Soccer star laid to rest

Henyekane’s death a wakeup call for all } Boipelo Mere “ALL youths have talent. All that needs to be done, is for that talent to be harvested and brought to the open.” This was the message of the former owner of youth soccer club Basotho Tigers, Adv. Phemelo Sehunelo, now a mining magnate, at the funeral of the late soccer star Richard Henyekane. Henyekane began the road to professional football by joining Basotho Tigers in 1999 before he proceeded to Hellenic. Sehunelo highlighted the challenges in soccer during the funeral service at the ABC Cemetery in Galeshewe on Saturday (11/04). Henyekane was killed in a car crash, along with four other passengers, during the early hours of Tuesday (07/04) on their way from Qwaqwa to Bethlehem. The other occupants of the car were identified as Paul Mofokeng (26), Nthabiseng Motsoetsoe (20), Ayanda Matete (20) and Mpho Moloi (18). The funeral service was attended by hundreds of mourners, including friends and supporters from the Northern Cape, Gauteng and the Free State. Representatives from other PSL clubs, Safa and government departments also paid their respects, including PSL chairperson Dr Irvin Khoza. Expressing the great loss that the soccer fraternity and the province had suffered, Sehunelo said that the tragedy should be a wake-up call to the province. He proposed that the Northern Cape government play a more active role in nurturing young players at an early age. “Yes, it is a loss to everyone, but we must appreciate what we

had and move forward in the soccer world. “In him, I have lost a talented brother.” Basotho Tigers have since been sold to the North West, where its name was later changed to North West Tigers in 2004. Sehunelo added that the youth should learn more from the life of Henyekane, who was lucky to have been spotted at the right time. Sehunelo prides himself in the knowledge that he played a big role in ensuring that Henyekane carved out a successful soccer career. He was also involved in Henyekane’s life as a legal advisor for contractual purposes when he moved from Basotho Tigers, to Hellenic, to Golden Arrows and to Sundowns. “The question is, are we still going to say there was a team called Basotho Tigers? “I have done my part in producing such talent. Somebody else must take over now.” He said the provincial government was not doing enough to promote soccer in the province, and emphasised that local clubs had to be subsidised in order for them to produce quality players. Trott Moloto, the general manager of Mamelodi Sundowns, and former coach of Golden Arrows, said it was sad indeed for a talented person to lose his life at such a young age. Moloto coached Henyekane at Arrows before moving to Sundowns. Henyekane reportedly followed him to Mamelodi Sundowns. Moloto noted with approval the support shown to the family during their time of sorrow by fellow soccer clubs. ) Go to www.express-news for more pictures.

IT was a dream come true for Azetta Townson (31), an employee at the Kolomela Mine, to be given an opportunity to buy her first house X a double-storey house X through the mine’s Social Labour Plan Project two years ago. As an administration assistant at the mine, she was one of the 718 local community employees who got the opportunity to buy standard houses in which Anglo American was reported to have invested an amount of one million rand. The mining company partnered with the Tsantsabane Local Municipality, which allocated land in Postmasburg for the construction of the houses, making Townson’s dream of becoming a homeowner come true. As part of an integrated approach that allowed the houses to form part of the current community without creating a separate mining town, the project was further reported to have addressed housing challenges within the local municipality. Townson moved from her single-storey home in Postdene, where she grew up, into her own 120 m² house consisting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, with other comforts like ceilings, air conditioning and solar heating. “Now I have my own big house. It is a blessing for me to be able to support myself and raise my first child in a very different and better environment compared to mine when I was her age,” she said proudly.

The young mother also got the opportunity of being visited by the minister of Mineral Resources, Ngoako Ramahlodi, on Thursday (09/04) during the launch of the housing project. According to the CEO of the Kolomela Mine, Norman Mbazima, the housing project not only created employment for approximately 3 000 semi-skilled and skilled workers, but had been so successful that it was awarded the provincial and national Govan Mbeki Award from the Department of Human Settlements in 2013 as the best subsidised housing model. He added that the project was an effort to eliminate hostels and create access to housing for all mine workers. “This is an achievement for all of us. This is an indication that the province and the country can achieve more through these kinds of partnerships,” he added. Kumba’s Social and Community Strategy is aimed at supporting government in addressing the gaps in the following key focus areas: education and skills, health and social welfare, youth, enterprise development and infrastructure development. Highlighting the important role that Kumba had played in developing Postmasburg, the premier of the Northern Cape, Sylvia Lucas, said that the town needed this kind of infrastructure. “We sincerely believe that they deserve to be appreciated for their stability in this previously turbulent town,” she said.

Local group back on TV } Boipelo Mere

THE pantsula dance group Black Converse will soon be making another appearance on national television. Hailing from Galeshewe, the group of four pantsula dancers’ spirit were not dampened by their elimination from the dance competition Step up or Step out in 2014. The team members, Joey Steenkamp, Emannuel Molatlhwe, Steven Mpadi and Lucas Koper, who claim to have returned home better equipped after their elimination from the top-seven stage of the competition, will be competing in the upcoming Stumbo Stomp Amapantsula dance competition that will be broadcast live on SABC1. They plan to use their experience gained from the previous competitions in the upcoming event taking place from 13 May to August. According to the excited members, they were over the moon when they received the call that theirs was chosen as the best dance video that qualified for the 13-episode dance show. Being reportedly the only group chosen from the Northern Cape, they will be competing with 52 other pantsula dance groups from around the country. “We are excited and nervous at the same time to have been given another opportunity to shine. “We will strive to scoop this one. I mean, if we made it to the top seven in the Step up and Step out dance competition, where we were competing against many other dance categories, we can just dance our way to the top,” said Steenkamp. The team revealed how they would use the experience and feedback from previous workshops to improve upon and play with their original dance moves. “We are eliminating and improving on some of our dance moves. “We also learned the importance of expressions, including how to manage the use of our energy effectively.” The group is well known for their trademark of expressing joy as they dance, which they were highly admired for during the Step up or Step out competition. The members said that was a way of also motivating each other and displaying the passion that they had for what they did. “This win is for us because it will be a straight pantsula dance competition. We know almost all the challenges of dance competitions and have an understanding of what we are doing and where we are going with this. “We have a more positive attitude to push forward through our passion for dancing. We do have a future in dancing and we are going nowhere near jail,” added Steenkamp. The group uses the backyard of one of their members’ homes to practice. Also acknowledging their fear that pantsula dance is fading away, they highlighted their struggle to make ends meet. They also said it was a challenge to host concerts to raise funds, due to the violence that seemed to break out during local concerts. “The thing is we cannot afford to hire security during our events, which leaves the audience and supporters at risk.” Leonie Koper, mother of group member Lucas, allows the group to use her backyard for practice. She expressed her pride in the group and promised to continue meeting them halfway. “Us parents must continue to show support for our children, because they have kept their heads up for ten years through thick and thin. We are aware that only one of the members is employed, thus they need our support during fund-raising,” she said. “It is better for them to use their talent to survive instead of robbing people at knife-point like their peers do.” The group highlighted how they had to give up their dream of sharing their skills with the younger generation due to a lack of resources and space. “But we are not prevented in any way to do outreach programmes, like at orphanages and on Mandela Day.”

SOME of the group members are from the left Joey Steenkamp, Emannuel Molatlhwe and Steven Mpadi practising in preparation for the upcoming competition. Lucas Koper was absent.

GA-SEGONYANA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

EARTH DAY will be celebrated on 22 April and many countries, including South Africa, are gearing up to honour the earth. As a theoretical concept, this should make a significant difference in the environment as well as people’s mindset about how we affect the planet we live on. Unfortunately, one day a year does not even begin to rectify the damage that we inflict daily. The recent uproar caused by the city of Johannesburg’s Sisonke Project is a prime example of municipalities’ disregard for the impact inner-city waste management has on the inner-city environment. The Sisonke Project was launched on 12 October 2007. With fanfare the municipality and the then executive mayor of Johannesburg, Amos Masondo, announced that the system would guarantee a cleaner and more sanitary environment. Skip to the present. The stench that emanates from the underground concrete sleeves is now unbearable. The theory behind the project is that users throw their refuse in strategicallyplaced rubbish bins connected to underground concrete containers. When the containers are full, specially adapted trucks will lift them out of the ground, empty and replace them. This takes about ten minutes. The concept sounds idyllic and it has cost the city R5,5 million to implement.

Commentary

Yet, the system only works when the trucks actually pick up the rubbish. And the trucks can only pick up the rubbish when they are serviced and perform their duties. According to E-News, there is currently only one truck in operation. Now look at the rubbish situation in Kathu. It seems as if a similar attitude to refuse removal is taken by the current municipality. Rubbish removal does happen promptly on occasion, but proper disposal takes a back seat. Dump trucks take rubbish to an overflowing rubbish dump and the situation deteriorates from there. The refuse at the dump is disposed of in a heap behind the designated dumping zone. The final outrage is that this heap is then set alight, and the air is filled with noxious fumes. The local municipality should take a hard look at their policies regarding garbage removal and the reality of how their methods are affecting the environment. One learns from your leaders, and currently the example is not up to Earth Day standards.

IN commemoration of its tenth year, SuperSport is launching the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge. According to Lynne Landman of ZPR for SuperSport, the Challenge is a nationwide event targeted at 10- and 11-year-olds from among South Africa’s 18 000 primary schools. She explained in a press statement that the primary objective of the Challenge was to reinforce the instruction of curriculum-oriented physical education and to promote physical activity in all schools. According to her, the nine provincial winners will each receive R10 000 worth of sports equipment and a physical education package worth R40 000. “The fittest primary school per province will compete for the title with the grand prize a R1,1 million all-purpose, all-weather multi-use sports court to be built at the winning school,” said Landman. Let’s Play coaching teams will reportedly target various schools per day to run the Physical Education Challenge. The fittest learners per school will compete, after which the top-10 schools per province will qualify for the provincial semi-final, leading to an overall provincial winner. The national final will take place on Let’s Play’s 10th birthday on 5 November. Landman said the obstacle course challenge was designed to accommodate both boys and girls and would be standar-dised at every competing school. “It includes football slalom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles, rope pull and an agility drill; all of which are

completed in a matter of minutes. “While activity is the central focus of the challenge, it will also draw attention to two major social issues among youngsters: doping and bullying. A parallel campaign to end violence against children will be supported by Unicef, the children’s rights and emergency relief organisation,” added Landman. According to the statement, the former Miss South Africa, Jo-Anne Strauss, is the Goodwill Ambassador and will make appearances at schools to address the issue. “We believe that this is a meaningful way to get schools involved in physical activity, particularly as government has highlighted the need for children to become more active,” said Vaughn Bishop, head of Let’s Play. “Kids needn’t be superstars; the challenge is designed to accommodate everyone at primary school level.” The Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Nedbank Sports Trust, Active Education, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, the Physical Education Institute of South Africa and MultiChoice. Sponsors include 32Gi, FutureLife and Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa. Schools are invited to enter by calling one of the following two numbers: 011-894-7411 or 079-529-8862 (all hours). Schools may also send an email to physedchallenge@activeeducation.co.za.

Nabbed for illegal licences

FOUR traffic officials and three civilians were arrested by the Hawks in the Northern Cape on charges of fraud, racketeering, corruption, contravention of the Road Traffic Act and issuing false driver’s licences. According to Col. Priscilla Naidu, the suspects, of which six are male and one is female, were arrested on Monday morning (13/04) during a takedown operation in De Aar. She revealed in a press statement that the suspects were aged between 45 and 52 years and would appear in the De Aar Magistrate’s Court soon. The arrest reportedly followed a joint operation between members of the Hawks and the Northern Cape Crime Intelligence Unit. It is alleged that the syndicate has been operating since 2012, which led to one of the suspects being charged in 2008 for similar offences. He was reportedly acquitted at the time. “Police have also confiscated the vehicles belonging to the suspects,” revealed Naidu. The provincial head of the Hawks in the Northern Cape, Maj. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga, is reported to have welcomed the arrests and warned that police would continue to clamp down on corrupt government officials who through their actions jeopardised the lives of innocent road users. “Unlawful conduct will not be tolerated and ignored and all law enforcement officers are expected to execute their duties in a professional and honest manner and behaviour such as this certainly does not augur well for any department. “Issuing false driver’s licences and registering un-roadworthy vehicles place the lives of innocent people at risk. The Hawks assure the communities that they would continue doing everything to root out criminality and we urge the communities to support the police in the fight against corruption. “Members of the Hawks work tirelessly to root out disloyal, criminal elements from society and will continue to tighten the screws on criminals,” she said.

Incorporate past into future ANDREW LOUW, DA provincial leader: THE debate on the city’s statues must be settled in the spirit of reconciliation. Statues, names and symbols do matter. Creating inclusive public spaces, with statues that reflect the shared values of a democratic South Africa, should be part of municipal spatial planning. And we should follow in Madiba’s footsteps by incorporating the past into an inclusive vision for the future. The apartheid government and the colonial government which preceded it, created a lot of evil in South Africa. Overcoming the legacy of apartheid should not be reduced to a contest to see who can vandalise the most statues. Look at the Honoured Dead Memorial, which was commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes and commemorates soldiers who died defending Kimberley in the AngloBoer War. Rudyard Kipling’s inscription refers to the victors being those who died for the city. Perhaps we can rededicate this memorial to commemorate all those who had died in the struggle for freedom. It is time for the city of Kimberley to convene an open consultation session with all residents. Use the model of the Inclusive City Campaign that the DA launched in Cape Town. Let us gather together and discuss what we, as residents, want to see happen with our public spaces.

Event a winner } Boipelo Mere

THE Easter Tournament that was held at different sports grounds around the Sol Plaatje Municipal area proved that more still needs to be done to improve the quality of soccer in the region. The tournament, played from 3 to 6 April, was reportedly a great way to improve the skills of young players and keep them away from social ills in their communities. According to Winston Mondela, chairperson of the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association, the tournament got off to a good start. The event was hosted for the first time as a promotional league for the senior division teams. Mondela said that the association had partnered with

the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), which sponsored the trophies for the winning teams. The tournament saw Ghetto United emerging as the league winners after beating Brighton FC 2-0 in the final game. Mondela promised to improve the next Easter Tournament by negotiating a better deal with their sponsor, the DSAC. “These are older players and they expect to participate in such tournaments for a money prize, not only for trophies. “It it not motivation enough for them to play for a trophy, because local teams need the money prizes to maintain themselves. “We need to sit down with the department to negotiate a better deal and look for more sponsorships,” said Mondela.
