Calf causes a stir Born with ‘human’ head, deformed organs
} Tladi Moloi BERGVILLE. – A calf, born with what looks like a human head and tongue, has caused a stir in the rural area of Bergville, Emazizini, in the south of Qwaqwa. Besides the features that locals say resemble those of a human being, upon closer inspection, the calf also had both male and female reproductive organs. Sebenzile Mlangeni, who owns the cow that produced the deformed calf, says after the cow struggled to calve for a long time on Sunday, she decided to help it along and was shocked by what she saw. The 60-year-old says after helping the cow to calve, she noticed there was something seriously amiss when the children who were helping her ran away screaming. “I could not immediately identify this ‘creature’ and I called some men who were around in the neighbourhood to come and see the calf,” she says. Locals started rumours that maybe a human being had “fathered” the calf given its human-like features, but Mlangeni immediately dismisses this as nonsense. “Who could have slept with the cow, I don’t even believe in witchcraft,” she says matter-of-factly. She says although she cannot explain the mystery, she

It shocked me very much that is why I called people to come and witness it,” she says. Tau Madonsele, the herdsman Mlangeni hired to look after her cows, says he is just as shocked and adds that he did not even let the cows stay in the veld and graze for too long before bringing them back to the kraal. “He always lets them graze for a few hours before bringing them back to the kraal,” Mlangeni confirms.

Sadly the calf lived for a short time and after initially keeping the carcass in her house, Mlangeni has now buried it. Mlangeni owns nine cows and she says two of them are currently in calf. She says she is not afraid that those cows will give birth to deformed calves like the one they have witnessed. “We’ll wait and see. As for now we can’t predict what will happen,” she says. Mlangeni lives in the village with five of her eight children. Dr Angus Campbell, a veterinary surgeon at the
Maluti Veterinary Clinic in Bethlehem, says it sometimes happens that deformed calves are born, but it is very rare. “This is a genetic abnormality. It is a condition called hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is seen sporadically in large animals. It is relatively common
in calves, where inheritance and vitamin A deficiency have been implicated. Such calves are sometimes stillborn,” he explains. He says there is no possibility that this could be the result of bestiality (sexual activity between humans and animals).

SOUTH AFRICAN worshippers, some of whom were trapped and injured in the building collapse at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan) in Nigeria, reportedly attended TB Joshua’s weekly sermon on Sunday. The sermon was held next to the collapsed building site and according to eNCA, South African worshippers stood in the front rows, “waiting with bated breath for their preacher and self-proclaimed prophet to
make his grand entrance”. A guesthouse at Scoan collapsed on 12 September as more floors were being constructed on top of the existing three-storey building, leaving at least 86 dead and dozens trapped in the debris. It is believed that there were 349 South Africans visiting the church in the Ikotun neighbourhood of Nigeria’s megacity Lagos at the time of the collapse. A total of 84 South Africans died, the highest number of South Africans to die on foreign soil in a
single incident during peacetime. Theory of aerial sabotage Joshua told the congregation during his weekly morning service that he will be “travelling to South Africa to meet people from South Africa and other nations who find South Africa easier to visit, in memory of martyrs of faith”. The Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, visited the church on Saturday and promised to investigate the cause of the tragedy. He said he would hold talks with stakeholders in the
construction industry on how to prevent a repeat of the tragedy, and added that he had expressed his sympathies to South African President Jacob Zuma. Meanwhile, a Times Live report stated chaos, incompetence and lies were to blame for the death of many who could have survived. The report said South Africans were left wondering how many lives could have been saved if TB Joshua’s church and Nigerian authorities had co-operated fully in rescue attempts. – News24
Police are in control WHILE challenges with certain categories of crime such as murder and sexual offences remained, South Africa’s police had a firm handle on crime, said Gen.
Riah Phiyega, the national police commissioner. “Police are in control. The fact that we arrested 1,7 million people in the past year alone says a lot. Policing
is a highly controlled environment with clear standing orders. “Yes, mistakes are made but they tend to be the ones that are flagged by the media,” Phiyega said. She reacted to criticism that police had lost the war on crime during The New Age business briefing on Monday. This followed the release of 2013-’14 crime stats on Friday. The statistics, which cover the period from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014, showed that murder was up by 5%, with an additional 809 murders. The Western Cape showed the highest increase in murder by 12,8%, from 2 580 in 2012-’13 to 2 909 in 2013-’14. The stats also showed that sexual offences decreased by 5,6% from 2012-’13 to 2013-’14. – SAnews.gov.za

Sexual predators now prey
} Selloane Khalane
THE Free State Department of Education has sacked numerous teachers found to have turned into sexual predators and started having relationships with their learners. This was revealed by the MEC for Education, Herbert “Tate” Makgoe, during the social cluster media briefing at the Lebohang Building in Bloemfontein. Although Makgoe did not reveal the exact number of teachers who had been dismissed from the department following allegations of sexual harassment or consensual relationship with learners, he said there was a significant number. According to Makgoe, some of the culprits dismissed were caught sleeping with girls as young as 12 and 13. “There are many teachers who have been fired for sleeping with the learners. What worries me even more is that some would sleep with children aged 12 and 13 years old,” Makgoe said. He said his department would not hesitate to suspend a teacher who had been accused of sexually harassing a learner. “In some cases I felt like the learner was lying about the incident but I suspended the teacher anyway because the teacher could also have lied,” he added.

Sisi Ntombela, the MEC for Social Development, has heaped praise on Makgoe, taking a hard stance against sexual predators at schools. Meanwhile, Makgoe said one of the teachers employed at a Bloemfontein school who had been implicated in an alleged racism incident had pleaded guilty to the offence. However, the culprit’s name has been withheld. “We’ll not tolerate racism because it plants a seed of hatred which will emerge in later stages,” Makgoe explained. Earlier last month, the department temporarily suspended two principals and a teacher following allegations of racism brought against them. The principals were Francois Schoon of the Dr Viljoen Combined School in Bloemfontein and Charles Liversage of Christian de Wet in Dewetsdorp as well Trudy Erasmus, a Life Orientation teacher at the St Helena Primary School in Welkom. Their suspension followed the findings by the Human Rights Commission has since been lifted. In an effort to root out racial incidents in schools, the department was recommended to develop system-wide procedures for monitoring and reporting on initiatives. The department was given a period of six months to develop such a strategy.

The show kicks off at 18:30 and will run until midnight. Together with Chrisette Michele (also from America), Chantay will share the stage with South Africa’s finest talent, Zahara and the Kroonstad-born Choko. She plans to serenade her fans with songs from all her previous albums and will capture the audience leaving them in awe. Meanwhile, the Macufe Indoor Jazz festival will be held on 9

WE often give other people a chance to hurt and destroy us. We allow them to bring so much pain to our lives that it becomes hard to move on. Learn to move on, move on with your life and do not worry yourself about what they have done to you. At times we force others to love us, care for us, we do everything to buy love, the need to belong and feel loved makes us do desperate things which in the end we regret. Never buy love from someone who does not love and care about you, learn to move on – moving on will set your mind free. God has all the love you need. Never make it hard to forgive yourself for a fault that is not yours. At times we blame ourselves for others’ mistakes which they brought upon themselves. Blaming yourself will bring you more harm than good, move on, forget about it, move on with your life and never consider it as part of your future, but let it remain part of your past. Move on. Stop pretending to be who and what you are not, trying to fit in a place where you know you do not belong, a place that tears you apart inside. Stop pretending because you only hurt yourself, you only break your own heart to pieces while trying to fit in. Move on with your life and stop being what you are not, move on and be yourself. In Christ you are wonderful, beautiful and a new creation. Stop crying for those people who brought you nothing but tears. Stop trying so hard to win them over, let
them move on – if they ever truly loved you they would have stayed with you. God loves you and He is with you, he did not make you cry or hurt. Your former boyfriend or girlfriend did, so let them move on, forget about them. Stop embracing your failures. Stop crying for what you wanted to achieve or for what you have lost. What you did not achieve years ago should not hinder you. God created you with a purpose, giving you happiness was part of his plan for you. Move on with your life and forget about what you could have achieved and work hard to achieve what you want, because God is with you and nothing can be against you. Never allow someone to look down on you or undermine you because you are poor. Your situation should not be used to undermine you, never be hurt by those who undermine you because of what you cannot afford. Move on and do not even think about them. Move on, God loves you. Learn to move on with God and as you are moving on, invite God and let him be with you in everything you do. To God be the Glory.

CHAMPIONS: The Louis Botha Technical High School players celebrate winning the Free State’s COPA Coca-Cola u.15 tournament at the Flavius Mareka FET College Sports Grounds in Sasolburg on Saturday. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix
Louis Botha the FS champs THE Louis Botha Technical High School from the Motheo region are the new Free State champions of the COPA Coca-Cola u.15 tournament. The school won the provincial tournament hosted by Coca-Cola in conjunction with the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa) held at the Flavius Mareka FET College Sports Grounds in Sasolburg from 20 September. Louis Botha beat the Retshedisitswe Secondary School to the cup by 2-1. Louis Botha reached the finals as crowd favourites, following an impressive start; comfortably winning both their group matches of the preliminary stages. On the other hand, Retshedisitswe had to fight hard to book their spot in the finals after winning their first game by a slight margin, but the school
‘We want to continue where we left off with our winning spree and hopefully do our school and the province proud once again at the National Finals.’ – Prince Sani, coach of HTS Louis Botha went on to silence many when they crushed the reigning champions, Harmony High School’s, title hopes with a 2-0 victory to reach the finals. This victory marks Louis Botha’s second COPA Coca-Cola title. They clinched their first provincial title back in 2012 and they subsequently finished first at the national finals that same year. Having made their intentions clear this year, the school is on
the verge of matching up to their previous record. “The team have been doing very well. The school is proud of the boys,” said the coach, Prince Sani. “We want to continue where we left off with our winning spree and hopefully do our school and the province proud once again at the national finals,” he added. The COPA Coca-Cola schools tournament is an annual u.15 football tournament which aims
to identify, nurture and reward the best in young footballing talent. The 2014 tournament started in March this year with schools in each of the nine provinces competing at regional level. The winning schools from the various regions then competed to represent their areas at the respective provincial finals, where they ultimately aim to become the provincial champion and represent their provinces at the national finals of the tournament next month. The ultimate winning school of the 2014 COPA Coca-Cola football tournament will walk away with the honour of being named the 2014 champion as well as R60 000 to be used towards the development of their school’s educational or sporting facilities. The second and third place winners will receive R30 000 and R25 000 respectively.
OUPA MOHOJE looks to be in the frame as the likely replacement for the injured Francois Louw for Saturday’s Castle Lager Rugby Championship clash with the Wallabies at Newlands. Although Mohoje has been in the squad since the start of the June series of matches and made his debut against Scotland at the end of that month, Warren Whiteley leapfrogged the 24-year-old Free Stater into the match day squad when Willem Alberts was ruled out through injury. Alberts, the hulking ball-carrying flank that much of Heyneke Meyer’s game-plan has revolved around over the past two seasons, has been missed by the Boks in the championship. Juan Smith didn’t come through as the like-for-like replacement that Meyer would have been hoping for in the away match against Argentina, and he reverted for the matches in Australasia to having what some would consider to be a two fetcher flank combination. Now that Louw is out injured until the November matches, Meyer has to rethink his options. Mohoje is the only specialist blindside in the squad, and with Schalk Burger probably better utilised in a bench role this week (if at all) in preparation for a possible bigger role against the All Blacks a week later, the Cape Town game could be the right time for Meyer to give Mohoje his chance and restore his old balance to the loose trio. Mohoje’s non-selection for the Rugby Championship matches played so far has raised some eyebrows However, it must not be forgotten that the flanker has only played one season of Super Rugby, and several of his ten appearances for the Cheetahs would have been off the bench. – Supersport.com

Sasfa: Use players of correct age
} Sidwell Guduka
LUCAS SEKWENA, the Sasfa secretary in Bloemfontein, has appealed to clubs to field players of the correct age for the Nedbank and Grey College Soccer Tournament. Speaking to Express at the official launch of this annual u.18 event at Grey College in Bloemfontein last Thursday, Sekwena said age-cheating was a major problem and he insisted clubs should play a role in rooting out such misconduct. “As Sasfa we appeal to all the schools who will be taking part in this year’s tournament to use players of the correct age. Any club which will be found to be using a player who is over 18 years will be disqualified from the event. Over and above that, such school will never get any other opportunity to be invited to a tournament of this magnitute,” Sekwena warned. “I am glad we have never experienced age-cheating at this competition. So, I am once again appealing to teams to be fair and give players a chance to measure their ability against players of the same age. There is nothing like winning at all cost in football,” he said. The tournament director, Ludwig Koekemoer, meanwhile, has revealed that players would use the Adidas Brazuca ball during the tournament. “Adidas has sponsored us with ten Brazuca match balls which we will be using for the duration of the tournament. Brazuca is the same ball that was used in the 2014 Fifa World Cup Soccer Tournament in Brazil,” Koekemoer said. Adidas also put in place an initiative where players can exchange their cell phones for soccer boots for the duration of one match. “There will be an Adidas van with a variety of Adidas boots on display at the venue. If a player decides that he wants to try a specific pair of soccer boots, he can exchange it with something valuable like a cell phone for one match. “After the game, he can then return the soccer boots and get his phone back,” Koekemoer explained. “It would be the same procesure if a player wants to try a different pair of boots for the next encounter. This is a great initiative, because soccer boots are very expensive and most players don’t have money to buy them. We are happy with our partnership with Adidas,” he added. The event, which is sponsored by the banking giant Nedbank, starts on 4 October and the final will be played four days later. “This is the third year that we will be involved with this tournament. We are really privileged to be involved with such a prestigious competition,” Garly Long, the regional manager of Nedbank, said. All the matches will be played at Grey College’s Windmill Park. Entrance is free. ) For more sports news, visit www.express-news.co.za

THABILE MABELE, the Glen College of Agriculture’s netball goal shooter and captain, believes her team has what it takes to win the National Agricultural Colleges’ Soccer and Netball Organisation (NACSNO) tournament that is currently underway in Bloemfontein. The hosts, the Glen College of Agriculture, kicked off their campaign with two convincing wins over the Taung College of Agriculture from North-West and the Marapyane College of Agriculture from Mpumalanga on Sunday, much to the excitement of the local fans. The Free Staters clobbered the Taung outfit 24-10 in the morning before seeing off a tough Marapyane side 24-18 later on the same day. “I thought we played pretty well against the two sides. Both matches were very tough and exciting, but I’m happy we managed to register victories,” Thabile told Express on Sunday. “Judging by the way we play, I am positive we’ll make it to the final and win it on Friday. We just need to focus and take one game at a time. We had finished the tourna-
ment on position four last year. So, we want to do much better this time around. We have every reason to win the competition, because we are playing at home,” she said. Thabile said it would be important for them to maintain their impressive momentum throughout the tournament. “Our aim is to win the next two games to ensure that we qualify for the semi-finals. We want to keep the momentum going as a team and keep the winning mentality going.” Other agricultural colleges taking part in the tournament include Cedara (KwaZulu-Natal), Elsenburg (Western Cape), Fort Cox (Eastern Cape), Lowveld (Mpumalanga), Owen Sithole (KwaZulu-Natal), Potchefstroom College of Agriculture and Grootfontein (National Department of Agriculture). No matches will be played today as all the teams will be touring to Bloemfontein, but those who qualified for the semi-finals will battle it out to book themselves a spot in the final. All matches are being played at Glen, about 30 km east of Bloemfontein, and they start at 09:00 everyday. ) The same ten colleges are also competing in men’s soccer, with matches kicking off at 09:00 everyday.
