TJHETANE MOFOKENG MOFOKENG, the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Municipality, is expected to land in Switzerland tomorrow for the Swiss Summit of Leaders and the awards ceremony for the region’s best resort. Mofokeng was invited to the International Awards after the Europe Business Assembly (EBA) had nominated him for the best manager in the world. He will also represent his municipality which was nominated in the best city category. The best city and best manager nominations are in recognition of the city’s reputation, effective city management, constant growth and tourist attractiveness. Even though recent reports pointed out that the municipality had paid approximately R100 000 for the title, Clem Harrington, the member of the mayoral council (MMC) for Local Economic Development in the municipality, said: “Nonsense. I promoted the municipality and the mayor because I think they deserve the award. “We won’t pay that much for a piece of paper.” Harrington said they had been surprised that Roy Jankielsohn, DA caucus leader in the Free State, had been the one who had raised the issue. He said Jankielsohn was the one who had said Dihlabeng was the best municipality in the Free State. “It is also not true that the mayor will be accommodated in a five-star hotel. “I have been there and I can confirm that it is a three-star hotel,” he said. Harrington said the last time the DA leader, Helen Zille, had won the award no one had mentioned a scam, but now that it was Tjhetane’s turn, people said negative things. dation. He said the issue was controversial and that they were dealing with it. He denied that they had asked to be nominated, and added that he could not say when exactly he would be flying to Switzerland as they still had to decide this at a meeting. He said last year when Clarens had celebrated its centenary, they had invited the mayor of the Montreux Municipality in Switzerland, which also has a town called Clarens within its borders. The president of the old Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, Paul Kruger, had died there in 1904 and therefore the Montreux Municipality had historical links with South Africa. “We agreed to have a twinning agreement where we could exchange programmes relating to education, culture and technology. “We’ll send a delegation to Switzerland and discuss the details on how we are going to take forward the twinning agreement. “It is against this background that our municipality was nominated for the development and promotion of tourism. “We have been amongst the municipalities that have been recognised for good performance particularly in the areas of tourism and community development,” he said.

THE Dihlabeng Local Municipality, in partnership with Lesedi FM and the Nestlife Insurance Company, has donated eight special wheelchairs to the children with special needs of the Phedisang Bana Rearabetswe Centre for Disability. The wheelchairs were handed over to the centre on Friday in Dinonyaneng Park, Bethlehem. Jabu Malele, chief operations officer of Nestlife, said they were happy that they could offer a helping hand to the children by donating the special wheelchairs. He said they wanted to reach out to the people of Bethlehem. “We want to reach quite a number of areas, but as for doing it here again, only time will tell. I think the school needs a centre and Nestlife with all the other sponsors would like to take part in the construction thereof,” he said. Tjhetane Mofokeng, the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, said: “Our priority is to build a decent centre for them and we have managed to raise R800 000 thus far. We
have identified the place where the centre will be built.” The mayor asked the community not to hide their children with special needs and added that they should take them to where they would receive good care. “I am calling all the business people in our municipality to come on board and help the centre with anything that they have. It is a disappointment to get a helping hand from other people from outside while we have done nothing,” he said. Lorain Sebotsa, the founder and director of the centre, said they were desperate for custom-made wheelchairs because ordinary wheelchairs were not good for the children. She said they were not made to address each child’s need and weren’t the right size. “From today our children can use comfortable wheelchairs. We would love it if our business people could come on board and help our children. All the people working here are volunteers and we would love if we could give them something on a monthly basis,” she said.

Woman rescued from rapist A 51-year-old woman from Phola Park in Bohlokong near Bethlehem was screaming for help when a neighbour rescued her from an intruder who allegedly tried to rape her. On Friday morning the man allegedly demanded sex but the woman resisted and a citizen arrest was executed by a neighbour. The woman was in her house but left the door slightly open. Suddenly, the 32-year-old man, known to her, walked into the house demanding sex from her. He tried to force her onto the bed but she resisted and screamed for help. Her neighbour came to her rescue and the suspect was arrested. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and added that the suspect was expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court soon facing a charge of attempted rape. “If we can stand together as neighbours with good intentions, we can reduce crime against women and children. It takes a community to change the mindset of the perpetrators, not individuals or the police alone. Let us take responsibility and stand for law-abiding citizens and stand against criminals by working together with the police and join Community Police Forums. Crime does not have boundaries, colour or even status within the society. It’s a monster that needs to be brought to the ground by the community. Warriors pay their last respects } Tladi Moloi JABU JUNIOR KHUMALO, son of the late Jabu “Little Corporal” Khumalo, said: “Rest in peace, Dad. You were a great father, brother and husband, not only to us, but to South Africans. Your loss is not only the family’s loss, but everyone’s loss.” Junior spoke in front of the hundreds of mourners who had gathered together to pay their last respects to the African Warriors chairperson, Jabu Khumalo, who had died in the Mediclinic Hoogland in Bethlehem a fortnight ago. Junior said his father had been a hard-working person who had wanted things to be done the right way. He said he had never given up in hard times and added that he would never have given up on the dream of witnessing his team being promoted to the elite league. The Kestell Multipurpose Hall was packed to capacity with people celebrating the life of the fallen hero. He was laid to rest at the Kestell Cemetery on Saturday. “Mom, we’ll always be here for you. You can do it. To the boys, let’s go back next season and do it for this fallen hero. We should qualify for the Absa League next season. No matter how long it takes us to get the promotion, one day we’ll get it. That is what my father had always wanted,” he said. Busisiwe Mothata said she was very close to her father and added that she had lost a good motivator who did not want to see them fail. “You might have been short, but you were a giant,” she said. Busisiwe said her father had worked hard and smart with a number of businesses in his possession. She said Khumalo had always been available for them. “What a life.

The Free State Stars chairperson, who had worked with Khumalo for a long time during their hey-days in the then Qwaqwa Stars, said Khumalo had been a born leader and added that he did not have to go to school to become a great leader. He said the death of Khumalo was a big loss to the family and the football fraternity. “I understood that he had wanted his team to play in the elite league,
but unfortunately death caught him before he could achieve this. He joined politics after I had made him angry by selling the team a few years ago,” he said. Tshepiso Senyane, the communications officer of the team, said they had lost a great leader and added that Khumalo had loved his team and family more than anything. He said: “You will be missed, but not forgotten.” Molefi Oliphant, the former Safa president, said he could not believe when he was told a week ago that
Khumalo had died. He said he had called Jabu’s wife to get more information and his death was confirmed. “It was nice to see people celebrating his life. I don’t fear death at all because I am going to leave the same way. He was a flower that everyone rejoiced in when they came across it,” he said. Oliphant urged the Warriors players to take up their weapons in challenge of the championships next season. He said when a Warrior fell, others would take up their weapons and continue.

R31,2 m spent on improving district } Tladi Moloi
IN total R31,2 million has been spent on service delivery by the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality. The amount was utilized for paving the roads, the installation of solar power lampposts, sewer networks and toilet structures, the construction of oxidation ponds and the creation of job opportunities. The paved roads are in the Maluti-a-Phofung (MAP) Municipality and the Mantsopa Municipality while another is still in progress in the Nketoane Municipality. About 300 people of both MAP and Nketoane have been employed under the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP). Paved road of 1 km in Ficksburg worth R4 million and 500 m of road in Ladybrand worth
R2.6 million have been completed. The other two roads which have been completed are in Bolata Village and Hasethunya Village in Qwaqwa. R6.5 million was spent on 1.3 km of road in Bolata while R4.5 million was enough to complete the 1.3 km of road in Hasethunya. Oxidation ponds were constructed for R2.7 million in Memel and R1.9 million in Thaba Phatsoa. Thaba Phatsoa also enjoys light after 30 solar power lampposts were mounted in the area. The other 300 solar power lampposts were installed in Warden and Vrede. They all cost R9 million. Mzangwa said he was happy that members of the media who attended the three-day media tour had received first-hand information and witnessed the progress made in bettering the lives of the
people in the district. “The infrastructure projects were spread throughout the district, spanning across different municipalities. This includes paved roads, oxidation ponds, solar power lampposts, sewer network, toilet structures and job opportunities to the communities,” he said. He said the projects were a testimony of their resolve to improve the living conditions of the communities, make a difference in their lives and also respond to their needs of living in humane conditions as well as food on their tables. “Our focus was not only to build the infrastructure but also to provide jobs. We are happy that we have managed to put bread on the table to some of the people in the district because of the projects,” he said.
Chaos before Vuyo’s funeral VUYO MBULI’S estranged wife has accused TV and radio presenter Kuli Roberts of being among 18 women her husband had committed adultery with. Rumours erupted last week that Savita Mbuli and Morning Live presenter Mbuli’s current girlfriend, known only as Kim, had argued before Mbuli’s funeral on Friday. She’s also been accused of sidelining Kim while making funeral arrangements. “The woman you are talking about was among the 18 girlfriends that Vuyo had,” Savita told City Press on Saturday. “She was not the only girlfriend. Roberts was also having an affair with my husband, so why didn’t I fight with her or why is she not complaining that I sidelined her?” she said. Savita claimed she had discovered a barrage of “raunchy” SMS exchanges between Mbuli and Roberts. “I found these SMS’s on my husband’s cellphone, but didn’t confront any of them because I knew where Vuyo’s heart lay. He loved me and I didn’t care because I knew he was not a saint. He was just having fun.” Roberts laughed off the claims, say-
ing her relationship with Mbuli was platonic. “I have no time for attentionseeking Savita. I think she is the one who sent me those SMS’s from his cellphone. You know, on Saturday night I got an SMS from him saying ‘Hello, how are you?’ And then suddenly the SMS’s stopped coming. That man was too old to have a relationship with me. “I can’t even remember the last time I saw him. I have not seen him the whole of last year and this year. We only communicated on Facebook or Twitter and I only did so when I needed advice from him.” The Mbulis separated about two years ago after Vuyo was allegedly caught with his pants down. Savita moved out of their Houghton home and into a townhouse they owned in another suburb. But Savita said the pair had been on the verge of reconciling and that she had moved back into their Houghton home in January at his request. “Vuyo and I were living together with my children at the time of his death because he wanted to fix his marriage. He did not want to sign divorce
papers because he loved me. He was my husband, that is why I gave him the funeral that he got.” Savita said that during the last conversation she had with Mbuli before he drove to Bloemfontein to watch rugby with their 13-year-old son last Saturday, he had asked her to forgive him. “He said to me ‘Uxolo, thando Forgive me, love’.” She denied rumours that she and Kim had fought at the Mediclinic Bloemfontein, where Mbuli was pronounced dead on Saturday after suffering a pulmonary embolism. “I only reprimanded the guy called Nxeba who drove to Bloemfontein with my husband and son because he had disappeared and left my son alone immediately after Vuyo had collapsed. I then confiscated my husband’s car keys from him because I found what he had done irresponsible,” she said. Attempts to reach Kim for comment were unsuccessful. Two independent sources told City Press she had attended Mbuli’s funeral on Friday despite being ordered by Savita’s friends to stay away. – City Press

As the forum we know that the young people are the future of our society. Young people who are healthy and happy are well equipped for the future despite the major shifts occurring in the world they are about to inherit. The forum is a small organisation, yet it has a big role to play to improve the lives of the young men and women. It is important to make sure that our resources are allocated towards the programmes that will have the biggest impact on improving safety and health. By determining the effectiveness of the programmes and standards that we have implemented, we’ll be able to modify existing procedures to make them more effective and can then determine on how best to move forward with new

TANKI NKEKETOANE (28) will re-appear in the Tsheseng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a bail application. Nkeketoane, who is believed to be a Lesotho citizen, was charged with dealing in dagga. Altogether 21 bags of dagga was found in his possession. He was arrested after the community of Tsheseng had led the police to the huge discovery of dagga at Motebong-Tsheseng in Qwaqwa. It is suspected that the dagga was
transported to Qwaqwa from Lesotho by donkey. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, the police communication officer, said they received a tip-off regarding the dagga which was loaded off at a certain house at the Moeding Village. He said members of the crime prevention unit and a detective, WO Lefaso Sibaya, followed up the information. They searched the house and found the dagga and a man hiding behind a wardrobe. “The dagga weighs 372,6 kg and has an estimated street value of R370 000,” Mophiring said.

THE Truth and Reconciliation Commission did a splendid job and we need to thank the proponents of this valuable commission. However, there are people who would not like the world to forget the past and if as a people we can say we have forgiven, to them there will be no accolades and recognition to claim because their leadership is somehow linked to this past we so much wish to forget. To some the past cannot be forgotten because they were spectators licking the boots of their masters to mop the blood of the comrades who we kicked because they refused to dance to the tune of the master. Strange enough it is these cowards who are more vocal than the rest. People who have tasted apartheid want it blotted from of their lives. But those who were sweethearts of the regime want a replay. They will blame apartheid for corruption found in government, will blame apartheid for
factions in the ruling party, will blame apartheid because there are parties such as the DA, Cope and UDM exposing their incompetency and untrustworthiness – the worst of them all the temerity of the DA to call rallies in townships and that communities are beginning to understand that the DA is not an alien creature imported to revive apartheid as purported. As a country of responsible people we have been silent for a long time, perhaps hoping that the ruling party will come to its senses and notice that they are ruining the ideal that Tata Madiba cherished for so long to build a rainbow nation. The ruling party did all they could to destroy that idea by either harping on the mistakes our fathers had made nullifying the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Mistakes and blunders that have recently been committed by the ruling party are indicative of the fact that they were entrusted with the governance before they were ready to govern. The bottom line for political transformation is that people should stop voting for the ANC. It has failed us.

As there are assumed future political dynamics in our country, could Russia be empowering the presidential “yes men” in a military fashion, helping crush dissidents as it has experienced many a year? Putin has managed to eliminate these
threats. The run-up to equalise itself to China in relation to South Africa and Africa in terms of civilization and politics. Can Russian diplomats manage to influence the Western Cape bureaucratic system due to differing ideologies that exist as China’s province tries to have trade relations with them? The broad political scope is for Russia to gain its political standard by engaging the most economically viable states like South Africa. Will our democracy in the next ten years be growing further because most of the countries with communist alliances historically and now, whether Maoists or Marxist-Lennists- have a tendency of constitutional oppression? Let’s look at the motives of that Brics states like Russia in South Africa.

Bafana Bafana face Lesotho } Sidwell Guduka BAFANA BAFANA will continue their preparation for the 2014 Fifa World Cup when they take on Lesotho in a friendly match at the Setsoto Stadium in Maseru on Sunday. The kick-off is at 15:00. This encounter will serve as the only match preparation for World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic (CAR) and Ethiopia later next month. Itu took home top honours THE Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana number one Itumeleng Khune was the big winner at the Premier Soccer League’s end-of-season awards evening held at Gold Reef City on Sunday night. Itu walked away with the Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Goalkeeper of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament, earning himself a cool R575 000 in prizemoney. Maseru retains position as chair } Tladi Moloi MPHATI MASERU has retained his position as the chairperson of the Dihlabeng Mayoral League and promised that football would never be the same in the Dihlabeng Municipality. Mpati, who had no challenger, was voted back during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) election which was held in the Bethlehem Town Hall on Sunday morning. Even though the ballot papers were prepared they were never used as there were no contestants. The teams in Dihlabeng gathered in unity outside the hall to select the committee that will guide them and when they came back from a short break dur-
ing the proceedings they had their team ready. During the proceedings the electoral officer, Jack Mokoena, the Super Eagles team manager, conducted the elections and only a few people were surprised when those standing for the election had no challengers. Joseph Rantomo and Petros Tshabalala were voted the deputy chairpersons, with Elizabeth de Koker the treasurer, while Mandla Sibeko will be the secretary of the committee. Willie Molati, Mawela Mashinini, Malefetsane Mokoena, Molifi Makhalema and Gladys Moepi were elected as additional members. Mpati said he was happy that the teams had shown faith in him for guid-

ing the association. He said he hoped to receive the same support as in the past three years. “Football will never be the same in Dihlabeng. We had a small number of people in the office during our last term and with the current big team I cannot see any reason why we’ll fail to do our work to the fullest,” he said. He said they had already paved their way and promised that they would start where they had ended. “We’ll invite our team to map a way forward in June because they are the ones who know what they want from us. We must make sure that the teams do not regret their vote in future,” he said. Mokoena declared the elections free, fair and transparent.
