It pays to work hard Dedicated matrics receive cash, certificates

} Tladi Moloi INVESTEC spent R340 000 by rewarding 40 matric learners from Qwaqwa who had obtained distinctions in Physical Science and Mathematics in 2012. They were awarded R10 000 each, certificates and a trophy at the 2013 Investec Qwaqwa Promaths Awards ceremony which was held at the Beacon Secondary School on Thursday. The awards ceremony was organised by the Free State Department of Education in partnership with the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology. A total of 13 learners obtained distinctions in Mathematics, the other 4 distinctions in Science while 23 obtained distinctions in both Maths and Science. The top achiever award was snatched up by Morena Tsotetsi (18), who is now a Civil Engineering student at the University of Cape Town. Tsotetsi, who had completed his matric at Beacon, obtained six distinctions and 86% in Science. He said he was happy with the achievement and added that it showed God was in control. “I am one of those people who believe that I am who I am because of God. I acknowledge Him for guiding me because without Him I would not have been here,” he said. Tsotetsi said obtaining six distinctions had not been a walk in the park and added that he had to make serious decisions beforehand. “There is no secret to my success. I just stuck to the basics. Kutlwanong has played a big role in my life and I want to thank them. “I am happy that finally my hard work had paid off,” he said.

Photo: Tladi Moloi Tate Makgoe, the Free State MEC for Education, said they had the best teachers in Qwaqwa. He said Investec had contributed more than R2 million to the

programme and thanked them for that. “The gr. 12 learners in Qwaqwa are brilliant in Mathematics and for this reason they’ve been

obtaining 80%. “I think we are helping children to realise their dreams and we are also helping South Africa to be better.

“Getting good qualifications is up to you, but once you have better qualifications, you can come back and develop Qwaqwa,” he said. Makgoe said one day Qwaqwa would be different because those children would do what they could not achieve. He said they had fought against apartheid and for that reason had to make South Africa prosper. “The class of 2012 is the best ever, and for the first time can contest the best in the country,” he said. Fani Titi, the chairperson of the board of directors: Investec, said they had decided to help the schools in Qwaqwa because he was born and bred in the small village Makgalaneng. He, however, pointed out that their programme assisted the whole of South Africa. “Our programme identifies learners from the schools and helps them with Mathematics and Physical Science – these are learners from gr. 10 to gr. 12. Today, we are awarding their hard work of last year,” he said. Titi pointed out that Mathematics and Science were very important because a number of things in the world were controlled by both including Accounting. “We would have loved to help learners from gr. R, but our budget is limited and for this reason we start at gr. 10. Our education system is improving and this is what we have been aiming at,” he said. He said they had been sponsoring Kutlwanong for four years and wanted to get more sponsors so that they could help more learners. ) Visit the Express website www.express-news.co.za for more photos of the ceremony.

People have name wrong } Tladi Moloi LEDIKA MOLOI, the chairperson of the Free State House of Traditional Leaders, said people should stop referring to the Kholokoe Village near Harrismith as Makholokoeng. Moloi said this at the unveiling of the new library in the Kholokoe Village. He said he had remained quiet for a long time, but what irked him the most was that this did not end. “Look, people who reside here are Makholokoe. So the name of the place cannot be the same. We are South Africans in South Africa, but it would be wrong if someone comes from outside and refers to our country as South African,” he said. Kholokoe is a fast-growing village situated west of Harrismith about 20 km on the road to Kestell. Moloi said it was time to make people aware of the name even though it was late. “It is better to change it now, because if we don’t, the upcoming generation will continue to use the wrong name,” he warned.

Foundation brings about change THE MTN SA Foundation has handed over medical equipment to the Nurse-Based Initiation of Antiretroviral Project (NPO) to assist in the HIV and Aids management and treatment of patients at the Philani Clinic in the small town of Frankfort in the Free State. The equipment, which includes a PIMA CD4 analyser, PIMA CD4 count cartridges and finger sticks, mobile digital blood pressure machine and glucometer with kits, will assist the clinic to put many patients on ARV treatment with immediate effect. The MTN South Africa Foundation also donated specialist medical equipment such as a Pima CD4 count machine and consumables, BP machines, diagnostic sets, haemoglobinometer and microcuvettes to make it easy for nurses at the clinic to deliver quality healthcare services. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Angie Maloka, senior manager: Health – MTN South Africa Foundation, said that the medical equipment directly benefited the health capacity of the Philani Clinic. “HIV and Aids affect all of us, regardless of background, creed, sexual orientation and race. While great strides have been made since the first reported cases, HIV and Aids continue to severely affect our communities,” she said. The NPO, which was established by Patricia Mgwexelwa, a

The project aims to support the government programme in its extensive roll out of the antiretroviral treatment in the rural areas, specifi-

cally targeting under-serviced and hard to reach populations of the Free State in the Fezile Dabi District. “Our support of the NPO and the Philani Clinic reinforces our commitment to supporting initiatives that help effect a real change in the health of commu-

nities. We believe that the nurses at the clinic will be far better equipped to prevent the spread of HIV and Aids in the communities of Frankfort and provide them with quality healthcare services,” explained Maloka. A number of challenges were faced by the Philani Clinic and

the community due to no availability of specialised medical equipment. According to Georjina Wessie of the Free State Department of Health, the donation of a Pima CD4 count machine by the MTN South Africa Foundation will help the clinic to put many patients on ARV treatment immediately, thereby avoiding delays and loss of results. The BP machine will assist in dealing with the challenge of long queues at the clinic, which results in people leaving before getting treated or in them becoming despondent when they have to come to the clinic for treatment. The challenge of post-natal patients bleeding at home will be dealt with through the availability of a haemoglobinometer and microcuvettes to primary healthcare (PHC) teams that visit homes of patients. The PHC teams will also be able to reduce overcrowding at the clinic as they start to utilise diagnostic sets when the visit patients at home to check their ears, nose and throat during a physical examination. The equipment will help the Philani Clinic to equip its staff with the required resources. “Our support of the Philani Clinic recognises the contribution made by the NPO in the fight against HIV and Aids and provides crucial equipment to the clinic that provides healthcare services to vulnerable communities,” concluded Maloka.

Don’t fall for these tactics ALFRED MOSIA, Bohlokong, Bethlehem: AS concerned and responsible residents we have noted with disgust how the so-called Department of Human Settlement apparently by fraudulent means compiled a list of 48 names of people from the Silahliwe and Phola Park Informal Settlement. The department claims they have qualified for what they conveniently call Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing subsidies to Vogelfontein. We notice, however, this is a well orchestrated recipe for war in Bohlokong. Kindly stop playing dirty games with the emotions of desperate people. In some other towns, people deceived as such are burning tyres and houses to such an extent that people end up losing their lives because of these stupid tactics. We want to know what criteria, policy or processes were followed to select Sihlahliwe and Phola Park above Captain Charles, Boipatong and Riverside? What was so urgent that the department undermined the rights of the residents of the other informal settlements? The other backyard lodgers who are unashamedly summoned to go and register for houses with their ward councillors whenever elections approach. The way this list was haphazardly compiled, the so-called urgency is nothing but election tactics. It is not only the residents of

these informal settlements whose integrity has being undermined, but that of all residents. This has been done on a number of occasions before. If you did not know, it was done during the very first democratic elections. The ANC approached a certain ambitious man to work on the very same area and he would become a councillor there. After he had won, he was sidelined. He joined us in the civic movement. He was recently approached again and told to hook me and another comrade. We tried to reason with him, but to no avail. He is again working very hard to convince these poor residents to buy this hogwash. Some of the residents were in this meeting when this man said he could not miss this chance of a lifetime. To the residents of the Silahliwe and Phola Park informal settlements, you were offended when we said all people who had applied also deserved housing subsidies. Go into this cautiously because you ought to have learnt from previous mistakes. As for your would-be councillor, you ought to know by now that he is only after his own, selfish interests and could care less about you. The whole community needs to be brought on board regarding this crucial matter. Once more the ANC is playing foul to amass votes. Be advised, stop voting for the ANC.

Enjoy Ramadan, be charitable THERE are five fundamentals or pillars of Islam, and Ramadan is the third. It is also known as the Month of Fasting. It is considered the most venerated, blessed and spiritually beneficial month of the Islamic year. In the month of Ramadan Muslims all over the world pay attention to prayers, fasting, charity and self-accountability. Religious observations associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month. The month of Ramadan has an important place in the lives of Muslims. Ramadan was the month during which the Quran was revealed to the holy prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), for providing guidance for the people and clear teachings. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every year in the month of Ramadan, the majority of Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations (during fasting hours). Those who are ill, pregnant, elderly or travelling, can make up an equal number of days later in the year. If they are physically unable to do this, they can feed a needy person for every day missed. Fasting places everybody, the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, on the same platform. It is not meant as self-torture. Although stricter than other fasts, it also provides for special circumstances. It is not merely a temporary rejection of food and drink, but this abstention enables the attention to be directed towards loftier ideals. Fasting accustoms a person to face the hardships of life by renouncing everyday comfort; gives strength to their resolve and increases the power of resistance. Charity during Ramadan Allah (the most high) has given to you, so Muslims should try to give generously in Ramadan, both sadaqah (optional charity) and zakaah (obligatory charity). Every time a servant of Allah (the most high) gives something in charity Allah (the

most high) eases his physical, spiritual and mental conditions. Sadaqah does not only have to be money. It can also be a good deed, such as helping another person, done for the sake of Allah (the most high) and without expecting any reward from that person. Even a smile is considered charity in Islam. Most Muslims pay their zakaah during Ramadan because the reward is so much greater in that month. Wealth is like water, if its flow is obstructed it becomes brackish, and if it flows, it becomes sweet and fresh. The first day of the new month (Shawwaal) is the day of Eid – celebrated by Muslims in the culmination of the month of Ramadan. Ramadan will commence on 21July. Express Eastern Free State would like to wish all our clients, readers and friends a happy Ramadan Mubarak.

The true meaning of fasting FASTING in Ramadan is not merely physically restraining from the obvious food and drink, but the total commitment of the servant’s body and soul to the letter and spirit of fasting. ) The fast of the self means to be free from all carnal desires. ) The fast of mind is avoiding thoughts about things other than Allah. ) The fast of the hand is not touching or taking what does not belong to it. ) The fast of the nose means not sniffing or smelling unlawful things. ) The fast of the feet is not going places where sinful acts are propagat-

ed. ) The fast of the eye is to prevent it from seeing forbidden things. ) The fast of the tongue is guarding against lying, backbiting, slandering, reviling, abusing others, indecent conversation and swearing. ) The fast of the ears is not to listen to idle talk, gossip, lyrics and notes that contain obscene and indecent things. ) The fast of the heart means casting out from it the love of worldly things and emptying it of corrupt material such as false beliefs, evil suggestions, filthy intentions and degenerate thoughts one might have.

FREE STATE STARS have shown five players the door in preparation for the 2013-’14 Absa Premier League season. Tsietsi Mkhwanazi, Moeketsi Mvula, Fikru Lamase, Jessie Jackson and the Zambian International Noah Chivuta have started looking for another team after their contracts were not renewed. Rantsi Mokoena, the team manager, said all the released players were not part of the coach’s plans for next season. “We felt that we had to let go of some of the players so that we could have space for new players. We were also not happy with the work rate of some of the players, like Lamase and Mvula. “They both scored one goal each in the games they featured in and that

’ . . . we are looking for ward to replace Mweene and Wome with international play ers,’ – Rantsi Mokoena was not what we were looking for,” he said. Ea Lla Koto have already lost Kennedy Mweene and Dove Wome to the big spenders, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Luyolo Nomandela has also shown an interest in joining the Johannesburg teams. However, Mokoena said Nomandela was going nowhere and pointed out that they

were not selling players anymore. “We won’t sell any player from now on. Yes, we are looking forward to replace Mweene and Wome with international players,” he said. Mokoena denied mentioning the names of the players to be signed and said: “We’ll announce the new players during our awards ceremony which will take place on 24 July,” he said. Express Eastern Free State has been reliably informed that Mvula was on the wanted list of Polokwane City and Duncan Lechesa, who once coached him in the defunct Carara Kicks, has invited the player for a pre-season. “After he won the National First Division, Lechesa requested the Stars management to loan the player to him,” a source said. Meanwhile, Lamase is trying his luck at the University of Pretoria.

KNOWLEDGE MUSONA, who returned to Kaizer Chiefs on Friday, says he is glad to be back at Amakhosi, his “first home”. Amakhosi have re-signed Musona on a loan deal from Bundesliga side, 1899 Hoffenheim, after he left for Germany in 2011. The Zimbabwean international top scored in South Africa in 2010-’11, with 15 goals, but has found the going tough in Germany. He was loaned out to FC Augsburg from Hoffenheim in 2012, and struggled to get game-time at either club. “There’s nothing much to say – Kaizer Chiefs is my team and my first home,” the “smiling assassin” told Chiefs’ official website. “I am happy to be back and looking forward to the season and working with the players and the technical team. Any jersey number will do for me, as I don’t play a number, I play football. “My stay in Germany was tough, especially as I didn’t get much game-time due to changes in management at both teams that I played for.” Musona says he has kept in touch with the PSL while in Germany, and is looking forward to a

new challenge. “I always checked Chiefs’ results online,” he says. “And I was happy to see that the PSL has become tough, there is no longer a small team, and I was also happy to see the league getting stronger.” Meanwhile, the Bloemfontein Celtic goalkeeper, Patrick Tignyemb, says he has heard that Orlando Pirates were interested in him but he will remain at Celtic. The Cameroon shot-stopper completed yet another impressive season with the Phunya Sele Sele, catching the attention of various clubs in the premiership. “I have had no offers, but I did hear Pirates were interested,” says Tignyemb. “Other than that there is nothing else to say. “Celtic are keeping the same goalkeepers with me, Dino Visser and Thabani Stemmer. There will be no changes.” Celtic are currently undergoing a major re-shuffle of their squad, having recently let Lennox Bacela join the Buccaneers, and Tignyemb feels the club will do well to find a replacement. – KickOff.com
