THE Sibisis’ funiture was left outside near the road after they had been evicted.

Eviction standoff } Tladi Moloi

IT took six hours for 12 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from Bethlehem and the sheriff of the court to evict the Sibisi family of the Baken Park location in Bethlehem on Wednesday. Express Eastern Free State has been reliably informed that the family was evicted after the house had been sold on auction. This was done because the house had not been paid for since 2005, soon after the father of the family had died. Looking from afar, one could have thought the police who arrived in six vehicles had been assigned to arrest a dangerous criminal who had committed a serious offence, but it was just manpower to evict the stubborn Mamohau Sibisi (40) who gave them a though time before the mission could be accomplished. Mamohau locked the two doors to prevent the police from coming in to the house. She blocked the doors with furniture on the inside and warned them that whoever pushed at the door would be met with hot water. Key South Africa in Bethlehem was called to help in opening the door and

soon after this Sean Glasgow, the transporter from the Sheriff’s office in Bethlehem, pushed at the door and quickly retreated saying, “She has a knife.” The police went into the house and spoke to the woman, who then left the

house to speak to her lawyers. Mamohau said she went back to her parents’ house at the Phumala Mqasha section of Bohlokong, Bethlehem. She said she was searching for the money to pay the outstanding balance of the house so that she could return. “The municipality has taken the furniture to their store room. Those things will remain there until I get a place to stay. “My husband died in 2005 and in 2010, when they kicked me out of the house, I was told that the police could not pay the house. I asked why and they told me stories,” said the heartbroken Mamohau. Glasgow said, “We tried to be as professional as we could, but they did not want to cooperate.” He said in the end they had to force their way in to do what the court had instructed them to do. “It was not the first time that we negotiated the matter with the family. We arrived here around nine – and look at the time. It is now 14:30. The woman was removed from the house in 2010, but since then she did not settle the debt on the house,” he said. He said there was a woman who had bought the house and she wanted

to move into the house. However, there were threats from the neighbours and the family which was kicked out that if someone were to

move into the house, the house would be burnt down. The frustrated new owner of the house refused to talk to Express EFS.

Three arrested for illegal diamonds } Tladi Moloi THE Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to three suspects facing charges of illegal possession of uncut and unpolished diamonds on Friday. They are Lepoqo Moshoeshoe (35), Ramosamo Maroping (36) and Rabisone Maroping (32). They were detained at the Ficksburg Police Station and are expected to re-appear before the same court this Friday for a formal bail application. The suspects were arrested in Bloem Street in Ficksburg last

Tuesday following a tip-off from a concerned community member. Capt. Phumelelo Dhlamini of the Ficksburg SAPS’s Communication Services said members of Crime Prevention responded to information about people who were going to exchange diamonds for cash. “They observed the place where the exchange was going to take place. The suspects were arrested immediately after they arrived at the scene. “The police searched them and found three diamond stones hidden in their trouser pockets,” he said.

“WHILST addressing certain diplomats, Pres. Jacob Zuma remarked that the quality of life in South Africa has markedly improved since the ANC came into power. This statement is not only misleading, but could in some instances be considered a downright lie.” This is the opinion of Theunis Botha, leader of the Christian Democratic Party. “If it is true that South Africa has a ‘visionary foreign policy’, why is it that experts blame the blunders our diplomats often make on a lack of vision

and policy? We also feel that the remarks on the improvement of quality of life are an absolute insult to the millions who are unemployed, those who live in squatter camps, those who are discriminated against because of the colour of their skin, and those who have suffered because of crime.” Botha said the president obviously appears to be part of the country’s economic woes, as his questionable statements strip him of credibility and the country of investment confidence.

Dangers of smoking in the spotlight } Tladi Moloi THE Department of Health, Social Development, Child Welfare, the Thuthuzela Care Centre and other stakeholders from Bethlehem recently celebrated World No Tobacco Day and Child Protection Week together with learners. According to Nthabiseng Mokoena of the

Department of Health, who is the mental health and substance abuse coordinator in the Dihlabeng area, the ceremony was aimed at creating awareness about the dangers of smoking and how children should be protected. She says they invited primary and intermediate schools, because those were the age groups targeted.

“We decided to talk to them at a young age so that they wouldn’t smoke. “We know that at the time they reach high school, they have already started smoking, but that does not mean we will not attend to them. We will visit them some time this year.” The day started with a march from Diphaleng to the tennis court near the

Bohlokong Stadium where the official programme started. Palesa Mpatane from the Phekolo Thuthuzela Care Centre urged the learners to make the police and teachers their friends. She said they should always tell them when something strange happened to their body or if they were raped.

Let them rot in jail, say children CHILDREN of different primary and intermediate schools in Fickburg have pleaded with the Department of Justice to grant no bail to perpetrators and to let them rot in jail. They pointed this out during their recent march where they handed a memorandum of grievances to the Department of Justice. The march was organised by the Setsoto Local Municipality in conjunction with different non-profit organisations and the community of Ficksburg. It was aimed at raising their concerns about the escalating pace of woman and child abuse in the area. Statistics revealed

that child and woman abuse in Setsoto was greatly driven by rape and domestic violence. Serame Madibane, senior interpreter, received the memorandum and he requested the community members to take responsibility for the well-being of the children and women and to cherish them in every way possible. “The community is kindly requested to report to the police and not to turn away from any action of abuse. Should a parent/guardian notice any unfamiliar behaviour they should kindly contact the child toll-free number – 080-005-5555,” he said.

Children made aware of their rights during week

} Tladi Moloi HADIYO MOLOI, the assistant manager of Welfare Services at the Department of Social Development in Bethlehem, has urged parents to stop sending their kids to buy alcohol and cigarettes. “In most cases children regard their parents as role models and they would assume that everything they are doing is right. If they drink and smoke near their kids, their children would end up doing the same,” she said. Moloi said this during the Bethlehem Social Development’s Child Pro-

tection Week which was held in the Baken Park Hall in Bethlehem. Child Protection Week was celebrated with the children of the daycare centres in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. According to Moloi the celebration was aimed at creating awareness among the little ones and their parents about child abuse and their constitutional rights. She said they also taught the parents that they should protect their children at all costs. “We invited the kids of the day-care centres so that they could start learning about their rights at this young

age. It is winter now and we wanted to teach them that they should not burn the veld, because it is dangerous to play with fire,” she said. Moloi said they had heard of many cases in the location where a child had burnt a house or veld down while playing with fire. “They should know how to protect themselves against the abuse in the location. I was happy with the participation of the kids and that was a clear indication to us that the matrons were doing their job. It is not only the responsibility of women to take care of the children, but the fathers should also play their part,” she said.

Bafana in for a tough one BAFANA BAFANA midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane says Sunday’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia will be a “hell of a game”, but insists the team is ready to do the job. Gordon Igesund’s team produced a polished performance as they beat Central African Republic (CAR) 3-0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Yaounde, Cameroon, on Saturday. However, Yeye says the big test comes in Addis Ababa this weekend. “We have to beat Ethiopia; there are no two ways about it. “I had a feeling they were going to win in Botswana, because they are a stronger side, but then that is good because it means we have to do the business ourselves and not depend on the next team to help us qualify. “It is as simple as that. We have to beat Ethiopia and top the group before we play our last qualifier against Botswana at home. “But this one is going to be more difficult, because it is an away game in the true sense of the word and with all their supporters behind them; it is going to be one hell of a game. “We have to work extra hard to get the points as this is mostly likely to be the group decider. “Whoever loses will have to play catch-up and with only one match remaining, it is going to be very hard, if not impossible. “If we lose this match, we have to depend on CAR to stop Ethiopia when we play Botswana, and that is not the ideal situation we want to find ourselves in.” Bafana will leave Yaoundé on Thursday for the match in Addis Ababa. – KickOff.com

Tips to make your car more fuel efficient THE fuel efficiency campaign which forms part of the 2010 Green Goal Programme encourages motorists to drive more efficiently. Smooth, steady driving and lower speeds reduce fuel consumption and result in fewer vehicle emissions – for every litre of fuel you use, your car generates about 2,4 kg of CO2. Top tips ) Service your vehicle regularly to ensure best fuel economy. Correctly maintained cars

can operate more efficiently and help reduce CO2 emissions. ) Check your tyre pressure monthly. Underinflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 40%. ) Ensure that there are no holes in the vehicle’s exhaust. ) Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle. The heavier the car, the more fuel it consumes.

) Close your windows at higher speeds and remove empty roof racks. This will reduce wind resistance and can lower your fuel consumption by up to 10%. ) Use air conditioning sparingly. Unnecessary use increases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 5%. ) Reduce idling. If you are going to stop for more than 60 seconds, turn off your vehicle’s engine. ) Avoid speeding and drive smoothly. In-

creasing your speed from 100 km/h to 120 km/ h can increase your fuel consumption by 20%. ) Change to the highest gear as early as possible. ) Anticipate traffic flow in order to avoid unnecessary stopping and starting. ) Walk, cycle, carpool or make use of public transport. Fewer cars on the road means less congestion and therefore less stop-start traffic (which wastes fuel).

CHAMPIONS: The Rhino FC players celebrate with the trophy after winning the Dihlabeng Mayoral League. Photo: Tladi Moloi

Determined Rhinos trample Pappilion in league final } Tladi Moloi THE RHINO FC are the champions of the 2013 Dihlabeng Mayoral League. The team pocketed R20 000 in prize money for the win. The players lifted the trophy after they beat the stubborn Pappilion FC by 3-1 in the last game of the league in the Bohlokong Stadium in Bethlehem on Sunday. Lebohang “Ace” Letsatsi, Karabelo Tsotetsi and Khotso Mofokeng netted the three goals for the champions while Teizi Motsoeneng scored the consolation goal for the Fouriesburg boys. The Bethlehem-based Rhino FC finished on top of the table with 77 points in 34 games. They were tightly marked by the free scoring Denma Super Eagles who finished second with 76 points after the same number of games. Eagles also won their last game by 3-0 against Super Sport. The two games started at the same time. The trophy was kept in between the Baken Park

and Bohlokong Stadium where the deciding games were played. The games started at a slow pace with the Rhino boys struggling to put their foot down. They were punished early in the first half as Motsoeneng broke the ice when he pulled the trigger inside the six-yard box. This was after the opponents’ defence failed to clear the ball. Just two minutes after the goal was scored, Ace equalised with a thunder strike. A few minutes before the interval, Pappilion’s defence failed to deal with a high ball which ended up on Tsotetsi’s foot and he coolly converted the chance with the keeper at his mercy to make the score 2-1. Pappilion came out like a team on a mission in the second half, pushing numbers to the opponents, but they failed to beat the rock-solid defence marshalled by Thabo Motolo and Tshidiso Matla.

Rhino FC relied on their ever-running wings, but they were mostly caught in the offside position. However, the Rhino boys knew what was at stake for them and kept pushing for an insurance goal. They were finally rewarded towards the end of the game when Mofokeng hammered the last nail into Pappilion’s coffin to let the score read 3-1 and begin the celebration for the Rhino supporters. Zoa Moloi, the team’s mentor, said he was happy with the performance of the boys and added that it was a tough season of football. He said he knew that the play-offs awaited them. “We are not finished yet, as we still have to fight our way to the SAB League via the play-offs. However, I believe my boys will do the job for the team,” he said. He said that he would like to congratulate the Eagles, who had finished second.
