Family loses little one Mom blames outage
} Boipelo Mere SYLVIA KOK (20), the mother of baby boy Kutlwano (one year and four months) who passed away during a power outage on Sunday, blames the Sol Plaatje Municipality for her baby’s death. She thought that she should approach the media to plead with the municipality to stop the power outages as her son depended on an oxygen machine. “I should have gone through you first to ask for help. My son was born with a chronic lung disease and depended on the oxygen machine to live. We received the machine from the Department of Health and two gas bottles, which usually only last for three days,” she said. Sylvia said Kutlwano was discharged from hospital on Saturday after being hospitalised for three months. “This problem of electricity comes a long way, but he could at least survive for an hour during outages while we waited for an ambulance. After his arrival on Saturday, he was playing but we could see that he needed more attention than before,” said the distraught mother. She added that everyone in her neighbourhood knew about her son’s condition, including the ward councillor. “I even rushed to municipal workers when I saw them working on a power line begging them not to risk my child’s life. The

saddest part is that we have been avoiding this kind of situation by paying our municipal bills, even though we are all unemployed,” she said. In response to whether they had approached their ward councillor, who stays near to them, about their situation, Violet Kok, the 54-year-old granny, responded that their councillor, Nombulelo Modise, was never home. “I have known her as a supportive and understanding person but since she became councillor she is never home, that is why we never have a platform to address our situation,” she said sadly. “We all started panicking this time and tried resuscitating him with his other oxygen pumps. There was a moment when he passed out and then came to, but he later passed away due to a lack of oxygen. I blame the municipality because they have always risked my son’s life,” said Sylvia. “We are now in a situation where we do not know where to go as we do not have the money to bury my grandson. I do not even know whether my insurance policy will be assisting me as I only added him two months ago,” revealed Violet. Attempts to get comment from Sello Matsie of the Sol Plaatje Municipality in time failed as it was reported that he was not available. The enquiry was sent to Thoko Nkosi, who promised she forwarded it to Matsie.

RECENTLY, about 200 learners from various high schools in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District visited the Sishen Mine career stall at the Career Expo at the Kathu High School. Gr. 12 learners were excited to learn about careers in the mining sector. The five-day Career Expo was organised by the Department of Education and Assmang Iron Ore. The Department of Labour was also involved in this project. It’s Lucas – finally } Andre Botha and Lecrecia Prins
AND now there is one. After more than a year where the Northern Cape had a premier and an acting premier, and even at one stage a premier and two acting premiers, Sylvia Lucas has finally been sworn in as permanent premier. In contrast to the pomp and ceremony that was to seemingly accompany her original swearing in which was then postponed, Lucas was sworn in last Thursday with little fanfare during a legislature sitting. “It has been an interesting journey to get to this point,” Boeboe van Wyk, speaker of the Northern Cape Legislature, said in wishing Lucas well in her new role. In a short speech, Lucas thanked everyone who had supported her “including opposition parties who will still continue to support me”, she said. In February last year, former premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed while giving her State of the Province Address following a brain aneurism
IN WITH THE NEW: Sylvia Lucas (left) has been sworn in as Northern Cape premier following Hazel Jenkins’s resig nation. With Lucas is the Northern Cape judge president, Judge Frans Kgomo, who performed the swearingin cere mony. Photo: Emile Hendricks and great uncertainty existed since then as to whether she would be able to continue with her duties. After it became clear that Jenkins would be unable to resume her duties, more months of uncertainty followed with the ANC delaying in naming her successor. After the ANC eventually announced Lucas as the premier-in-waiting, opposition parties again put a spanner in the works by refusing to support a motion that would see Jenkins removed as premier. The parties said the correct procedures were not followed
in removing Jenkins. Support from the opposition benches was vital as the law required a two-thirds majority for the motion to be passed. This led to Jenkins’s remaining premier while Lucas was sworn in as acting premier. Jenkins eventually resigned from her position which then cleared the way for Lucas to officially become premier. Lucas will deliver her acceptance speech tomorrow. In the meantime, Mac Jack, ANC chairperson in the Pixley ka Seme District, has replaced Jenkins as a member of the legislature.

FURIOUS residents of Club 2000 took to the streets, protesting against poor service deliv ery. Photo: Boipelo Mere
Furore about poor services
} Boipelo Mere “CLUB 2000 is a stinking zone. We pay for services, which include sewerage, but the drains are still a nightmare. The municipality does not seem to care to find a solution for these blocked drains,” said Tsile Pharasi, community leader of a concerned group in ward 17 and 31. Pharasi emphasised this whilst addressing and reading their memorandum containing their grievances to the ward 17 councillor, Nombulelo Modise, during their protest on Monday morning. The residents of Club 2000 and Soul City took to the streets, burning tyres and blockading Nobengula Road with rocks in protest of service delivery. They accused Modise of nepotism and dividing the ward by plotting and threatening vocal residents. “The BEC of the ANC, ward committee and the councillor herself are fighting one another. How and when will they solve our problems? The councillor never responds or attends meetings. She is always too busy attending council meetings without giving feedback,” said an angry youth. The protesters also threatened to remove the tent of a church that the councillor attends, claiming that the piece of land it was built on, had been
promised for building shacks. Club 2000 is divided into two wards, ward 17 and 31. The ward 31 residents also joined in the protest as they were also affected by the same issues. Roads in Phidisanang and Tebogo Kok were also blockaded, where the protestors demanded Eskom electricity. “We are tired of our elderly always queuing at the municipal offices. We want to pay Sol Plaatje for our services and buy electricity straight from Eskom. They block your electricity, you pay and make an arrangement today, then when you go to buy next week, the electricity is blocked again,” said Anna Khunwana. “It is strange how our leaders forget us when they are elected. The ward 31 councillor, Moses Nhlapho, is serving his second term as councillor and is serving as a member of the mayoral committee at the Frances Baard District Municipality, but he has not improved our lives. We are glad that ward 31 is in solidarity,” said Pharasi. “The crime rate is high and our ward is notorious for being the capital of crime. Also children are always receiving TB and asthma treatment due to the poor drainage system and blocked drains. When it rains, 2000 is a no-go area for taxis and cars,” said Bonanang Mpolokeng. She even lashed out at
Modise asking her to admit if she was unable to solve the problems in her ward. “During her election campaign she promised us that she would personally solve our problems, she and the ward committee. “Now that they are all comfortable and earning their pay they forget about us and our suffering. She must tell us if the seat is too hot for her to handle,” said a furious woman from the crowd. “We in Edward Moeng cannot even open our doors or windows. Last week my daughter had to go to the doctor for diarrhoea and constant headaches. The next evening my five-year-old fell into a ditch,” shouted an angry mother. Modise accused Pharasi and his group of plotting against her. She refuted the claims that she had been dividing the branch and that she had allocated her church a stand. “This is more than a service delivery protest. “The church that you are referring to applied for that stand in 2008. Councillors sent all requests, enquiries and problems to the municipal manager’s office and have to therefore wait for a response,” she added. The community members have given the councillor until Friday to respond to their grievances.
Jesus came to reconcile us with God } Dr Thapelo Thipe THERE are set principles of faith for the church of Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ gave the church only one commandment namely to love one another as Christ loved the church. The principles of faith contained in the Holy Scriptures are sacrosanct never to be violated. The principles were taught by the Lord Jesus Christ and given to the first apostles as legacy to pass on to the next generation in the church. The principles by virtue of the aid of the Holy Spirit operating among the apostles are contained in the New Testament of the Bible. These principles are passed from one generation to the next generation of believers by word of mouth and Scriptures in the church. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit are two great agents that hold the church together. The church without
DR THAPELO THIPE the sound doctrine of the Word of God is nothing but a synagogue of Satan. The apostle Paul said to Timothy: “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:3. The church was commended to the Word of God for doctrine. The Lord Jesus Christ as the Head of the church is the true Role Model to all his followers in particular the church leadership. During his earthly ministry he carried the impeccable
character of God. He was the embodiment of God in character and speech. He was God incarnate. He carried the power of God operating in awesome miracles of supernatural proportions. Jesus raised the dead, made the blind see, the deaf hear and the lepers were made whole. Nowhere in the Gospel did he demand any money from anyone of those who benefitted from the power of God Jesus displayed. To almost everyone he would say, “Your faith has healed you, go and sin no more.” Jesus Christ was more concerned about the godly lifestyle of the individual more than the miracles He performed. Jesus Christ had not come to perform miracles but to reconcile man to God. None of what we see in the movement of apostasy is near to what Jesus did.
