DECEASED Mantwa Seakhi

Boyfriend kills provider Siblings left destitute and in need of money for funeral

} Teboho Setena THE tragic death of Mantwa Seakhi has left her surviving siblings, Masetoki Rasenyalo, Seipati and Lucky, with a feeling of abandonment. The deceased was allegedly killed by her long-standing boyfriend after she had decided to end their relationship. She was the sole provider in the family comprising her four orphaned siblings. Two of her surviving siblings, Lucky (13) and Seipati (23), were entirely dependent on the deceased at the time of her death. Masetoki (27) has since gone to live with her husband in Kutlwanong following their marriage. Masetoki said Mantwa had been taking care of them since their mother, Sophia Seakhi, had passed away in

2005. They live in a three-roomed shack in K9, Kutlwanong. The grief-stricken family is appealing for any help in order to give the deceased a dignified burial. The funeral has been planned for this weekend. “We are faced with the difficulty of burying Mantwa. What we have is not enough for the funeral service. Mantwa survived on temporary jobs and did people’s hair to provide for her siblings,” said Rebecca Seakhi, the deceased’s aunt. The 32-year-old Mantwa was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, John Serotho Mahasela (35), who briefly appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court last Thursday. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Welkom police, said the suspect would allegedly not accept the deceased’s decision to end their troubled relationship.

He said Mahasela had allegedly attacked the woman and had slit her throat with a knife. The suspect remains in custody until his next appearance for a bail application on 1 September. “Their affair had become more trouble than it was worth for my late sister. Of late he had also been assaulting her,” said a devastated Masetoki, the elder sister of the three surviving siblings. Masetoki said the deceased had been living in fear after an alleged death threat by the suspect. She said the deceased had not reported the assault to the police. “In June and July it became obvious that their relationship had reached breaking point. My sister’s heart was no longer in it,” said Masetoki. She added that in June the deceased had been admitted to a local hospital in Odendaalrus with severe head injuries

following an alleged brutal assault by the suspect. “My sister didn’t report that incident either because she feared for her life,” said Masetoki. According to her, Mahasela had been wanted by the police since July in connection with an alleged attempt to set fire to Masetoki’s house. Mahasela allegedly wanted to speak to the deceased who had refused to leave the house of her younger sister, Masetoki. “My sister Mantwa will be sorely missed. She was always there for us, playing the critical role of a mother after our mother’s death. She never abandoned us,” said Masetoki. ) People willing to help the siblings with a contribution for their sister’s funeral can call Rebecca Seakhi on 079-184-7742.

Express Goldfields & NFS interviewed over 20 young women to get their views. Some of these women believe among them there are worthy women to look up to who will take the baton from the aforementioned generation that sacrificed their lives to liberate South Africa. However, those who did not perceive themselves capable of stimulating positive change and tackling the socio-economic challenges facing them, were in the majori-

ty. The pessimistic dared not support their statements and objected against being identified. Makgotso Falatsa from Welkom believes there are candidates around. “My sister Lizzy Falatsa is one of the candidates to look up to,” she said. “She’s a woman in mining, has respect for herself and has the qualities that make her an inspirational person, despite the fact that she’s not in the limelight. “She’s a real woman and can identify a real man.” Motshidisi Pholo from Thabong chose a celebrity. “Connie Ferguson, former Generations actor, is my ideal woman to look up to. She has achieved so much in her life.” When asked which qualities in Ferguson she admired, Pholo answered: “Connie is a great adviser from her personal experience in life. She’s bold and can motivate other women.” Pholo also had ideas on another way to

celebrate Women’s Day. “We should have seminars where young women and older ones discuss womanhood and the challenges women face – this can help to inspire one another.” Queen Modupe from Welkom also looks up to a prominent figure in the community. “Seipati ‘Twasa’ Seoke, presenter of Lesedi FM, spoke out strongly about women to fight the scourge of rape and encourages women. She also encourages people not to dwell on their problems.” The qualities that Seoke possess which Modupe admires, speaks of a woman to look up to. “Qualities she possesses are compassion and self-motivation and she manages to handle her emotions and prosper.” Kefilwe Mafokane from Kroonstad is a strong woman herself. “We do have inspiring women to look up to and myself, I’m of them. I look after my family and now I’m about start my own business. “I’m confident, patience and ambitious.”

A new generation of women inspire DURING August, South Africa commemorates women’s history, highlighting the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The peak of the celebrations was on 9 August, when the nation pays tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of the Pass Laws to women. In recognition of the bravery of that generation of women, a series of events is held countrywide. The theme for this year is Inspiring Change. Express Goldfields & Northern Free State took to the streets of Welkom to interview a few of the current generation of women. This was to find out whether or not there are prospective inspiring icons among them to look up to, who will follow in the footsteps of the previous generation. Inyathelo Elizayo Kukuphakamisa Izinga Lokuziswa Kweenkonzo

Abantu bayathetha, uninzi luyancoma, luncoma umsebenzi omhle wokulungiswa kwezakhiwo eMatjhabeng. Abanye bathi, “badlala ngemali ngeli xesha bengazisi iinkonzo eluntwini”. Masingazikhathazi kakhulu ngolungiso lwezakhiwo, esi sisiqalo nje sokukhulu okusezayo. Inyathelo elizayo kukuphakamisa izinga lokuziswa kweenkonzo eluntwini, ubudlelwane phakathi kwabasebenzi nobudlelwane babasebenzi kubahlali. Kusekwe amaqela aza kusombulula iingxaki ezichaphazela abahlali kwakunye nooCeba. Iqela A liqela elijongene nemibhobho yamanzi ampompozayo, iqela eliza kukhawulezisa ukusombulula iingxaki zamanzi nemibhobho yelindle egqabhukileyo. Iqela B liza kujongana nombane kwakunye neendlela. Eli qela liza kujongana neengxaki zombane, izibane zasezitalatweni kunye nokuqhawulwa kombane kwabo bangabhataliyo. Eli qela liza kujongana nezikhalazo malunga

neendlela (ukuvala imingxuma ezindleleni, imibhobho evalekileyo, neendlela ezimbi). Iqela C liza kujongana nengeniso yemali. Eli qela liza kuqinisekisa ukuba imali iyangena ngokwaneleyo khonukuze kubhatalwe amatyala ethu kufezekiswe neenkonzo eluntwini. Eli qela liza kuphonononga zonke izinto eziphazamisana nokungena kwemali kuMasipala. Iqela D – Iqela elijongene nezithuthi nokhuseleko lwezixhobo zokusebenza zikaMasipala. Eli qela liza kuqinisekisa ukuba zonke izixhobo zokusebenza zikaMasipala zikhuselekile yaye zisebenza ngokufanelekileyo. Iqela lokugqibela liqela E: Iqela lokufezekisa imithetho nemigaqo emiselweyo. Eli qela liza kuqinisekisa ukuba onke amanye amaqela, abasebenzi kwakunye nabaphathi bakaMasipala bathobela imithetho, imimiselo

nemigaqo kaMasipala. Eli liqela eliza kuphonononga lithabathe amanyathelo okukhusela uMasipala lithabathe namanyathelo omthetho xa kukho imfuneko. La maqela akazisebenzeli ngokuzimela aphantsi kolawulo lukaMasipala, ngamaqela amiselwe okwethutyana ukuqinisekisa ukuba isidima sikaMasipala siyabuya yaye abahlali bafumana iinkonzo ezifanelekileyo. Ngeli xesha la maqela esebenza, kuza kuthatyathwa amanye amanyathelo okuqinisekisa ukuba wonke umsebenzi kaMasipala wenziwa kakuhle yaye uMasipala ungumzekelo omhle weziko elithobela umthetho ngokuncomekayo apho abanye ooMasipala bangafunda khona. La maqela aza

MATJHABENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITy kuqala ukusebenza xa sele kugqityiwe ukuthetha-thethwana nemibutho yabasebenzi naxa uSodolophu sele evumile ukuba kuqhutyelwe phambili. Imibutho yabasebenzi iyabandakanywa ngenxa yokuba kungabakho ukungavisisani ngemiba yomsebenzi kuba uninzi lwabasebenzi luya kulindeleka ukuba lwenze umsebenzi ongaphaya kwalowo wesiqhelo. Amaqela aya kuba phantsi kolawulo loMphathi wexeshana owongamele uMasipala ngexesha asabambele ngalo, nakuMphathi wezolawulo lwenkqubo kaMasipala xa ixesha lakhe lokubambela liphelile, ngaphandle kokuba uyalelwa ngenye indlela nguMphathi kaMasipala omtsha. La manyathelo athatyathwayo ziinguquko ezifunwa ngooCeba. OoCeba benza iziphakamiso nabasebenzi kodwa abasebenzi bathatha ixesha labo ekufezekiseni ezo ziphakamiso, nto leyo eyenza abantu balahlekelwe lithemba kwiinkokheli abazikhethileyo, noxa ingesosiphoso sooCeba. La maqela aya kuchazela uMphathi owongamele uMasipala ukuba kutheni iinkonzo zingafezekiswanga nje yaye kutheni iziphakamiso zooCeba zingathatyathelwanga ngqalelo. UMphathi owongamele uMasipala njengentloko yolawulo uya kuthabatha izigqibo – Okokuqala ukuqinisekisa ukuba iinkonzo ziyaya kubahlali, okwesibini ukuqinisekisa abo baphoxa ooCeba ngokwenza njalo bephoxa abahlali bathatyathelwa amanyathelo. IMatjhabeng yidolophu, sifuna ubomi basedolophini, yimfanelo yethu leyo akukho mntu oya kusenzela oko, kufanele sizenzele ngokwethu. Abahlali bayacelwa ke ngoko ukuba bangayeki ukuthetha-thethana nemibutho emiyo njengeKomiti zeWadi zabo, imibutho yabahlali kunye nooCeba abaya kudlulisela izicelo zabo kuMasipala. Xa sisebenza ngokwemigaqo emiselweyo, siya kukwazi ukufezekisa amaphupha ethu edolophu ekumgangatho ophezulu esingazingca ngayo. RE MMOHO, SISONKE!

Service Delivery Levels To Change

Acting Municipal Manager Mr Mothusi Lepheana is adamant that together with the support of employees Matjhabeng will become the best in the country People have been making comments, mostly appreciating the recent facelift at Matjhabeng. Yes, some have made comments such as, “they play with our money and yet there is no service delivery”. Let us not read much on the facelift, this is just a cosmetic makeup in preparation for bigger things to come. The next step is to change service delivery levels, the attitude of employees towards each other and towards the people they service. Teams have been formed to deal with immediate problems affecting Communities and Councillors. Team A is the team dealing with water leaks and rapid response to problems relating to water and sewer. Team B is electricity and road infrastructure. This team responds to electricity supply issues including poor lighting in streets and disconnections. This team will also handle complaints

relating to roads (potholes, blocked drains and any poor roads). Team C is Revenue enhancement and protection. This is the team that will look at our income to ensure that we meet our obligations to our creditors and to members of the public. The teams will ensure that they investigate anything that frustrates revenue generation efforts of the Municipality. Team D – Fleet Security and Assets Team. This is the group that will ensure that the assets of the Municipality are safe and used effectively. The last team is Team E: Compliance Team. This team will look at ensuring that all other teams and employees as well as the Management of the Municipality comply with the laws, policies and regulations binding the

Municipality. This team will also be responsible for investigating and taking action to protect the interests of the Municipality including legal action where necessary. These teams are not independent of the normal structures in the Municipality, they are ad hoc in nature and they are temporary measures meant to ensure that the Municipality regains its integrity as a service orientated institution. While these teams will be in action, other long term measures will be put in place to ensure that all systems are running to deliver Matjhabeng as a prosperous law abiding institution from which

MATJHABENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITy other municipalities can learn as it is reflected in our mission statement. These teams will be in action as soon as negotiations and consultations have been completed with our unions and as soon as the Executive Mayor has given His blessings. The unions are consulted because there could be some labour matters arising out of the work of the teams as most people will be expected to either do more over and above their normal duties and reporting lines. The teams will report directly to the acting Municipal Manager during his acting period and to the Director: Corporate Support Services after his acting period, unless advised otherwise by the new Municipal Manager. These measures are the real visible and tangible changes that our Councillors want. The Councillors raise issues with officials but officials take their own time to attend to the requests resulting in people losing confidence in their elected leaders and yet the Councillors are not to blame. These teams will report to the Municipal Manager why services have not been rendered and why requests of Councillors are not met on time. The acting Municipal Manager as the ultimate accounting officer will have to take action – Firstly to ensure that service is delivered and secondly to ensure that those that fail the Councillors, and by extension failing the community are called to account. Matjhabeng is a City, we need City life, we deserve it and no one will bring it to us, we must do it ourselves. Members of the public are therefore requested to continue to consult the various constitutional structures such as Ward Committees, CDWs and Councillors who will accordingly transmit their wishes and requests to the Municipality. It is only when we use lawful constitutional structures, will we realize our dream of a decent City life. RE MMOHO, SISONKE!

Choir spreads the Gospel of hope } Teboho Setena SEDIBA SA BOPHELO, a gospel choir, is preparing to spread the Gospel through their debut album. The group’s name means fountain of life and it has 23 members, mainly youths, from Kutlwanong in Odendaalsrus. The group is working hard to introduce their music to the world and has recorded no less than ten different hymns. They use a backyard studio which is

also owned by a local youth, Thabo Motholo, who has aspirations to become an accomplished producer. The group plans to produce an album with 12 tracks and it is expected to be launched later this year. Through their album they hope to share the message of the Gospel through performances that both they and their audiences will enjoy. The idea to record follows years of preparation, performing at various occa-

sions and taking part in competitions. The choir has been performing together since its formation in 2008. Blessed with voices like well-tuned instruments, the members are from different denominations and they strongly believe their denominations were instrumental in the formation of the group. They are from the Zion Christian Church, Thy Temple Bible Christ Church, Methodist Church, Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost Ministry and the El Shaddai

International Ministries. The choir’s creativity makes it a much sought-after group in Kutlwanong – a township that is notorious for its gang wars involving rival gangsters. The youngsters in this choir, however, decided to distinguish themselves by using their talent to spread the Gospel of hope. ) A video of the group’s live performance can be seen at www.expressnews.co.za.

Harmony reigns supreme in FS } Teboho Setena IN the battle for the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup the Harmony Secondary School reigned supreme at last Saturday’s provincial final. Staged at Grey College in Bloemfontein, the event also determined the school to represent the Free State at this year’s national finals. The hard-fought victory by the Virginia-based school’s boys’ team saw the school continue its dominance provincially in schools competitions. Gilbert Matlokotsi, one of Harmony’s best players, scored the all-important goal to trump the gutsy Tlokula Secondary School in the final of the event that featured six schools from the five regions of the Free State. The goal, scored late in the second half, was enough to hand Harmony the prestigious trophy and cheque of R1 million as well as a ticket to represent the Free State in this year’s national final. The Tlokula Secondary School from Marquard did

exceptionally well to reach the provincial finals for the first time. They beat the Relebohile Sibulele Secondary School 3-0 and drew 1-all with RT Mokgopa in the preliminary stages. For their efforts the team took home R500 000 for a legacy project of their choice. The team still has a chance to prove their worth as they will be among the 18 schools that will compete for the national crown early in October. Together with Harmony they will represent the Free State at this year’s national final scheduled to be staged from 5 to 9 October in Pretoria. However, their spirited fight could not break the momentum of the all-time favourites Harmony, who boasts players in the development programme of the Harmony Sports Academy. The final scoring chances were far and few between as both teams avoided costly mistakes in defence. However, Harmony had the upper hand and broke

through the resistance of the boys of Tlokola who were weakened after two players had been sent off. On their way to the final Harmony won 2-0 against Metsimaphodi High and 3-1 against the Thabang Secondary School in the preliminary stages. Harmony is the most successful school in the history of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup. The school won the national title in 2011, finished in second place in 2010 and third and fourth place respectively in 2012 and 2013, winning a total of R2,6 million. Harmony’s mettle as the Free State champions and one the favourites nationally will be tested at the national finals where they will face off against the winners and runners-up from the other eight provinces. Victor Noosi of Harmony won the prize as top goal-scorer after he had scored four goals helping his team to be crowned the Free State champions. ) For more photos visit www.express-news.co.za.
