BOTSHABELO-BORN RAPPER MC FIRE might not have made it to the finals of the South African Traditional Music Awards, but the Sesotho rapper is still going places. After a sterling performance on the eTV breakfast show, Sunrise, yesterday, Zwelinzima “MC Fire” Mphumele will feature on the popular street dance show Jika Majika. Ayanda Roda, MC Fire’s manager who organised the Sunrise gig, says he is very proud of his artist and promises more from him. “To be honest, I could see he was very nervous before the performance, but I like that he did not even show it and in the end gave a sterling performance,” Roda says. MC Fire was supported by fellow Danduza Productions stablemate Benedict “MrSPL” Mabote on the live television performance. According to Roda, fans can expect MC Fire’s album in February next year while Mr SPL’s will be released later in June 2015. ) Follow MC Fire @mcfirehouze

NEWS WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

1. Do you think that the main music festival is expensive and no longer affordable? 2. Are you happy with the international artists scheduled to perform at the festival?

MACUFE 2014 organisers have avoided a potential banana peel after initially announcing that no cooler boxes would be allowed at his year’s main festival on Saturday. The ban on cooler boxes was cancelled on Monday following a flurry of complaints on Facebook. Photo: Macufe 2014 website

Cooler boxes allowed at Macufe } Oteng Mpete MACUFE organisers have rescinded their decision to ban cooler boxes at this year’s main music festival. Last week, the Macufe Facebook page announced that no cooler boxes would be allowed to enter the venue for the Macufe

2014 Main Music Festival. The announcement said: “The festival manager has declared war on cooler boxes. “It is unfortunate that we announce that cooler boxes are not allowed at the #Macufe2014 Main Music Festival. Plenty of food and beverage vendors will be available at the venue.” This prompted a flood of complaints on the festival’s Facebook page within minutes, condemning the Macufe management for not being transparent and trustworthy. Many complained that the tickets to the event were already expensive and that they were disheartened that they would have to pay more for beverages and food inside. “We will not accept the idea that you don’t want cooler boxes. We attend Macufe to enjoy ourselves, not to queue to buy beer. You have until tomorrow at 12:30 to rectify this, otherwise we will be left with no choice but to boycott Macufe 2014,” commented Mohau Sethoko. Festival revellers also used the platform to complain about the rather disappointing line-up of international performers secured to perform at the Main Music Festival. “Macufe has gone from bad to worse. They bring us these expired American singers who are no longer relevant, even in their own country,” said Pulane Tshehlana Moerane. “You (the Macufe management team) are

Whoever sits on the planning committee is taking us for granted. Now you are banning cooler boxes so that you can benefit further from us, on top of the already exorbitant ticket prices. You are really killing Macufe with every year that passes. #BOYCOTT MACUFE 2014,” said Thabani Jose Themba, another disheartened festival attendee. Macufe attracts more than 200 000 visitors from all corners of Southern Africa each year. Even international visitors make the yearly pilgrimage to the City of Roses, causing the city to come alive. “I am still so upset about this – we want to cancel our trip. The only thing that is preventing us from cancelling is the non-refundable accommodation deposits

which we have already paid. We’ve been to other jazz festivals before, for example Cape Town Jazz and more recently the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. If you guys want to implement the no cooler box rule, I suggest you attend these festivals and check how things are done,” said Thabiso Jonah from Pretoria. On Friday morning, after 283 comments of discontent and disappointment, the Macufe management team released a statement. “We at Macufe HQ appreciate your concerns and received your grievances over the no cooler boxes statement with the highest regard. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused. However, we have tabled all your concerns to the festival manager for consideration and further comment,” On Monday morning, The Macufe Facebook page released an official statement stating that they had decided to rescind their decision. “Please note that cooler boxes are allowed at the #Macufe2014 Main Music Festival. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the statement released last week.” The announcement seems to have managed to mend the proverbial burnt bridge. ) For more on this story, Like the Express Facebook page: Express-news

Air Force to help with discipline } Tshenolo Meruti A TOTAL of 148 learners from two schools in Botshabelo have “joined” the South African Air Force (SAAF) to learn some discipline. In a ground-breaking partnership to help curb the scourge of gangsterism in the sprawling town, the provincial Education Department and the Bloemspruit Air Force Base have joined hands to present a nine-day camp. The Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, who attended the opening day, said the department was happy about the partnership they had with the air force base. He said the partnership would assist with instilling discipline amongst learners. “You know that as the department we are fighting substance abuse and drugs in these schools. The Botshabelo area is full of gangsterism and that is what we are fight-

ing,” he said. Makgoe said there had been a surge of violent behaviour in learners and drug abuse in recent months and this sparked the partnership between his department and the air force. Addressing the learners and the media, Col Oscar Mkhize said he was happy that he could give back to his own community and asked the learners to make him proud during their stay. The learners will be staying at the base for nine days and will take part in various activities. They will be under the protection of military instructors who will ensure their care during their stay. After all the formalities and introductions, the learners were lead on to a big field where each of their bags where searched and military sniffer dogs were brought in to smell out any drugs. Vuyani Jebetwani (18) said he was very happy about what his school and the department was doing for the learners. This learner said he wanted to be president one day. Jebetwani shared that his school had many problems. Learners were pressured into joining gangs and he confirmed that some of these gang members were amongst them. He said he used to be part of a gang but was happy that he had escaped that life. Another learner, Sindiswa Hlalele (15), said they were victimised daily by gangsters in their school. Hlalele wants to be a doctor one day and said she would study hard to achieve her dreams. Mokgoe said the partnership with the air force would be an ongoing process. The air force will pay frequent visits to schools to monitor the discipline in the schools and progress of learners. The department hopes to see a SNIFFER DOGS go through the learners’ bags to make sure no contraband is smuggled change in the discipline of learners and into the camp. Road safety amped up DURING the October Transport Month Campaign the provincial transport department will focus on raising awareness of the important role of transport in the economy, and also invite participation from civic society and business in providing a safer, affordable, accessible and reliable transport system in the Free State. In a statement released by the department it was also announced that this year’s theme is Together we move South Africa forward. The official launch of the Free State Transport Month Campaign will be on Friday in Frankfort and the newly rehabilitated FrankfortHeilbron road will also be officially opened by Butana Komphela, the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State. The department says traffic police will conduct roadblocks. On 19 October an inter-denominational prayer service will be hosted in Springfontein to remember those killed in road crashes. The official opening of the Warden-Standerton road will also be held in October and learners from two rural schools will receive bicycles from the department to make their long walk to school much better, says the department. “This year’s October Transport

Month is taking place in the context of the celebration of 20 years of democracy,” says Komphela. “Transport is a critical key player in changing the face of the economy through providing efficient, reliable and safe public transport. There have been tremendous improvements in the transport sphere the last 20 years. “The Department of Police, Roads and Transport is proud to report that 20 years later, the Free State is indeed a different and a better place to live in. As enablers of economic growth and social development in the province, we are most certain that we are moving the province forward.” He says the department will continue to strengthen the progress already made and will highlight many areas of achievement. “The campaign will also be used to increase awareness among Free Staters on road safety.” The death toll remains unacceptably high with 1 376 people killed in the country in December last year and a further 193 people killed during this year’s Easter period. “The success of our road safety campaigns depends on all road users to do their part to create safer roads,” Komphela says.

Mosa makes history

MOSA LETEANE, a law student at the University of the Free State, has made history by being elected the first black female SRC president. Express’s Tshenolo Meruti spoke to her to find out more about her. How do you balance your studies and being SRC president? Sometimes I find it hard to balance everything. It takes extra out of you, more time, less sleep, fewer friends. I just have to make it work. My primary goal is to graduate so I can’t lose focus. What are you studying? I am studying LLB. This was not what I started with when I came to university. I started off with public management and then moved on to law. I have always wanted to do something in the arts, but pressure from my mom drove me to law.

Tell me about growing up. I grew up in Thabong, Welkom, and later on I moved to my grandparents’ place and did my high school studies at Unitas. I’m from a single-parent household. I have one sibling, a brother. My grandparents and extended family are very close and dear to me. My mother started from nothing, but worked her way up. What are your plans after you graduate? I sometimes feel really bad that I am at this point in my life and I am still unclear about what exactly it is I want to do. All I know is that I love working with people and helping people. My first thought after graduating will be to maybe take up a second degree in Politics and Governance. The world is my oyster and giving back to this country is what I want to do. First black female SRC president, how does it feel and what does it mean? When I ran for council this was not exactly one of my initial thoughts. All I knew was that given the years of experience and the issues that students at the university are faced with, perhaps I can still do more. For me it was (and still is) about what had to be done, the work. But firstly, I’m extremely humbled by the opportunity to serve. It means a great deal to us (the SRC) that so many students have trusted us to be their voice. Being the “first black female president” of a historically Afrikaner university is an honour but more than anything a huge responsibility especially with our transformation project. We remain committed to our students and their interests.

What are some of the hurdles you have already faced as SRC president? I am aware of the system, so I am not shocked by it. I was the SRC member for Legal and Constitution last year, so I am not new, I know the system, I am aware. I have been able to assist the new council to make their transition easier. The challenges don’t scare me as much. The only huge transition has been academically, socially, religiously and so forth. My team has made it easier.

Technically you are part of the university structures, forms and boards. The pres ident is there to voice stu dents’ concerns; the presi dent is the external relation for students.

Do many young people still not understand the role of an SRC president? Technically you are part of the university structures, forms and boards. The president is there to voice students’ concerns; the president is the external relation for students. The president is there to oversee that the SRC is run smoothly. It’s a nine to five thing. You are the voice of the students. You probe, you consolidate, you fight and it’s crucial that students elect the correct people. I am not limited to that; I am what is required of me at any point in time.

MOSA LETEANE, SRC president of the University of the Free State. Photo: Facebook

What are your plans for your term? I have a lot of plans. I have a vision and through the different portfolios I will address and achieve them. Academic and financial exclusion is the biggest problem that SRC president faces. We need more money and I want to raise money. A hug won’t solve the problem of financial exclusion so we need to raise as much money as possible before registrations. Residences are also going through a lot of transformation. Who would you say has moulded you? I thank God for blessing me with my mom; she is my number-one supporter. My mom is my pillar of strength, it all starts with her. My family is also very supportive, as well as my best friend, Mel. I have been very blessed to have many motherly figures, women who didn’t owe me anything, but saw potential in me. Had it not been for teachers who whispered in my ear that I could become more, I would not be here today. I hope one day to thank them all. What is your greatest fear in life? It has always been the same thing to me, failure. You know why I am afraid of failure, because you won’t fail if you do your part. Failure is you not doing your part. Of course there are situations that are out of my control, but I take that as a “not yet” from God, not a no.

A HERO, Dr Tshiame Kenneth Mopeli, the founder of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa and former chief minister of Qwaqwa, has fallen. Mopeli, the son of Chief Charles Mopeli, died on 1 October at the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa following a long illness and years of struggling with colon cancer. This icon, who launched more than 500 schools, five colleges of education now called Further Education and Training Colleges and the Uniqwa university, will be laid to rest at the Maphiring Namahadi Village on Saturday. The funeral service will start at 08:00 and end at 11:30. His life celebration (memorial service) is will be held at the Tshiya Resource Centre in Phuthaditjhaba tomorrow at 11:00. The late Mopeli leaves behind his wife, Matseliso Judith (née Moru), one child, Shoeshoe, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was born on 20 September 1930 in Namahadi and went to school in Namahadi (1937 – 1944), the Etembeni Farm School (1945 – 1946), Wilberforce in 1947 (form II and III in one year), Marianhill (1948 – 1951), matric (JMB) and did a post-matric teacher’s course. In 1974 he was chosen as leader of the newly established Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa, a position which he held until 1997. As leader of the governing party he was elected chief minister of the then Qwaqwa Homeland from 1975 to 1994. As mentioned, he was married to Matseliso and they were blessed with four children, but three have already died. In 1974 the apartheid regime issued Proclamation 203 of 1974 with the aim of lending legislative powers to the so-called self-governing territories. Although Mopeli was strongly opposed to the policy of separate development, he and his co-founders decided to participate in the system and hoped to undermine apartheid from within. His position as chief minister gave him the authority to reject nominal independence for Qwaqwa, which rendered the grand scheme of apartheid untenable. He established the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa for the prime purpose of giving black South Africans a political home and a platform from which internal black democratic opposition to apartheid could again be resurrected and made into a powerful instrument for liberation as black liberation movements were forced into exile

THE late Dr Tshiame Kenneth Mopeli, the founder of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa and former chief minister of Qwaqwa.Photo: Tladi Moloi and their leaders jailed. It was vital that an internal black opposition front was established at the time to continue to contribute to nation building by providing education to the masses. Indeed every black cloud has a silver lining. Moeketsi Lebesa, the leader of the DPSA, said Mopeli had rendered an unparalleled selfless service to mankind in a manner that was beyond description. “His retirement from active politics left a huge gap in the political and human landscape. Twenty years down the line history has not judged him harshly nor has it punished him. “History may very well remember him like this – a man who in human history bequeathed a living legacy to the future generation,” he said. He said when the history of this area was re-written, Mopeli’s name

would be written in golden letters. “Mopeli’s name will be revered and remembered with gratitude and treasured in history as an immortal name. That he certainly was. “He was also warm, gentle, compelling and kind, while fierce, tenacious and stubborn on points of principle. He had a wonderful sense of humour. He was deeply loyal, noble and brave. “I count it the greatest privilege of my life to have had him at my side, as my father and mentor. Let’s celebrate his life. “A life well lived. Let us not mourn like those who have no hope, but as believers who know that a day is coming when death will be no more,” he said. ) Express would like to send its heartfelt condolenses to the family of Dr Tsiame Kenneth Mopeli. May his soul rest in peace.

Unchangeable events are part of God’s plan } Mutombo Moise Kumwimba MOST of the time unchangeable events bring about bad situations in life. To true believers, however, unchangeable events always carry God’s purpose. The most important thing we should know while under the oppression of an unchangeable event is God’s opinion concerning that situation. Knowing God’s opinion in the midst of an unchangeable event will impart strength onto you to press on until the sun rises again in your life. Abraham and Sarah faced barrenness for a very long time and although he could talk to God, God did not help him, because that unchangeable event was to glorify the Name of the Lord. Joseph, in Genesis chapter 38 and 39, was mistreated, betrayed and sold by his own brothers because of his vision. The

vision was given by God, but during that time of rejection God did not rescue him – it was an unchangeable event. I believe God knew that His Holy Name would be glorified in the end. His brothers did not know that man’s rejection provoke God’s direction. In Luke 22:39 Jesus’ death was not any kind of death, but a humiliating way of dying – shameful, sad and pitiful. It is an unchangeable event. He was born to be crucified; many

FS jumps three places in tourism

THE Free State has jumped three places, from eighth to fifth place, in terms of international tourists visiting the country. The Tourism MEC, Mosebenzi Zwane, says he wants to use this achievement to bring even more tourists to this part of the world. “The latest Stats South Africa tourism statistics indicate an increase in international arrivals for the Free State from 6,5% in 2012 to 9,6% at the end of September 2013. This is a significant improvement for the Free State, as this represents 48% growth. This increase moves the province from position eight to position number five out of the nine provinces,” he said. Tourism product owners play an imperative role in providing travellers with a unique and memorable experience. Seven of the best tourism players or entrepreneurs in the Free State have made their mark in the tourism industry and their efforts will be rewarded at the glittering Lilizela Tourism Awards.

The Lilizela Tourism Awards are an initiative of the National Department of Tourism; spearheaded by South African Tourism and delivered by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. The purpose of the awards is to recognise and promote excellence amongst tourism players and businesses to strive for global competitiveness. “This is a good enough reason to want to make sure that our tourism products are of high standard to attract even more travellers to the province,” Zwane said. The competition was divided into four categories, namely: Minister’s Award, Service Excellence, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability and Good Governance (Social, Economic and Environmental). About 33 Free State tourism players and businesses entered the competition this year. The seven provincial winners will compete with winners from other provinces for the ultimate national title to be announced tomorrow.

Carnival a display of culture and creativity THE City of Roses came to life on Friday with a contagious and exuberant celebration of Mzansi’s diverse communities and cultures as floats, masks and over-the-top outfits descended on Bloemfontein’s city grid with the first Redd’s Street Carnival procession. The procession started at the Central University of Technology’s (CUT) Main Campus and took participants on a journey filled with excitement, freedom and spontaneity, featuring an incredible display of floats and costumes, some made of recycled cans

created by students of the University of the Free State (UFS) as part of co-sponsor Bevcan’s CAN DO! challenge. This added to the vivid spectacle that included the Thaba Nchu Field Brass Band, the Cheetah Girls, stilt walkers, the Greek Youth Society, Mapantsula a Kasi in shwe shwe suits and the Mmabana Cultural Group in Tswana costumes to name but a few. The procession culminated in the official Redd’s Street Carnival after party at Old Grey’s, featuring an explosive mix of South Africa’s leading artists.

prophets foretold this unchangeable event. Here we see that Jesus knew the time was near for him to die, but he became afraid. That is why he went to pray, asking His Father if possible to take that cup away. The Bible says God therefore sent an angel to give Jesus strength. The question is why did God send an angel to strengthen Jesus? The answer is that the angel came to remind Jesus his purpose in this world and guide him to die the very same way, because it was an unchangeable event. God could not change anything, but to give Jesus strength to die in the same way which was long foretold. God knew through that death Glory would come to Him. Dear readers, be encouraged to know that if your situation is an unchangeable event, there is nothing you can do about

it, because it is to glorify God. If you are faced with a difficult situation, the first thing you need do, is to know God’s opinion concerning that situation, because when you know God’s opinion about it, you will have peace of mind. Knowing God’s opinion concerning your unchangeable event is as good as an answer. Be encouraged right now, put your situation in God’s Hand and He will put His peace in your heart. ) To hear more and learn more about these messages, for your healing and deliverance, you are invited to attend the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00. You can also send us your prayer request on 071-214-9404. God bless you, dear readers.

THRONGS of cultural and entertainment patrons heading to the Free State can look forward to being part of the buzz with some of the best offerings still on the menu at Macufe. Various African inspired garments will be showcased and sold at the Arts and Cultural Village.

Theatre-goers are invited to John Kani’s Missing at the Civic Theatre which kicked off on Monday and ends tomorrow. This is a well-crafted play weaving a very real human drama into a social commentary. Wonderfully insightful, John Kani’s characters are torn

between family and political ambition. The simple staging of the play allows a very compelling drama to come to the fore. The cast of John Kani (Robert Khapila), Susan Danford (Anna Ohlson), Apollo Ntshoko (Peter Tshabalala) and Buhle Ngaba as Ayanda each gives enthralling per-

formances. It is a satisfying experience to witness a cast come together as an ensemble. Around the historic elections in 1994, a great deal of attention was given to returning exiles. Missing gives a glimpse into just who these people were, their lives abroad and their expectations leading up to 1994. However, Missing is not a story of return from exile but a tale of disillusionment. For just R170, the mid-week blues can be laughed away today, when Mzansi’s top comedians including Cape Town’s Marc Lottering; Kroonstadborn comic David Kau, Joey Rasdien and Skhumba Hlophe take to the stage at the Dome. Lottering has been in the comedy business for 13 years while Kau began his career as the first black stand-up comedian in the 1998 Smirnoff Comedy Festival. Kau was the only black person on stage out of 44 comedians. Rasdien has performed at many major comedy festivals in South Africa. Hlophe’s star is on the rise as he has just become a presenter on SABC 1’s Mzansi Insider show.

Young player gifted ANDISWA MTSHONISWA (14) has been selected as September’s SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for Express. The Dr Block Senior Secondary School student is a gifted soccer player. He started playing soccer at the age of five and strives to one day become a professional soccer player. Andile’s team took part in the Build It Leagues and emerged as victors in 2013. He was also selected to attend trials for Mamelodi Sundowns in June. He aims to be a professional association football player one day like his role models George Lebese and Bernard Parker.

KHOTHATSO MOKONE

Student from FS winner ENGEN recently staged another successful Engen Knockout Challenge in Bloemfontein. To further engage with the youth and football supporters in South Africa, Engen introduced the Be the Journo competition where the supporters became the media. The competition was based around a partnership with Soccer Laduma where Engen made use of the publication’s Get Published portal. The football supporters were asked to write an article based on the Engen Knockout Challenge that was taking place in their regions and upload it on to the portal. Engen rewarded the entrants with an iPad Mini and a job-shadowing opportunity with publications such as The Herald in Port Elizabeth, Express News in Bloemfontein, the Rising Sun Community Newspaper in Durban, Sowetan Bulletin in Johannesburg and Peoples Post in Cape Town. One entrant who stood out was a University of the Free State student and avid football supporter, Khothatso Mokone who entered the Bloemfontein round of the Be the Journo competition. Mokone loves writing and photography, coupled with his love for sport. The competition presented a perfect opportunity for the young student to showcase his writing skills. Mokone’s impressive writing skills won him the competition where he participated at the event and was awarded with the bragging rights of being the journo of the Bloemfontein region, an iPad Mini and the coveted job-shadowing opportunity at Express. Engen will have another instalment of the Be the Journo competition for the Engen Knockout Challenge next year.

Mokone loves writing and photography, coupled with his love for sport. The com petition presented a perfect opportunity for the young student to showcase his writing skills.

His motto is: “Working hard and perseverance are the mother of all success. Never lose hope even if things look impossible.” There is only one chance left to send your entry for the SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month. Kovsies through to semis

KOVSIES, the defending Varsity Netball champions, were ruthless as they handed the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) a resounding 77-16 beating in Soweto on Monday. The Bloemfontein side showed little mercy as they rampaged to a comfortable bonuspoint win against VUT who ended their first season without a win. Kovsies made a strong start to the game

and by the first break they had already built up a healthy 19-5 lead. It was more of the same in the second quarter as they went into half-time with a commanding 31-11 lead. The powerplay was taken soon afterwards and Kovsies continued their dominance. Now Kovsies are though to the semifinals of the tournament. They were joined by Tuks, NWU amd Maties. The semifinals will be played next Monday.

NINE members of the Thaba Nchu Gymnastics Club travelled to Cape Town yesterday to compete in the South African Gymnastics Games in Bellville. The gymnasts left for the Mother City yesterday at 16:00. They were expected to reach their destination at 04:00 today, just four hours before some of their members compete in the event. “Our preparations have gone well thus far. I believe my team will perform to the best of their ability. We are going to have to be at our best to win a few medals,” Kediemetse “Kay” Moloeloe, the Thaba Nchu Gymnastics Club coach, told Express. Moloeloe was concerned though that fatigue could take its toll on the gymnasts as a result of the long journey. “I think the biggest challenge for us may be physical exhaustion as a result of the long trip to Bellville. If we had funds, we could have at least left on Monday to allow the gymnasts to rest for a day before competing in the event. But we have no choice. We have to deal with the situation,” she said. “We have no sponsors and parents of these kids are paying for transport and accommodation from their own pockets. We asked for funding from the Free State Sports Federation for this trip and another one in August, but our request was declined. “Our trip and accommodation for Durban in August was paid for by the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (Math-

We are grateful for what she did for us. I thought we did well in Durban. We won seven bronze, eight silver and one gold medal. We are expecting a very tough competition in Cape Town. But we’ll definitely win something,” she added. Reakantse Phukuntsi (11), one of the gymnasts, said she was looking forward to competing in the games. “I think through hard work I’ll achieve success in Cape Town. I’m going to try hard to impress the judges when I compete. Hopefully I’ll win a gold medal,” said Phukuntsi. Meanwhile, Express called Jerry Sekgwaba, the president of the Free State Sports Federation, to find out why his federation failed to fund the Thaba Nchu Gymnastics Club for their trip to Cape Town. “I’m out of the province and in NorthWest where I’m attending a conference. Please call me later in the afternoon so that we can talk,” he said. ) By the time of going to print, Express had not spoken to him yet.

“You can’t fire a coach without giving him the players he wants to succeed. That would be a very stupid decision. The coach has given us his players’ wish list. We have brought in some of those players he wants already. I’m certain we have enough depth now. From now on, we are expecting positive results.” Max Tshabalala

Max wants to give coach a chance } Sidwell Guduka ERNST MIDDENDORP remains a Bloemfontein Celtic coach – at least for now. This was confirmed by the Phunya Sele Sele chairman, Max Tshabalala, during a hastly-convened press conference – which started 50 minutes later than the scheduled time – at Siwelele Park in Bloemfontein on Monday. The Free State side have been struggling to get good results under Middendorp. Betting on Celtic is like flogging a dead horse. They have only managed to register a single win in nine matches this season. These results will not do much to convince their supporters that the chairman’s promises at the beginning of the season will bear fruit. It could get worse for Celtic when they come up against a marouding Kaizer Chiefs side in the Sparta Macufe Cup game at the Free State Stadium on Sunday. However, Tshabalala has thrown his weight behind the under-performing coach. “We want to reiterate that our coach (Middendorp) is going nowhere. He is here to stay. We are supporting him,” Tshabalala told reporters. “We believe in our coach. He’s got enough experience to take us out of this situation. If you remember vividly, the very same coach took Celtic from 13th position to eighth position,” he said. It doesn’t need a rocket scientist to work out that Middendorp is failing at Celtic – the question is for how long will Tshabalala support him? “I will never support a failure. We support the coach because we know his vision. He has given us his plan for the whole season. I am of the opinion that it would be premature to take any negative decision in the team at this juncture,” said the chairman. “We cannot deny the fact that the club is not doing well. We are going through a rough patch. The reason (for the club’s poor

run) is we have brought in new players. It will take a while for the team to gel and you’ve got to give them a chance,” he said. Celtic have bolstered their squad with the acquisation of Jacky Motshegwa, Mukuka Mulenga, Lethola Mofokeng and Jomo Sehwai. “Let me be a bit personal. Any chairman who expects good results without bringing in great players and expect the coach to be a muti man is a fool. “We are currently negotiating with two players from big teams, but we cannot divulge their names at this stage. We want to get all the players that our coach wants,” Tshabalala explained his decision to keep Middendorp at Siwelele Park. “You can’t fire a coach without giving him the players he wants to succeed. That would be a very stupid decision. The coach has given us his players’ wish list. We have brought in some of those players he wants already. I’m certain we have enough depth now. From now on, we are expecting positive results.” In their last match, Celtic lost 3-2 to fellow strugglers Amazulu in the Telkom Knockout Cup Series. Middendorp’s men led 2-0 until the 80th minute, but they allowed Usuthu to

launch a come-from-behind victory. “To add to my frustration, we were beaten by the team that is below us on the log. We are disappointed about the loss. We were not supposed to lose in that fashion. Like any other team, we want to try and win every game we play,” said Tshabalala. Celtic have proven to be the most ill-disciplined side in the league so far after collecting four red cards in four consecutive matches. “We are not happy at the rate in which our players are picking up red cards. We are dealing with discipline problem within our team. The players are under pressure and they tend to make mistakes because good results are not forthcoming, hence we are collecting red cards. “We have also asked the coach to control his temper during matches and he has promised to be more friendly.” Tshabalala had confirmed that Celtic have parted ways with long-serving servants David Modise and George Nechironga. “We have roped in (Ditheko) Mototo as a development coach and he will be assisted by Jeffrey Lekhetla,” he concluded. ) For related stories, visit www.expressnews.co.za.
