A MEMBER of Vatos Lagos, a notorious gang in Thabong, is set to re-appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (16/04) facing a murder charge. The accused, the 31-year-old Samuel Sello, also known as “Madondo”, first appeared on Tuesday, 31 March. The accused allegedly attacked and stabbed a fellow gang member, 51-year-old Malete Joseph Sehloho, also known as “Bricks”, during a fierce fight arising from an old grudge regarding a woman who had a love affair with both men. The altercation took place at the local Mzoba Tavern in Thabong on Saturday, 28 March. The victim reportedly died in the ambulance which was transporting him to a local hospital in Welkom. Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, spokesperson of the Thabong Police Station, said the deceased had sustained severe stab wounds during the attack involving the two gang members. The deceased had three wounds to the back and one each to the head and neck. Mokhuoane said the fight was apparently over an old grudge the two men had had regarding a woman which they both had a relationship with. According to Mokhuoane the tension seemed to have reached boiling point and the men began attacking each other with knives. “Sello came to the police station to open a case of assault causing grievous bodily harm against Sehloho,” said Mokhuoane. She said Sello had been arrested after police had received confirmation that the victim had died in the ambulance on his way to hospital.
THE National Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene’s decision to place the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality under administration has received the thumbs up from the DA in the Free State. Leona Kleynhans of the DA says last November the party wrote to Nene requesting him to intervene in the municipality. “When it became clear that the ANC-led municipal government was unable to meet their financial obligations towards Eskom, resulting in continuous threats by Eskom to cut the electricity supply; was unable to collect revenue from consumers; had received 13 consecutive disclaimer reports from the Auditor General; and that the municipality was also due to lose its equitable share allocation from national government as a result of persistent financial mismanagement and maladministration the minister was approached. “We welcome Nene’s brave approach, putting petty ANC party politics aside, and intervening in a manner that we hope would see financial order in the municipality restored so that the National Treasury can resume equitable share payments needed for the delivery of services and infrastructure development,” says Kleynhans.

Super high ten for talented young writer } Jabulani Dlamini REIKANTSE MANAKA is not an ordinary 10-year-old. Manaka, unlike her peers, would rather read and write during break at school than play. The result of this is that at her tender age, Manaka is already a published author whose book, High Ten for Reikantse, will be launched on Saturday. The 36-page offering is a collection of short stories and the book was a real team effort with some story ideas coming from Manaka’s 6-year-old sister Rorisang. With support from her teachers and classmates, the book became a team effort with classmates contributing the illustrations after the book had become a class assignment. Reikantse’s family members were all smiles when Express visited the family on Sunday. “I am happy, ecstatic and still amazed at what she has done to write a book at this age,” Teboho Manaka, Reikantse’s father says. Teboho says Reikantse is always writing
something but he never imagined it would actually become a book. The little girl’s mother, Matumelo, echoed her husband’s sentiments saying they can only thank God for having given her the talent to be able to do this at her age. “God must bless and keep her and give her more to be able to continue doing what she does,” Retshedisitswe Manaka, Reikantse’s aunt, says. In order to encourage others, Reikantse says kids must read and go to school in order to become clever. Asked what she wants to write about, Reikantse says she wants to write about what she has read. “I sometimes feel I want to write, but I don’t always have the time because I have homework. “When I grow up I want to write books about healthy food because it is better to be healthy than to be weak,” she says. Apart from writing, which she calls her first love, Reikantse also does speech and drama at school as well as public speaking. ) High Ten for Reikantse is published by OmoOle publishers and sells for R80. Revive boxing to aid community IN the 1970s and 1980s Welkom was a hub for boxing in South Africa, with the Western Holdings Mine boasting one of the best development stables ever, producing world-class pugilists. One of these were Daniel “Baby Cassius” Mapanya, undisputed former South African middleweight champion, who reigned supreme at the time. Others include stylish Peter “Byl” Mgojo and Jacob “Pretty Boy” Moyeye. Those who emerged from the development were absorbed by the mine and were employed. But presently, following the demise of the mines and related industries in the Lejweleputswa Region, we need the sporting fraternity more than ever. Facilities are few. Gang wars are ravaging our communities, as rival factions are killing one another like dogs over nonsensical disagreements. Sport as recreation and source of employment is generally dead, especially boxing. The few promotors who have survived, face an uncertain future. Declining spectator attendance, coupled with a lack of television coverage, threatens the already struggling sport. The unending controversies in Boxing South Africa as a federation, the disappearance of charismatic personalities and the martial arts that mix karate with boxing could be some of the reasons for the declining standards. The Free State administration invested money in boxing when it came into power in 1999. Boxing tournaments catering for both women and men were growing. Boxers were also featured at the annual Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe). However, the dream to grow the sport has gone up in smoke. Attendance was good in the past. The best boxers of that golden era were the late Charlie “Silver Assassin” Weir, Mapanya, Vuyani Bungu, Welcome “The Hawk” Ncita, Dingaan “The Rose” Thobela and Brian Mitchell. The contests featuring these legends were selling like hot cakes all over South Africa. Mapanya sold 200 tickets by himself. Thobela drew more than 5 000 spectators to his fights in the 1990s. It is sad today that excitement has subsided with the exit of that golden generation. In Thabong,
We also need a strong boxing board with men and women who are prepared to serve the sport . . . we had stables such as the Thabong Boxing Club, the Thusanong Boxing Club and the Royal Boxing Club. Those stables disbanded after the retirement of promotors like Jimmy Sehloho and the late Spider Manyaniso. Other exciting boxers to emerge from the Goldfields included the late Godfrey Nkate and his brother Kid Nkate, Billy Mohlabane, Mentor Ncheche, Jacob Motseki, Pitso Sesing, Shamba Mokone and Jacob Diraditsile. The national and provincial government need to embark on road shows and meet with boxing personalities in an effort to revive the sport. We also need a strong boxing board with men and women who are prepared to serve the sport, men and women who will not be there for their selfish and personal interests. During our time at high school, schools had their own boxing gyms. What has happed to the sport at school level? We really would have no reason to complain about the high unemployment rate. Look at Tiger Woods, who has never bothered to look for employment in his life. Floyd “Money-maker” Mayweather who never wakes up in the morning to queue for employment at the labour market. A good boxing and ice-skating facility in Constantia Road has been outsourced and converted into a truck repair and spares shop, yet we speak of our youth not being passionate. ) To comment on or express your views about the issue highlighted in the column, go to www.express-news.co.za. ) Express Goldfields & NFS welcomes anyone interested in contributing to the weekly column as. Top cop retires THE Thabong Police Station in Welkom has bid farewell to one of its core managers, Col. Deon Ernst Sevenster, whose service to the police spanned more than 30 years. A farewell function was held at the station on Tuesday (31/03). Ill-health had forced him into retirement, Sgt. Mamello Mokhuoane, spokesperson of the Thabong Police Station, said. Sevenster started his career as a constable in 1984, worked his way up the ranks from detective constable and was promoted to colonel in April 2010. He had been detective commander at Thabong since 2009 and was one of the managers who had helped build the station to reach the status of number one station in the country, a position it had retained for the last two years. Under his leadership the Thabong Detective Services had on numerous occasions gained first position on the performance chart on the level of Brigadier Station. “We made a good team and today Thabong is the best station because you believed in

SANBS needs South Africans to donate more blood THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has announced that it is faced with yet another difficulty regarding blood collections. This follows the unavailability of donors due to the Easter recess. Almost 40% of the blood collected ahead of the holiday is reportedly by donors from schools
and universities. “Due to the holidays we are unable to host these blood drives. This together with many people who also take a break, the blood stock levels are impacted significantly. “Currently, the blood stock at a national level is 1,5 days and in the Free State it is 1,8 days,” says Alta Pienaar, SANBS public
relations manager. “The SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival,” she says, further appealing for support from members of the public who meet the minimum blood donor
requirements, especially regular blood donors who may have missed a blood donation, to help boost supplies by committing to donating blood. In order to become a blood donor the person must meet the following requirements: ) weigh at least 50 kg ) be between the ages of 16 and 65
) lead a safe sexual lifestyle ) be in general good health; and ) consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient. If you wish to find out more on where to donate and more on becoming a donor, call 0800-119031 or email customerservice@sanbs.org.za or visit www.sanbs.org.za.

Sidewalks now gardens
TSHEDISO MOTOBATSI, Welkom:
RECENTLY a friend of mine was left R450 poorer after he had to pay a fine to the Matjhabeng Traffic Department to have his impounded vehicle released. His car was impounded after he had parked it on a sidewalk in front of a house that was turned into a business premises in the suburb of Doorn in Welkom. He parked it there after he had experienced mechanical problems. This was after he had tried unsucessfully to start up the engine. He did it in order not to cause disruption of the traffic flow or to inconvenience the owners of the business. When he went to fetch the car the next day he discovered the car had been impounded by traffic officers. This apparently happened after a telephone call was made by an attorney of the business owner to the city council complaining about the car being parked on the wellkept lawn on the sidewalk adjacent to the business premises. The owner of the vehicle had to pay R450 to cover the cost of the towing service. It so happens that property owners cultivate gardens on sidewalks which are rightly municipal land. The public are then prohibited from either walking or parking on the sidewalk. In my opinion it cannot be legal for individuals to claim a
I AM an African male in his 30’s and I uphold cultural values, especially Southern Sotho values. My opinion will not be based on culture and not on human rights because I will have to search and read further in order to be precise. However, I believe those upholding positive morality will agree with me to respect the human body. I am referring to photos published in Express Goldfields & Northern Free State (18 March), captioned as “flexibility and strength” of Gaelebale Molehe. What was depicted in those pictures, is disrespectful to the women concerned. To be clear, the first and second pictures show the underwear of the said daughter, sister and cousin of someone. I do not know if permission was granted by herself or anyone to have those pictures published in the newspaper. I feel it is not correct. Young males about to become fathers and grandfathers “of thought” read this newspaper. Pictures like these can only serve to undermine the values they hold regarding the female body. I believe the great daughters, women and mothers “of thought” also uttered the “sies” expression my wife did

when she saw these pictures. I also know that players in a netball match go through certain motions, but is it really necessary to publish pictures showing them in unflattering positions? Surely you could have used other pictures taken during the same match. If that particular picture had to be used, why did you as the editor, not recommend that a black dot be put on that part displaying the underwear? I am not a judge, but I have observed that the temple of Father God is being dishonoured by (intentionally or unintentionally) displaying nakedness by individuals where it is not required. Some of us, myself included, are not interested in this fashion. Therefore, if this is the new direction X even if this is a free newspaper providing valuable information about our surroundings X one will think twice before taking it and reading it again. Dear reader, We understand the cultural differences, however, action sport
photos often show the underwear athletes are wearing, which they feel comfortable in. The same applies to boxers and football players. Publishing the action sports photos in question was not to disrespect or undermine women by any stretch of the imagination and this applies to the woman or player in question. It was not published to expose her “private assets” as some people may perceive. The action of sports participation makes it virtually impossible not to show the underwear sports people are wearing at times. An example: In women’s tennis the likes of Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova and many others are often depicted serving with their underwear clearly showing. That is the reality of the sport and part of a news photographer’s job is to show it as it is. Action sports photos display the prowess, agility and abilities of the participants. As to whether or not consent was obtained to publish the photos, the player singled out, and other participants, have knowledge of the photographs being taken, hence they were all identified by their names and surnames. Visit www.express-news.co.za to view the sports photos in question and share your views. X Ed.

public space as their own. I believe that these cultivated pavements, patched with flowers and lawns, are in violation of the municipal bylaws. The bylaws state that no person may garden on any public road or any sidewalk or pathway if this obstructs or interferes with pedestrian traffic. Just as the Welkom lawyer complained that my friend’s car was parked on his space, people in Thabong are constantly reprimanded for walking on the pavements. It seems that some property owners are taking advantage of the people’s ignorance or lack of knowledge about bylaws. Along Nkoane Road in Oppenheimer Park in Thabong, a construction company assigned by the municipality to construct a pavement was forced to narrow the street by 12 m because property owners on both sides of the street prevented them from paving in places where they had grown trees, flowers and lawns on the public road. It is clear that it is property owners who are transgressing the bylaws by stealing the municipality’s land. Interestingly, a multi-million rand shopping complex is currently under construction in the vicinity where the construction company was forced to cut short on paving the sidewalk. Can the Matjhabeng Local Municipality kindly tell us whose land is it anyway?

New record for local runner V Molly Green FOR the well-known athlete Louis Massyn (64), the completion of his 40th Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon was a milestone he will never forget. He became the first athlete ever to complete 40 Two Oceans, as well as 40 Comrades Ultramarathons. “It was a very difficult marathon. Due to an injury I could not practise for eight weeks,” he said. “I took a chance, and fortunately everything went well.” One of his running friends, Johan Swart from Odendaalsrus, ran with him. “I really appreciate his support.” Another unforgettable highlight of the Two Oceans last Saturday was when the world record holder of the Berlin Marathon, Haile Gebrselassie from Sudan, said of Louis: “I have just met a new mentor in my life.” Gebrselassie, however, did not participate in the Two Oceans; he was a guest of honour. Having run his first Comrades in 1973, Louis undertook his first “voyage” at the Two Oceans in 1976. This year, Louis and Tony Abrahamson became the second and third runners to earn their Quadruple Blue, joining Noel Stamper (41 medals) in the Two Oceans 40 Club. Louis is currently on 42 medals for the Comrades Marathon, tied second on the Big C list. His Two Oceans’ medal haul consists of six silver, 31 bronze and two blue medals, and he can boast an impressive personal best time of 3:41, which he ran in 1981. Looking ahead, Louis says he has no intention of hanging up his running shoes

With him are, from the left Bruce Fordyce, Ross Tucker, a researcher from the University of Cape Town, and Elana Meyer. any time soon. “My goal is to run until my body will no longer carry me.” In terms of the unofficial world rankings for years participating in ultramarathons, Louis is currently ranked 17th after 42 years of running. After the 2015 Comrades, he will move up to the 12th position. But when you look at the combination of medals earned in the Two Oceans and Comrades, then Louis jumps right up to the top of the rankings.

Schools can win big in challenge IN the biggest initiative of its kind, SuperSport is launching the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge to commemorate its tenth year. The challenge is a nationwide event targeted at 10- and 11-year-olds from among South Africa’s 18 000 primary schools. The fittest primary school per province will compete for the title with the grand prize, a R1,1-million all-purpose, all-weather multi-use sports court to be built at the winning school. The nine provincial winners will each receive R10 000 worth of sports equipment and a physical education package worth R40 000. The primary objective of the challenge is to reinforce the instruction of curriculum-oriented physical education and to promote physical activity in all schools. Let’s Play coaching teams will target various schools per day to run the Physical Education Challenge. The fittest learners per school will compete, after which the top ten schools per province will qualify for the provincial semi-final, leading to an overall provincial winner. The final will take place on Let’s Play’s tenth birthday on 5 November. The obstacle course challenge is designed to accommodate both boys and girls and will be standardised at every competing school. It includes football slalom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles, rope pull and an agility drill; all of which are completed in a matter of minutes. While activity is the central focus of the challenge, it will also draw attention to two major social issues among youngsters: doping and bullying. A parallel campaign to end violence against children will
be supported by Unicef, the children’s rights and emergency relief organisation. Former Miss South Africa Jo-Anne Strauss is the goodwill ambassador and will make appearances at schools to address the issue. “We believe that this is a meaningful way to get schools involved in physical activity, particularly as government has highlighted the need for children to become more active,” said Vaughn Bishop, head of Let’s Play. “Kids needn’t be superstars; the challenge is designed to accommodate everyone at primary school level.” The Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Nedbank Sports Trust, Active Education, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, the Physical Education Institute of South Africa and MultiChoice. Sponsors include 32Gi, Future Life and Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa. Schools are invited to enter by calling one of the following two numbers: 011-894-7411 or 079-529-8862 (all hours). Schools may also send an email to physedchallenge@activeeducation.co.za.

He is a learner of the Moepeng Primary School in Maokeng, Kroonstad. The 12-year-old Mvula was chosen as the winner based on his stunning performance in a series of track and field athletics events held during February and March this year. He excelled at the different levels, zone, region and provincial as well as nationally, medalling in sprinting track events and long jump. Mvula’s excellent form has also seen him set a new record in long jump in the Free State and South Africa in the u.12 category. The athlete competes in the u.12 category, in the 100 m, 150 m and 4 x 100 m relay, as well as long jump. Mvula lives by his motto: Excellence is sport. Send your SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month nomination for school learners between the ages of 6 and 18 today (nominations received before the 20th of each month will be included in that month’s selection). You can email your nomination to supersport@zpr.co.za or fax to 086-552-4922. In 2015, the SuperSport Let’s Play initiative celebrates ten years of getting the children of South Africa active. SuperSport over time has evolved as the quintessential sports authority. With such strong sporting influence within the South African market, SuperSport has been perfectly poised to harness this power and rally the public and corporates to truly make a difference in society. SuperSport identified that there were huge issues severely inhibiting the development of children through skills learned by playing, physical education and sport – all of which are imperative to the holistic development of young people. It was from this insight that Let’s Play was born with the aim of elevating awareness of our social situation and to encourage play, activity and sport in schools. THE Griffons’ slip ups against the Valke in the Vodacom Cup tournament fixture have cost them a golden chance to consolidate their position on the table. Played last Friday (10/04), this was yet another must-win game for the Griffons. The local boys suffered a 38-17 defeat at the hands of the visitors who have consolidated their fifth spot on the log in the Northern Section of the Vodacom Cup. The Griffons are still in position six with five points, while the Valke boast eight points. The Griffons lacked cohesion, made costly mistakes, which included giving away possession and giving away penalties in the danger zone. The visitors, the Valke, capitalised to make the Griffons’ backyard at
theWelkom Stadium a walk in the park, cruising to a 38-17 victory. The boys in purple gave the home fans some glimmer of hope to consolidate their standing on the table when Martin Sithole scored the first try and Louis Strydom converted to give the locals the lead. However, they failed to rise to the occasion and suffered their second loss at home and their second in the tournament. The result puts the Griffons under immense pressure to win ahead of a tough away-clash against the second-seeded Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld B in Pretoria on Friday (17/04). The locals are bound to pull out all the stops against the Bulls to keep alive their prospect of finishing in the top four and reaching the quarterfinal of the first division.
