who says the media and military experts have lied about what happened during the battle. The soldier confirmed what the defence force source said, and their version was backed up by foreign correspondents based in Bangui. The soldier said some of the rebels he saw during the battle were “very, very young”. After rebels took Bangui, news agency Reuters published photos of these young soldiers, described as “Seleka fighters”. Reuters also confirmed to City Press that there are now many rebel soldiers in Bangui who are clearly very young. Daniel Flynn of Reuters said: “Our correspondent in Bangui says there are many soldiers who look as if they are 14, 15 or, at most, 16 years old. “In addition, some of them are on drugs or under the influence of alcohol.”

City Press questioned the new CAR leadership’s spokesperson, Eric Massi, by telephone about the presence of child soldiers in the Seleka forces. Massi said: “This is something we are definitely opposed to, but it’s a difficult situation because we are assisted by several other groups in our fight against the Bozize regime. “Those children are therefore not necessarily Seleka soldiers,” he said from Paris. According to him, the new CAR government of self-appointed president, Michel Djotodia, will focus on the problem of child soldiers. “We still have to determine what the situation is, but it’s not something we support. Children belong in school,” Massi said. The Doctors Without Borders mission of Sylvain Groulx in Bangui confirmed to City Press that child soldiers are patrolling the streets of the country’s capital. Groulx said: “The situation is improving every day, but there are still problems with the supply of electricity and water.” Neither the South African Ministry of Defence nor the SANDF responded to repeated requests for comment throughout the week. The South African soldier who related the following story asked to remain anonymous, even requesting that details of his age and rank be omitted to protect his identity. He said: “Our mission assignments changed constantly. First we were told we were only there to train CAR soldiers, then we heard we had to protect South African property, and finally we were ordered to protect civilians in and around Bangui.” The soldier also said his unit was upset about the lack of air support and that they ran out of ammunition during the battle, and did not receive further supplies. “No one came to help us. No one came to give us new ammunition,” he said. He was part of a patrol unit involved in heavy fighting about 50 km from the South African base, from as early as Friday afternoon (22 March), against rebel forces as well as deserters from the CAR forces. “There were very many of them, but we were only about 25 soldiers. It was very bad.”

Brig Gen Xolani Mabanga, SA National Defence Force spokesperson, this week denied allegations that CAR troops turned against their South African allies, but the soldier says that is exactly what happened. “I still greeted some of the guys earlier. We knew each other . . . then, on Friday, they suddenly opened fire on us with RPG-7s. They were still in CAR defence force uniforms, so it was very confusing.” There was also a great deal of unhappiness, the soldier said, about food and stipends. “From our deployment on 2 January to the end of the mission, we had to make do with rat packs (ration packs), because there was never a kitchen set up,” he said. “It was terrible, because you can’t live for so long on that stuff.” No proper kitchen had been set up despite numerous promises, he claimed. The soldiers, who were first deployed in January, were also all very upset, because they did not receive the payment that was promised to them, he said. ) This is the minister of defence’s version of events, outlined on Thursday during a ceremony at Pretoria’s Waterkloof Airforce Base. Mapisa-Nqakula told the dead soldiers’ distraught relatives, who were there to formally receive the soldiers’ bodies, that the men had been on a “goodwill” mission and had died like heroes. Speaking mostly in isiXhosa, she said: “We must never allow our enemy to divide us on our purpose of deploying our children to other countries. This was not the first deployment, and it will not be the last one. We will also deploy other children to another country. What is important now is how we honour our children.” She stuck to the official government and military line, saying the soldiers were only in the CAR to train that country’s military. “South Africa and its government had no other interests in the CAR except the agreement to train soldiers from the CAR. “I am raising this because, now, the issue is: ‘What business interests were they protecting in the CAR?’

“Mothers and fathers, I am the one who signed off on that operation.” The minister also vehemently denied that there had been a clash of interests between the military and President Jacob Zuma about the deployment. She said there was no truth to reports that some soldiers wanted to return home, even before the battle. “They fought without retreating. Those were not cowards. Your children are not cowards and that’s something that should make you very proud.” She said that one day the story would be told of how many rebels – the unofficial estimate is more than 600 – died during the battle, which lasted for about 13 hours. “Your children, at least from the pictures I’ve seen, were very young boys, but they were lions and they are heroes of our country. Those were your children, but, also, they had sworn that, as soldiers, ‘we will serve with pride,’” said Mapisa-Nqakula, flanked by Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla and senior defence chiefs. She repeatedly lauded the fallen soldiers as heroes and not “cowards” who died with wounds in their backs. “In the black community, we grew up with the adage that says a man’s wound should not be on his back.” Pointing to her forehead, she said: “A man’s wound should be here. We do not hear that your children died with wounds on their backs because they were running away. I’m trying to say, painful as it is, I want you to always remain with proud memories of your children.” She also urged families not to stop their children from enlisting in the military, saying the country had to be defended. Mapisa-Nqakula talked about her visit to the defence force’s training base in the CAR on 13 January, a few weeks after fresh troops had been deployed there. The soldiers – whom she fondly referred to as “my children” – were happy to be deployed to the CAR and to have an opportunity to use the skills they learned during training, she said. – City Press

‘Parents of soldiers, you are not forsaken’

HOW do you console someone who has lost a loved one? What do you say to a parent whose child has just died? Words fail me as they would anyone else who is a mere mortal. Nevertheless, we stutter and mutter a few words of comfort in the hope that the bereaved family hears us. Losing a loved one puts one in a state of mental confusion. The families of 13 South African soldiers who were killed in the line of duty in fighting with Seleka rebels on the outskirts of Bangui, Central African Republic (CAR), are now in such a state after losing their children through death. Corporals Mokgadi Darius Seakamela and Ntebaleng Andrew Mogorosi, and Lance Corporals Daniel Sello Molara and Lukas Mohapi Tsheke, were among those killed on Sunday, 24 March 24. The riflemen killed were Lesego Maxwell Hertzog, Zamani Jim Mxhosana, Xolani Dlamini, Vusumzi Joseph Ngaleka, Karabo Edwin Matsheka, Khomotso Paul Msenga, Maleisane Samuel Thulo, Motsamai William Bojane and Thabiso Anthon Phirimana. All of those killed were members of One Parachute Battalion (Parabats) from Bloemfontein. Here is my lame attempt at consoling the parents of the deceased soldiers and their families: As parent, I cannot imagine the pain you are going through. It is my wish that the Lord takes me before he takes my

My view

child. But our God, the merciful God, can sometimes come through and talk to us in the strangest of ways. He is talking to you (parents of fallen parabats) and your families, though for the life of me I have no idea what He is saying. It will become clearer with time. To some of you, the pain that you are feeling now may be exacerbated by the fact that this might not be the first child you have lost. Curse God if you want, He will forgive you because you are human. Curse and thank Him at the same time. He gave you wonderful gifts in the form of children, but has taken them away from you. When the sad news was broken to you, you have probably shed some tears. That is fine too, because sometimes there is nothing like a good cry to make you feel better. Crying is cathartic. Jesus wept on the cross and said: “My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” You are probably asking the same question. But He has not forsaken you. He has put you through the tests that other mortals cannot pass. You have passed these tests and we know you will go through this fiery

Sidwell Guduka Express Journalist test and survive. The strain of taking this pain may be too much to some of you. Again, as they say, He never gives you a burden that you will not be able to carry. It is daunting, hard and energy-sapping, but only you can carry this burden. May you have the strength and the iron will to do so. Those dead soldiers (probably some of them were parents) that you are about to bury, came not from you but through you, to quote Khalil Gibran. You were but a conduit. This is a blessing that some people yearn for all their lives, but they never get to experience the joy of being parents. If you wake up in the middle of the night startled, so be it, let these emotions go through. Our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. We share in your grief, but we cannot take away the pain. Just know that we are with you in thought and in prayer. May the Almighty God bless you and your families.

Golf day aids charity THE annual Shoprite Checkers Ofm Chip 4 Charity was held at the Bloemfontein Golf Club recently. This was the tenth year that this popular charity golf event took place with over R855 210,89 raised for charity in the past nine years. About 186 golfers graced the extravaganza this year and helped Ofm raise R120 000 which has been donated to Child and Family Welfare Bloemfontein, Childline Free State and the Shiloh Zoe Foundation (Moses Basket). The Shoprite Checkers Ofm Chip 4 Charity has become a highlight on several corporate calendars and attracts the biggest names in business and in central South Africa. With over R50 000 in prizes, a R10 000 prize for a hole-in-one on the fourth hole and a trophy for the best wet hole, it is not surprising that

the day had already sold out two weeks before the event. Once again, this year the organisers had a full morning and afternoon with 186 players and wet holes at 15 of the 18 hole course. The four-ball of FNB’s Private Clients department was the winning team for 2013 with 96 points while M&H Packaging walked away with the prize for the best wet hole. Shoprite Checkers and Ofm agree that the day would not have been successful if it were not for the contributions from their partners in the day, the players and the various service providers. The Kimberley instalment of the Shoprite Checkers Chip 4 Charity is up next on 12 April at the Kimberley Golf Club. Comedy series back on TV THE fifth season of the multiple award-winning comedy series 30 Rock returned to SABC3 last night. This hilarious comedy is told through the comedic voice of Emmy and Golden Globe winner Tina Fey (SNL) as variety show producer Liz Lemon and features Emmy and Golden Globe winner Alec Baldwin (The Departed) as top network executive Jack Donaghy and Tracy Morgan (The Tracy Morgan Show) as Tracy Jordan, the unpredictable star of Lemon’s hit variety show, TGS with Tracy Jordan. Lemon constantly has her hands full, juggling corporate interference from Donaghy and off-thehandle star antics from Jordan, all while attempting to salvage her own personal life. Also rounding off the cast are Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney, the co-star of TGS, Scott Adsit as the variety show’s producer Pete Hornberger, Jack McBrayer as Kenneth, the overeager and effortlessly endearing NBC page, Judah Friedlander as Frank, the sardonic slacker on the writing staff, Katrina Bowden as Lemon’s young, flighty assistant, Cerie, and Keith Powell as Toofer, the sophisticated yet sarcastic, Harvard-alumni writer. Season five continues with Liz in a relationship with Carol (Matt Damon), a man she met in the episode I Do Do, and Jack practicing to be and then being a father. Jack finally marries the woman he chose in I Do Do, but an error in the wedding certificate leads to shocking results. Jack meets with Kabletown’s boss, Hank Hooper (Ken Howard), who acts rather like Kenneth, and meets his competition in his granddaughter, Kaylee Hooper (Chloë Grace Moretz). Meanwhile, Tracy also becomes a father and finally gets an EGOT (”E” standing for “Emmy”, “G” for “Grammy”, “O” Oscar”, and “T” for “Tony”). However, the pressure of being an award-winning celebrity leads Tracy to nearly bring TGS to can-

CSA paid tribute to Werner Faul

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) on Tuesday paid tribute to Werner Faul, a pioneering figure of women’s cricket in South Africa, who passed away on Monday after a protracted illness. “Although he had been in poor health for a considerable period of time, his passing has come as a shock to the cricket fraternity,” commented Max Jordaan, CSA senior cricket manager. “Werner was a pioneer in the promotion and integration of women cricketers within CSA. During his

leadership women’s cricket was an independent entity still under the banner of the South African Women’s Cricket Association (SAWCA). At that time the contribution from the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) to women’s cricket was no more than a grant of R50 000. “Despite this nominal amount he navigated the South African women’s team into a formidable unit. Under his leadership, this squad participated in the 2000 International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC) World

Cup Tournament in New Zealand. The South African team reached the semi-finals, their highest ranking in Women’s World Cricket to date. “He engineered the integration process, ensuring that women’s cricket became formally accepted as an associate member of CSA. Today the national women’s team is sponsored by Momentum. “CSA acknowledges his contribution and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family during this period of bereavement,” Jordaan said.

Larsen backs his boys } Sidwell Guduka

ACTION from last year’s Kay Motsepe Cup national finals in Bloemfontein.

Schools set to battle it out

THE richest high school football tournament in Africa, the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, is about to get under way. The deadline to enter the competition was last week and the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa) is counting the last entries. Over 2 500 schools are expected to compete for a slice of the R4,3 million in prize money. The winning school will receive R1 million, second place R600 000, third place R500 000 and fourth place R400 000. In addition, the nine provincial winners each collect R100 000. However, no cash is paid to the winning schools, but the schools identify their needs and these projects are funded. The Eletsa High School from the North West is a good example of how schools can benefit from their prize money. The school won R500 000 in 2010 and spent the money on drilling a bore hole giving the school water, restoring electricity, upgrading classrooms, they purchased computers and erected perimeter fencing to keep the learner safe.

Other schools have bought buses, built sports fields and sports combo’s, purchased school equipment and sports kit, just to name a few. Nelspruit’s East High College of Excellence will be in action at this year’s tournament. The school won R600 000 for finishing as runners-up in the 2012 national finals, losing to the Transnet Safa School of Excellence in the final in Bloemfontein last year, and won a further R100 000 for finishing as the top school in Mpumalanga. The school has chosen to spend their winnings on finishing a block of extra classrooms they started two years ago. Abel Nkuna, manager of the team, explained that the school was a football academy based in Mpumalanga. This is their third year in the tournament. He says the team started training in January and the players are now starting to understand each other. “Most of last year’s players were in matric, so it’s a completely new squad,” he said. “We are looking forward to defending our provincial title and I am certain that we will

make it to the national finals, although it’s not going to be easy.” The team is not as strong as last year’s, but the coach and his technical team are working hard with them. “I am only worried about two opponents. Lowveld High School is in the same circuit as us, and whoever wins between us will represent the region at the provincial finals. If we do get to the provincials then we will probably come up against School of Excellence again. If we do, we will be ready.” The challenge about being based in Nelspruit, according to Nkuna, is that there are not many schools to play friendly matches against. “Most of the schools around us play more rugby and cricket than football. The only time we get to play serious friendly matches is against second division teams and those teams have tight schedules.” No East College boys have gone through to play in the Premier League yet, but eight of last year’s team will be going for trials at Bloemfontein Celtic in June.

IT is not always that a coach will be proud of his team despite a loss, but Clinton Larsen, Bloemfontein Celtic’s coach, was happy with his team’s performance against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday. The Free State giants went down 3-0 to Chiefs in their league match played at a packed Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. “I’m very happy with the way the guys performed today, but not with the result. It’s not every day that we get a 3-0 thumping at home. But I must say, in my opinion, the score-line was a bit flattering. We can’t wait to meet them again in two weeks’ time,” Larsen told reporters after the match. “There are a lot of positives we took out of this game. I feel that my players executed the game plan exceptionally well. We gave them problems with the space behind their fullbacks. Our plan was to neutralise their midfield which we did very well,” he said. Larsen praised Itumeleng Khune, Chiefs keeper, for a great performance he on the day. “Credit must go to Khune. He was exceptional in goal today. I think he made two or three world-class saves. With the quality keeper like that he always keeps you in the game and that’s exactly what he did. He tipped Lakay’s free kick out of the top corner and he dealt well with one or two shots from the box,” On the other hand Stuart Baxter, Chiefs coach, warned his players to not be complacent after Sunday’s win. Amakhosi now have one hand on the Absa Premiership trophy after opening a seven-point gap between themselves and secondplaced Orlando Pirates. “There is still a long, long way to go and it’s definitely a challenge,” he said. “Players should keep their eyes fixed firmly on the pathway and not the final destination. I’ll be doing whatever I can to keep their feet on the ground. They’ve done a good job so far this year but in certain games we have let things get ahead of us and it is a problem.”

Mokone eyes SA’s } Sidwell Guduka KHOTHATSO MOKONE is not a household name like Oscar Pistorius. But his impressive haul of medals, trophies and certificates prove that he is no slouch when it comes to track and road running. Mokone (24), a local freelance journalist and a drama student at the University of Free State (UOFS), is well known in the Free State for his exploits in athletics, middle-distance and half marathon races over the years. “I have spent a large part of my life running; since my high school days. People always say that I have dedicated my whole life to running,” he told Express. “It was not so pleasant when I started out because my high school teacher chose races for me. I had to run short distances, but I didn’t see my potential in such races. I enjoy track and middle distance running,” said a born-again runner, who is a member of Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Bloemfontein. Mokone’s passion for running might not have propelled him to great heights at national level, but he has made his mark in the Free State. In fact, his bedroom seems to be bursting with medals, trophies and certificates he has earned over the years. “At least I have the medals and trophies to show for what looks like a lifetime of running. I train very hard and distinguish myself at runs. My objective is to be the best recognised athlete in the country.” In 2007, Mokone competed in the Free State Schools Championships and came out third in the 1 500 m. He also did an 8 km run in cross-country for juniors where he got selected to compete at the South African Championships in Mpumalanga. “I did well there and was selected to represent South Africa in the Southern Region Cross Country Championships in Zambia. Before the main championships I participated in the Ethiopian Championships as we prepared for the event in Ethiopia in 2008. I was doing grade 12 at the moment. After passing my matric, I didn’t have money to further my studies. I spent the whole of 2009 kicking my heels at home while all my friends were in schools and universities. My involvement in athletics suffered as a result. In 2010 I got a sports bursary from UOFS and began to get my running on track. I enjoy working with my coach, DB Prinsloo. He has helped me to improve all aspects of my game. He is like a father figure to me.” Mokone, from Phelindaba in Bloemfontein, has been the Free State champion for 3000 m steeplechase since 2010. “I’m going to participate in the South African Championships (steeplechase) in Cape Town next week. From there I will be competing in the South African Student Championships in Durban a week later.”

Mzava has Larsen’s support for award BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC COACH CLINTON LARSEN is adamant that Limbikani Mzava has done enough this season to walk away with the Young Player of the Season Award. The Malawian-born defender, who is touted as a future star back home, spent the 2011-’12 season only training with the team as he was not registered. This season, however, the 19-year-old has grabbed the opportunity after making the cut and Larsen has nothing but praise for Mzava. “If anybody can show me another 19- or 20-yearold that is playing as consistently as Mzava then I would like to know who he is,” Larsen says. “Last year Ronwen Williams (of SuperSport United) won it, and rightly so. “This season, I can’t see any young player who is playing as consistently as Mzava both at international and club level. So I think he would deserve it,” he adds. Of the 21 league games played by Celtic this season, Mzava has started 14. He also started all four matches as Phunya Sele Sele won the Telkom Knockout. – Kickoff.com
