Raped 17 times

Police unable to trace any of the suspects } Jabulani Dlamini

SELINA MOGALE*, a 41-year-old domestic worker, has been raped by at least 17 men in the last three years. The mother of one, who lives in Phase 4 outside Bloemfontein, said she was bitterly disappointed in the Bloemspruit police as not a single suspect had ever been caught. “I have not received an update on any of the four cases I have opened with the police. Instead some of the officers have started to make fun of me when I keep returning to report new cases,” she said. Mogale recounted to Express how, in one of the more horrific incidents, she and her boyfriend had been accosted by eight men last winter. “We were walking in Freedom Square when eight men appeared and threatened us. My boyfriend ran away and the men dragged me into a nearby veld and raped me for several hours,” Mogale said. The other three incidents happened at her home. “My house has been broken into about six times and on three of those occasions I was raped,” said Mogale. Mogale said because the rapes took place in the dark she could not say for sure how many men had been involved, but she remembered hearing at least three different voices each time. “On one occasion I can only assume there were three men involved because they even prepared food and drinks for themselves, I counted three glasses on the table hence I think there were three assailants,” she said, while checking with her sister to avoid mixing the facts of the incidents. Mogale’s sister, who lives nearby, said her sister was a mentally strong person to have survived these incidents.

Asked how she had managed to stay strong despite her horrific experiences, Mogale said she had to be strong because she did not have any family in Phase 4. “I cannot run away from my house, it

is my home,” she said. Lt Col Thandi Mbambo, police spokesperson, said they could only find two cases on their records when checking against Mogale’s name with one of them being recorded as a case

of house breaking. “The two cases have been closed as the police are unable to trace the suspects,” Mbambo said. , Not her real name. S See video at www.express-news.co.za.
