Mayeza overall winner Believes in building homes for the people, not houses

} Tladi Moloi HANTSI MAYEZA, the owner of Maono Construction and Property Development, was an overall winner during the 2013 Govan Mbeki Awards which were held in the Bethlehem Town Hall on Thursday night. Her construction company came second in the Best Woman Construction in a Subsidy Market category before she scooped another award in the Best Priority Project category. Mayeza walked home with a whopping R130 000 cheque, certificates and a trophy. She said she was overwhelmed by the Free State government’s recognition even though she did not expect the awards. “I have completed the housing project in Parys and Bethlehem. The best priority award was for the Bethlehem project where I built houses. I am a banker by trade and I started in the construction business four years ago,” she said. She said she had been doing her work for which she was appointed without expecting anything in return. “I wanted to deliver quality for the people of the Free State. I always told my team that we should build homes for the people, not houses. For me a home is a warm environment, hence I have decided to put ceilings in all the houses,” she said. Retlaphela Construction was the second runner-up followed by Maono Construction coming

awarded to JD Niewehuise for Best Student (BSC Construction Management) and NL Miya for Best Students (National Diploma in Building). Olli Mlamleli, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlement, said they were in Bethlehem to celebrate the unselfish human commitment to the plight faced by the poor in the terrain of housing. “We handed out awards named after one of our respected struggle heroes, ‘Oom Gov’,” she said. She said the awards were aimed at motivating all stakeholders in the housing industry to harness human and other resources in accelerating housing delivery to improve the lives of millions of poor people by building sustainable livelihoods, communities and human settlements, providing choice of quality housing, opportunities with secure tenure and access to social amenities. “It was the centre-piece of our responsibility to provide and coordinate human settlement in the province as housing is an element of establishing communities in decent manner for it is further said in this clause: ‘Unused housing space to be made available to the people’,” she said. The MEC congratulated all people who won the awards on the night and added that the government did not take them for granted in their great strides of assisting in the creation of a better life for all.

African Warriors salute Khumalo } Tladi Moloi BRICE AKA, African Warriors goal poacher, dedicated the four goals that he had scored on Sunday when they hammered the nine-men Milano United by 4-0 to the late chairperson of the team, Jabu Khumalo. It was the Warriors’ last game of the National First Division that took place in the Charles Mopeli Stadium. Aka said he wanted to score only one goal for Khumalo, but he could not stop from scoring as the chances came his way on the day. “We won the game and I hope he will rest in peace. We wanted to win the game for our late chairperson and we believe wherever he is, he is happy. I wanted to score for him and I did,” he said. Aka said they had heard about the passing of Khumalo on their way from Polokwane and thought it was not true. “We called some people who were at

home to confirm and that was that. We wanted to win the league for him, but we could not. “He was the one who paid our salaries and one could see the players could not bear it at training,” he said. Thami Ngubane, the mentor of the team, said they were very sad about the loss of their chairperson and added that they wanted to win the game for him to pay their last respects. “Khumalo’s death is a big loss for South African football, and not only for the team, and we’ll always remember him,” he said. Maihlome Ihlasele finished on position 6 on the log with 42 points after 30 games. They were just seven points behind the champions, Polokwane City, who will play in the Absa Premier League next season. KMC will help babies

INFANT AND CHILD MORTALITY RATES in South Africa remain unacceptably high and reversing this trend is one of the Free State Department of Health’s key priorities as government works towards achieving some of the Millennium Development Goals by reducing the rate of under five mortalities by two thirds. The introduction and promotion of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) will go a long way in helping the department achieve this goal. KMC is a special method of care used to promote growth and development for low birth weight and preterm infants which involve babies being carried, usually by the mother, with skin-to-skin contact. To celebrate World Kangaroo Mother Care Day, the Phekolong District Hospital unveiled its newly-revamped KMC ward in

the maternity unit. According to Sr Cindy Cebekhulu, the maternity manager, the refurbished ward has four beds for exclusive KMC use. Health professionals of the rehabilitation, dietetics and maternity departments presented indepth educational programmes and interactive demonstrations to antenatal mothers referred from local clinics. Carol Symington, senior dietician at the Phekolong and Nketoana District Hospital Complex, said KMC should be practised for every baby at birth. “KMC has many benefits; for example, it ensures a quick bond between mother and baby. Other medical benefits are that babies stay warm against their mothers’ skin, much better than in an incubator, they use less energy, grow quicker, gain weight faster and breathe easier.”

Alleged diesel thief caught THE Harrismith Police have arrested a 41-year-old woman from Harrismith believed to be involved in the theft of diesel near a railway yard in Harrismith. The police searched a house and found containers containing diesel. On Thursday members of the Harrismith Crime Prevention Unit

searched a house where suspected stolen diesel was believed to be stored. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring said the raid had been carried out at night at a house near the railway yard where they had found a number of metal and plastic containers stored in a room. “They confiscated 310 F of diesel

in the containers and arrested the 41-year-old woman for possession of suspected stolen property. “An investigation is underway to establish where the diesel was drawn or stolen from. “She is expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of suspected stolen property,” he said.

Learners receive food parcels } Tladi Moloi THE Crime Prevention, Capacity Building and Rehabilitation of Prisoners Team (Crecare), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) from the Bolata Village in Qwaqwa, has offered a helping hand to 18 orphans and vulnerable children of the Tsebo Secondary School in the Namahadi Village in Qwaqwa. The organisation, launched in 2005 with the aim of preventing crimes, donated toiletries and food parcels to the learners on Wednesday. Motebang Mokoena (19), a gr. 11 learner from Mandela Park Section, said his parents had died many years ago. He said he was happy with the donation. “It’s difficult to concentrate in class if one is not dressed in uniform and if you look different from your classmates. However, that has never discouraged me from coming to school because I know that education is key,” he said. Mokoena told the orphans and vulnerable children they should be dedicated and committed to their studies. He said they should share their problems with the teachers, because they would never let them down. “I want to thank the organisation for what they did for us and wish them a long life. They should keep on helping other needy people,” he said. Mpho Dladla, the CEO,said: “We came to the school for two things. We wanted to create awareness for our organisation and also wanted to donate toiletries and food parcels.” He said the donation was aimed at showing the learners that even though they were orphans they still loved them. Nkhabu Kgwabi, head of the department, said they were overwhelmed by what the organisation had done for them. “We know those learners are in need. We have a feeding scheme at our school to help them. At times some of the teachers adopt them,” he said.

THE cold and rainy weather of Qwaqwa could not stop Prince Nyathi, an optometrist, and Mahlomola Mohale, a general practitioner, both in Phuthaditjhaba, to give free services to the community last Saturday. Both left their warm offices where they could have made big cash on the day and decided to give free services to the community. The duo said that was their way of ploughing back into the community. Mohale said he was happy to help the community that had been supporting them. He said they felt that they should give back to the community by screening them, because some people were sick, but not aware of their condition. “I was happy, because most people who attended were pensioners who sometimes used their pension money to pay us. Today, I injected some of them while others received some pills. Surely they would feel better for the next few weeks,” he said. Both doctors were called by the management of the Lives Transformation Centre Ministries based in Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa. Nyathi said Qwaqwa was a big place with more people who were unemployed. He said most of them could not afford the medical services and that was why they decided to offer them free services. “This was our way to say thanks to them. We are doing this in churches and old-age homes. I was identifying eye defects and problems. If we found that a person had problems we re-

This is not a new thing. We do it four times a year,” he said.

Bafana Bafana ready for CAR } Sidwell Guduka

THE Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, has announced a 25-man squad to face the Central African Republic (CAR) and Ethiopia next month in 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying matches. South Africa resumes the Road to Brazilcampaign with a crunch match against CAR at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on 8 June at 15:00. Their second match against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa is pencilled for 16 June (kick-off at 15:00). “These are two very important matches for us, and even though we are missing a few players through injuries or loss of form, things are looking very positive. “The players I have selected for these matches are highly technical and ready for the challenge. They also know what is at stake. I am quite confident that we will pull through,” Igesund said confidently. “These are huge encounters for us, and as for the CAR match, the most important thing is that we must not lose this game. If we don’t win then we need to have a draw so we can stay in the race because we still have to meet and hopefully beat Ethiopia the following week who are top of the group with two points ahead.” The Bafana Bafana mentor believes that even though playing away, he will have to stick to his offensive strategy in order to get positive results. “We beat CAR convincingly in Cape Town in March, and we want to continue with our attacking game like we did back then and I believe playing in a neutral venue will help in that regard. We have to be offensive if we want to get something out of the match against CAR or we will be putting ourselves in a very tight corner,” he said. “The following week will be key against Ethiopia, of course, depending on how they would have played against Botswana,” he added. Igesund has made seven changes to the squad that played against CAR earlier this year. Morgan Gould, Siyabonga Sangweni, Siyanda Xu-

JABU KHUMALO, the African Warriors chairperson, has passed away on Wednesday in the Mediclinic Hoogland in Bethlehem after he was hospitalised last Monday.

The former Free State Stars public relations officer (PRO) suffered a long illness and according to an insider in the team he could not watch some of the team’s home games because of his unstable health condition.

The team confirmed Khumalo’s passing and Tshepiso Senyane, the spokesperson of the team, said the team was hurting after losing such a great leader. “That was a big loss for football as a whole,” he said.

IN preparation for the forthcoming season, Free State Stars have snatched former Kaizer Chiefs middlefielder, Mthokozisi Yende, and Lucky Mokoena, a striker from the Maluti FET College FC. Mokoena scored a brace against Orlando Pirates in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup when they defeated Pirates by 4-1. An insider told mtnfootball.com that the two players have signed a two-year contract each and they are expected to report for training when the team comes back in June for the pre-season training.

Yende’s contract is coming to an end in June. He, however, struggled to get game time in the Ernst Middendorp team. Meanwhile, it is also rumoured that Ea Lla Koto might sign Mashale Rantane who is also from the Qwaqwa Vodacom League campaigners Maluti. Rantsi Mokoena, the team’s general manager, said he could not comment on the matter and added that they would announce the players on the right time. “We are now concentrating on how we finish the league and soon after we will reveal the names of the players who will leave the team and so forth,” he said.
